Stop PDP, INEC from accepting any other candidate, Ayogu Eze asks court

Senator Ayogu Eze yesterday asked the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja not to accept any other name as governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) other than himself.

In a suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/2014 filed by his Counsel, Yusuf Ali, SAN, Eze also asked the court to restrain the PDP, the National Working Committee (NWC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), by themselves, agents, officers, officials, privies or representatives and other person whatsoever deriving authority from them from submitting, forwarding or sending the names of any other person other than himself, as their duly elected governorship candidate for 2015 governorship election in Enugu State, pending the final determination of the substansive case.

”To restrain INEC, its agents, privies, or representatives from recognising, accepting or giving effect to the name of any other person other than himself as the governorship candidate of the the PDP and the NWC of the party for the Enugu State governorship election in 2015 as well as such further or other orders as the court may deem fit to make in the circumstances of this case.”

The plaintiff said that the PDP and NWC conducted ward congresses in Enugu State on November 1, 2014 as a result of which a list of delegates for the conduct of primary election for the governorship candidate of the party emerged, consisting names of the elected delegates.

According to him, the list was sanctioned and authenticated by the Federal High Court, Abuja, in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/816/2014, which judgement was delivered on November 24, 2014.

Eze further said that he emerged as the governorship candidate of the party based on the correct delegates list sanctioned by the same court, adding however that the defendants were bent on sending another person other than his name to INEC as their chosen governorship candidate for the said 2015 election.

He added that ”if the defendants were not restrained from doing so, pending the the determination of this case, the judgement of the court will be rendered nugatory.”

He further said that granting the application would not in any way prejudice the defendants herein.

2015: Nigerians told to reject PDP

A pressure group, the APC Volunteers (APC-V), has called on Nigerians to vote against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 general elections.

The group, which promotes the interests of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said the PDP and its government under the leadership of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan had thrown Nigerians into sorrow through problems created as a result of gross incompetence.

In a statement issued yesterday in Abuja and signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Barrister Olusegun Bamgbose, Nigerians were advised to vote for the APC described as the only party with solutions to the nation’s serious challenges.

The statement reads in part, “ It is becoming increasingly obvious from political developments that the possibility of the PDP surviving the 2015 general elections is very slim. The party has fallen from grace to grass. The party has been battered by many internal crises.

“Considering also the political mood of the nation and the people eagerly yearning for a change, the PDP’s chances of retaining power at the centre may be elusive. The time has come in the history of Nigeria when we must tell ourselves the whole truth. The PDP under the Jonathan administration has only succeeded in underdeveloping Nigeria. It is a case of outright failure on the part of the government.

“Jonathan has failed to properly address the problem of insecurity to the satisfaction of Nigerians. The rate of unemployment has consistently been on the increase. The infrastructural development has not been encouraging.

“After careful appraisal and analysis of the Jonathan administration for almost six years, it has become very clear that Jonathan lacks what it takes to move this nation forward. His best is not good for Nigeria. He is not competent to govern Nigeria beyond 2015.

“It is then proper to submit that with what we have on ground now, the opposition will likely form government in 2015. It will amount to be a political gamble to give the PDP another four more years to govern Nigeria.

“Our unity and peaceful co-existence as a nation are seriously at stake. The PDP government has succeeded in bastardizing the enviable image of our country both locally and internationally. It will be economically and politically injurious to permit the PDP to rule Nigeria for another four more years. Our unity has never been so fragile as we have it now.

“It is, therefore, politically expedient to kick out the PDP in 2015. One needs to understand that the PDP is terminally ill. It would, therefore, be politically suicidal to allow the PDP to govern Nigeria beyond 2015. Nigeria will certainly be in ruins should that happen.”

Court dismisses PDP bid to sack Amaechi, Kwankwaso, others

The Peoples Democratic Party has lost in its bid to unseat governors that decamped to the All Progressives Congress.

A Federal High Court in Abuja struck out on Friday the suit filed by the PDP, with which it sought to sack the four governors who defected from the party.

Justice Gabriel Kolawole, in a ruling that lasted about two hours held that the suit’s originating processes were invalid, on the ground that they were wrongly issued and served on the defendants.

The PDP had last December sued the governors, including a former Adamawa State governor, Murtala Nyako and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), asking the court to declare the defecting governors’ seats vacant, and for INEC to conduct elections for their replacement.

Nyako’s name was removed from the suit shortly after his impeachment.

The remaining four are – Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano) and Abdulfatai Ahmed (Kwara).

The party had, upon an order of court, served the originating processes on wrong address, which it claimed was the headquarters of the APC.

The service was faulted by the defendants, forcing the court to set it aside.

Justice Kolawole’s ruling was on the applications filed by Amaechi, Kwankwaso and Ahmed.

On His Victory at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2014 National Convention Eagle Square, Abuja

    Thursday 11th December 2014

    PROTOCOLS

    1.  Mr. Chairman, our dear delegates, today is another great day in the history of our great Party; The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and indeed in the history of our great Nation.

    2.  Nothing gives me greater joy, as leader of our party, than such an opportunity as presented today, for direct interaction with so many enthusiastic and dedicated fellow party members, and may I add, all proudly dressed in our party colours and regalia.

