Oyebanji gets kudos for reconnecting town to national grid

Following reconnection of his town to national grid after a decade of power outage, a traditional ruler in Ekiti State, Oba Adebanji Aladesuyi, has lauded Governor Biodun Oyebanji.

In the same vein, Gbonyin Local  Government Chair,  Oluwadamilare  Ajayi, has hailed the state for reconnecting its towns and cities and Aiyekire to the national grid after years of darkness.

Ajayi described the governor’s gesture as salutary, noting Oyebamiji is a people’s governor and a promise keeper.

The ruler said restoring eleçtricity to the community and other towns will reinforce economic activities as well as shore up security.

Oyebanji, on Wednesday, restored electricity to Ijan Ekiti and Gbonyin council that had been in darkness since 2010.

Aladesuyi said promises were made by preceding governments to restore electricity after Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) disconnected the area, saying the situation has buoyed and rekindled people’s hope in the government.

The monarch, who ascended the throne a year ago, bemoaned how the outage had negatively impacted on business in Gbonyin.

Aladesuyi stressed the reconnection wiould increase people’s economic consciousness and bring an upswing in business.

“Let me, on behalf of my community and Gbonyin Local Government, appreciate Governor Biodun Oyebanji, for this achievement. It was a restoration of hope after years of despondency.

“For over a decade, my subjects were immersed in darkness. Businesses were comatose. All promises and hopes became shattered and futile, but the advent of Oyebanji’s government rekindled our hope through his visionary and quintessential leadership.

“During his electioneering prior to the June 18, 2022 governorship election, the Governor did promise that he would reconnect Gbonyin, Ijan Ekiti inclusive back to the national grid within one year in the saddle. Most astoundingly, he kept the promise and delivered.

“This accentuated the fact that good leadership still abounds in Nigeria. My people will forever be grateful for this immeasurable show of love and good leadership exhibited by his Excellency, Governor Oyebanji”, the monarch stated. The traditional ruler emphasized that the electricity supply in the area will help the government, the towns and security agencies to synergize and rout the abrupt spike in criminal activities in the facets of kidnappings and killings that were rearing their ugly heads in the council. He lamented that gun-wielding bandits and those with other criminal instincts hid under the cover of darkness to unleash terror and killings on the people of the area as the power outage lasted.

“Governor Oyebanji’s action has energised our hopes that the days of kidnapping and killing spree have gone. Those hiding under the cover of darkness to terrorise our people will no longer have a field day as they used to”.

Meanwhile , the LCDA Chairman noted that with this new development, he was convinced that the entire people in both Gbonyin local governments and Aiyekire will give Governor Oyebamiji a rousing support and continued loyalty.

Ajayi lauded the electricity authority on the plan to ensure all houses in the local government are metered to avoid the atrocious practice of accummulated billings which can again throw the community into crisis of huge indebtedness. He stated that metering all the houses based on pay as you use will allow control and moderation as well as regulation in consumption.

  • How Oyebanji is tackling challenges of governance

How Oyebanji is tackling challenges of governance

Three hundred days after he assumed office, Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has given the account of his stewardship to the people. Our Correspondent RASAQ IBRAHIM examines his administration’s activities and the tasks ahead.

n Ekiti State, a new air is blowing. The people are feeling the positive impacts of good governance under  Governor Biodun Oyebanji. His giant imprints are perceptible in Ado-Ekiti, Ijero-Ekiti, Ikere-Ekiti, Ikole, Oye-Ekiti, Ido, Aramoko and among other towns.

The governor, fondly called ‘BAO’ by his admirers, is really walking the talk on the promises he made to the people during the electioneering period. Since October 16,  2022 when he took over the baton of power, Oyebanji has been consistent in implementing life changing programmes and policies. So, the citizens are ecstatic that they made the right choice at the ballot.

Oyebanji, through his actions and deeds, has been providing the leadership and courage required to reposition the state on the surest path of greatness through strategic interventions and meaningful executions of progressive action plans.

He came forth with a deep knowledge of Ekiti having served in different positions under former governors Adeniyi Adebayo and Kayode Fayemi. So, he understand the nuances of governance like the wavy lines on his palm.

