    Donu Kogbara on Peter Obi

Columnist Donu Kogbara last week delivered what is arguably one of the most memorable putdowns of the year on former Anambra governor and ex-Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi. Asked on Arise Television to react to the defection of some LP national lawmakers to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), she brushed the matter aside and instead launched into a tirade on Mr Obi. He was a ‘sparkling inspirational figure’, she said, ‘who created a movement almost overnight and galvansied the youths’, but is now ‘like a firework that became a damp squib’. Unable to conceal how bitterly disappointed she has been, she summed him up as ‘so pedestrian’.

Had she stopped at those searing words, she would have conveyed her message copiously enough, leaving nothing else to say, not even to the imagination. But she thundered on nevertheless: “He has become so pedestrian, making anodyne statements on TV. He is a good guy, but we can’t see a leader the opposition needs.” This was already and fully so dismissively characterising that she needed to say no more. But never one for half measures, she launched an extra, parting salvo: “I’m not an Obidient anymore, to be honest with you, because he’s such a disappointment. I mean there’s no aggression…” Well, Ms Kogbara’s verbs were vigorous enough and needed no further lexical help, but just to make sure that the cadaver stands no chance of any kind of resurrection, now or on the last day, she has had to dragoon some high-powered adjectives and fierce gestures during the interview to qualify the political specimen she once idolised.

Observe very well Ms Kogbara’s quaint use of words: damp squib; pedestrian; anodyne statements; no aggression; not a leader; and on and on – all memorable individual putdowns, each goose-stepping after the other. Yet, she was not scurrilous, and never intended to disparage. But her words drove home the utter disappointment she felt, having, among LP’s and Obi’s other teeming and unquestioning supporters, deified her champion and cast him as a David armed with nothing more than a sling to slay the detested and flatfooted APC Goliath. That she and many mesmerised LP supporters came to grief was more unbearable than the fitting electoral disaster their champion experienced. As she ruminated on and declaimed upon Mr Obi’s lack of competence and capacity, it was unclear how she still held on to the falsehood that he probably won the election. Indeed, how she thought someone who couldn’t master or manage the art of opposition could have been trusted to run a multi-ethnic, multireligious and politically complex society remains unfathomable.

But perhaps the biggest contradiction in what became a phonetic extravaganza between the interviewer and interviewee is her disinterestedness in interrogating the abject incompetence of LP followers in accurately gauging the capacity or even charisma of Mr Obi, their candidate and champion. They imbued him with some electric qualities when in fact right from the beginning there was no spark in him. It is remarkable that Ms Kogbara was only recently disillusioned only when it became obvious her champion could not muster the sense and composure to offer quality opposition to the APC. She failed to admit it in the interview, but what ailed everybody in the starry-eyed politics of the LP and its former presidential candidate was the lack of capacity of Mr Obi’s followers. They were impressionable, guileless peasants sheepishly dragged to the guillotine. They thought him ‘a sparkling, inspirational figure’, when in reality it was the platform of ethnicity and religion he rode on that sparkled. Mr Obi had always been himself, both as governor and as a political peregrinator. He has an engaging dullness about his politics, aided by his feline voice and chasmic lack of ideological depth. If they imbued him with something inspirational and deep, the problem was not that he disappointed them or that he suddenly lost those virtues; the problem is that his supporters endowed him with qualities they nurtured in their dreams and ambitions.

In any case, after the fateful 2023 presidential poll, and after it was no longer tenable for Mr Obi to take refuge in his electoral grief, it was time for him to settle into the humdrum of opposition politics. In January 2024, he appropriated the title of Nigeria’s chief opposition figure, but has since then failed woefully to don that onerous regalia, especially in the face of the APC’s many missteps, as Ms Kogbara ably identified. But to be a leading opposition figure, Mr Obi needed to ride on the steady platform of his party, the LP. Unfortunately for him, the party, a small electoral and political vehicle he gave the impression he did a favour to adopt for the race, was itself mired in turbulence and confusion. That turbulence was his first test to prove his mettle, assuming he had the capacity to see it. It took months for him to weigh in on the party’s many crises, and once he did, he showed a spectacular lack of capacity to even manage the smallest of crises. He ran with the hare and hunted with the hounds, and assailed by friends and foes alike, he constantly beat an ungainly and unmanly retreat.

Ms Kogbara may not have summed up her disappointment expertly, nor honestly admitted her culpability in being led by the nose despite her education and experience. But she gave a general impression of Mr Obi’s inadequacies and yawning lack of depth and charisma. As far as she is concerned, and notwithstanding the abuse of the Obidients or the pointless visit by Mr Obi himself to her residence days after she excoriated him, she is unlikely to return to the LP fold, a party for which, like her champion, she had never shown any affinity. For her, Mr Obi and LP are history. Had she been a politician, she would have, given the scale of her disappointment, toyed with defecting to the ruling party. But she is just one of those punctilious neutrals drawn to the embrace of an unworthy politician. She will lick her wounds quietly if Mr Obi will let her grieve privately.

