Tall dreams as ex-ministers crash out of race for governor

They never foresaw bumps in the race  but the shadow poll staged by the Peoples Demcratic Party (PDP) aborted the governorship dreams of some former ministers and senators, writes  Musa Odoshimokhe.

THEY were full of high hopes when they quit the Federal Executive Council (FEC). They had left to pursue their political ambitions – to be the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of their states.

However, all but one of such former ministers may have had their tall dreams shattered at the primary elections conducted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) across the states on Monday.

Of the seven ministers who left the President Goodluck Jonathan-led FEC, only Mr. Nyeson Wike, a former minister of State for Education got the delegates’ endorsement to fly the PDP flag at next year’s election. The rest suffered defeat.

    Obanikoro

In Lagos, the former Minister of State for Defence, Mr.  Musiliu Obanikoro is yet to come to term with the loss of the PDP governorship ticket to Mr. Jimi Agbaje, a pharmacist, who recently defected from the Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA). Agbaje got the party’s nod after polling 432 votes to Obanikoro’s 346 at Yard 158, on Oregun Road, Ikeja venue of the primary election.

Obanikoro has since rejected the result and described the poll as a sham. Before the election, the former minister had seen himself as an aspirant far ahead of others. He had relied on his credentials as; former local government chairman, former commissioner, former senator, former ambassador, former board chairman and a federal minister to   clinch the ticket. It was, however, a different ball game when the curtain was dropped on the poll.

He is rooting for the cancellation of the election as according to him, certain forces plotted his failure. Obanikoro specifically named Chief Olabode George, a leader of the PDP in the Southwest, as the arrow-head of the plot. The forces, Obanikoro alleged, skewed the process against him.

The one-time Ambassador to Ghana wondered how the number of delegate rose from 806 to 867.

    Ngilari

Incumbent Adamawa Governor, Bala Ngilari failed pick the PDP ticket at the primary held at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja. He was defeated by former anti-corruption Czar, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP.

Ngilari and five other aspirants were humbled by the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), who polled 688 votes. The governor scored 26.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP had moved the primary to Abuja following accusation that the governor was tampering with the process.

The panel sent to Northeast state to conduct primary election for the State Assembly accused Ngilari of holding its members hostage.

Ngilari, who was deputy to impeached Governor Murtala Nyako, was reinstated as governor after convincing a Federal High Court, Abuja he did not resign his position.

His hope of consolidating on what his administration is bringing to bear in the state collapsed on Monday even as he has kicked against the conduct of the primary in Abuja.

    Wogu

The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, with 33 votes, came third at the PDP governorship primary in Abia State. He was defeated by Okezie Ikpeazu, who polled 487 and the runner-up, Mr. Uche Ogah, who polled 103. Losers at the poll described the process as an extension of Governor Theodore Orji’s administration beyond 2015.

Wogu had resigned from the FEC to contest for the governorship ticket of Abia State. He was under pressure from his kinsmen to vie for the exalted position.

The kinsmen are from the Ngwa Ambassadors’ Association, Abiazurumee Grassroots Development Initiatives and Aba Ngwa Political Consultative Forum.

    Ibeto

The Deputy Governor to Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, Ahmed Ibeto, lost the bid to succeed the governor. He was beaten by Aliyu’s Chief of Staff (CoS), Alhaji Umar Nasko.

Nasko recorded 908 votes to clinch the party’s ticket. The chairman of the governorship primary, Senator Jubril Matins-Kuye commended all the delegates for their peaceful conduct.

The cordial working relationship hitherto enjoyed by Ibeto with the governor was not enough to see him through. The relationship went sour after the deputy governor reportedly defied Aliyu’s body language not to join the governorship race.

    Alao-Akala

Former Oyo State governor Christopher Alao-Akala’s ambition to stage a comeback to the Agodi Gate Government House on the platform of the PDP ended with the primary at the Liberty Stadium. He was defeated by former Senate Leader Teslim Folarin, who scored 167 to defeat his closest rival, Hazeem Gbolarunmi.  Gbolarunmi, who was deputy to Alao-Akala, scored 12 votes. Alao-Akala scored two.

Barring the unforeseen, the former governor is set to defect to the Labour Party (LP) tomorrow. A statement credited to Alao-Akala quoted him yesterday as saying that he has left the PDP for good.

    Bankole

Though the PDP leadership had cancelled the primary in Ogun State, former House of Representatives Speaker Dimeji Bankole and other aspirants lost the ticket to Alhaji Gboyega Isiaka at the primary conducted by a faction of the PDP in the Gateway State.

    Pwajok

The Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Ignatius Longjam lost the governorship ticket to Gyang Pwajok, a  Senator.

Pwajok polled 492 to defeat Longjam, who scored 163 while the former governor of the state, Fidelis Tapgun was also defeated. Tapgun scored one vote.

    Ohakim

Like Alao-Akala in Oyo State, former Governor Ikedi Ohakim failed to keep his dream of returning to the government house alive. He lost House of Representatives’ Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha at the primary held at Owerri, the state capital.

In the aftermath of the keenly-contested election, Ihedioha scored 246 to beat Ifeanyi Araraume, who recorded 236 votes, Ohakim (213 votes) and Senator Chris Anyanwu (10 votes).

    Maku

Former Minister of Information Labaran Maku’s dream of leading the PDP out at the governorship election next February suffered a setback. He was defeated by Alhaji Yusuf Agabi, who polled 214.

    Edevbie

The defeat of Mr. David Edevbie by Senator Ifeanyi Akowa at the PDP shadow poll proved bookmakers wrong. His loss was seen as a defeat for incumbent Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan. The governor was backing Chief Anthony Obuh before he queued behind Edevbie at the eleventh hour.  Akowa polled 406 against Edevbie who scored 299. The former Delta State House of Assembly Speaker, Victor Ochie scored 185.

