Ekiti counci polls: Oyebanji hails, SIEC, voters

Ekiti state governor, Biodun Oyebanji has commended the electoral commission and votes for peaceful elections.

H evoted at his Ikogosi country home in the first local government council election conducted by his administration.

The governor who voted at his Ward 6, Unit 003 Okelele Street, Ikogosi-Ekiti around 11.40am, commended the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) for a seamless and peaceful electoral process.

He also tanked Ekiti electorate for the peaceful conduct in the election which took place in all the 16 local Government Areas (LGAs) and 22 Local Development Council Areas (LCDAs)

Speaking with journalists shortly after casting his vote, the Governor expressed delight that people at the grassroots were able to choose their representatives at local government and the 177 wards without fear or threat or any form of crisis.

Governor Oyebanji described local government election as strategic and fundamental to the delivery of dividends of democracy to the grassroots.

The governor who scored the current local government administration in many of the council areas in the state high in the areas of infrastructure development, maintained that local governments are viable instruments of grassroots political participation, socialization, economic and infrastructure development.

While commending the State Independent Electoral Commission and the security agencies in the state for the peaceful conduct of the election, the Governor said government would continue to prioritize voters’ education and sensitization across the state in order to foster a more robust democratic process and participation.

“I am happy that as government we are doing this, because local government election is the most critical arm of government with respect to delivering government policies at the grassroots level and it is very important to democratise government at this level because it is the closest to the people and the beauty of democracy is to have representatives at that level being elected by the people and am happy that we have done this in Ekiti State.

“I am also happy because the people on their own have the opportunity to choose their representatives at local government level and at the ward level. So far so good, the turnout is a bit low and that tells us we need to do more on voters’ education and sensitization.” The Governor asserted.

In what is seen as a new dimension to opposition politics in Ekiti State, a former governor of the state and candidate of the Social democratic Party (SDP) in the last governorship election, Segun Oni, an engineer; yesterday morning came to the Government House Chapel to join Governor Biodun Oyebanji for the Sunday worship.

The former governor, who came with some members of his immediate family and political associates, arrived at the chapel, located inside the Government House complex, Ado-Ekiti around 9:55am. He was received by the governor.

He said he came to fulfil a promise he had made to Governor Oyebanji to come and worship with him at the Government House Chapel, having missed the opportunity to join the governor for the special thanksgiving service held on October 22, in commemoration of his first anniversary in office.

Oni recalled that his last worship at the chapel was on October 15, 2010, the day he was removed from office by the Court of Appeal.

The former governor, in his address to the congregation, which included Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye; Speaker of the Assembly, Adeoye Aribasoye; Head of Service, Sunday Komolafe, an engineer and some top government officials, called on stakeholders in the Ekiti project to join hands with Governor Oyebanji to achieve a landmark success for the collective progress of the state.

He said politics remained an avenue to serve the people, adding that election and election petitions were part of the constitutional processes of democracy.

“It is good to contest an election. It is also good to challenge the outcome in the court. And after then, you move on. We should run politics. Politics should not run us. This is the time we should all join hands together with Governor Oyebanji to develop the state.

Oni expressed delight at the transformation being experienced in the state within the last one year, saying it an attestation to Governor Oyebanji’s exemplary and visionary leadership.

“I have come here to fellowship with everybody, especially my brother, the governor and to also tell politicians, we should give our self holiday sometimes from politics and politicking,” he said.

He hailed the governor for the infrastructure projects as well as the ongoing efforts at ensuring all abandoned projects are completed, including the Ado-Ifaki road.

“I will say he has been very impressive, he is a gift to us as a people and I believe he has a perfect composure to move us forward”.

Oni advised the governor to continue to trust in God for the realisation of his shared prosperity agenda even in the face of the meagre resources available to the state.”

Governor Oyebanji thanked the former governor for his love for Ekiti State and for his commitment to the development of the state.

Oyebanji, who described Oni as a selfless leader who genuinely loved and worked for the growth of Ekiti people, said the state would forever be grateful to him for his selfless service to the people of the state.

“I thank Your Excellency for this remarkable visit, which I consider a demonstration of your love for me and for our dear state. For you to come around and worship God with us shows you love and support our development efforts.

“One think remarkable about you is that you love Ekiti people and Ekiti people love you. You are selfless and you live in the heart of the people.

“That I won the election does not mean I am better than you. It is by God’s grace. And you have been a pillar of support to us, immediately the court case ended,” Oyebanji added.

He also used the avenue to appreciate all former governors of the state for their support for his administration, not minding political party affiliations.

