Oyebanji: expect more road projects next year

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has promised to accelerate development in his second year in office.

He said government would undertake more road projects next year, following requests by towns and villages.

The governor also spoke about the commencement of the World Bank Assisted Rural Access to Market Project, which will focus on rural roads linking farms to markets.

He said he had overcome challenges in the last 12 months to keep some of his campaign promises, especially in infrastructure upgrade, pledging that his administration was primed to do much more in the second year.

Oyebanji, who apologised to the community for the agony the commuters plying the route must have experienced on the deplorable road, said the year of pains had gone with the beginning of the reconstruction work.

He described the gesture as keeping to the promise he made while campaigning across the state, noting that he would keep to the social contracts signed with the people to build a trust between the government and the governed.

Tracing the trajectories of government’s interventions on the road, Oyebanji said: “You know that this road has undergone three stages of rehabilitation, but all were short-lived. But this current reconstruction is going to be total.

“All the lapses witnessed in the previous rehabilitation shall be corrected to make this one last and durable.

“We are assuring you that as we begin the second year of this administration, greater things shall continue to happen to our people. We will continue to fulfil our promises to you. This is our pledge and we will keep to it.

“I want to charge the contractor handling the project to do a good job that he has been known for and it must be delivered in record time.”

Works Commissioner Sola Adebayo said the Ikole-Ara-Isinbode road was central to economic development of the area.

He said Oyebanji’s government was spending huge sum on rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads on the premise that it was a propelling force for improved industrial development and investment drives.

Adebayo urged the company handling the road project to deliver the best job and finish in record time, to meet the yearnings of the motorists.

The Onisin of Isinbode, Oba Adesoji Akinyemi, said the road  was the shortest route from Ekiti to Kwara, hailing the governor for being a promise keeper, which he demonstrated with the project and the restoration of light to Gbonyin Local Government.

Oyebanji declares free malaria treatment in Ekiti

Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State declared free malaria treatment for children under five years, pregnant women, and the elderly in the state, saying that pregnant women would also benefit from free delivery services.

He said that the free treatments would be enjoyed in all the 177 primary health care centres across the state under ‘Ulera Wa Scheme.’

The governor made this known in Ado Ekiti while commissioning the Okesa Comprehensive Health Centre as part of activities marking the first anniversary of his administration.

He stated that the welfare and well-being of the citizens remain a top priority of his government, adding that he would not leave anyone behind in the provision of quality health services, especially for children under five years of age.

He stated that his administration had more than ever before, allocated more resources to both secondary and tertiary health institutions in the state, having approved an aggressive and immediate renovation of those facilities in the state.

On welfare, the governor hinted that health workers in the state have started enjoying hazard allowance and other benefits since March 2023, just as his government has given approval for the Hospitals Management Board to fill consequential vacancies occasioned by the retirement of various cadres of the workforce to allow for effectiveness and efficiency of the sector.

He said he had promised the people of the state during his electioneering campaign that he would make healthcare accessible and affordable for everyone, especially, the vulnerable populace, adding that he would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the people live a good and healthy life.

Governor Oyebanji, who cut the tape declaring the facility open, thanked members of the Response Resources Mobilization Committee (RRMC) for the wonderful job they did during the Covid-19 pandemic and urged them to rejig their efforts towards pulling more resources to the state to enable his administration to drive effective and a desired health sector that would be an envy of other states of the federation.

He said the Primary Health Centre is the gateway to any healthcare delivery, adding that that was the reason he had joined hands with his siblings to build a maternity facility in Aramoko Ekiti General Hospital in memory of their late mother, due for commissioning later in the year.

The governor also revealed that his government has approved the hosting of the 64th National Council of Health in Ekiti with the belief that their deliberations in the state would have a positive and indelible impact on the healthcare delivery in the state.

He stated: “I am here this evening to commission this newly equipped facility which was built through the effort of the Response Resources Mobilization Committee (RRMC) in collaboration with the Ekiti State government.

