Wike warns PDP against dangerous political miscalculations in 2027

…says Fubara’s peace moves yet to meet desired conditions

Ahead of the 2027 general election, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory Minister (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is yet to learn from the miscalculations that made it lose out in the last election.

He cited the tussle over the party’s national secretaryship as one of such glaring mistakes pointing out that any wise political observer knows that allowing Senator Sam Anyanwu to remain as secretary until the party holds a valid national convention is the best joker.

As part of the self-revival strategy, the PDP on Monday added 39 fresh members to its Board of Trustees (BoT).

Over 50 percent of members of the board have become inactive as 85 out of 127 PDP BoT members hardly attend meetings.

Chairman of the board, Adulphus Wabara, stressed the importance of the inauguration of the new member as he stated that it is, “particularly significant as we prepare to navigate the evolving political landscape and work tirelessly to restore the PDP as the foremost party in Nigeria. The task ahead is demanding, but with unity, determination, and unwavering commitment to the principles of democracy, we shall overcome”.

The inauguration of more members aimed at reenergizing the board amid rising internal challenges.

Section 31(5) of the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended) mandates the BoT to work as the conscience of the party, responsible for maintaining high standards of morality and image, advising on policy direction, mediating disputes, and safeguarding party assets.

On Sunday, PDP’s Governors Forum set up a special committee led by former President of the Senate, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, to do a final reconciliation work to facilitate a hitch-free meeting of its National Executive Committee (NEC) on May, 27, 2025

The FCT Minister, who spoke during a live media chat monitored by our correspondent observed that holding a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) without a valid secretary could jeopardize its political existence because the Supreme Court had already set aside the appeal court judgement that sacked Anyanwu

“I will challenge the outcome of any meeting of NEC held without Anyanwu serving as secretary” he said.

According to Wike, the PDP must be careful not to run into similar traps it entered before the 2023 election when it produced the National chairman and presidential candidate from the same region.

Warning PDP leaders about the consequences of what he called “exclusionary politics and internal manipulation”, Wike said, “If PDP doesn’t take care, watch out for what will happen because selfish interest can kill an organization. You haven’t won an election, but you are excluding people.”

According to him, the same miscalculations that cost the PDP dearly in 2023 are being repeated.

“You want to play the same game you played in 2023; it will backfire. I have told people that this smartness will not help you. Wike is telling you now to stop this smartness.

He refused to make disclosures on decisions reached at the PDP Governors and stakeholders meeting on Sunday night simply said he wished PDP well.

The FCT Minister accused the PDP leadership of tolerating impunity and failing to function like a serious opposition party ready to challenge the ruling APC.

He said, “No opposition party allows impunity; it’s only the ruling party. The opposition is going to organize itself to take over the affairs of government. How many times have they made efforts? How many people have you wooed? Rather, they are after Wike; they abandoned what they are supposed to do – the only crime is that Wike is a minister under the APC government”.

Listing his own achievements, Wike said, “I’m the only former governor who did not support the presidential candidate but made sure PDP won 100 percent in the governorship, State Assembly, and National Assembly. Let any sitting governor or former governor come out to say that happened in their states.”

He expressed deep concern over what he described as the party’s self-inflicted wounds and leadership failure.

“Leadership is key, if you don’t show the right leadership, you will suffer for it, and this is what I have been saying,” Wike stated, lamenting what he perceives as a vacuum of strategic direction in the party.

He criticized the backlash faced by the current governor of Delta State and his predecessor over their political choices, particularly the decision to support President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress.

Wike said, “When people talk about the governor of Delta State and his predecessor moving out of PDP to APC, what wrong did he do? That he said he was going to support Tinubu, that was the crime.”

He further questioned the silence over similar political alignments within the PDP itself.

“But the Chairman of the BoT, who is the conscience of the party, adopted Otti for a second tenure. Why are people not commenting about that?

The Chairman of PDP BoT adopted Alex Otti, governor under Labour Party, for a second tenure.”

He accused the PDP leadership of tolerating impunity and failing to function like a serious opposition party ready to challenge the ruling APC.

Wike said, “No opposition party allows impunity; it’s only the ruling party. The opposition is going to organize itself to take over the affairs of government.

How many times have they made efforts? How many people have you wooed? Rather, they are after Wike; they abandoned what they are supposed to do – the only crime is that Wike is a minister under the APC government.”

Highlighting his own contributions, Wike reminded the party of his political strength during the 2023 general elections.

He said, “I’m the only former governor who did not support the presidential candidate but made sure PDP won 100 percent in the governorship, State Assembly, and National Assembly. Let any sitting governor or former governor come out to say that happened in their states.”

He issued a stern warning to PDP leaders about the consequences of exclusionary politics and internal manipulation.

