Security agencies have taken over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat following a heated clash between Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye over the party’s National Secretary position.

Tensions flared when Anyanwu and Ude-Okoye arrived for a Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting.

The situation escalated after an aide to Anyanwu forcibly ejected Ude-Okoye from the closed-door session, triggering a confrontation between both camps.

Security forces intervened to prevent further unrest. The dispute over the National Secretary position began after Anyanwu vacated the seat to contest the Imo governorship election, which he lost.

External forces threatening PDP’s unity, Wabara, Damagum warn

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, and the party’s acting national chairman of the party, Ambassador Umar Ilyas Damagum, have raised concerns over external forces attempting to manipulate the party’s leadership, warning that such interference threatens its unity, focus, and direction.

Speaking at a PDP Board of Trustees meeting at the party’s national secretariat on Thursday—just before tensions escalated—they expressed deep concern over the party’s current state.

They emphasised the need for stability and affirmed that the PDP National Executive Council (NEC), the party’s highest decision-making body, should convene in February to address pressing issues.

Wabara said: “This meeting comes at a time when the unity, focus direction and ideals of our great Party are being tested in ways that call for reflection and decisive action.

“Primarily, let me express my profound disappointment over the crises currently rocking the leadership of the National Working Committee (NWC); as elder statesmen and women, leaders who hold the trust of the generality of our party members and the public, it is disheartening that these issues have not been resolved.

“The failure to resolve these internal conflicts undermines the strength and credibility of our party; it is therefore imperative that the NWC rises above personal interests and places the survival and progress of our great party above all other considerations.

“In the light of these challenges, I must emphasize the urgent need for a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting; I again urge the NWC to honour its words and convene the NEC meeting as scheduled in February 2025.

“It is pertinent to stress that party members across the country are in earnest expectation that the NEC meeting will be held this February,” Wabara stated, adding that PDP remains the only hope for Nigerians.

In his speech, Damagum lamented that some highly influential personalities whom partymen look up to as leaders are tormenting crises within the party leadership, with various mischief that include inviting members of the PDP National Working Committee to secret meetings without informing him.

“I want to say this with the highest sense of responsibility, part of this crisis that you see today within the NWC, is propelled by our leaders who are supposed to unite us; it is very unfortunate and I would say it the way it is.

“I’ll be sitting down as the chairman only to see or hear about my members in PDP NWC being called by certain leaders to visit certain places, for secret meetings without my knowledge; each one of you, if you are the chairman, will find this difficult and I want to use this opportunity to caution us, caution our leaders.

“You may have ambition, but you don’t ride on a dead horse to reach your destination: if you create crisis simply to further your ambition, you may get what you want, but your dream will not be realized, because by that time, you have injured the horse you are going to ride to that destination,” Damagum said.

Pointing out that the PDP has successfully concluded state congresses in about 29 states, Damagum expressed concerns that the unnamed leaders could try to infuse some m8schief into the Zonal party congresses being planned by the PDP.

“Even at that, I enjoin our leaders to also be mindful of doing anything that can mar these congresses; It’s very important to sound this note because whatever we do, it is the structure you are building to hold what you have at your hand,” he added.

Speaking further, Damagum acknowledged that some of them are complicit part of the party’s problems, adding that arrangements will be made towards convening the PDP NEC meeting in February.

“As the conscience of this party, some of us are also complicit; we should look inwards, search our conscience.

“This party is dear to all of us, it is the only thing we have, the hope of Nigerians today is on this party, so we should sheath our swords, and work towards uniting ourselves so that we’ll have a credible vehicle that can challenge what is bedeviling us.

“At the last meeting we had with the governor, we all agreed we’ll have an NEC meeting; I want to assure you that we’ll do everything possible to have this NEC meeting this February,” Damagum pledged.

PDP leaders at the BoT meeting on Thursday include former PDP Caretaker Chairman and Secretary of BoT, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, Hajia Inna Ciroma, Senator Ben Obi, Chairman of PDP Reconciliation Committee, Col Olagunsoye Oyinlola (rtd), former Niger state governor, Alhaji Babangida Aliyu while those who sent apologies for their absence included Senator David Mark, Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum, Gov Bala Mohammed, ex-governor of Gombe state, Alhaji Dankwamb9 and Professor Jerry Gana.

‘Our candidate won last Edo governorship poll’, PDP chieftain claims

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Oseyili Anenih, claimed yesterday that his party’s candidate in the last governorship election in the state, Asue Ighodalo, won the election.

Anenih, who acted as PDP’s Director of Research and Strategy during the election held on September 21, 2024, said if lawful votes cast at the election were sincerely collated, his party’s candidate would have emerged victorious.

He spoke while testifying as a petitioners’ witness at the resumed sitting in Abuja of the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which is hearing the petition by the PDP and Ighodalo, challenging the outcome of the election.