Peter Obi backs Tinubu’s tax reforms, says ‘they are overdue’

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration over its proposed tax reform bills, describing the reforms as critical and long overdue.

President Tinubu’s Tax Reform Committee, headed by Taiwo Oyedele, has faced backlash in Northern Nigeria, with various groups calling for the passage of the bills.

Adding to the opposition, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum argued that the proposed tax reforms would benefit states like Lagos and Rivers, leaving others at a disadvantage if implemented.

However, a statement from the presidency explained that President Bola Tinubu proposed tax reforms to streamline Nigeria’s tax administration and create a more business-friendly environment.

In response to concerns raised by some stakeholders over the bills, President Tinubu ordered a comprehensive review to address the issues.

Meanwhile, legislators in the National Assembly have suspended action on the bills, calling on the executive arm to provide further clarifications and insights into the proposed reforms.

In a statement via X on Monday, Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State, stated that there is nothing wrong with pursuing the tax reform bills.

However, Peter Obi asserted that a public hearing on tax reform is essential for Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully.

According to Obi, the federal government must sensitize the masses and secure their buy-in for policy changes.

The statement reads: “Tax reform is a critical issue, and there is nothing wrong with pursuing it. However, such reform must be subject to robust and informed public debate. A public hearing on tax reform is essential, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully. This is how we build public trust and ensure inclusivity in policymaking.

“Matters of this magnitude require extensive deliberation and careful consideration—they should never be rushed. Public hearings must be conducted to allow for diverse opinions and inputs. Such public hearing would also enable the broadest spectrum of public opinion to be reflected in public policy.

“When considering tax reforms and similar issues, it is insufficient to focus solely on the benefits to the government, particularly in terms of increasing revenue collection. We must also take into account the overall impact on the nation and the sustainability of all its regions.

Furthermore, the government must sensitize the people and secure their buy-in for any policy changes. Trust and legitimacy are the foundation of effective governance, and without them, even the best-intended reforms may fail.

“Let us prioritize transparency, deliberation, and public engagement in charting the path forward. This is how we build a truly participatory democracy.”

Peter Obi’s stance on church vigils misconstrued – Media aide

The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has clarified his comments on converting church vigils into night shifts.

He stated that his message was misrepresented and blown out of proportion.

On the Honest Bunch podcast, Obi initially sparked controversy after suggesting that Nigeria’s excessive focus on religion, particularly church services from Monday to Friday, contributes to the country’s poverty and unproductivity.

Reacting via a statement issued by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, Obi emphasised that his intention was to highlight the importance of balancing faith with productivity, referencing Apostle James’ phrase, “Faith without Works is unhelpful”.

He explained that Jesus Christ selected disciples who were working, not praying, to illustrate his point.

Umar said, Obi’s goal is to promote a more balanced approach to faith and productivity, rather than criticising religious traditions.

He assured that Obi respects every religion and has enormous love for faith.

The statement partly reads: “Our attention has been drawn to a huge twist in his recent media interview, saying erroneously that he called for the dismantling of churches in Nigeria.

“By the headline given to the interview, the import of Obi’s message has been greatly overturned and grossly distorted to serve a mischievous end.

“The Labour Party leader is well known as a man of strong faith who has enormous respect and love for every religion and tried in the referenced interview to bring to Nigerians how religion can be more effective in their lives.

“Obi, in the interview, was merely underscoring what Apostle James said in ‘Faith without Works is unhelpful.’ When Obi said that he would turn night vigil into production night, he was only stressing the importance of worshipping God through work.

“Even Jesus Christ never picked any of his 12 disciples where they were praying but where they were working as fishermen and tax collectors, among others.

“What we are doing in Nigeria, which Obi’s interview is highlighting as wrong and should be discontinued, is exchanging work for prayer when the two should go together.

“There is no evidence in the scripture that Jesus blessed an idle person. The problem In some of Nigeria’s worship communities is that they are not following St James’ advisory that we should be doers of the words.”

I won’t leave my wife even if she cheats – Peter Obi

Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi has declared  unwavering commitment to wife, Margaret Brownson.

The former Anambra Governor, on the Honest Bunch Podcast, spoke passionately about the depth of their bond, describing it as an unbreakable resolve that goes beyond vows.

Obi emphasised that his love and dedication to Margaret would never falter, regardless of any circumstances.

He calmly stated that nothing, not even infidelity or being shot, could shake his commitment to stand by her side for life.

Obi said: “No matter what my wife does today. I can’t separate from her. I can never. Even if she like let her shoot me, as long as I am alive, she’s my wife

“No matter what she does, I won’t marry [someone else]. She’s my wife. Whatever she likes, let her do because what is she going to do that would offend me? What? Maybe have an extramarital affair? It’s her business. It’s not me. They won’t say two of us have an affair. They would say Peter Obi is a very good man who married a woman who is [promiscuous]. That is it!

“You can’t quantify me with the life of my wife or children. No. We have different lifestyles. Even if I’m traveling with my wife, people have seen it. Sometimes we are in the same plane but in different classes. She is in business class and I’m in economy. Because that suits her and it doesn’t conflict with my interests.”