    Chukwu

Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, the former Health Minister, boycotted the governorship primary, in which the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Steve Umani emerged as PDP’s standard bearer.

The former minister, who wrote his name on the sands of time for the role he played in the war against the deadly Ebola Virus, resigned from the FEC to take a shot at Ebonyi Government House on the platform of the PDP.

The primary which took place at the Abalikiki Township Stadium, was supervised by the Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose.

  • Reps primary valid, says Ekiti PDP

Reps primary valid, says Ekiti PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State has insisted that the primary election conducted in Ekiti North Federal Constituency 2, which produced Thaddeus Aina as winner, was valid.

The party faulted the position of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that there was no election in the federal constituency on Saturday and that the procedure violated the minimum electoral standards.

INEC deplored the conduct of the midnight primary at Ido/Osi Local Government secretariat, saying reports from its officials who observed the exercise showed that no voting took place.

The electoral umpire said it would not recognise the primary on the grounds that “there was no evidence that the primary took place as its observers did not witness it”.

But the PDP maintained that a primary election was conducted and that it conformed to extant rules.

In a statement by the PDP State Secretary, Tope Aluko, the party stressed that “primary election is purely an internal affair of political parties”.

The party said INEC should wait until there was a legal action, challenging the exercise that produced Aina, adding that an Appeal Committee was in place to take care of grievances emanating from the primary.

The PDP insisted that the primary election took place in accordance with all extant rules and the candidate emerged.

The statement said: “In accordance with our party rules guiding conduct of primary elections, Thaddeus Aina emerged as the House of Representatives candidate and that remains valid.

“There was an Appeal Committee for aggrieved aspirants to approach for complaints and as at today, we are not aware that the Appeal Committee cancelled the exercise.

“We are also not aware of any of our party member complaining to INEC and joining the commission in any suit, challenging the outcome of the primary so as to warrant INEC making any statement.

“Therefore, we state that Thaddeus Aina is our party’s candidate for Ekiti North Federal Constituency II, and INEC should wait until there is a legal action challenging the process that produced him.”

  • Jonathan ready for debate with APC candidate – PDP

Jonathan ready for debate with APC candidate – PDP

President Goodluck Jonathan is ready for public debate with any aspirant that emerges as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh , stated this at a press conference at the party’s Abuja national secretariat on Tuesday.

He said the debate will focus on a wide range of issues affecting the country, adding that the President would be ready for the APC candidate after the ratification of his candidacy on Thursday.

The party spokesman said 3,073 delegates are expected to participate in the PDP convention where the President’s sole candidacy is expected to be sealed.

Metuh said: “As a party, we are going into the conduct of our presidential primaries, in particular, with great excitement, knowing very well that we are keeping an appointment with the destiny of our nation as embodied by Dr. Goodluck Jonathan who is both President of our nation and candidate of our party on the occasion of our presidential primaries at the Eagle Square.

“The PDP is rest assured that we have a very good product to sell to Nigerians. We are confident that President Jonathan, as our candidate, is primed to win the 2015 presidential election based on his popularity deriving from his forthrightness, humility and steadfastness to the Nigerian project, coupled with his record of verifiable achievements.

“We are today serving notice to the opposition APC to expect a crushing defeat at the polls. In view of our confidence, preparedness and the popularity of our candidate, we declare that the APC can put forth its two frontline aspirants in one bunch, namely Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as joint presidential candidates with their collective credentials and followership to face our candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan.

“The President has been able to stabilize the polity by his pan Nigerian outlook and approach to governance. The stability of our nation has strengthened national unity. Today, he has been able to give every geo- political zone a sense of belonging in terms of infrastructure development, economic and human capital empowerment.”

The party said no other leader had united the Nigerian people more than Jonathan had done, adding that the President has continued to act on the side of caution in the counter insurgency campaign.

“President Jonathan has stabilise the economy. The rebasing of the economy has made Nigeria the largest economy in Africa and 26th in the world.

“For us in the PDP, it is neither a matter of conjecture nor propaganda; we are certain that with the grassroots support and the love he enjoys from Nigerians across board, President Jonathan will secure an emphatic victory at the polls.”

  • Primaries: PDP in disarray

    Primaries: PDP in disarray

Bookmakers were yesterday proven right: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) congresses were a mixed grill — of thuggery, boycott and confusion.

Here is the picture of how it all went in the states as of the time of going to the press last night:

    Lagos

Guns boomed at the Yard 158 Event Centre on Oregun Road, where thugs loyal to some aspirants clashed. Policemen fired tear gas to control the unruly thugs. Former Minister of State (Defence) Musiliu Obanikoro and businessman Jimi Agbaje were the front runners.

Dogs were unleashed to bring the situation under control.

Guns, knives, bottles were deployed in the battle of supremacy between supporters of the leading aspirants.

One of the aspirants, Mr. Babatunde Gbadamosi (aka BOG), wore a bullet proof vest. He told reporters that he was protecting himself from being hit by a stray bullet.

Gbadamosi said: “I am wearing the bulletproof vest because I am afraid of being shot. I am urging all my supporters to come and not be intimidated.

“There is fear of intimidation and some people in the party want to intimidate the delegates, but we will ensure that everyone will vote freely as it pleases them.”

He said it was unfortunate that the party leadership was supporting an aspirant.

The leaders would have their say while the delegates would have their way, Gbadamosi said.

A reporter of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Chioma Ugboma, was one of the injured after the melee. The policemen arrested some of the thugs.

As at 3 pm, accreditation of about 900 delegates had not begun.

Former Deputy Governor Kofoworola Bucknor Akerele was barred from the gate by security personnel because she did not have accreditation.