Anenih, who is the 12th petitioners’ witness, described as a star witness, also claimed that most copies of the results that agents of the party made available to him in his party’s situation room were not signed.

He told the tribunal that although there were 4,519 polling units in Edo State during the election, the petitioners were challenging results from only about 765 polling units.

He admitted that he could not visit all the polling units during the election, saying most of the evidence the petitioners were relying on were based on reports submitted by their agents and experts.

Under cross-examination by lawyer to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), Anenih said although the petitioners did not have any physical access to the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines used for the election, they got some screenshots of it, which they tendered in evidence.

He said the petitioners had since subpoenaed the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) to make the machines available before the tribunal.

He said the petitioners have since subpoenaed the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) to make the machines available before the tribunal.

Under cross-examination by lawyer to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Emmanuel Ukala (SAN), Anenih said he was not trained by INEC to play any role during the election.

He agreed that none of the polling unit results was handed over to him personally by agents of the party.

The witness added: “Some of the local government collation agents brought their results straight to me because they were not allowed access to the state’s Collation Centre.

“Some copies of election results in the Form EC8A that were handed to the agents were not legible.

“It is however not correct that majority of the results that were brought by our agents were not stamped by INEC, though some of them were not.

When handed a copy of the results already tendered, the witness noted that out of 16 copies of the results in the bundle, only three were stamped.

He added: “To us, that three that were stamped was significant enough. It represents almost 20 percent.”

The proceedings were however brought to an early end when the petitioners could not call additional witness, claiming their intended witnesses suffered travel disruptions.

Petitioners’ lawyer, Adetunji Oyeyipo (SAN) explained that his clients’ proposed witnesses, “suffered travel disruptions.”

He added: “My lords, this is the reason we are unable to present them today. We urge your lordships to give us another date.

Tribunal’s Chairman, Justice Wilfred Kpochi expressed discomfort a out the development

Justice Kpochi added: “What you are just telling us is not good at all. Why then did we ask the other petitioners to take dates?

“We should have heard them today. In fact, call those your witnesses. Tell them to come, we are ready for them to come today.”

Responding, Oyeyipo further pleaded with the tribunal to adjourn till a later date, following which the tribunal adjourned till January 30.

Aregbesola, supporters working for PDP in Osun – APC alleges

The Osun state chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has accused the former governor of the state, Rauf Aregbesola, and his Omoluabi Progressives Group of serving as agents of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

APC spokesman, Kola Olabisi, stated that the Osun APC is not bothered by the exit of Aregbesola’s group from the party, alleging that the former minister had left APC since 2022.

He said: “The preposterous announcement of the so-called Omoluabi Progressives to quit the APC is a good riddance to bad rubbish. They have either been expelled or suspended from the party. How would any rational human being who has been suspended or expelled announce his resignation to the whole world again?

“We, in the Osun State APC, shall be happy to miss the political irritants and deviants who had since left the party by way of body and soul before the 2022 governorship election in the state. You are agents of the PDP in Osun State and they are still of service to the ruling party in the state.”

He added: “Osun APC is waxing stronger by the day. Our message to the frustrated Omoluabi Progressive handlers is that whoever wants to bury his elder brother nakedly should take along his younger brother to show the latter how he too would be buried at the end of his journey of life.”

The Nation reports that Aregbesola, who served as Osun State governor for eight years, formed a faction within the APC known as The Osun Progressives (TOP)—now renamed Omoluabi Caucus—which opposed the re-election bid of his successor, Adegboyega Oyetola.

In response, the APC leadership expelled and suspended Aregbesola’s allies who either accepted appointments from Governor Ademola Adeleke of the PDP or were perceived to have worked against the party during the 2022 and 2023 elections.

Aregbesola cited his reason for leaving the APC as the party’s declining popularity and claimed that its leadership had sidelined him and his supporters.

The Omoluabi group led by Aregbesola, in a statement by the group’s spokesperson, Abosede Oluwaseun, on Sunday announced the exit of the group from the APC in Osun State.

The group stated that their exit from the party was caused by ostracisation and the suspension of the group’s leaders from the APC.

    • Disclaim lawyer in Court of Appeal, Supreme Court petitions

The protracted crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has assumed a new dimension with 11 of the 17 members of the party’s National Working Committee challenging the authority of Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum to appoint a counsel to represent the party in a legal battle at the Supreme Court.

The dissenting NWC members, including Deputy National chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja, National Treasurer Yayari Ahmed and Deputy National Secretary Sotonji Koshoedo, are disclaiming Dr. J.Y. Musa (SAN) as the party’s counsel in the appeal filed by National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, at the Supreme Court.

Anyanwu is contesting his removal as National Secretary by a high court and the December 20, 2024 affirmation of the judgment by the Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu.

He has filed a stay of execution of the judgments on his removal at the apex court.