    3.  It is also my pleasure to be here as a delegate today and I welcome whole heartedly all our delegates, party members and all Nigerians, from across the country and beyond; including those joining us by television and online, as we gather here in the Eagle Square, to reaffirm the noble democratic traditions and foundations, that bind us together.

    4.  I thank the Party and the Organizing Committee for a successful convention. I thank all the delegates for a smooth nomination process.

    5.  Let me congratulate, the Chairman of our great Party, the game changer, Alhaji Ahmed Adamu Muazu. I have no doubt that the democratic process we have witnessed here today, and his confirmation as Party chairman, are both pointers to the consolidation of democracy in our country as a whole.

    6.  There is no doubt that his commitment to the ideals of our party, his consistency and hard work, has helped to reposition the party. And today we are stronger, bigger, and more in tune with the yearnings of our people. Let me also congratulate Professor Wale Oladipo and Alhaji Adewale Adeyanju whose appointments as National Secretary and National Auditor, respectively, have been ratified at this Convention.

    7.  Nigeria is undergoing great changes at this time, and also experiencing great challenges; so, political parties must rise above the fray, to provide hope and clear direction, to propel the development of our country.

    8.   As expected in every contest, especially political contests, the journey to this convention has not been without issues in some constituencies. Indeed, Party Congresses from the ward to state levels, and the legislative and state primaries, have produced both triumphs and some misgivings.

    9.  Without prejudice to various on-going resolution mechanisms, we will take steps, after the elections to review and refine the candidate selection procedures within our party. An appropriate committee will be set up to work on this, with contributions across board.

    10. I commend the efforts of the supervising and appeal committee members, who travelled across the country to conduct and oversee the primaries and congresses. I appreciate also the dedication of the various working committees and special committees engaged in organising and delivering all aspects of the election season programmes.

    11.  Fellow delegates, dear party members, while we congratulate our candidates who have emerged at the primaries, we must reassure all our members, that our party remains a large, accommodating and responsible party.

    12.  We will make sure that conflicts are amicably resolved and that the genuine interest of every member is respected and assured.

    13.  As party members, we must be conscious of the responsibility we hold to our Nation. The political party is the vehicle for national organisation, and the PDP is the foremost political party in Nigeria.

    14.  For the sake of the entire nation, we must, at this time, more than ever, stand together as one united party. We are all joint stake holders, this party belongs to all of us.

    15.  What we have achieved today should be a lesson to all who care about Nigeria. What we have done exemplifies our unity. What we have done exemplifies our determination. What we have done exemplifies our purpose.

    16.  We are a Party that accepts challenges. We are a Party that confronts those challenges. But above all, we are a Party that resolves challenges. And it is exactly these qualities that will lead us to victory.

    17.  Distinguished Delegates, ladies and gentlemen, I stand before you as your humble servant, to accept your nomination as the Presidential candidate of our great Party, the PDP.

    18.  Having placed great faith in me and chosen me as your candidate, I assure you, that I am truly honoured tonight, to lead another electoral contest.

    19.  This will be a campaign, and an election, that will serve to consolidate our successes.

    20.  I will give my all.

    21.  I will not let you down.

    22.  I will not fail the PDP.

    23.  I will not fail you.

    24.  Above all, I promise, I will not fail our great nation, Nigeria.

    25.  This convention shows that we are ready.

    26.  The PDP is ready.

    27.  Nigerians know we are ready.

    28.  And today in Abuja, we begin the next phase of our mission.

    29.  Our mission is to secure Nigeria’s future.

    30.  First of all, let me give gratitude to God Almighty who has sustained the nation.

    31.  There is much to say, but permit me some special words of gratitude. These last four years have not always been easy, but through it all, my wife has effortlessly taken care of our home. So to you, my companion and my foremost supporter, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    32.   I also want to thank, the Vice President, my brother, Arch Namadi Sambo, and his dear wife. You have both provided loyal support and commitment to this presidency; working with you for our people, has been a pleasure.

    33.  The work and progress recorded these past four years has been possible because we have had the best team possible. The Ministers, Advisers, Assistants and staff that have formed the Transformation team, have shown great dedication, creativity and loyalty.

    34.  They have put in extra hours when necessary, and always gone the extra mile to ensure delivery. Today, I thank them fervently for their patriotism and hard work.

    35.   Our Party, the PDP, has been the foundation of our Transformation Agenda. I thank the Chairman and Party Executive at all levels, the Board of Trustees and National Working Committee, the PDP Governors Forum, Federal and state legislators, Secretariat Staff and volunteers, across the country. You have played your part well, and I am indeed very grateful.

    36.  It is not a mere coincidence that our National Convention this year starts on the same day as the United Nations World Human Rights Day. This government, led by our Party, has made the respect of human rights and individual freedoms, the cornerstone of our administration.

    37.  I did say during my declaration on November 11, 2014, that we are proud that no Nigerian has been exiled or imprisoned on our watch, for holding contrary views. We must ensure that we continue to water the tree bearing the fruits of freedom, for our beloved people.

    38.  In the last 16 years, the PDP has kept faith with the Nigerian people by promoting and projecting a united nation, under God. We have united our people around common national goals for the good of our citizens and the development of our nation.