Assuring the former governors that his administration would continue to prioritise the welfare of the people, Governor Oyebanji urged stakeholders to come and contribute their expertise and resources for the overall development of the state, emphasising that progress knows no party lines.

The Chaplain of the Government House Chapel, Pastor Segun Awolumate, who hailed the humility and simplicity of both former Governor Oni and the incumbent Governor Oyebanji, enjoined politicians and public office holders/seekers to take a cue from the life styles of the two leaders.

Ekiti commences second phase of palliatives distribution

Governor Biodun Oyebanji on Friday, flagged off distribution of the second phase of palliatives to the people of Ekiti State, barely two weeks after it commenced transfer of N5,000 monthly to indigent citizens

The governor pointed out that his respect for the citizens was borne out of the regard for them as his boss.

Oyebanji also rallied support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the removal of the fuel subsidy, clarifying that the policy was not intended to punish the citizens, but to fortify the economy for a greater and prosperous future.

Oyebanji spoke in Ado Ekiti while flagging off the distribution of the second tranche of the palliatives to the indigenes to cushion the effects of subsidy removal on them.

Addressing the beneficiaries at the Government House ground, Oyebanji said one year has gone by in the life of his administration, promising that the remaining years will be better in terms of greater economic prosperity, infrastructural development, and improved standards of living of the populace.

“But if our government is doing something you don’t like, kindly tell us, we are not infallible. Tell the political appointees or elected people in your constituencies, they will tell us, so that we can correct ourselves. You are the one who voted for me, you are the boss and not me”.

The governor declared that the commodities comprising rice and maize, to be distributed in the second phase, were provided by the Federal and state governments to mitigate the effects of subsidy removal.

Oyebanji said: “I have told you that I will always lead you with truth. Our President,  Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu sent some palliatives to you and we bought some to be able to go round. It is a partnership between the federal and state governments.

“These palliatives are for the poorest of the poor and whoever can take three square meals daily without stress should please resist the temptation of taking from these palliatives. It is for those who can’t afford that.

“We have also begun the distribution of N5,000 stipend to some poor masses, they will receive this for three months, just to reduce the current pressure. All these are just palliatives pending the time we will take concrete measures to address the current situation”.

Oyebanji added: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu asked us to tell you that subsidy removal is to make our future better, not to punish us. It could have been better if the past administrations had removed the subsidy.

“So, I plead with you, continue to pray for President Tinubu and my government. Let me tell you that Ekiti is the first state to distribute the second batch and we will continue to reach out to you as we get these in batches from the federal government”.

The Governor added that apart from palliative distribution to the poor, those running poultry businesses will receive trucks of maize to make them thrive and contribute to economic development.

  • Oyebanji, Ekiti and purposeful leadership

    Oyebanji, Ekiti and purposeful leadership

Although the initial steps have to be taken by the individual, the picture of personality as having “power to uplift, power to depress, power to curse, and power to bless” is working for Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji of Ekiti State. It is a poser that’s given back to the owner. It makes a man become enthusiastic because, each time he sees the good he has done, he becomes motivated to do more. Essentially therefore, it is an individual’s character that defines his or her legacy.

Tellingly, Oyebanji, aka BAO, has within a year in office redefined governance. He loves development. As a matter of fact, it is infused into his character; and that’s to the advantage of his people. Some leaders are averse to development. Although they say it with the words of mouth, they don’t quite understand what development is all about; and that’s why the pattern remains the same. They leave office without any meaningful impact other than regrets; and the error is in the selection process. A little push, a little compromise; and the error is in the manifest.

Oyebanji is a golden boy in a golden era. Therefore, all he needs to do is to carefully check his options and give the people the best. From the look of things, the governor is not likely to ask for anything from President Bola Tinubu and for the president to be prevaricating, because the president knows that he (Oyebanji) is a shining star; and that’s to the advantage of the ruling party. So, what other former governors could not afford or establish, Oyebanji can now attempt it; and he will get it. If you say it is luck, yes, it doesn’t get better than that!

The only and major problem BAO may likely have – in the state or elsewhere – is with his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwarts who are with the chronic sense of entitlement, a reality which has moved with time and space. Wherever such rears its head, the governor should match out in confidence and implement his policies while allowing the party machinery to arrive at achievable political objectives. He must be conscious of time. He must run as if this is the only tenure for him.

During Bola Ige’s time as governor of the old Oyo State, he was always assuring Ijesaland that it’s the owner of his 2nd term in office, which he never got. When he came to Ijebu-Jesa during one of his official tours, Ige promised, among other things, to turn the then Obokun Local Government Secretariat at Ijebu-Jesa, which was under construction at the time, to a 120-bed hospital. We were all elated! But that opportunity never came because the affectionate ‘Uncle Bola’ never won his reelection bid. So, Oyebanji must not procrastinate. For this 1st term, let him be loaded and let him blast it because this is the day that the Lord has made, and it has been given to him. Let him run with the vision and the precision of the medieval archers. They had that legacy of not missing their targets; and they became renowned for it.