“This administration has now equipped this facility to ensure it serves our people. You will agree with me that the health of Ekiti citizens takes the front burner in the programmes and policies of our administration. We are living up to our determination and promise not to leave anyone behind in matters of health service delivery.

“Our commitment to ensuring universal health coverage is daily yielding impressive results, as the state’s flagship health insurance programme known as ‘Ulera wa’ has become accessible in 177 health facilities in the state, fully covering children under age five as well as some people with disability.

“With Ulera wa, no woman should have to pay for delivery at any of our PHCs in Ekiti state. To ensure services are available at the point of use, we have in addition to this facility committed resources to our secondary health facilities as well. Our tertiary health facility, EKSUTH. It is currently being worked upon to make sure that our critical infrastructure is well maintained to provide comfort, quality and safe healthcare for our clients.

“In addition to this, the welfare of healthcare workers in the state has been prioritized, this administration has approved the payment of hazard allowance for health workers in the state public service. Health workers have enjoyed the implementation of hazard allowance since March 2023.

“Also in a bid to improve the human capital development in the health sector, government approves the recruitment of health workers for HMB to fill the consequential vacancies gap and to provide effective and efficient medical services to our citizenry.

“This administration has also approved the introduction of parity payment for health workers in the state. This is with a view to improving health workers’ motivation and to me, this is a campaign promise I made to you.”

Earlier the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Oyebanji Filani commended the Governor for the various motivation he had given health workers in the state by increasing their salaries and granting them hazard allowance.

The commissioner noted that the importance of a Comprehensive Health Centre cannot be underestimated as it is the gateway to any effective and efficient healthcare facilities as he stressed the need to provide all necessary requirements to deliver good quality services for the people at this level.

A statement by its Chairman, Prof. Muyiwa Igbalajobi, and Secretary, Babatunde Odetola, praised the administration for regular payment of salary, noting: “During this one year,  salaries, allowances and gratuities are paid before the end of every month. This has improved workers’ attitude to governance and positive relationship between the workers and the government.”

This has reduced unemployment. The appointment is aimed at improving educational standard in Ekiti State.

This is aimed at reducing financial problems of the people as a result of removal of oil subsidy.”

“The Forum is impressed by the positive administrative style of Governor Oyebanji within one year in Ekiti State. This has assisted APC to enjoy massive support from groups such as Okada riders, motor drivers and women groups, who have shown interest and made the government of Ekiti State very popular.

  • Governor Oyebanji’s one year in office

Governor Oyebanji’s one year in office

Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji of Ekiti State is privileged to have inherited a stable platform. Were it to have been otherwise, one doubts if he would by now have finished negotiating the trouble zones, not to talk about development in the state. Not just that, the governor also has a thriving centre to his advantage. So, whichever way it goes, it’s a good step, which brings to the fore the need for him to engage the best of brains – which, of course, Ekiti State has not been short of – and apply same towards development.

Without doubt, the quietness or stillness that’s being experienced in ‘The Fountain of Knowledge’ in the past one year of the Oyebanji-led administration has been a blessing in disguise, for it has given him the ample chance to plan and execute his strategic vision for development, more so as Ekitis are actually expecting a lot from him.

Discreet inquiries have revealed that the governor has done so much within so short a time. This man with a good heart has not only felt where the shoes pinched the people’s feet but also responded to them positively, a situation that has set him apart as a leader made ready for his people’s needs. Immediately he assumed office, BAO, as Oyebanji is fondly called, hit the ground running, which showed that he’s not just there to experiment but one who has a sophisticated understanding of the world around him.

Well, while I intend to interrogate some of the exploits of this unassuming achiever in the coming days, for the governor, this mustn’t be the end. Thankfully, BAO still has time on his side. This good addition to Nigeria’s rich history still has a long way to go towards creating a new reality for Ekiti State in particular and Nigeria in general. So, he must fight through all the chances in this world with a view to giving the people the dividends of democracy. This is no era for excuses at all!

As Governor Oyebanji clocks one year in office on October 16, 2023, Nigerians can only pray for him to do more!

May the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, grant us peace in Nigeria!