    39.  Through its years of office, our great Party, the PDP created the Anti-corruption agencies, that is, the EFCC and the ICPC, the Excess Crude Account, the Pension Reforms, Fiscal Responsibility Regime, the Sovereign Wealth Fund and various privatization programmes.

    40.  We initiated Debt Relief, the Amnesty Programme, the Presidential Jobs Creation Board, Power Sector Reforms and the National Infrastructure Master-plan; the Nigerian Industrial Revolution Plan, the National Automobile Policy, the Freedom of Information regime, the Nigerian Mortgage Refinancing Company, and the Infrastructure Bank, amongst others.

    41.  At the advent of democracy in 1999, Nigeria’s GDP was 35.9 billion US dollars. Today, it is 510 billion US dollars – and we have become Africa’s biggest economy.  In 1999, our debt to GDP Ratio was 93.1%. Today, it is 13.6 % of which external debt to GDP ratio is 1.89%.

    42.  As at 1999, only 400,000 telephone lines were active in our country. Today, we have about 120 million lines, which have created many more jobs for our youths.

    43.  This administration is also working to revitalize our insurance industry. Compared to other emerging economies, our insurance industry has not achieved its full potential. Today, only 3 million of our citizens are insurance policy holders, and overall insurance penetration is less than 0.5 percent of our GDP. We want to transform this sector, just as we have done for our banking sector and our pensions industry.

    44.  Our goal is to grow the total insurance premiums in our country from 300 billion naira currently to 1 trillion naira in the next three years. And to increase the number of direct jobs created in this sector from about 30,000 people today to over 100,000 people in the next few years.

    45.  My brothers and sisters, the PDP as a party has delivered on its promise.  In the last decade, it has seen to the largest expansion of the middle class in Africa.  Certainly, our Party has a rich history of enduring legacies.

    46.  For those who defected from the PDP, I enjoin you to tell the truth in your campaigns. Many of the developments in your States were initiated by the PDP. So be honest with the voters and give credit where it is due.

    47.  In adopting the umbrella as our symbol, we have become the umbrella of the nation.  Our politics has not been defined by our differences, but in forging the bond of oneness.

    48.  After our victory at the polls in 2011, we articulated a TRANSFORMATION AGENDA, which we have faithfully implemented. The agenda has created the framework of our desire to promote and deepen access to economic and social benefits, through equal opportunities.

    49.  The Transformation Agenda is helping to secure Nigeria’s future. Thanks to this Agenda we have remained focused, calculated and measured in our decision-making. We have focused on sustainable gains, rather than quick fixes. We have remained committed to our national maxim of Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress.

    50.  Today, it is to our collective credit as a nation, that in spite of our challenges, our unity remains solid. All across our nation, the positive gains of the Transformation Agenda are being progressively enjoyed by our people.

    51.  During this campaign, some office seekers will say it is “time for change”, but while they were changing from one name to another and from one party to the other, we had already brought change to Nigeria.

    52.  My dear delegates,

    53.  Has change not come to our railway system?

    54.  Has change not come to our airports?

    55.  Has change not come to our roads network?

    56.  Has change not come to our agricultural sector?

    57.  Has change not come to our electoral process?

    58.  Has change not come to Almajiri education?

    59.  Is change not coming to the power sector?

    60.  Distinguished delegates, ladies and gentlemen, what we need today is to consolidate on our gains in order to secure our future.

    61.  Our focus now must be on the future and not on the past. We have challenges but we are determined to overcome them. And this we will.

    62.  These last four years, my priority has been in building a strong and stable economy. We have created the enabling environment for businesses to thrive. These are essentials for securing Nigeria’s future.

    63.  Back in 2008 and 2009, the country faced strong economic challenges arising from unstable oil prices, but we confronted it consciously and overcame.  As the economic challenges of oil price-fall, looms in the months ahead, Nigeria needs tested hands that will provide certainty, in an uncertain world. We have a strong and capable economic team, which has already worked out strategies to manage the oil price volatility and curtail its effects.

    64.  Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, our fight against corruption is on course.  Our systematic efforts have been acknowledged   and we will do more in the coming years.  Corruption degrades development; we will continue this fight, without compromise.

    65.  In the past four years we have run our administration with respect for the principle of separation of powers between the different arms of government. The judiciary and the legislature have independently and introspectively pursued their own reforms and greater self-expression.

    66.  With a fresh mandate, we shall push for increased intra-party and bi-partisan harmony, within the legislature, and between the executive and the legislature. The duty of national development must never be hindered by the over-politicization of interests; this is what we owe our people, and our nation.

    67.  Dear party faithful, beyond security and corruption, there exist environmental challenges, such as desertification, which is threatening the lives of our people, especially in the frontline states of Adamawa, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara. We have responded most appropriately by implementing the Great Green Wall Programme for which we have released over N16 billion.

    68.  Our determination to provide a buffer of greenery that will stop the advancement of the desert and reverse the many losses of farmlands and grazing grounds, streams and aquatic life, among others, remains strong. Similar programmes are being implemented to save communities from erosion in the West, East, and the South-South parts of the country.

    69.  On my watch, the security of all citizens shall continue to be of utmost priority.  With the exception of the civil war, never before in the history of our country have we faced the level of threat we see today.  I assure all Nigerians that this Government will continue to do whatever is required to provide the security we deserve. It is encouraging that the security situation is improving, and by the grace of God, elections will be conducted in all states of the federation.