Mrs. Bucknor Akerele tried to call party leaders but it did not yield any fruit. She walked away after being left stranded for over 20 minutes.

There was confusion after voting when the Chief Returning Officer sorted out the votes (863), which exceeded the number of delegates (803).

    Ogun

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cancelled the primary election in Ogun State.

A statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, said the PDP did not authorise any governorship primary in the state.

“Consequently, any such exercise held in Ogun State is hereby declared null and void and of no effect. A new date will be communicated for the primaries,” the statement added.

Before the statement, Prince Gboyega Isiaka had emerged the candidate.

Isiaka, who was the governorship candidate of the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) during the April 26, 2011 governorship poll, defeated 11 other contestants.

He polled 705 votes. The closest contestant to him, Mr. Kayode Amusan, scored 151 votes. Ten other contestants, including Prince Yanju Lipede, Tony Ojesina and Abiodun Akinlade, scored zero votes.

Representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from the national and state headquarters, including David Asemo, Clement Idoko and the commission’s administrative secretary in Ogun, Dickson Atiba witnessed the exercise.

The primary which was conducted by the Bayo Dayo – led state Executive Committee, began amid uncertainty. Accreditation of delegates could not begin until noon. Voting began at 2: 25p.m amidst doubts that it may not hold, following the directive by the national leadership of the party, which ordered a postponement.

Amusan, Prince Segun Adewale and Isiaka attended. Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Dimeji Bankole, Yanju Lipede and Isiaq Abiodun Akinlade among others stayed away.

    Rivers

The Rivers State chapter of People Democratic Party (PDP) Primary election which was held at the open field of   Nkpolu Primary School in Obio/Akpor Local government Area  produced Chief Nyesom Wike as the candidate.

Wike was declared the winner  by the state electoral panel after pulling 1083 of the 1108 votes cast by the delegates from 23 local government areas.

Of the 24 aspirants announced by the electoral panel at the beginning of the election, only six, including Wike, were present at the venue. It was learnt that other aspirants boycotted the primary because of court case on the outcome of the state congress.

At the primary were Senator Lee Maeba, Ibinabo Micheal West, Emmanuel Georgewill, Captain Nwankwo Sunday and  Dembari Ben Dimkpa.

Georgewill got one vote. West got three votes and Dimkpa got 21 votes.

Each of the aspirants had one agent. They were assisted by some INEC officials and other observers at the venue of the election.

The election which started with accreditation of the aspirants in the morning before the proper voting by 12pm, ended peacefully. Other aspirants accepted the outcome of the result.

Some of the aspirants said the victory is for the party and noted that the best thing to do by other aspirants is to join the Wike train to deliver Rivers State from the hands of their enemies.

Wike said he was very happy. He dedicated it to God. He also promised to work with other former aspirants ensure victory come 2015.

Wike said:  “I am deeply humbled and elated by the electoral success at this state congress of our great party. It is unique and interesting that you have found me worthy to be entrusted with the enormous task to fly the flag of the party in 2015 in Rivers State.

“I dedicate this victory to God Almighty who made the victory possible. It is victory for democracy; it is a victory for all of us who have struggled day and night as foot soldiers of PDP in Rivers State.  I hereby invite my follow contestants as worthy gladiators to join hands with us to move Rivers State forward.

“At least, for the task of ensuring  victory in Rivers State and the task of ensuring the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015. And in my honour I extend the olive branch to all combatants. We should work together to assiduously recover everything.”

    Ebonyi

Ebonyi State Deputy Governor Dave Umahi has emerged the candidate.

The primary, which took place at the Abakaliki Township Stadium, was contested by eight aspirants, including, Mr. Paul Okorie, Dr. Aja Nwachkwu, Chief Hycinth Ikpo, Senator Paulinus Igwe Nwagu, Chief Michael Ude Udumanta and Senator Offia Nwali.

Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu, former minister of. Health and some aspirants loyal to Governor Martin Elechi, boycotted the primary.

In all, there were 592 delegates. The chairman of the Ebonyi gubernatorial electoral panel and Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, declared Umahi, who polled 541 votes as the winner.

Other members of the Electoral Panel include Mr. Chineneye Oji, Hajia Hauwa Kida, PDP State Chairman Onwe Joseph Onwe and Hon. Deinma Iyalla.

Umahi thanked God for his victory, stressing that his loyalty to Elechi remained intact even as he asked the Governor to forgive him in anyway he (Umahi) must have wronged him.

Also, yesterday,  Senator Anthony Agbo emerged the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate.

Agbo, the only candidate on the ballot, garnered 507 of the 516 votes cast by the delegates.

Nine of the votes were declared invalid by the Anara Chikodi led gubernatorial primaries committee.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) congress was still ongoing at the time of filing this report.

    Cross River

A PDP aspirant, Mr Godwin Jedy-Agba, pulled out of the primary yesterday.

At the primary, which was held at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar, former National Planning Commission Executive Secretary Fidelis Ugbo dropped his aspiration.

Ugbo said the same also went for three other – Mike Aniah, Legor Idagbor and Larry Odey. He said they would work for wheover emerged the party’s candidate.

Those, who contested in the election were Ben Ayade, Francis Eworo, Peter Oti, Emmanuel Ibeshi and Joe Agi.

Jeddy-Agba, in a statement issued in Calabar, said his withdrawal was hinged on the grounds that the delegates’ congress list was fraught with irregularities.

“The party has confirmed our initial suspicion and fears that they were desperately committed to excluding Prince Goddy Jedy  Agba from all democratic processes leading up the fulfillment of his gubernatorial ambition.