The minister said, “If PDP doesn’t take care, watch out for what will happen because selfish interest can kill an organization. You haven’t won an election, but you are excluding people.”

The FCT Minister also provided insight into the peace parley he had with the suspended Governor of the state, Siminalayi Fubara, saying the latter had come to visit him, accompanied by two governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He declared that Fubara did not show capacity to make peace, adding that; “I told him I don’t think you really have the capacity to make this peace”.

According to the minister, Fubara cannot be suing for peace while his lieutenants are busy all over television stations abusing others.

He said the suspended governor, apart from meeting him, must take steps to meet other stakeholders like the State Assembly, the Party, and other stakeholders for peace to reign.

Wike also described the defection of Ifeanyi Okowa, former Governor of Delta State, to the APC as a smart move.

Wike, who described Okowa as a smart politician, said he was surprised that the PDP didn’t see his defection coming.

The minister said Okowa did not want to live in pretence, supporting President Bola Tinubu while still in the PDP.

He said, “If you don’t show leadership, you suffer for it.

“This is what I’ve been saying. When people talk about the governor of Delta State and his deputy and all his team moved out of PDP to APC. What? What wrong did he do?

“I’m surprised that PDP said they didn’t see it coming. I won’t call the names of the governors. I call them. I said, ‘Listen, the way things are going, I have warned you people’. You said they are governors. I have no problem. Let’s see what will happen.”

Ekiti PDP violent-free congress signs of victory in 2026 – Fayose

A governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otunba Emmanuel Fayose, has hailed the recently conducted local government Congress across the 16 council areas of Ekiti state.

Fayose, who described the exercise as a massive success and signs of victory for the party in the 2026 governorship poll, affirmed that the outcome of the congress was a confirmation that PDP is ready to reclaim the state.

The PDP chieftain in a statement in Ado-Ekiti on Monday lauded party faithful and delegates for their peaceful conduct and impressive turnout, despite alleged attempts by some opposition elements to derail the PDP congress through court orders.

Fayose stated that the party members and leaders have through this peaceful conduct reiterated their determination to send the government of the APC packing in the state.

The PDP chieftain added that the alleged attempt to derail the congress through legal distractions was a failed plot by desperate political actors who fear his growing popularity and the momentum behind his candidacy.

“The overwhelming turnout and smooth coordination of the congress across Ekiti state have sent a powerful message, not just to naysayers within, but to the APC-led government.

“The outcome of the hitch-free congress was a confirmation that the party leaders in Ekiti are now united and committed to rescuing the people from the vestiges of the ruling APC.

“My rising grassroots support and the successful congress have sparked panic in the ruling APC camp, with fears mounting that he is poised to clinch the PDP ticket and become a formidable opponent in 2026.

“The people of Ekiti are ready, the party is united, and the time for real leadership is near”, he added.

PDP already dead, we‘ll receive you soon, Ganduje replies Lamido

The National Chairman of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has denied reports suggesting he is planning to defect to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He reaffirmed his steadfast loyalty to the ruling party.

Ganduje was responding to a recent comment attributed to a former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido, who claimed that the APC would soon disintegrate and those who left the PDP, including Ganduje, would return.

A statement by the Chief. Press Secretary to the APC Chairman,  Edwin Olofu in Abuja on Monday quoted Ganduje to have said that rather than him going to the PDP, “the APC will soon receive Sule Lamido into its fold.”

Ganduje described the claim of defection as baseless and illogical, emphasising that there was no reason for him to leave the ruling party for what he described as a “failing opposition.”

The APC Chairman predicted that the opppsition will go into extinction by the end of 2025, based on the internal squabbles in the party.

“It is evident to any discerning observer that under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC continues to gain momentum, with prominent political figures across the country defecting to the party in large numbers,” the statement said.

“With such overwhelming national support, the APC remains focused on consolidating its achievements and preparing for a resounding victory in the 2027 general elections.”

“In fact, we will soon receive Sule Lamido because very soon he won’t have where to go, the PDP is dead.”

Ganduje reaffirmed pride in leading the APC and reiterated dedication to deepening internal party democracy and promoting sustainable governance and development.

He advised Lamido to focus on resolving the PDP’s internal crises instead of engaging in unfounded speculation.

  • Defections making PDP stronger – Govs

Defections making PDP stronger – Govs

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not disturbed by the recent gale of defections that swept away some of its notable members into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

It said that rather than diminishing and weakening the party, the development has forced it to come together stronger.

The opposition party suffered massive defections in Delta State when the entire party structure, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the party’s former Vice presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa left for the APC.

Federal and State lawmakers elected under the party platform from Edo, Kastina and Kebbi states also jumped ship over the lingering internal conflicts rocking the party after the last general elections.