Peter Obi and Margaret have been married for over 30 years.

Edo poll: Peter Obi is a serial complainer – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, as a serial complainer.

Felix Morka, the national publicity secretary for the APC, claimed that Obi routinely rejects the results of every election in which he or his candidates do not fare well.

This happened after Obi commented on the results of the Edo State gubernatorial election, which named All Progressives Congress candidate Monday Okpebholo the victor.

Morka said this in an interview with Arise TV on Wednesday.

“Peter Obi is a serial complainer who will not accept the result of any election that is not in his favour or candidates that he supports.

“Since the 2023 election, Obi has been in consistent denial of that election. He has a new pet project which is to deny the Edo State election. Whatever he thinks of the Edo election is completely irrelevant.

“I think Akpata and Ighodalo have a legitimate interest in that election and if they are not satisfied, they should do what they must do which is to head to court and prove the allegations that they are handling around now. They are spreading unsubstantiated allegations.

“I have not listened to any of them finishing any evidence of the high-sounding allegations that they make. When you get to court, it’s not about the headlines; you must break it down to realistic evidence to support your argument of winning the elections,” he stated.

Following the announcement of the Edo election results, Peter Obi denounced the procedure, referring to it as a “blatant example of state capture” that goes against Nigeria’s democratic values.

Ondo polls: Peter Obi abandoned us after election, say former candidates

Former House of Representatives candidates of the Labour Party in Ondo state have accused Peter Obi and other leaders of the party of abandoning them after the loss of the 2023 presidential election.

The candidates said they were left to their fates.

They said they contested on the platform of the LP because they thought it was a party of hope for Nigerians.

A former House of Representatives candidate for Irele federal constituency, Oluwadare Timothy, who spoke in Akure said that the party has no chance of winning the November 16th governorship election.

Oluwadare, who was among chieftains of the party that defected to the APC, said ‘A party that does not have a candidate does not have a chance at the polls.’

Oluwadare said they campaigned and worked for the LP but that what happened during and after the elections showed the LP was the ‘same old story.’

He said: “Many of us that contested the election were abandoned. We were left to our fate. That is not a trend that can last long. We believe we cannot be onlookers in this governorship election.

“You can see that there is no definite candidate in the Ondo Labour Party. Two persons are laying claim to the ticket. We cannot afford to be onlookers at such a critical time in the history of our state. We believe in the leadership of Aiyedatiwa. We believe he will lift the state to greater heights. That is why we have come to join him in the state. We are going home to work on our people.”

I never agreed to be VP to anyone in 2027 – Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has denied saying he has agreed a deal to become a vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 elections.

Obi made the clarifications on X on Saturday while reacting to reactions that trailed a recent interview on News Central TV.

He stated that contrary to reports, he remains committed to the Labour Party and anyone looking for a collaboration must state their true intentions.

The former Anambra Governor also said he is not desperate to become President but determined to see Nigeria work.

He wrote: “I have been inundated with calls and concerns regarding the interview I granted to News Central TV.

“In that interview, I took the opportunity it provided to explain my position in detail. However, some fifth columnists have resorted to propaganda, deliberately distorting the narrative.

“Let me reiterate clearly what I said, which is on record.

“I do not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges.

“When I was asked about collaboration, I explicitly stated my openness to working with others, provided their intentions were not centred on state capture. I emphasized my commitment to partnering with those who share my vision for advancing Nigeria’s progress.

“I also made it clear that I remain committed to the Labour Party, and if anyone wishes to negotiate or join forces, they must disclose their true intentions.

“As I have always maintained, I am not desperate to become president, but I am determined to see Nigeria work.

“Likewise, I am not desperate for any position at all as I believe I can make contributions as I am already doing without occupying any. When 2027 arrives, if I decide to run for any office, it will not be with those whose sole aim is state capture or merely winning an election. I want them to explain how we will ensure that no child is left behind and how we will bring millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms, ensure healthy living and pull people out of poverty.

“My statement was unequivocal, and I am genuinely surprised by the misrepresentation of my words.

“For the avoidance of doubts, I never stated at any time that I would be vice president to anyone and it’s unequivocal.

“I have consistently maintained that I am open to working with those committed to building a new Nigeria.

“My commitment to Nigeria remains steadfast, and I even believe it is possible to contribute to its progress without occupying any office as I am already doing.”

Val Obienyem, the media adviser to Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, stated that the Department of State Services (DSS) did not arrest his principal.

There have been unconfirmed reports that the former Anambra State governor was arrested alongside his wife, Margaret.

However, in a statement on Tuesday, Obienyem dismissed the report, describing it as false and baseless.

He said that the rumour first surfaced on Saturday, but was promptly refuted, adding that despite this, the false narrative has continued to spread.

Obienyem who said Obi was not in Anambra State at the time of the alleged incident, also refuted the claim that Mr. Obi’s wife was arrested, describing it as a fabrication aimed at misleading the public and causing unnecessary panic among his supporters.

He said: “As of Saturday, Mr. Obi was in Rwanda attending to important engagements.