“From the initial proclamation that he was not a member of the party to the cancellation of the November 1st ad hoc delegates congress, his purported suspension from the party and now, the mutilation of the delegates list, it is doubtful that the playing field for the intended Cross River State PDP governorship primaries would be sufficiently balanced.

“Even when one does not feel a sense of worry for the PDP if it loses Cross River State to another party in the governorship and general elections, it is time our political leaders learnt how to take decisions that would build our democracy than destroy it. Democracy is about more than holding elections. A real and true democracy should reflect the will of the people.

“Finally, we are left with no option than to withdraw from the race, for now, but we urge all our supporters to continue to show love to all. No matter how they feel about the process, there is NO room for justice in Cross River PDP. So you must be guarded in your emotions. We must not let our hearts rule our heads, otherwise we may say or do things that would project us as being ungrateful to the Master Finisher, God,” the statement said.

    Taraba

The primary election did not hold in Taraba state yesterday.

Delegates and party supporters were seen gathered at the Jolly Nyame Sports Complex in anticipation of the poll, but it did not hold.

Some of the delegates who were simply identified as “UTC delegates” went violent. They attacked supporters of Darius Ishaku who is also contesting the PDP governorship ticket.

Eye-witnesses said they carried cutlasses, axes and other dangerous weapons.

An aide of the aspirant, Stephen Ibrahim Agya, said they were attacked at the PDP State Secretariat while pasting posters of their candidate (Ishaku).

He said 10 of their supporters were severely wounded and two vehicles vandalised.

It was gathered that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP has not being able to resolve some of the internal electoral procedures.

Since the commencement of PDP House of Assembly, National Assembly and governorship primaries in other states, Taraba has been left behind.

No primary has been conducted yet. No date has also been fixed. Party supporters yesterday said they were confused.

    Enugu

A member of the House of Representatives Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi yesterday picked the Enugu PDP governorship ticket.

He polled 933 votes against his opponent the Speaker of Enugu House of Assembly, Hon. Eugene Odo’s 26.

Senator Ayogu  Eze after disagreeing with the electoral committee over the list to be used, organised a parallel primary where he declared himself winner with 530 votes.

Two of the aspirants, Chinedu Onu and Anayo Onwards stepped down for Ugwuanyi while Sam Onyishi withdrew at the last minute.

Members of the electoral committee include King Asara A. Asara as chairman, Nkiru Ukpai, Saratu Umar, Aleme Adeyemi and Ikeje Asogwa.

At the congress were Governor Sullivan Chime and his deputy, Deputy Senate president Ike Ekweremadu, state chairman of the party, Ikeje Asogwa and his deputy Hon. David Ajah.

Also all the members of the National Assembly from Enugu state with the exception of Senator Ayogu Eze were present.

A former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, former national chairman of PDP, Okwesilieze Nwodo, ministers, and all the statutory delegates attended.

    Oyo

Former Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin, yesterday emerged the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State.

A major contestant for the PDP ticket, former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala and three other aspirants shunned the primary. They are: Seyi Makinde, Femi Babalola and Isaac Owolabi. They did not show up at the primary held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium (formerly Liberty Stadium), Ibadan.

Of the 198 valid votes, Folarin polled 167 to defeat his closest rival, Hazeem Gbolarumi, who scored 12 votes. However, Alao-Akala scored two votes. Prof. Soji Adejumo polled four and Dr Azeez Adeduntan three.

In all 211 statutory delegates were accredited for the election. Ten votes were invalid.

The party had held ward congress twice, but the results were rejected by the majority of the aspirants, and consequently nullified by the party’s national leadership. The two congresses were also challenged in court.

Folarin described his election as a great honour and privilege. He promised not to betray the confidence reposed in him .

Makinde, it was learnt last night, went to court to challenge the primary. He was said to have hinged his decision on the Friday ruling which validated the delegate list used for the November 24 ward congress whose result was later thrown away.

Alao-Akala reportedly defected to the Labour Party (LP) as the primary was being conducted yesterday. Unconfirmed reports said the former governor directed his supporters to move to the LP. But a statement from its campaign group, Team Akala, said the governor only appealed for calm among his supporters, adding that he would soon announce the next step after due consultation.

Before he left the venue, one of the candidates, Adejumo remarked that the election was not proper in the sense that aspirants were not allowed to present themselves to the delegates before it began.

He said his observation as raised before the Abba Aji-led electoral committee was dismissed as he (Adejumo) was  told that such was not in the guideline given to him.

Adejumo, a former chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), expressed reservation about the totality of the exercise, stressing that the idea of using statutory delegates was not in consonance with the party’s constitution as well as the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.

    Adamawa

Adamawa State Governor Bala Ngilari protested the primaries conducted in Abuja which produced former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman Nuhu Ribadu.

In an open letter to the National Chairman titled: “Illegal and improper plan to hold Adamawa state governorship primaries election congress at Abuja in flagrant bread of the guidelines,” the governor along with other aspirants – Awwal Tukur, Marcus Gundiri, Abubakar Girei, Brig. Gen. Aliyu Kame and Dr. Ahmed Modibbo Mohammed – complained about the sudden change of venue and the change of delegate list.

They alleged that “the list of delegates was changed and substituted by people hat were hired in Abuja while authentic delegate from Adamawa State were left in Yola as they could not be convened because of the sudden change of venue of the primary election.”

There was a huge disagreement over the list of qualified delegates to vote in the PDP primaries in Kwara State.

As a result, the primary was shifted indefinitely.

    Katsina

Eight out of the nine governorship aspirants walked out of the Katsina NYSC orientation camp venue after Katsina State Governor Ibrahim Shema voted.