But the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum Bala Mohammed (Bauchi) after the crucial stakeholders meeting on Sunday night convened at the instance of the forum in Abuja said the party was forging ahead to consolidate its position in the states under its control in future elections.

The trouble-shooting and soul-searching meeting, a deft move by the leaders of the party to salvage it from further disintegration, also set up a seven-man Senator Bukola Saraki Reconciliation Committee for a rancour-free National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on May 27.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting that lasted over three hours, Mohammed noted that defection is a normal manifestation in a democratic set-up.

According to him: “This is some of the manifestations in a democratic set-up like this that we have, and this is what is forcing us to come together. Rather than diminishing and weakening, it is making us stronger, and we will make sure at least those chapters where we have history, where we have structure, are not left alone.

“They will be able to produce next Governors of the PDP by the grace of God because we will be providing the level playing field in the next convention that is coming up.”

On the meeting, Mohammed said: “We discussed some of the issues relating to our party, some existential issues, of course, that have been around in the media, within us, so that we will be able to navigate smoothly for the NEC that is scheduled to take place on the 27th of this month, and by August we will have an early convention.

“So many issues and reports have been made, and it is an opportunity to close ranks, and to make sure that at least there is no ill feelings, there are no qualms, there are no misgivings between the leaders of the party.”

He further said that the meeting was to reassure the party’s teaming supporters that the “PDP is working, the PDP is united.”

Admitting some missing gaps in the party, the Bauchi Governor said: “We set up a committee of seven, headed by His Excellency, the former Senate President, and of course former Governor of Kwara State, to make sure that at least quick reconciliation and reach out will be made, in such a manner that we will have a very rancour free and harmonious NEC and convention.”

Other members of the committee include Governors Dauda Lawal (Zamfara); Caleb Muftwang (Plateau) and Peter Mba (Enugu); Senators Seriake Dickson, Ibrahim Dankwambo and former  Abia Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

The Governors at the meeting included: Bala Mohammed (Bauchi); Peter Mbah (Enugu); Dauda Lawal (Zamfara); Ademola Adeleke (Osun); Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau);  Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and  Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa).

The Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum led two other members of the party’s NWC, National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade SAN and National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature at the meeting.

Saraki heads  7-member PDP reconciliation committee

The Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum (PDP-GF) and former governors have named former Senate President Bukola Saraki as the head of a seven-member reconciliation committee.

The PDP-GF Chairman, Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, announced this while briefing newsmen after the forum’s crucial meeting with former governors, on Sunday night in Abuja.

Mohammed said that the seven-member committee was mandated to reconcile aggrieved members ahead of the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting schedule for May 27 and the forthcoming national convention in August.

“We are here with all the governors elected under the party, that are still in the party and a substantial number of former PDP governors, with our leaders, the chairman of the party, and some members of the National Working Committee (NWC).

“We discussed some of the issues relating to our party, some existential issues, of cours,e that have been circulating in the media and among us, so that we will be able to navigate smoothly for the NEC scheduled to take place on May 27 and by August, we will have an early convention.

“So many issues and reports have been made, and it is an opportunity to close ranks, and to make sure that at least there is no ill feelings, there are no qualms, there are no misgivings between the leaders of the party.

“Governors of the party have reached out to our colleagues who have been there before, who have more experience.

”Whatever suggestions or opinions they may have, will go a long way in giving an added impetus to the actualisation of our NEC, and our convention that is scheduled to take place on specific days.

“We want to reassure our teaming supporters that the PDP is working, the PDP is united,” Mohammed said.

Answering questions on the recent defection of Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta and others to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Mohammed said the party was working not only to strengthen it structures, but also reclaim its states.

“Well, this is some of the manifestations in a democratic set-up like this that we have, and this is what is forcing us to come together.

“Rather than diminishing and weakening, it is making us stronger, and we will make sure at least those chapters where we have history, where we have structure, are not left alone.

“They will be able to produce governors of the PDP by the grace of God, because we will be providing the level playing field in the next convention that is coming up” he said.

On what specific issues were discussed at the meeting, Mohammed said:”I cannot tell you all the issues that we discussed.

”We discussed unity. Definitely there are some ill feelings, and we are not here to hide things under the carpet. You know some of them.

“Some of the litigations in court, some of the misgivings between party members, and of course, we wouldn’t want to blame the APC for causing crisis, but they are likely to be the ones. We are not saying they are,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that other members of the committee are governors Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, Caleb Muftwang of Plateau, and Peter Mba of Enugu State.

Other members are Sen. Seriake Dickson, Sen. Ibrahim Dankwambo, and former governor of Abia State, Chief Okezie Ikpeazu.