However, the dissenting PDP NWC members, in separate petitions to the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, said the right to pick a lawyer for the party is solely that of the National Legal Adviser.

The NWC faulted Damagum’s decision to pick a lawyer for the party, saying it “did not authorise the Acting National Chairman to issue the letter under reference for the party, the National Working Committee or the National Executive Committee.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the responsibility of appointing external solicitors to handle cases on behalf of the party is that of the National Legal Adviser pursuant to Article 42 of the party’s Constitution and not that of any other NWC member,” they said in the petitions.

Continuing, the petitioners said: “The Party had reiterated this position in a public notice issued sometime in 2022, copy of which is hereby attached.

“We therefore urge the Supreme Court to disregard the representation of Dr. J. Y. Musa or any other person appointed by the Acting National Chairman on behalf of the Party in any appeal or application emanating from the appeal under reference.”

The petitions were dated January 21, 2025 and were addressed to the Chief Registrar, Supreme Court and The President/Presiding Justice, Court of Appeal.

Other signatories to the petitions were: National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN); National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba; National Financial Secretary Daniel Woyengikuro; National Women Leader Amina Bryhm; National Auditor Obi Okechukwu; National Vice Chairman (SE) Ali Odefa; National Vice Chairman (NE) Emmanuel Bovoa and National Vice Chairman (NW) Hayatu Gwarzo.

Top members of the PDP, notably supporters of former vice president Atiku Abubakar and those of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, have been locked in a battle for the soul of the party following the emergence of Atiku as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election.

With attention already shifting towards the 2027 polls, party members are actively positioning themselves to dictate who gets what in the party’s hierarchy.

Many loyalists of Atiku who see Damagum and Anyanwu as too close to Wike want them out of the way and have been pressurising the Acting National Chairman to call a meeting of the National Executive Council by next month.

There is nothing yet to show that the NEC meeting will take place next month.

Damagum and his supporters say a court order restraining the PDP from removing him from office until he serves out his term in December still subsists.

Party sources in Abuja told The Nation that the latest development is of strategic significance for both pro-Damagum and anti-Damagum forces in the NWC where a compromise of Anyanwu’s presence is seen as the easiest way to overwhelm Damagum and force him to call a meeting of the NEC – the only PDP organ that can ask him to vacate the chairmanship position.

One source said the NWC members kicking against the hiring of Dr. Musa believed he is close to Wike.

The sources said: “Are these people now saying that the Acting National Chairman cannot speak for the party as constitutionally authorised, especially when a matter directly involves him?”

The source drew attention to Section 35 of the PDP Constitution which authorises the National Chairman to “provide firm and effective leadership and direct the activities of the Party” and also to “promote and defend the integrity, policies and programmes of the Party” as well as “assigning specific functions to any member or officer of the party”.

However, the argument of the PDP National Legal Adviser and those sharing the same position with him is that the PDP Constitution gives him authority over all legal matters.

Specifically, Provision 42 of the PDP Constitution affirms that the National Legal Adviser shall “advise the Party on all legal matters,”

Also, Provision 42 (c) and (d) state that the National Legal Adviser shall “conduct all litigation and prosecute and defend actions on behalf of the Party, including its organs and officials in so far as the subject of the litigation affects the interest of the Party; and, (c) Interpret the laws, regulations and Constitution of the Party in the event of any ambiguities.

That is why we hasten to distance ourselves from the unguarded statements of one Abayomi Tella who was reported as casting aspersion on the state government and other public institutions over the incident and other security challenges.

It gave the ruling in a consolidated Fundamental Rights suit with suit number: FHC/ AI/CS/197/2024 between Herbert Onyedikachi Ovuta & 4 ORS. v. Chief Ali Odefa and 2 others and another, ,FHC/AI/CS/ 199/ 2024 between Sabastine Idenyi  &13 others v. Chief Ali & 2 others, the Presiding Judge,.

Odefa, the Commissioner of Police Ebonyi State and the Inspector General of Police were respondents.

Odefa was first suspended from the party by Ward executives of his Oguduokwor Ward in Onicha LGA on September 11, 2024.

The Abakaliki Division of the Federal High Court also upheld the initial suspension of Odefa by the ward executive of his ward.

Also, Mr Odefa wrote a petition to the police accusing the ward executive of forging party documents and impersonation.

Four members of the party were subsequently arrested, arraigned and remanded in prison custody in October last year over the matter.

But, consequent upon his earlier suspension, the Oguduokwor Ward Disciplinary Committee after hearing the allegations leveled against Odefa recommended the expulsion of the former Zonal Chairman of the party.

Subsequently, on December 12th 2024, the Executive of PDP Oguduokwor  Ward announced the summary expulsion of Odefa.

Stakeholders of the PDP in Ebonyi also wrote to the National Working Committee announcing the nomination of the Zonal Youth Leader of the party, Chidiebere Egwu to replace  Odefa as Zonal Vice Chairman of the party.