Those who walked out are:  Senator Ibrahim Muhammad Ida, Mr. Kabir Barkiya, Tukur Jikamshi, Nasiru Dutsinma, Ahmed Aminu Yaradua, Musa Nashuni, Nura Khalil, Umar Abdullahi Tsauri and Gide Aminu Yaradua.

Governor Shema had declared Musa Nashuni as  his preferred successor. The aspirants declared the process a charade.

Chairman of the electoral panel Abubakar Muazu said the panel noted the observations raised by some of the aspirants “and will adjust the ones that are adjustable but others that are in line with the party guidelines will not be tampared with”

Muazu said 1,372 delegates were accredited.

  • Primaries widen cracks in Bayelsa PDP

Primaries widen cracks in Bayelsa PDP

Cracks in the Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have widened after the National Assembly primaries of the party at the weekend.

It was learnt that the primaries led to the emergence of two camps employing various means, including holding parallel elections to deliver their loyalists.

One was the camp loyal to Governor Seriake Dickson and the other was the bloc loyal to the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.

It was learnt that some Abuja politicians, including the federal lawmakers from the state and many disgruntled members of the party, belong to the camp loyal to Mrs Jonathan.

The First Lady’s group was also said to be fighting to protect the political interests of President Goodluck Jonathan in the state.

While many aspirants from Mrs Jonathan’s camp boycotted the primaries, others held parallel congress elsewhere.

Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, representing Bayelsa West was among Mrs Jonathan’s loyalists who held a parallel congress in Sagbama Local Government Area on Sunday.

Lokpobiri claimed the party’s ticket alongside Dr. Foster Ogola, who emerged from the primary where Dickson voted.

Ogola was declared the winner by a Returning Officer, Mr. Oforji Opoku, after one of the factional primaries held at the office complex of Sagbama College of Education.

The returning officer said Ogola won with 69 votes defeating five other contenders.

It was further observed that most statutory delegates belonging to the anti-Dickson’s camp refused to participate in the elections where the governor’s camp produced the candidates.

A few statutory delegates including the former Acting Governor of the state, Mr. Nestor Binabo, were absent at the venue where Ogola emerged.

But Binabo and some statutory delegates who were absent at the venue where the governor voted, were present at the Sagbama Primary School II where Lokpobiri was declared the winner.

Declaring him the winner, the Returning Officer, Mr. Peter Bukumo, said Lokpobiri won five others with 93 votes.

The two parallel primaries had officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in attendance and security cover.

Also, Binabo protested the outcome of the Sagbama-Ekeremor Federal Constituency’s election where Mr. Fred Agbedi, was declared the winner.

Binabo said despite being an aspirant for the House of Representative’s position, he was barred from the venue of the election.

He said all his efforts to access the venue where the election was held was rebuffed by stern-looking security operatives.

He said security operatives told him that they received an “order from above” that he should not be allowed into the premises where Dickson, voted on Saturday,

Describing the development as an infringement on his fundamental human rights, Binabo appealed to the national leadership of the party to cancel the exercise.

He said the primaries failed the acid test of due process, fairness and other requirements for internal elections prescribed by the party.

But the camp of Dickson had maintained that the elections were fair, credible and peaceful.

Speaking after voting on Sunday, Dickson urged PDP members to work together to ensure the emergence of credible representatives that would give effective support to the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan.

He congratulated the contestants and delegates on their maturity and peaceful conduct.

He also called on the political class across the country to listen to the voice of the people to ensure quality leadership.

He said: “I want to congratulate all the contestants and the people of Bayelsa West Senatorial District and the faithful members of our party for this transparent and all-inclusive primaries that have taken place.

“To me, the Senatorial District has spoken and this is the time for political leaders and those who seek to lead to listen to the voice of the people.

“I congratulate you all and look forward to an all-inclusive campaign that will lead to the election of a credible representative. I, again use this opportunity to urge our people to shun politics of violence.

“Let us work as members of one family and stand to send our very best as we have done to support the President come 2015.”

PDP chieftain hails Jega for voter registration

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, Mr. Segun Adewale, has hailed the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, for the registration of voters and distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

He, however, advised that the exercise should be made less cumbersome and a continuous one like the collection of international passport and driving licence.

Adewale, who spoke on the state of the nation after he and members of his family collected their PVCs at a polling unit in Alimosho, said if the exercise was a continuous one, it wouldn’t be cumbersome.

He added that INEC should utilise its 774 area offices and make it compulsory for citizens above 18 to register and collect their PVCs.

Adewale, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Aeroland Group, noted that the collection of the PVCs was necessary to ensure that eligible voters were not disenfranchised.

INEC annuls Ekiti PDP Reps primary

The joy of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) top contender for Ekiti North 2 Federal Constituency, Thaddeus Aina, was cut short yesterday less than 48 hours after he was declared winner of the primary election conducted in the area.

The hammer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fell on the primary election conducted in the federal constituency, which comprises Ido/Osi, Moba and Ilejemeje local government areas.

The electoral umpire said the primary election conducted on Saturday violated basic electoral standards, hence it did not recognise the result returned from the constituency which declared Aina, an ally of Governor Ayo Fayose winner.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Halilu Pai, said no primary election known to law was conducted in the federal constituency, hence its cancellation by the electoral umpire.

Speaking through INEC spokesman Taiwo Gbadegesin, Pai said the commission cannot accept the result of a primary conducted in the middle of the night.

He stated that the electoral commission did not recognise the primaries in the two constituencies.

He said: “The PDP claimed that there were primaries in those places, but to us in INEC, we believed no primaries were held.

“This Commission cannot recognise primaries conducted in the middle of the night as election, because reports by our electoral officers indicated that the primary election did not begin in the constituency as at 8.30pm. So when was the election conducted?

“It is the responsibility of this commission to ensure that things are done rightly and it is on that we stand.