    70.  I call on all Nigerians, irrespective of party or belief, to join me in this fight against insurgency and terror.  We must be united. Bickering and quarrels only serve to send the wrong signals to terrorists and insurgents, that we are divided in this fight. More importantly it can also demoralise our dedicated and brave armed forces. This would be wrong. For this reason, we must remain united.

    71.  I believe that together as a people and with God on our side, we shall defeat terror and emerge an even stronger nation.

    72.  The experience in many countries shows that there may be a tendency for the escalation of violence in an election year. We must not succumb to blackmail.  We must be vigilant – every one of us. Only by united action, can we defeat terrorism.

    73.  I salute our gallant armed forces and security agencies who are doing their best to keep our people safe. We shall continue to ensure that they have the best in terms of equipment, training and conditions.  I appeal to our countrymen and women to provide them with the fullest support, and not to fall victim to those who fan the embers of terror.

    74.  As a political party, we must rededicate ourselves to the work of securing our future. We are the party of the people, and not just the elite.  We must lift the poor out of the depth of want, onto the ladder of prosperity.  We will work to ensure that no child suffers from basic needs. We must create equal opportunities for women and the physically challenged.  We must give a voice to all Nigerians.

    75.  And we can do all this!  Nigeria is not a land of despair. We are a people who show commitment and unity of purpose. Just look at how we stood up to the Ebola Virus Disease.  We are a hard-working nation. And we will go from strength to strength.

    76.  Our best days are before us, not behind us. We must continue to move forward.

    77.  In accepting your nomination as flag bearer for the Presidential Election, I once more accept the challenge to serve our party and nation. I will continue the work we have begun with the Transformation Agenda.

    78.  I will work to secure Nigeria’s future. I will serve with humility and moderation, with simplicity and forthrightness; with openness and inclusiveness, and with firmness and strength. I urge all Nigerians to support me, to finish what we started together.

    79.  Fellow citizens, what we need, more than anything else, is to secure our country’s future, by building, and not by destroying.

    80.  We can continue to build upon the foundations we have laid so far, we can continue with our economic progress, we can continue improving our infrastructure, we can continue delivering better health care, we can continue to improve our agriculture and we can continue to safeguard individual liberties and freedoms.

    81.  The choice before Nigerians in the coming election is simple: A choice between going forward or going backwards; between the new ways and the old ways; between freedom and repression; between a record of visible achievements and beneficial reforms – and desperate power-seekers with empty promises.

    82.  Fellow Delegates, dear Party members, so much is at stake. Let me remind everyone – party leaders, mobilizers, members, men, women and youth – that the hard work has only just started.

    83.  As your Presidential candidate and Party leader, I hereby commission all delegates and party faithful, as my campaign mobilizers, to take our message of unity and development back to your respective states and communities, and to ensure victory for all candidates of the PDP in the forthcoming elections. Working Together, we will do it!

    84.  Our political opponents shall assail us with the fury of their desperation to win power.  They will use every means – intimidation, false accusations, hostile media and more. Do not descend to their level. We must stay focused on the mission at hand – to secure Nigeria’s future.

    85.   Let me emphasise again, that nobody’s political ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian. We must eschew violence, even in the face of the most outrageous acts of desperation.

    86.   We must make sure our supporters have their voter’s cards.  We must get them motivated and eager to make their mark. It will be a mark for our children. It will be a mark for a stronger economy. A mark that will secure Nigeria’s future.

    87.  So my dear Party Men and Women, let us take this campaign to every Nigerian, every home and every community.

    88.  We will campaign in peace.

    89.  We will campaign with hope in our hearts.

    90.  We will campaign on the facts and the truth.

    91.  We will campaign with issues and ideas.

    92.  We will campaign on our record of performance.

    93.  We will campaign to win.

    94.  Mr. Chairman, Distinguished delegates,

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

    95.  Let me at this point invite to join me on this podium, the Chairman of our great party, Alhaji Ahmed Adamu Muazu; the Chairman of our Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih; the Senate President, Senator David Mark and his wife; my dear brother, the Vice President, Architect Namadi Sambo and his wife, and particularly, my dear wife, the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.

    96.  I seize the opportunity of this occasion to formally announce that as we commence the campaign for the 2015 Presidential elections, Architect Mohammed Namadi Sambo, a loyal and tested partner, a dependable, trustworthy gentleman and a true patriot will be my running mate and Vice Presidential candidate once again.

    97.  With your continued support and the blessing of God Almighty, Vice President Sambo and I will campaign together to win another resounding victory for our great party in the coming elections.

    98.  God bless you all.

    99.  God bless our great Party, the PDP

    100. God bless Nigeria

    101. I thank you all.

  • Kwara elders intervene in PDP primary crisis

Kwara elders intervene in PDP primary crisis

Concerned Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members, under the aegis of Elders’ Forum of PDP, intervened yesterday in the crisis rocking the state chapter of the party.

The elders’ forum warned the PDP national leadership against imposing any governorship candidate on the party.

It advised that the party’s postponed primaries should take place in Ilorin, the state capital.

Eleven of the 12 governorship aspirants on Tuesday attributed the botched PDP primaries to an attempt by some influential politicians to impose a candidate on the party.