Oyebanji is blessed with both knowledge and intelligence. This is a governor who rises above the banality of politics and poised to disrupt the existing status quo in a way that is not merely incremental, but transformative for the greater benefit of Ekiti people.

The Oyebanji-led government has been consistently matching words with actions and working tirelessly with the intention to transform into reality the shared prosperity agenda of making Ekiti epicentre of development and model for good governance.

From his rapid response to victims of disasters to putting smiles on the faces of the retirees, giving lifelines to the less privilege and hope for the hopelessness, providing shelters for the homeless and succours to the widows, Oyebanji has come to symbolises leadership that has a caring heart.

Oyebanji is not only popular among the ‘commoners’ through his populist style of leadership but also genuinely shown affection by other segments  including the traditional rulers, civil servants and the elites as well as members of the opposition parties.

His passion to turn around Ekiti state is untiring. The last three hundred days in office he had spent in office have been busy, painstaking and momentous. He embraced governance with intelligence, passion, candour, demonstrated humility, and shunned idleness.

The governor ‘hardly sleeps’ with a view to making life abundant for the people and ensuring that Ekiti is well positioned on the grid of excellence. Oyebanji who arrives office at about 8:15 am each day sometimes stays there till 2’o clock the following morning. He is always locked in  strategic meetings with the Heads of Ministeries, Department and Agencies to brainstorm on how to make Ekiti greater.

He also holds meetings with traditional rulers, ethnic-based associations, faith-based organizations, non-governmental organizations, political parties, interest groups, development partners among others in his belief that governance is a collective responsibility.

It’s unarguable that Oyebanji’s approach to governance has been yielding positive results with new grounds being breaken in the quest towards making Ekiti state a leading light among comity of states in the federation and even beyond Nigeria’s borders. He has continued to give the Land of Honor focused and qualitative governance that has been responsive, open and accountable to the people.

When he took over mantle of leadership, the governor immediately reeled off his area of concentrations, promising in his maiden address, to implement a 6-pillars developmental agenda to fast track rapid social and economic development of the state.

His administration’s action plan was one of the best in the country. It contains well -specified vision and mission statements subdivided under various headlines that cover practically every aspect of lives of the citizenry. The agenda cover aspects of governance, youth development and job creation, human capital debelopment, infrastructures and industrialisation, Art, Culture and Tourism, and agriculture and rural development.

Expectedly, Oyebanji has been pursuing his agenda religiously to the admiration of the people. He did not leave any of his agenda on promissory note but walking the talk as utmost priority were accorded to all spheres of governance. To this end, public institutions have been animated to measure up to the expectations of the citizenry.

Under Oyebanji’s watch, Ekiti is wearing a new look. From standard asphalt roads, viable agricultural initiatives, youths and women empowerment, sustainable and accessible healthcare  development to improved security  and education sector, the general consensus is that Ekiti State is in a safe hand.

Other sectors of the  economy have in one way or the other witnessed holistic overhaul to improve the living standard of the citizens. Ekiti state has become beehive of economic activities and the hitherto youth restiveness has also become thing of the past as youths and women have been engaged in self-reliance adventures.

He has also returned relevance to local government administrations in the state. He made the promise to allow the local government to enjoy independence and that has been happening. So, that is why local government chairmen are flagging off and commissioning people-oriented projects, a departure from the old older.

The administration has also put in place diverse supportive initiatives to empower operatives of the informal sector through easy access to financial services as well as required tools and provision of other technical backings. Additionally, postive atmosphere was created for industrial development and policies  were put in place to stimulate the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

For the people of the state, Oyebanji is a model of purposeful leadership not only the state but the country as a whole. He has restored the people’s confidence in government through his all-inclusive and participatory approach which has made citizens to be part of the developmental processes.

The administration directly involved the traditional institution in the management of the state. This much was confirmed recently by Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe  who expressed satisfaction with Oyebanji’s approach to governance and particularly how the governor places a premium on the will of the people over any other considerations.

He has not failed in updating the people on how the affairs of the state are being managed. Since inception of the present administration, three Town Hall Meetings have been held in the three  senatorial district of the State on a rotational basis to update the citizens on the activities of government and to also get feedback on the areas of focus.