“We owe it a duty to say the truth now to prevent future backlash. It is the responsibility of this commission to ensure that things are done rightly and it is on that we stand.

The electoral agency had not given a date for the conduct of a repeat primary for the federal constituency.

The former secretary to the state government, who hails from Onna Local Government Area of the state, clinched the governorship ticket after gathering a total of 1201 out of the 1266 votes casted by delegates but 6 votes were void.

  • PDP faces crises in Kwara, Ogun, Oyo, Lagos, others

PDP faces crises in Kwara, Ogun, Oyo, Lagos, others

For the first time since 1998, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing massive crises over the choice of its governorship candidates in 29 of the 36 states.

The development forced the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party into a long meeting yesterday.

Earlier on Saturday night,  President Goodluck Jonathan, was solving intra-party wranglings on governorship primaries till 12.30am.

The party is worried about seemingly vicious battles for its tickets in at least 17 states.

The states are: Adamawa, Lagos, Bauchi, Imo, Abia, Delta, Ebonyi, Rivers, Cross River, Oyo, Ogun, Benue,  Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger, Enugu and Kwara.

The crises became more complex following President Jonathan’s reported failure to allow the outgoing governors pick their successors – in line with the pact he reached with them at the Presidential Villa to get his adoption for a second term. Topping the senators who got their ticket to recontest are Senate President David Mark (Benue) and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu (Enugu).  Some of those who also won their tickets are:

Senators Smart Adeyemi (Kogi), Joshua Dariye (Plateau), Danladi Sankara (Jigawa) and Enyinaya Abaribe (Abia), among others.

New entrants in the race are Ben Murray Bruce (Bayelsa), Chris Uba (Anambra), Ighoyota Amori (Delta), Buruji Kashamu (Ogun)and Sam Egwu (Ebonyi)

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) also elected yesterday its  senatorial standard bearers in Anambra – the only state the party controls.

Party chair Victor Umeh and former Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Executive Chairman Ernest Ndukwe won the ticket.

Major candidates who picked the APC House of Representatives tickets are Minority Leader Femi Gbajabiamila (Lagos), House spokesman Zakari Mohammed (Kwara), Kwara State House of Assembly Speaker Razak Atunwa and former Minister Funke Adedoyin (Kwara).

Ndoma-Egba, seeking a fourth term,  was defeated in the Cross River State Central seat by House of Representatives Appropriation Committee chair John Owan-Enoh, who was supported by Governor Liyel Imoke.

Owan-Enoh polled 217 votes as against Ndoma-Egba’s 37 votes. Egbe Mark, with 20 votes, came last.

Former Rep Mao Ohuabunwa polled 103 to win the Abia senatorial seat held by Chukwumerije. At the primary held at Ohafia Local Government secretariat, his rival David Ogba Onuoha  won 67 votes while  Chukwumereije came a distant third with 21 votes.

Ugbesia, a protégé of PDP Board of Trustees chair Tony Anenih, lost then Edo Central ticket to Clifford Ordia who won 141 votes to the senator’s 61.

Amori floored Aguariavwodo with 237 votes to 46. Others are Solomon Edoja, who scored 41 votes and Chief Kate Erueh, who polled six votes.

Mr. Foster Ogola, with 69 votes, will take Lokpobiri’s seat if he wins the general election.

Murray-Bruce, the chairman of Silverbird, the entertainment outfit, with 138 votes, will take the place of Ikisikpo, who scored zero in the primary.

In Anambra and Ondo states, there were parallel primaries.

The Pro-Governor Olusegun Mimiko group in Ondo State elected

former Senator Bode Olajumoke for North District, incumbent Senator Ayo Akinyelure for Central and Mr. Yele Omogunwa for South.

The old PDP faction elected Dr. Olu Agunloye for North, Olusola Adegbesua for Central and Agboola Ajayi for South Senatorial District.

The old PDP through its newly appointed Publicity Secretary, Gani Mohammed, said they conducted their primaries due to the fact that their own delegates were declared by the court as authentic.

But, Mimiko, who monitored the process in the Central, addressed the party’s electoral panel headed by Adewale Afolabi in Akure, saying the crisis in the party was over.

Senator Usman lost to Dr. John Danjuma Laah who pulled 129 votes as against Nenadi’s 123 votes.

Senator Ahmed Makarfi representing Kaduna North Senatorial zone won the primary unopposed.

In Lagos the PDP picked 2011 governorship candidate Ade Dosunmu for (Lagos Central), Bisi Salis for (East) and Segun Adewale (West).

First lady of Kogi State Mrs Faridah Ijeoma Wada floundered to a third position in the hotly contested House of Representatives ticket for Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency in Imo State.

Senator Smart Adeyemi (Kogi West) won his return ticket. He defeated Tolorunju Faniyi by 216 votes to 77 to retain the PDP ticket

  • PDP faces crises in 17 states

PDP faces crises in 17 states

It was learnt that shortly after Jonathan’s  adoption, First Lady Patience Jonathan, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Anyim Pius Anyim, members of the Board of Trustees(BOT), ministers, some presidential aides and ex-governors became  interested in anointing governors.

As at press time, the fate of hitherto anointed candidates of the governors was unknown, leaving many state helmsmen to go into pacts with the President.

Some of those unsure of their automatic tickets are  Governor Bala Ngilari; ex-EFCC Chairman, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu;  House Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha; ex-Senate Leader Teslim Folarin; ex-Minister Emeka Wogu; ex-Minister Ali Pate;  former Minister of Health Prof. Chukwu; ex-Permanent Secretary Tony Obuh; a former General Manager (Crude) of NNPC, Mr. Jeddy Agba; ex-Minister Musiliu Obanikoro; ex-Governors Ikedi Ohakim and Bayo Alao-Akala.