Addressing reporters in Ilorin, the forum’s Deputy Chairman Ayinla Folorunso said: “The authentic/approved statutory and ad hoc delegates’ list should be maintained.

“We ran away from imposition. Therefore, we should not allow imposition in PDP. It’s true and genuine democracy we want. The quarrel is part of democracy. It’s not unusual that there’s presently infighting in the party. It’s because our party is popular, and we’ll get over it.”

The PDP chieftain said the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) should retain the same delegates’ list containing 709 delegates.

He insisted that accreditation and voting should be held at the same venue and on the same day the fresh governorship primaries would hold.

According to him, PDP local government chairmen should be allowed to identify delegates from their different local government areas.

Folorunso urged the party’s authorities to set up necessary committees to rectify the anomaly.

The PDP chieftain said the elders intervened in the party’s crisis to avert its possible disintegration.

He added that the aggrieved members had not met with the party’s executives because the chairman travelled to Abuja.

The forum’s spokesman said the identification of authentic delegates should be done by the 16 local government party chairmen on the spot of the election.

Folorunso noted that for orderliness and security, only authenticated delegates and authorised officials be allowed into the accreditation and voting centre.

The spokesman said the governorship primaries should be held in Ilorin, the state capital.

He said: “Regrettably, administrative lapses, particularly the multiplicity of venues for accreditation and voting, which caused delay and confusion in the accreditation of delegates till late in the evening, marred the arrangements for the elections.

“This development provoked tension and suspicion among the delegates, aspirants and members of the state executive committee of the party who handled the arrangement, thereby generating serious security challenges that caused the governorship primaries to be called off.

“We appreciate the patient and understanding and maturity so far exhibited by all the stakeholders, including the governorship aspirants, and wish to appeal to them to maintain the same spirit in the overall interest of over great party.”

  • Party youths: Bulama is killing Yobe PDP

Party youths: Bulama is killing Yobe PDP

Some youths of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yobe State have expressed concern over the manner in which the leader of the party in the  state, Dr. Abdul Bulama, is handling the party.

According to the youths, the fortunes of the party will be worse in next year’s election, compared to 2011, if Dr. Bulama, who is also the Minister of Science and Technology, does not embrace the principles of opennes and transparency like the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Muazu. Such disposition, they added, will help to bring the party back on track before the 2015 general elections.

One of the concerned youth, Abubakar Adamu, told reporters in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital that Dr. Bulama’s attitude is making the ruling APC in the state to garner more support at the expense of the PDP, whose fortunes have continued to diminish.

“I think President Jonathan needs to know that the PDP in Yobe State has ran into crisis again. We felt that our current minister who is the leader of the party in the state will carry everybody along, considering the several steps taken by our National Chairman Adamu Mauzu to salvage the party in the state. Unfortunately, Dr. Bulama is not a politician and he is not ready to learn from people on ground.

“We want the minister to realize that the party is very important to us and we are committed to working for its success come 2015, but Dr. Bulama has so far failed to provide the required leadership,” Adamu noted.

The Nation’s investigations reveal that the PDP has three factions in Yobe. Two of the factions are loyal to Adamu Waziri and Yerima Nagama, while the third group is made up of neutral persons interested in seeing sanity in the leadership of the party before next year’s general elections.

Spokesman to the state party leader, Hassan Ahmed has however refuted the accusations levelled against his principal, saying Dr. Bulama is working very hard to deliver the state for the party.

  • Security cordon in Abuja as PDP holds convention

Security cordon in Abuja as PDP holds convention

Abuja, the federal capital city wednesday came under heavy security cordon as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held its national convention in the city.

Combined forces of soldiers, police, Department of State Security (DSS) and the Civil Defence Corps were stationed within and outside the Eagle Square venue of the convention.

There was heavy security presence in other strategic locations in the capital city, with routes leading to the venue manned by heavily armed security personnel. As a result, motorists were forced to make a detour to their various destinations.

The two-pronged exercise saw to the ratification of the positions of the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, the National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo and the National Treasurer, Adewole Adeyanju.

The trio came on board the party’s National Working Committee to replace previous elected occupants of the positions who lost their seats to intrigues contrived by various powerful forces within the ruling party. The ratification was in compliance with the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution.

The exercise also gave official seal to President Goodluck Jonathan’s sole presidential candidacy. In all, 3073 delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory cast “yes” or “no” votes to affirm or reject Jonathan as the party’s sole candidate.

The same pattern was employed in the ratification of the tenures of Mu’azu, Oladipo and Adeyanju.

President Jonathan who is also a delegate, arrived the convention venue at 3.45 pm, accompanied by his wife, Patience; Vice President Namadi Sambo; President of the Senate, David Mark; Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu; Mu’azu; and the party’s Board of Trustees chair, Chief Tony Anenih.

Chairman of the convention committee, Dr. Bello Haliru Mohammed, in his welcome address‎, enjoined the delegates to be orderly.

Starting with the ratification of the three party officials, voting started at 6.15 pm.

PDP Primaries: 7 Kebbi guber aspirants demand rerun

Seven governorship aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State have demanded for the conduct of fresh primary elections over alleged irregularities.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr. Celestine Omehia, Chairman of the election committee, announced the suspension of the primaries after the aspirants objected and no results were announced.