In the suit, the applicants, some of whom include those remanded last year, prayed the court for enforcement of their fundamental rights under Order Two of the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules 2009 and Sections 35 and 41 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) respectively

Odefa as earlier stated, had accused them of forging documents purporting his suspension as the National Vice Chairman of PDP, South East.

Lead counsel to the applicants, Mudiaga Ehrenede had in the suit filed in October last year sought seven reliefs from the Court among which was; a declaration that the threats, invitation, harassment and intimidation of the ward executives for suspending the former National Vice-Chairman (South East) were unconstitutional and a violation of their fundamental human rights.

The applicants had also prayed the Court to grant an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from threatening, arresting, inviting or intimidating the respondent/applicants for their roles in the suspension of the former National Vice-Chairman (South East) of the PDP for anti-party activities.

Proxy wars killing PDP, Damagum must stay till December 2025 – PDP NWC deputy officials insist

…call for unity amid internal rift

Elected deputies in the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have declared that the party’s acting national chairman, Ambassador Umar Ilyas Damagum, will remain in office until December 2025, despite internal opposition and ongoing proxy wars.

Speaking on behalf of other deputy officials during a press conference at the PDP headquarters, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, the party’s Deputy National Youth Leader, Mr. Timothy Osadolor, acknowledged the growing disillusionment among party members.

He urged aggrieved party leaders opposing Damagum’s leadership to consider exiting the party, while calling on loyal members to unite in rebuilding the PDP.

Osadolor emphasized the urgent need to restore trust and integrity within the party, citing issues of insincerity, broken agreements, and self-serving interests as key challenges.

He lamented that the ongoing internal conflicts were diverting attention from the party’s core objectives.

The press briefing was attended by other senior PDP officials, including Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi, Deputy National Financial Secretary Ndubisi Eneh, and Deputy National Organising Secretary Pascal Adigwe, all of whom endorsed the call for party unity and support for Damagum’s leadership.

“Worrisome is the action of members of the party who, under the guise of being  ‘due process advocates,’ act on behalf of self-serving leaders lurking behind the scenes mischievously, causing misunderstanding in the party; this behaviour is self-serving on their part, as it is not in the interest of the PDP in any way.

“It is ethically and morally wrong for members of the party to move around, creating confusion instead of exploring our internal mechanism for peace; while we await the verdict of the courts, the ongoing crisis in Edo, where the APC and INEC-chosen governor is going berserk with their actions and pronouncements needs attention.

“This is no longer the time for blame game, all have sinned – from the Board of Trustees Chairman who endorsed an opposition governor, to candidates that negotiated and supported other parties’ candidates – to NWC members and leaders that lost their polling units,” he added while emphasizing that too many party bigwigs can be easily accused of actively contributing to PDP’s sad situation.

Speaking further, he emphasized that while there is no saint within the party, the PDP NWC deputy officials firmly believe that the only pragmatic solution for the entire party is to rally round the acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Ilyas Damagum and ensure that he remains in office without distractions until his due exit in December 2025.

“We must all come down from our high horses, forget pride for now and join hands with the party as led by Amb Ilyas Damagun to reposition this party back to winning ways; court distractions and media de-marketing of the PDP must stop forthwith.

“You do not need to like the officers, but the party is more important; if you want to resign and go, be a proper part of the opposition, do not be here and going from television stations to radio house, abusing the party.

“The case of the acting national chairman is settled till December 2025, and on that of the National Secretary, we must wait for the courts to decide; let us learn to love and support PDP first and always.

“We the (PDP NWC) deputies are committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure that PDP regains its pride of place and finds herself back in Aso Rock for the benefit of Nigeria and all Nigerians.

“The current hardships of insecurity and poverty that Nigerians are facing serve as a reminder of what can happen when a party like PDP fails in doing the needful; the task ahead is to prepare for the next elections and not the present bickering which is distracting attention and misdirecting energies that could have been put to better use.

“From 2013 till date, personal ambitions have driven us to heights of pure mischief and arrogant use of power and this has led to agreements not being kept and the ambiguities in our constitution being exploited by those in position, even through the courts; we are all complicit by being perpetrators, supporters or silent onlookers; no one is coming to save us, we must stand up and become heroes, we brought ourselves here.

“Tomorrow beckons on us, we need to rise and surmount these challenges; as we await the outcome of the ongoing litigations, let us work towards the upcoming constitutionally-backed stakeholder engagements, embrace each other, and put plans in place to amend the ambiguities and loopholes in our Constitution.

“Our ambitions must be within the ambits of the law and must be pursued with sincerity and loyalty to the party, not the mischief and arrogance that we always display; we thank all our party members who are still keeping the flag and membership of this party across the 774 local governments of this country,” Timothy Osadolor stated.