The situation was not different at the last stakeholders’ engagement held in Omuo Ekiti, the headquarters of Ekiti East Local Government to commemorate his 300 days in office.

At the venue of the event, MiMS Kultural Event Centre, Iludofin were the traditional rulers, aged, artisans, market women and men, politicians from the ruling APC, the opposition People Democratic Party and Social Democratic Party (SDP), transport workers, students and members of the various professional bodies.

Many of them were there to listen to the number one citizen on how he has fared in 300 days of his administration.Though the programme was slated for 10:00 am, but by 9:00 am people had filled the hall to capacity eagerly waiting to receive the governor.

The jubilant mamoth crowds who rented the air with various songs intermittently,  expressed satisfaction on the governor’s achievements and commended him for making it possible for them to enjoy the superlative services as well as dividends inherent in democratic governance.

At the meeting, which is the third in the series, the governor rendered account of his stewardship in the last three hundred days and offered Ekiti people a peep into the future of the administration with the pledge to sustain tempo of development in the state.

Rendering accounts of his stewardship, the governor recalled that arising from his action plan he hit the ground running from the onset and was thankful today of the achievement his administration has achieved so far.

Oyebanji said he was not deterred by the herculean task before him,  adding that he confronted the challenges headlong, with the financial and moral support he received from the people.

He revealed that his administration has spent a humongous sum of N96 million on 600 individuals under the Ekiti State Livelihood Grant and N117m benefited from the Ekiti State Cash Transfer Unit to salvage the poorest of the poor from excruciating  poverty.

He added that a cummulative sum of N800 million to tertiary institutions as subvention arrears, while he paid N400 million to defray outstanding obligations to State Universal Basic Education Board contractors.

Oyebanji stated that his government is currently building two model schools in Ikole and Ikere Ekiti to complement the four magnificent structures earlier constructed  in Ado Ekiti by the administration of Dr Kayode Fayemi.

He said, “Aside the 2,600 that benefited from our cash transfer grants, we have registered 1,326 beneficiaries into Labour Intensive Public Works, with  N12,500 monthly stipend. We also distributed N24m to victims of disasters in Oke Ako and Ijesa Isu Ekiti.

“We have distributed N50m worth of relief materials to beneficiaries through the Federal Government Special National Economic Livelihood Emergency Intervention Programme. These are intended to make lives easy for our people”.

In a bid to expand the scope of food production for Ekiti to ascend food security status, the governor revealed that his government has rehabilitated  43.4 kilometre  of roads in six local governments besides distributing subsidised farm inputs to 2,279 to farmers.

“My government has supported 1,566 farmers with both production assets and small scale processing equipment likewise providing 25% subsidy tractorisation to farmers”.

In the area of infrastructures which is the backbones and pivots of any economy, Oyebanji said his government has began construction and rehabilitation of roads across the state including the the Ilawe-Ikere Road, Ado township Roads,  Ikole township Roads, Ado-Ilawe Road, Ilawe-Igede Ekiti Road, Ayegunle-Ijurin-Iloro Ekiti Road, Ado-Iworoko-Ifaki Road, Ifaki- Ido road, Imesi-Kosomolate-Ipole Road.

He posited that the 3.5MW Independent Power Plant project is 90% completion to supply light to government offices and tertiary institutions in Ado Ekiti and suburb, saying this would help rectify the erratic power supply being experienced in some part of the state .

“We are reconnecting  Ikogosi , Erijiyan and Ikogosi Resort Centre back to the national grid to enhance the state tourism corridor. We need a sum of one billion naira to reconnect Ayekire , Ekiti East Local governments and their LCDAs after 10 years of darkness as well as Agriculture Processing Zone at Ikole back to the national grid.

“We have installed solar lights at Atikankan area of Ado Ekiti to lit up the area and checkmate criminals who were using the spot as criminal hideout. This government has extended the 33KV at Omisanjana Transmission Substation to Baptist High School and connection of Ilawe 33KV line with Erinjiyan-Ikogosi”.

In the health sector, the governor said the Primary Health care has received unprecedented attention while Tertiary Health facilities have been upgraded to meet the medical needs of the people.