The aggrieved aspirants, who met for several hours, outlined their grievances in a communiqué forwarded to the PDP National Secretariat saying that the election was full of violations of the party constitution.

The spokesman of the aspirants, Dr. Musa Zagi, said the aspirants also demanded for full investigation into the failed primaries and culprits penalised.

He said a parallel congress was conducted with only the favoured aspirant while there had been no screening and accreditation of delegates and the number of delegates not announced.

“The delegates register provided by the PDP headquarters was not in consonance with the list of delegates registered for the election while substitution of delegates’ names was rampant.

“The chairmen and vice chairmen of local government areas were allowed to vote while their tenure had expired and voters were intimidated and coerced to vote for the favoured candidate.”

“It was unfortunate that the suspension of the controversial congress was witnessed by Gov. Saidu Dakingari, Minister for Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki; National Treasurer of the party, Buhari Bala,” he stressed.

The state PDP Public Relations Officer (PRO), Umar Ummai, told NAN that final decision on the governorship primaries would be taken by the party’s National Secretariat.

  • Primaries chaos rocks PDP

    Primaries chaos rocks PDP

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders were yesterday battling to curtail the protests sparked by its rancorous governorship and assembly primaries.

Many  aspirants complained of being short-changed.

Some, such as former Oyo State Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, dumped the party. He is to join  the Labour Party (LP) today.

The Adamawa chapter of the party led by Governor Bala Ngilari will boycott the national convention holding today and tomorrow in Abuja —in protest against the Abuja primary  where former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chief Mallam Nuhu Ribadu was picked as candidate.

Eleven governorship aspirants in Kwara State vowed yesterday to prevent what they called the imposition of Mr. Dele Belgore as candidate.

The Ogun State chapter rejected the directive by the National Working Committee (NWC) not to hold its congress. It insisted that Gboyega Isiaka, who was elected at the congress, must be the candidate.

Senator IfeanyiArarume (Imo), Musiliu Obanikoro (Lagos), Deputy Governor Mukhtar Shagari (Sokoto) and Dr. Ali Pate (Bauchi), who lost governorship primaries, have kicked against the results.

Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba petitioned the National Secretariat, but House of Representatives member John Owah-Enoh, who defeated him for the Cross River Central ticket, said “he is a bad loser”.

    Oyo

Opponents of the candidate in Oyo State, Sen. Teslim Folarin, described the primary that produced him as “a charade” and “illegal”.

Alao-Akala said he had bidded the PDP a final bye. Oluseyi Makinde insisted that he would challenge Folarin’s candidature in court, if he is recognised by the party’s national leadership.

Another aspirant, Dr Azeez Adeduntan, described the primary as a “selection”, expressing regret for participating in the exercise.

Alao-Akala, who spoke through his media aide, Abraham Ojo, said he had left the PDP for Labour Party (LP), stressing that he could no longer tolerate “the injustice” in the party.

He said: “That primary was an illegality; it was an injustice to us.  It was ridiculous and outrageous. He wasn’t there but was awarded two votes.

“But we are not going to court. We have taken our position by moving with all our supporters to Labour Party. Alao-Akala has left for good.”

He said Alao-Akala would make official declaration for the LP at a yet-to-be finalised venue tomorrow.

Makinde said what happened yesterday was a nullity in the face of the law. “We shall pursue it legally to the end. As far as we are concerned, PDP is yet to have a governorship candidate in Oyo State.

“I did not participate in the election simply because there is a court judgment which was unequivocal on who and who should be the participants in the PDP primary. PDP electoral guidelines said, ‘For the purposes of nominating the party’s candidates, the party shall elect three ad-hoc ward delegates’. The court had already told us who the delegates are, but if the leadership of the party decided to circumvent the judgment by using statutory delegates only for the primary election, it is a breach of PDP electoral guidelines and, consequently, it is a breach of Electoral Act 2010 as amended.

“I am a law-abiding citizen of this country and the party and I believe that at the end of the day, reason will prevail.”

Makinde said he was also sure that President Goodluck Jonathan would never be part of the “charade that happened on Monday in the name of PDP primary”. He urged his supporters not to resort to violence as such method would worsen the situation.

“A process is on and a court of competent jurisdiction has given judgment already. As far as what happened on Monday is concerned, PDP is yet to elect its governorship candidate. All those involved in the suit were served, so PDP cannot claim ignorance of the Friday ruling. The ruling also restrained the  Independent National Electoral Commission from accepting any candidate emerging from primary conducted with delegates other than the delegates whose names appear in the exhibit submitted in support of the affidavit. The court also nullifies such primary. We will go back to court if INEC recognises the candidate. If PDP leaders refuse to do what is right, the party risks not presenting candidates for 2015 elections,” Makinde said.

Adeduntan said: “It was a charade; there was no election but selection. If I knew, I would not have participated. It would have been more honourable for me to have boycotted it. Yesterday was one of the saddest moments in my life. It would have been more dignifying for me if I stayed away.

Of the 198 valid votes, Folarin polled 167 to beat others.  Akala scored two votes. Adeduntan scored three. Prof. Soji Adejumo polled four. Hazeem Gbolarumi polled 12.

    Ogun

Ogun State PDP Chair Dayo Bayo described the reports that the exercise had been nullified by the National Working Committee as false.