So far, Oyebanji’s interventions have ranged from human capital and youth development, to arts, culture and tourism. From Education and Rural Development, to Transport and Power Infrastructure; and from Agriculture and Food Security, to Industrialization, the governor’s means and ends have shown consistency. Salaries and pensions are being paid promptly and loan facilities are being given to eligible government workers. Free Mass Transit Scheme was introduced for public servants and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), complete with allied gadgets, were procured for the use of security agencies. On his watch, intra- and inter-city roads were either rehabilitated or constructed even as towns and villages were connected to the National Grid. In the Tourism Sector, BAO has not been wanting.

A man rich in ideas, Oyebanji is in the good books of the civil servants. He has also mastered the street politics of Ekiti. In terms of accessibility, he has demonstrated it. He engages regularly with the citizens in both structured and unstructured manners and his feedback mechanism is also very active. He attends APC meetings, visits schools and hospitals unannounced and personally supervises projects through which he has significantly reduced the cost of governance. Till date, Oyebanji has not bought official cars for his use, not to talk of changing the furniture in the Governor’s Office and/or in the Governor’s Lodge. Instead, he channeled the funds meant for those projects into other more pressing needs like infrastructure upgrade, erosion control and rehabilitation of schools and hospitals.

Read Also: Oyebanji: expect more road projects next year

Going forward, BAO must bear in mind that the disoriented and confused youths, and the ever-growing geographical territory of the unemployed are all watching. Since they are always operating without the enabled enhancement of the ‘Omoluabi’ ethos, they are not to be taken for granted. Unlike what worked for the past governors in the Western Region, that solid arrangement cannot be conjectured again. So, the governor must strive to be ingenious all the time.

Ekiti State is blessed with a fantastic natural climate, a relatively stable and safe environment and an economy that has value. It is one state where the Rule of Law reigns and where responsible, responsive and strategic leadership also thrives. It is a state where the legal tender is knowledge. But then, the naysayers and the easily-excited clowns will always be around and functional. In the days of former Olabisi Onabanjo of Ogun State, the same university that’s now performing wonders was put down. So, Oyebanji must never be afraid of the opposition because ‘Ayekoto’, as Onabanjo was fondly called, insisted on what’s good. Now, Nigerians have him to thank for Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ago Iwoye, Ogun State.

Ige was also assertive and he eventually suffered legacy comments from the public during the 2nd Republic’s ‘Universal Free Education’ programme. The opposition came after him but he stood his ground. The ‘Cicero of Esa-Oke’ is no longer with us on this side of the divide but what he did when the opportunity beckoned continues to shout aloud; and it’s unstoppable, because it’s the truth. So, Oyebanji must remember that he is there now. Let something speak for him tomorrow. Notable among them are the Ado-Ekiti – Ifaki-Ekiti Road and Ado-Ekiti – Ilawe-Ekiti Road, which once caved in. In the same ship lies the destiny of the yet-to-be-completed Ado-Ekiti – Aramoko-Ekiti – Ita-Iddo Road.

In an ideal democracy, followership and political participation must always be subject to scrutiny. One: what is the party saying? Two: those implementing, in whose interest are they doing it; and, is there accountability? These become necessary because, ‘hey’, believe you me, whatever the answers are to all the raised questions will go a long way in determining the prolonged stay of the party, not the last minute distribution of money or running around to capture votes.

In this part of the world, Local Government structure is considered as a governor’s structure. So, how Oyebanji manages the forthcoming Local Government election in the state will go a long way in defining his government. Since this is a guided democracy which must reflect the wishes of the people, how he also redirects, especially the politics of the swing Local Governments (Ekiti West, Ikere-Ekiti and Ado-Ekiti) and adjoining communities will go a long way in determining the shape and size of his second term ambition. Matter-of-factly, it is when an average person who doesn’t have a political appointment has passion for his political party of choice that the government can run smoothly and peacefully.

Lastly, Oyebanji demonstrated the ‘Omoluabi’ ethos recently when he prostrated, full chest, for Afe Babalola, and ditto for his former teacher. He needs more of these! Most importantly, BAO needs to always consult widely with proudly-Ekiti leaders like Babalola, Wole Olanipekun, Niyi Adebayo, Femi Falana and former Ekiti governors – and they cut across party preferences – to make his first tenure a success.

May the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, grant us peace in Ekiti State!