In a move to reposition the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of 2027 general elections, the party will be swearing in new members of its Board of Trustees (BoT).

This was contained in a notice on Sunday night in Abuja by the party’s Director of Publicity,  Pastor Chinwe Nnorom.

    • Fears, uncertainty shroud proposed May 27 NEC meeting

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are scheduled to meet in Abuja today amidst the gale of defections that has hit the party.

The governors’ rank decreased by one two weeks ago when Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori led his predecessor, Dy.Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire PDP structure in the state to switch allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governors met three weeks ago in Ibadan where they declared that the party would not join in the coalition talks being spearheaded by the PDP presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Oborevwori was absent at the Ibadan meeting.

Today’s meeting, which is due to take place at the Bauchi State Governors’ Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja is also coming amidst fears and uncertainties ahead of the long-awaited meeting of the party’s highest decision-making body, the National Executive Committee (NEC) on May 27.

Sources told The Nation yesterday that the PDP Governors’ meeting is expected to address the crisis in the party which has forced out the likes of Oborevwori, Okowa and others.

All three Senators of the party from Kebbi State are also on their way to the APC and observers say more are likely to jump the PDP ship soon.

Sources said legal intricacies surrounding the status of the PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who has been cast aside by the governors in favour of Architect Setonji Koshoedo, continue to simmer as the party prepares for the NEC meeting

A highly-placed source said that if the NEC meeting is not postponed on the basis of legal matters, there is strong likelihood that the proposed national convention may not happen until well after August.

The three major blocs currently working on strategies to push their agenda for the May 27 meeting are the PDP Governors, Atiku Abubakar bloc and loyalists of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

At the last meeting of the PDP NWC, which handles the party’s day-to-day administration, at Wadata Plaza in Abuja, the party’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Ilyas Damagum, announced their adoption of the entire resolutions made by the PDP Governors’ Forum at their April 14 meeting in Ibadan.

PDP NWC’s decision to align with recommendations from the PDP Governors’ Forum sets the stage for a high-stake showdown among contending power blocs with resolve to push their interests.

Although the PDP Governors’ Forum is not recognised under the party’s constitution, its recommendations that were formally adopted by the Damagum-led NWC include the rejection of the political merger or coalition that Atiku loyalists are strongly calling for, and a recommendation that the National Secretary position of Wike associate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, should be occupied in acting capacity by the Deputy National Secretary, Architect Setonji Koshoedo.

Also adopted were  recommendations for a Zoning Committee to be constituted under the trio of Governor Douye Diri (Chairman), Governor Dauda Lawal (Vice Chairman) and Governor Caleb Mutfwang (Secretary) to address all issues relating to the zoning of party offices while a National Convention Committee to be constituted under the trio of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri (Chairman), Governor Ademola Adeleke (Vice Chairman) and Governor Peter Mbah (Secretary) is to oversee PDP a national convention being scheduled for August 28 to 30 in Kano.

Sources said  while Damagum is now working well with the PDP governors with some assurance of either retaining the present office or his old position as Deputy National Chairman (North), there are indications that ongoing arrangements may still end up in disappointment as several members of the PDP NWC are now facing great odds for re-appointment.

For months, tensions have swirled over the fate of the Damagum-led NWC itself which split into two factions, doing counter-suspension of one another sometime last year before PDP governors called them to order.

Some of the PDP governors, members of the Atiku bloc and other groups within the party had openly called for the removal of Damagum and the entire NWC to be dissolved—a move that only the NEC, under the PDP constitution is empowered to enact.

For Atiku loyalists, PDP Governors’ position against a coalition as well as the choice of Governor Fintiri to head the national convention committee represents further danger signals.

However, Atiku loyalists are mobilising party leaders across the North and South towards complementing any possibility of achieving a firm end to the dominant influence of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike and his associate, Senator Anyanwu, by either supporting the constitution of a caretaker committee or having their loyalists in the ad-hoc leadership that would run the party’s affairs until a national convention takes place later in the year.

Ekiti PDP defies court order, holds local govt congress

Despite that an Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti restrained Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its caretaker Chairman in Ekiti State, Dare Adeleke, from conducting local government congress, the party yesterday went ahead and held the congress.

Adeleke claimed that the local government congress was conducted successfully without any hitch.

Adeleke, who lauded the party’s National Working Committee, security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for their support, also hailed the electoral panel led by a former National Vice Chairman (South) of the party, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, for their efforts.

He said the successful conduct of the exercise demonstrated the unity and commitment of party leaders and members in Ekiti State.

“We are indeed very impressed with today’s outing, which has sent a clear message to sceptics that PDP in Ekiti State is committed to one goal;  the success of our party, both as an entity and in future elections. With the cohesion and peace within the party, it is safe to say victory is sure,” he said.