Dayo, in a statement yesterday, maintained that all the primary congresses from the House of Assembly to the gubernatorial primary are valid and authentic. He advised party faithful as well as supporters to discountenance the contrary information.

He said: “The nullification report is false and misleading. Our findings at the national headquarters of our party confirmed that there was no National Working Committee meeting where such decision was taken.

“The National Executive Council meeting approved the guidelines and time table for the congresses and primaries which our party in Ogun State adhered strictly to from the conduct of congresses that produced the delegates to the primaries.

“Besides, there were judgments that empowered the PDP chapter in Ogun State to conduct congresses and primary elections and file the reports to the appropriate authorities, including the INEC.

“The party in Ogun State has fulfilled all righteousness and, accordingly, forwarded the results of the elections to INEC and all other relevant agencies.

“The Party in Ogun state also complied with the Party constitution article 25, which empowered the State chairman of our Party as chairman of the congresses to act accordingly and to which to all intent and purpose has been justifiably done.

“We therefore implore all our party faithful, supporters and the good people of Ogun State to disregard the news going rounds that the primary congresses in Ogun State have been nullified.

“We dismiss such report as it is false, misleading and emanated from enemies of progress.”

     Kwara

The Kwara aspirants under the aegis of the Forum of Governorship Aspirants, accused the leadership of the PDP in the state of working in concert with the minister for national planning and an influential woman politician to impose a candidate on them.

The forum’s chair, Senator Simeon Ajibola said “election never took place in the state in spite of the initial peaceful atmosphere and the cooperation of delegates who endured long delay for the accreditation process.”

All the PDP governorship aspirants except Belgore were present at the news conference.

Those at the event include Senator Suleiman Ajadi, Prof Shuaib Abdulraheem, Senator Gbemisola Saraki, Alhaji Hakeem Lawal, Bio Ibrahim, Engr. Sunday Babalola and Kale Belgore.

Others are Alhaji Abdullahi Sanusi, Alhaji Jani Ibrahim and Mr. John Dara

Said he: “While it is very unfortunate, ridiculous and undemocratic that some anti democratic and anti-people forces successfully disrupted and botched the peaceful and transparent process that began at the Stella Obasanjo Multipurpose Centre where delegates were accredited according to their local councils.

While it is worrisome and very disturbing that in spite of heavy presence of security agents the process began with several attempts to undermine it and subvert rules to pave way for rigging the primary election in favor a certain aspirant.

“We make this statement authoritatively that the party state leadership in connivance with security agents attached to a particular aspirant smuggled these fake delegates in. This undemocratic and unpopular act signaled the beginning of the crisis that consumed the process.

“We hereby state unambiguously that we will resist and collectively fight any attempt to impose any aspirant as the flag bearer of the party without a free, fair and transparent primary election.”

Belgore said that the allegations “fly in the face of facts and occurrences at the governorship primaries. Not only did these aspirants conspire to frustrate the exercise, they imported thugs to harass officials and party elders who do not share their desperation and unsportsmanlike conducts.”

In a statement, the 2011 governorship candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)’s media aide, Rafiu Ajakaye “acknowledged the efforts and sacrifices of party elders and officials who tried to ensure we have smooth primaries. It is unfortunate that their efforts were being sabotaged from within by those working for some outside forces.”

“Belgore is not afraid of a fair contest and that is why he has always conducted himself in manners conducive for democracy. But one thing is certain: this gang up will fail.”

    Imo

Senator Ararume said the electoral panel returned 1,027 votes counted whereas it declared 1,017 as total votes cast.

He wrote in a petition sent to the party headquarters, that there was an error in the result announced, which favoured Deputy House of Representatives Speaker Emeka Ihediaha.

In the keenly contested election which lasted into the wee hours of Tuesday, Ihedioha polled 436 votes to Ararume’s 336. Former Governor Ikedi Ohakim, scored 213 votes.

But Araraume insisted that there was an error in the result announced by the committee, adding that he got 336 votes while Ihedioha scored 325 votes as against the 346 “allotted” to him by the Committee.

The difference of the votes he claimed were counted for Ihedioha. He inisted the committee should declare him the winner, since according to him, he scored the highest number of votes in the election.

Araraume warned that PDP in the state would face a herculean task if the situation is not reversed.

    Sokoto

Sokoto State Deputy Governor Shagari who lost the governorship ticket to Amb. Abdullah Wali, in a statement last night, said: “The whole process was marred by irregularities including the dragging of electoral process to lapse into the night in order to achieve an objective.

“There was no election in Sokoto PDP”, he stated.

He also alleged that the committee refused to keep to the scheduled time and programme of events for the election, adding” the accreditation of 984 delegates started 6pm in the evening of the 8th December, 2014.

“Amazingly, it was followed with substitution of genuine and authentic delegates with new ones with the aim of rigging the election”.

“I even protested to the electoral committee orally and in writing that the best option is to halt and postpone the conduct of the election until proper arrangements are made to allow free and fair electoral contest.

“There were series of allegations that the process that will lead to the success of the congress which included the election of party executives and delegates could not be conducted in consonance. With the party’s guidelines.”

Shagari urged the party to immediately setup an unbiased Electoral Committee made up of credible men and women of proven integrity to conduct the primaries in Sokoto state within the shortest possible time.