In the area of security, Oyebanji rued the reported cases of kidnappings around Imesi-Ode-Omuo axis, saying Amotekun had been restructured and strengthened to rise to the occasion of ensuring peace and security across all the towns in Ekiti.

Commenting on Oyebanji’s scorecard, a community leader, Elder Thomas Ibidapo said his administration has  exhibited a highly commendable performance in the last 300 days.

He said Ekiti State never had it this good since its creation in 1996, noting that the

numerous policies and programmes of the present government have enhanced the livelihood of residents.

“We have seen governor before but we have not seen any like her. He brings the dividends of democracy to the doorstep of the masses. We are very proud of him and his performances”

“Going by oyebanji’s performance in its first 300 days in office, it’s my belief that the future is, indeed, bright for the state. The trackable and verifiable statistics of his performance left no doubts about his firm grasp of Ekiti”, he added.

  • Fayemi lauds Oyebanji’s performance

    Fayemi lauds Oyebanji’s performance

The immediate past governor of Ekiti state, Kayode Fayemi, has applauded the sterling performance of Governor Biodun Oyebanji.

Fayemi said that he is happy the people of the state had already given him a pass mark barely a year into his tenure, saying he didn’t have to wait till mid-term to do an assessment of Oyebanji’s performance.

The governor gave the commendation on Friday in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital commission the ultra-modern Ado-Ekiti Bus Terminal.

He said: “The evidence of your excellent performance is all over the place for everybody to see. I don’t have to wait till mid-term to do an assessment of your performance. The people have already given you a pass mark and I am happy you didn’t disappoint the people.

“The successful completion of this ultra-modern bus terminal that is being commissioned today is one of such. I have also seen several other projects and programmes you are undertaking to the benefit of the people. This is the beauty of continuity we talked about, and I am so happy to be around to witness this.

Speaking further, Dr Fayemi who said the decision to choose Oyebanji as his successor was not taken out of sentiment, added that he had every reason to support the Oyebanji administration to achieve its set goals because the “(Oyebanji) governorship project was consciously determined, carefully researched and prayerfully endorsed.”

Commissioning the bus terminal, Governor Oyebanji said the project is a testimony to his administration’s commitment to the actualization of the socio-economic development of the state capital, especially the expansion of the city transportation infrastructure in response to its rapid urbanization.

Oyebanji said commissioning the project which was initiated by Fayemi is a justification of the continuity and shared prosperity agenda of his administration, having earlier commissioned the Traditional Council Chamber also initiated by the former governor.

He explained that the bus terminal would serve as an economic hub for inter-state transportation, with facilities such as a good internal road, a well-arranged parking lot, a driver’s lounge, a clinic, a restaurant, a ticketing bay and a banking hall, among others.

While charging the road transport workers to make judicious use of the facility and embrace a very good maintenance culture, the Governor said the project is equipped to solve trackable management problems, improve transportation infrastructure, enhance passenger experience in the state capital and reduce indiscriminate parking of vehicles along the major roads within the state capital.

“Today’s event is another testimony of our commitment to the actualization of the socio-economic development of our state especially the expansion of city transportation infrastructure to the rapid urbanization of the state capital.

Governor Oyebanji who hailed the visionary leadership of former Governor Fayemi, said the former Governor had continued to champion the interest of the state even out of office.

Stressing that he had an unalloyed loyalty to Dr Fayemi, Oyebanji said his administration is an offshoot of the immediate past administration, hence no need for comparison. Oyebanji, however, said he would like to surpass the record of achievements of the Fayemi administration in order to vindicate the former Governor that he made the right choice by backing him to succeed him in office.

The governor said: “The commissioning is another justification for the continuity of vision to which we campaigned, for example, you will recall that the foundation of this project was laid on October 27, 2021, by my boss and leader, Kayode Fayemi. We thank God that we are here today with him physically present as a guest of honour to commission this project a few weeks after commissioning the traditional council chambers another flagship project of the JKF 2.0 administration completed by our own administration.

“The project being commissioned here today will serve as a hub for inter-state transportation with such facilities as a good internal road, an organizer packing lot, a driver’s lounge, a clinic, banking hall, among others.