Others are the President of Pan African Parliament, Hon. Bethel Amadi; Sen. Chris Anyanwu;  Ngozi Olojeme; House of Representatives member Ndudi Elumelu, ex-Minister Samuel Ortom; Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi;  Auwal Tukur, son of the suspended former PDP National Chairman Bamanga Tukur; ex-Minister Nyesom Wike; ex-Minister Labaran Maku and Sen. Solomon Ewuga, among others.

A member of the NWC, who spoke in confidence, said: “The PDP has never been in this mess. We have had issues from the election of delegates to the imposition of candidates.

“The governors are also insisting on the ‘gentleman agreement’ they had with the President. As you are resolving a problem in a state, another crops up. Yet, contrary to our permutations, the APC seems to enjoy more stability than the ruling party.

“I can tell you that we are likely to have more post-primaries challenges to address than presently the case.”

Another top party source said: “Already, there is tension in the party as some chieftains like Governor Martin Elechi and ex-Governor Bayo Alao Akala, threatening to defect if the perceived injustice from ward congresses and House of Assembly primaries are not addressed.

“Some of the governors are displeased with the situation of things. They are regretting tagging along with the President instead of taking their destiny in their hands.”

In Nasarawa State, the party is in disarray on who to choose among veteran governorship aspirant Sen. Solomon Ewuga, ex-Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku and Deputy Governor Dameshi B. Luka.

Although these stakeholders joined forces to move against Governor Tanko Al-Makura, the plot has backfired as they refused to agree on a consensus candidate among themselves. It a tough terrain for Maku who had looked forward to an easy ride.

In Adamawa, the Principal Secretary to the President, Amb. Hassan Tukur, yesterday appeared to have had his way  in installing his age-long friend Ribadu with the shift of Adamawa National Assembly and governorship primaries to Abuja by the NWC of the PDP in defiance of the guidelines.

With the boycott of the primaries by Governor Bala Ngilari and five other aspirants, Ribadu may emerge the PDP candidate today.

The aggrieved aspirants are Auwal Tukur, Marcus Gundiri, Sen. Abubakar Girei, Brig-Gen. Aliyu Kama and Dr. Ahmed Modibbo Mohammed.

Apart from shifting the battle to court, there may be protest votes in Adamawa State by PDP stakeholders and members.

The aggrieved stakeholders have protested to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying the primaries are not in line with pages 6, 7 and 8 of the PDP Electoral Guidelines for Primary Election 2014.

When Jonathan hosted Ngilari and 11 stakeholders at the Presidential Villa on Saturday night, they protested against the shift of the National Assembly and governorship primaries to Abuja.

At the meeting were ex-NADECO chieftain Air Commodore Dan Suleiman, ex-Governor Wilberforce Juta, ex-High Commissioner to Britain, Gen. Haladu Hananiya, Sen. Abubakar Girei, Sen. Grace Bent, Col. Andrawa Sawa, ex-UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Modibbo and Gen. Aliyu Kamar.

The source said: “They urged the President to call the National Secretariat of PDP to order as its action may cause disunity in Adamawa State chapter.”

Though Jonathan promised to “look into” their grievances, the party went ahead to conduct the primaries last night in Abuja.

For the gubernatorial race in Imo State, ex-Governor Ikedi Ohakim is banking on his family’s relationship with Mrs. Jonathan to take on Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, who ought to enjoy automatic ticket, going by the pact between the PDP members in the National Assembly and President Jonathan.

But the Presidency is yet to forgive the plot in the House of Representatives in June 2011 which led to the emergence of Speaker Aminu Tambuwal and Ihedioha against the party’s zoning formula.

The contest in the state has turned more complex because Sen. Ifeanyi Ararume,  the political godson of the Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih, is also jostling for the ticket.

Others in the race are Sen. Chris Anyanwu, the President of Pan African Parliament, Bethel Amadi and the Director of Mobilisation of PDP, Jerry Chukwueke.

Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan is under pressure from the presidency to drop his anointed governorship candidate, Tony Obuh, as the flag bearer of the PDP.

Uduaghan’s loyalist are opposed to the plot, warning Jonathan of dire consequences for his re-election in 2015.

Uduaghan had at a secret meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan traded off his senatorial ambition to pave the way for Obuh’s emergence.

But barely few days after, some forces have started mounting pressure on the Presidency to dump Obuh, following growing opposition against his candidature in Delta State.

Those on the card from Urhobo land to replace Obuh are a former executive member in Delta State, Obaisi Ovie Omo-Agege, Paulinus Akpeki and ex-Principal Secretary to late President Umaru Yar’Adua David Edevbie.

The Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU) had earlier recommended Obaisi Ovie Omo-Agege(first choice) and Paulinus Akpeki( second choice). Ovie Omo-Agege was reportedly flown to Abuja yesterday from Delta State to meet some Presidency officials, but this could not be immediately confirmed.

Besides the Urhobo factor, Uduaghan has to contend with National Chairman Adamu Muazu whose close friend, Sen. Ifeanyi Okonwa is also seeking the governorship ticket. Others in the race are a former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Victor Ochei;  ex-Minister Kenneth Gbagi (a godson of Ijaw leader Chief Edwin Clark); ex-Minister Godsday Orubebe; Elumelu; former presidential aide Sylvester Monye and the former Chairman of NSITF, Ngozi Olojeme, who is said to be the First Lady’s favourtie.

But pro-Uduaghan forces in PDP are opposed to any plot to supplant Obuh.

A source said: “Any attempt to drop Obuh will not augur well for the unity and development of the state. It is a betrayer of Uduaghan who has done much to demonstrate his loyalty to the President and the party.