    Adamawa

Adamawa State PDP told President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday to count them out of the national convention.

The stakeholders, aspirants and 21 local government chairmen accused the national leadership of the party of imposing unpopular candidates, “against the wish of the people.”

“It is our collective view that anything short of cancellation of this kangaroo primary by the NWC of our party will leave us with no option but to follow the views of the entire great majority of the people of Adamawa state.

“We therefore resolve to abstain from the national convention of the party scheduled for today at the Eagle Square, Abuja “said Chief Joel Hammanjoda Madaki, state chairman of the party.

Madaki added: “With the flagrant and open abuse of the rule and law with impunity with regard to party primaries and is a thing of serious concern that is heading to the complete eradication of the party in the minds of our grassroots supporters.”

Seven governorship aspirants, including Gen Aliyu Kama, Dr Ahmed Modibbo, Mr. Markus Gundiri, Hon Awwal Tukur, Sen Andrawus Sawa, and Governor Ngillari, who was represented by his campaign Director General, Sen. Abubakar Girei, said the election was held contrary to the electoral act and party guidelines which stated that should there be any change of election venue, there must be a notice of not less than seven days.

“But unfortunately in the case of Adamawa state all the delegates and aspirants were in Yola without any communication either from INEC or the party in Abuja, while a purported election was said to have taken place in Abuja”.

Elders of the party like former Governor Wilberforce Juta, Commodore Dan Suleiman and Dr. Bamanga Tukur who was represented, vowed to oppose the Abuja impunity.

Ngillari said: “It is our unanimous resolution to distance, condemn and reject it in its entirety.”

    Cross River

Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba has petitioned the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) National Assembly Electoral Appeal Panel, alleging lapses and irregularities in the Cross River Central Senatorial primary election.

The primaries held on December 7, 2014 in Ikom. The member representing Etung/Obubra Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr. John Owan Enoh, was declared the winner.

A petition signed by Ndoma-Egba, dated December 8 and addressed to the Appeal Panel Chairman read: “The exercise was fundamentally and fatally flawed as it fell short of the minimum integrity for an electoral process. The exercise was in complete disregard of the PDP’s Guidelines for Primary Election 2014.

“The list of delegates used for the primaries was not made public. This was imperative as two lists were in circulation… and my agent, Mr. Ernest Irek, protested but was shouted down. My agent tried to impress on them that there was a list that had INEC approval but they resisted. The Electoral panel Chairman, Mr. Oko Inaku insisted that he was using the list given to him by the party without disclosing which of the two lists in circulation he was using.”

The senatorial candidate of the PDP for Cross River Central, Mr John Owan-Enoh, scoffed at claims by Ndoma-Egba, that the primary was flawed.

Owan-Enoh, the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, said the comments credited to Ndoma-Egba indicate that he is a bad loser.

    Bayelsa

Barring any change in plan, the Bayelsa State PDP faction loyal to First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan will move to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Dame Patience, it was gathered yesterday, was disappointed that members of her camp, especially the federal lawmakers, failed to clinch the tickets.

She was said to be unhappy at the way Governor Seriake Dickson stamped his authority on the process, ensuring that members of her camp were edged out.

Incumbent senators who lost out in the primaries are Senators Clever Ikisikpo and Heineken Lokpobiri.

Though Lokpobiri was still laying claim to the ticket, it was learnt that Dame Patience had advised him to look up to APGA as the alternative platform.

Others in the House of Representatives who failed in their bids to fly the PDP’s flag are Henry Ofongo (Southern Ijaw), Warman Ogoriba (Yenegoa/Kolokuma-Opokuma) and Nadu Karibo (Ogbia).

The aggrieved lawmakers were said to have held marathon meetings in Abuja to consider the option of defecting to APGA to confront Dickson’s  candidates in the general elections.

A member of the camp, however, said there was no plan for loyalists of the First Lady to move to APGA.

  • Sylva’s senatorial bid unsettles Bayelsa PDP

Sylva’s senatorial bid unsettles Bayelsa PDP

    •Aganaba, Julius win APC tickets

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was thrown yesterday into confusion after learning that former Governor Timipre Sylva had indicated interest to run for the Senate.

Investigations revealed that already, Sylva had been cleared by his party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), to contest the Bayelsa East Senatorial District in next year’s general elections.

Party sources said the former governor obtained and submitted the senatorial forms by proxy and was declared the party’s unopposed candidate.

Others, who clinched the senatorial tickets of the APC for 2015, are Preye Aganaba (Bayelsa Central) and Mr. Eddy Julius (Bayelsa West).

While Aganaba is to slug it out with the incumbent Senator Emmanuel Paulker, who won the PDP’s ticket, Julius will battle either Dr. Foster Ogola or incumbent Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, who are still laying claims to PDP’s Bayelsa West Senatorial ticket.

But the confusion in the PDP came against the backdrop of fear within the party that its candidate for the Bayelsa East, Mr. Ben Murray-Bruce, might not match the political clout and popularity of Sylva.

It was learnt that the decision to hand over the party’s ticket to Sylva was strategic.

“It is a fruitful move. We were waiting for the PDP to bring out their candidate and we thank God it was Ben Murray-Bruce”, a party source said.

Bruce, the former Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), emerged at the weekend as the PDP’s candidate with 139 votes.