“I thank my leader and my boss, the former Governor Kayode Fayemi for laying a very solid foundation on which we are building upon. I keep telling people that I’ am an offshoot of your administration, this is one government and there is no reason for comparisons and the only thing I can do to make you happy, to convince the “Doubting Thomas” that you have chosen wisely is to surpass your achievement and with God on our side and with your support, I will make you proud.

“Those of you talking on WhatsApp, please leave Fayemi and me alone because he is a father to me. Don’t waste your time because you cannot separate us. If you know me well, I don’t have a history of treachery. We plead with you to allow us to develop this state in the interest of all of you.

Oyebanji, in a statement by his special adviser on media, Yinka Oyebode, described the judgement as “solid and detailed” and “a judicial sustenance of the mandate given to the clear winner of the presidential poll.”

The governor also hailed the judiciary for upholding the truth, stressing that the judicial affirmation of President Tinubu’s election has confirmed the choice of the majority of Nigerians who elected the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential flag bearer as President of the country.

He said the Tribunal verdict has laid every doubt on the validity and authenticity of the presidential result declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to rest and served as proof that democracy and the rule of law are becoming firmly rooted in Nigeria.

He noted that the latest judicial seal on Tinubu’s legitimacy would make Nigeria command more respect in the comity of nations as a beacon of hope for democracy in Africa and a model to other countries of the world.

The Ekiti state chapter of the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) described the judgement as a well-deserved victory, saying the verdict further validated the fact that he emerged through popular votes.

A statement by ARG publicity secretary, Michael Ogungbemi, appealed to all Nigerians to coalesce efforts with Tinubu to take Nigeria to the Promised Land.

The ARG called on the petitioners to rally around the current government in the task of evolving a nation that is progressive and prosperous, rather than toeing the path of division or stoking the ember of disunity.

It said: “This ruling is not only a victory for Mr President and the party but also for the entire nation as it strengthens our trust in the judiciary and serves as a catalyst for a thriving democracy.

“We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who played a role in ensuring a fair and impartial appeal process. Mr. President’s commitment to upholding the values of justice and democracy is inspiring and sets a remarkable precedent for future electoral cases.”

Oyebanji laments as flood wreaks havoc in Ekiti, submerges buildings

Many residential buildings in the Ureje Area of Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital, were on Tuesday, September 5, submerged following a heavy downpour that lasted five hours.

The areas ravaged by the downpour include the Ureje Bridge along Polytechnic Road, Eminrin Estate, Ilupeju Avenue, Elemi, Ita Eku, and Basiri, among others.

It was learnt that what began as a light shower around 3:30 pm turned into a heavy downpour and made Ureje River overflow its banks and submerged the bridge linking the state capital to Ikare in Ondo state.

Commuters entering Ado Ekiti and those travelling out of the metropolis to another town or state were trapped for several hours, waiting for the floodwater level to subside before crossing.

This caused a serious gridlock that extended from the Ureje Bridge to Saint Paul’s Anglican Church at Odo Ado, Ado Ekiti, and a distance of about two and a half kilometres.

The governor, who regretted the level of havoc wreaked by the flood, assured that the government would map out life-saving mechanisms to mitigate the destruction of property in areas submerged by water.

Oyebanji, represented by his deputy, Monisade Afuye, accompanied by other top government functionaries, gave the assurance while visiting the affected areas to assess the level of destruction caused by the incident.

He denied the rumour that five people were drowned by the flooding, saying “Our people should discountenance that rumour that five people died.

He added: “Nothing of such happened. We have it on good authority that those who fell victim were saved by divers. So, our people shouldn’t panic.

“It was to avoid flooding that this government embarked on aggressive dredging of Ureje and Elemi Rivers early this year. We also channelised many drainages in Ado Ekiti. If not for those proactive actions, the wreckage could have been worse and more destructive.

“We sympathise with those that were affected by this flooding. My government won’t abandon them. We will take quick steps to address all your issues. We will surely come to your aid because the welfare of the people is paramount to Governor Biodun Oyebanji.”

Oyebanji, however, warned Ekiti residents against unwholesome practices like reckless dumping of refuse and sewages inside canals and erection of buildings on waterways, describing these as actions that were exacerbating flooding in the state.