“In a practical demonstration of his commitment to the party’s success in 2015, Uduaghan on Friday sacrificed his senatorial ambition for the anointing of Obuh.

“The President should not shortchange Uduaghan because dropping Obuh will affect Jonathan’s re-election bid in Delta State. He might end up not getting 25 per cent of the votes from this state.”

With the battle over the right list of delegates still in and out of court in Oyo State, Alao-Akala is fighting the political battle of his life against forces from Ibadan, including the Minister of State for FCT, Oloye Jumoke Akinjide, who is interested in Ibadan retaining the office. Akala faces stiff opposition from ex-Senate Leader Teslim Folarin; moneybag Seyi Makinde (whose list of delegates was endorsed by a Federal High Court) and Kehinde Olaosebikan, a journalist.  Though Alao-Akala is rated high for the slot, the Presidency is not keen on him “because of his incurable loyalty to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo. It was gathered that Alao-Akala’s supporters are working on Plan B, either in Labour Party or Accord Party, if he is eventually “humiliated” by the PDP.

Another gladiator with Plan B is Elechi, who has lost control of delegates to the combined forces of Anyim and ex-Governor Sam Egwu. Chukwu, who is Elechi’s choice, is already left in the lurch because the Anyim-Egwu alliance favours Deputy Governor Dave Umahi. For Elechi and all aspirants who had earlier received his backing, defection seems the only option.

In Bauchi, the PDP National Chairman is rooting for the former Secretary to the Federal Government, Yayale Ahmed from Katagum Emirate. The governor, Alhaji Isa Yuguda, who is a specialist in grassroots /populist politics, is watching by the sideline. Yayale is to slug it out with  a former Minister of State for Health, Prof. Mohammed Ali Pate(the only aspirant with international backing ) who is with Bill Gates Foundation. Others are Deputy Leader in the Senate Abdul Ningi, Babayo Garba Gamawa, Adams Ibrahim Gumba, Aminu Hammayo and Auwal Muhammad Jauta.

Both President Jonathan and Muazu may have to realign their interests in Bauchi State. Jonathan is trying to reward Yayale for his loyalty when the late President Yar’Adua was ill and he aspired to be Acting President Muazu also wants to take full control of the state, which he lost in 2007 to Governor Isa Yuguda.

With the court rulings in his favour, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu is now  in charge of the PDP in the state. This change of political fortunes has humbled Governor Sullivan Chime, who is trying to appease Ekweremadu to uphold the concession of the governorship ticket to his lackey, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. He has to choose from the following aspirants from Enugu North Senatorial District: Ugwuanyi, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, Sen. Ayogu Eze, Hon. Eugene Odo, a businessman, Dr. Maduka Onyishi and Chinedu Onu. Chime’s undoing was his alleged snubbing of Ekweremadu  when the Deputy Senate President offered the olive branch. If the court had not ruled in Ekweremadu’s favour, he would have been stranded.

In Rivers State, the pendulum swings towards ex-Minister Nyesom Wike, who is the first choice of the First Lady. Though 16 aspirants have been crying foul within their closets, they have not been campaigning like Wike.

Wike is set for a triumphal contest. But the aggrieved aspirants may vent their anger during the general elections.

In Lagos, ex-Minister Musiliu Obanikoro and businessman Jimi Agbaje, who is returning to the gubernatorial turf since 2007, are set to slug it out. Obanikoro said last week that he will not be vying for the slot with Agbaje but his sponsors who he named as Chief Olabode George and ex-Minister Adeseye Ogunlewe. Others are Gbadamosi, Doherty and Kamson.

Ogunlewe said yesterday that the party would reject candidates with thurgery background. He named nobody.

The “caucus” in Taraba State, silently being bankrolled by ex-Minister of Defence Gen Theophilus Danjuma,  is backing ex-Minister of State for Niger Delta Darius Ishaku, who is from Takum(Danjuma’s home) in the southern part of the state. Though  three other aspirants, including the sacked Acting Governor Garba Umar, David Sabo Kente and John Musa, are challenging Darius, they may not go far because the Danjuma group is entrenched.

The signal from Cross River State last night, with the loss of senatorial ticket by Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba, showed that Governor Liyel Imoke has regained his rhythm.  The fight to the finish will be among “Aso Rock boy” Jeddy Agba(ex-GM Crude of NNPC) and Imoke allies(Senator Ben Ayade and a former Executive Secretary of the National Planning Commission, Fidelis Ugbo). Reports indicated last night that Imoke’s camp was having the upper hand the list of delegates.

The governorship race in Abia State is between the Presidency and  Governor Theodore Orji. Orji is backing a former Chairman of Abia Environmental Protection Agency, Okezie Ikpeazu. The Presidency’s favourites are oil magnate Sampson Uche Ogah and ex-Minister of Labour and Productivity Emeka Wogu. While Ogah may be enjoying the subtle backing of the Minister of Petroleum Resources, the ex-Minister depends on the First Lady to sail through. Others seeking the seat are Deputy Governor Acho Nwakanma, businessman Friday Nwosu, Okey Emuchay and a former MD of Hallmark Bank, Sir Mark Wabara. The governorship ticket tussle in Abia will be determined by cash because some aspirants are believed to be richer than the state government.

Though Governor Jonah Jang is completing a good but troubled tenure, he has a last battle at hand. He intends to enthrone   Sen. GNS Pwajok from Plateau North, contrary to the zoning formula  in favour of Plateau South. The forcible attempt to alter the formula may lead to PDP losing the state unless Jang retraces his step today at the primary.

Others in the crowded race are Amb. Ignatius Longjan, John Alkali, Sen. Victor Lar, Jimmy Cheto, Prof. Wapmut, Chief Godfrey Miri and Prof. Sunny Tyoden.
