Tinubu improving security, don’t politicise it, Omokri tells Peter Obi

A former presidential aide, Mr Reno Omokri, has cautioned a former governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi, not to politicise the security situation in the country, saying there has been tremendous improvement under President Bola Tinubu’s watch.

Omokri, former President Goodluck Jonathan’s special assistant on social media, said the Global Terrorism Index showed that the country’s insecurity was being tamed and that Obi should take a more positive approach to his assessment of the situation.

The former governor had taken to his X handle on Saturday to call for war on the economy, power and insecurity, contending that the situation in the sectors was intolerable.

Obi, who was also the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, cited the kidnap of 20 medical and dental students on their way to Enugu in Oturpo, Benue State as evidence that the Tinubu administration was not ebbing insecurity.

In a statement yesterday, Omokri countered Obi and said the evidence on the ground proved the former governor wrong. He said the 2024 Global Terrorism Index showed that Nigeria under Tinubu had improved by five basis points, moving from the third most insecure country under former President Muhammadu Buhari to eight.

He said, “According to the Global Terrorism Index, Nigeria was the third most insecure country in the world. Today, we have improved, and according to the 2024 Global Terrorism Index published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, Nigeria is now the eighth most terrorised nation. We have improved by five places.”

According to him, the quantum leap in the security situation was due to Tinubu’s recalibration of the nation’s security architecture through the able leadership provided by his National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

Omokri said despite occasional attacks on soft targets, the banditry in the Northwest and the insurgency in the Northeast had reduced because the security forces had systematically decimated the ranks of the non-state actors.

“The seven deadliest bandits in Nigeria have been killed under the dispensation of Mallam Ribadu as NSA, including Ali Kachala, Boderi Isyaku, Sani Dangote, Modi, and Nagala,” the former presidential aide said.

He asked the former governor to note that improved security in the country had already started bearing fruits, pointing at the drop in high food prices due to protection the military is giving farmers in the Northeast and Northwest.

He said the Niger Delta, which used to be restive, was now at peace, helping Nigeria’s oil production attain 1.7 million barrels per day last week.

Omokri told Obi, “In the Southeast, in the last year of General Buhari’s presidency, forty-eight police stations were sacked by Unknown Gunmen suspected of being Indigenous People of Biafra members. Today, all of those forty-eight stations are open and functioning.

“Bandits attacked the Abuja-Kaduna trains under Buhari. This has been brought to an end. Under Buhari, bandits attacked Kuje Prison, the Brigade of Guards and the Nigerian Defence Academy. Is that happening today? Of course not.”

Accusing Obi of hypocrisy and politicising the security situation in the country, Omokri said the former governor refused to acknowledge that the situation in the Southeast had improved far more than when he held sway as Anambra State governor.

He stated, “While you were Governor of Anambra State, Anambra was more insecure than it is today, and Nigeria itself was, according to the Global Terror Index, more insecure than it is today, yet you never called for a war on terror. Why? Because you were not contesting to be President. You are just taking advantage of the situation to further your political ambition.

“Under you, Anambra had known armed non-state actors, such as the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Bakassi Boys, and the Indigenous People of Biafra. What did you do about them? You did not do anything substantial.”

He accused the former governor of turning a blind eye to gunmen’s nefarious activities in the Southeast and going overboard when there were incidents in other parts of the country.

According to Omokri, “Two weeks ago, Unknown Gunmen killed four police officers in Imo. You, Peter Obi, did not condemn that incident till today. The next day, IPOB claimed responsibility for the killing, but you, Peter Obi, still did not condemn the killing or IPOB.

“Then, Unknown Gunmen killed seven traditional rulers in Imo five days later, and you, Peter Obi, still have not condemned it. Next, Unknown Gunmen murdered five people in Anambra. And again, you, Peter Obi, still said nothing. You ignored all these deaths till today. Total radio silence!

“But yesterday, a commissioner from Anambra was abducted in Edo state, and you IMMEDIATELY shouted.”

Obi visits Okoye brothers amidst family fallout

Former presidential candidate and Labour Party flag bearer, Peter Obi, has met with the renowned music duo P-Square’s family.

Peter Okoye, also known as Mr. P, publicly criticised his twin brother Paul Okoye on Monday amid an ongoing dispute between them.

Paul, who is known as Rudeboy, recently claimed in an interview that Peter filed a petition with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) seeking his arrest.

In response, Peter issued an open letter denying the allegations and raising concerns about a secret company, Northside Music, which he claims is purportedly owned by their brother Jude Okoye and his wife Ifeoma.

He also expressed gratitude for the visit.

  • Onoh to Peter Obi: Tinubu already addressing protesters’ demands

Onoh to Peter Obi: Tinubu already addressing protesters’ demands

President Bola Tinubu’s former spokesman in the south east, Denge. Dr. Josef Onoh, has responded to Mr Peter Obi who said that the address to the nation made by the President on Sunday, failed to address critical issues that initially triggered the nationwide protests.

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Obi, in his reaction to the President’s nation address, said Tinubu failed to address the critical issues that brought about the protests but focused on past discussions.

But Onoh in responding to Obi’s claims stated that the President cannot address already addressed demands, maintaining that demands such as food security, wage increase, among others were addressed by Tinubu and asked Obi to go and verify his claims.

According to Onoh, the protesters in their new demands are seeking for scrapping of the 1999 constitution and its replacement with a people-made constitution.

According to him: “And I ask, if the constitution is scrapped, what would Nigeria be governed with? These protesters demand is a call for an interim government, and possibly military rule. Once the constitution is suspended, Tinubu ceases to be president because his powers as president are legitimized by the constitution.”

Onoh recalled that the Senate on 14th Feb 2024 constituted a 45-member committee to review and amend Nigeria’s Constitution, with members of the amendment committee drawn from all states, geo-political zones, political parties with representation in the Senate, and asked that the protesters should make submissions to their respective Senators.

Onoh said: “There is nowhere in our constitution that gives President Tinubu or anyone the powers to scrap a part of any arm of government. This demand calls for military rule. The other demand to make legislative work part-time would require a constitutional amendment which I already said they can engage their various Senators that are members of the constitution amendment committee as President Tinubu does not have the constitutional powers to make that amendment by fiat.

“The minimum wage demand has been addressed by the president. When the two major Labour unions, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) came to a compromise pegging the new minimum wage at N70,000. The president’s approval followed wide consultative meetings with governors, the organised private sector, and the labour bureaucrats.

“Tinubu promised to ensure that wages would be reviewed every three years, rather than the once in five-year-old order. Clearly, this demand by the protesters has been addressed by the president. Those who work in the public sector enjoy a lot of allowances, and lucrative training abroad and travelling excluding their basic salary. Some government agencies pay various training allowances to their staff beyond their basic salary. The president cannot be responsible for paying states’ civil servants.

“To invest heavily in education and give students grants, not loans and compulsory education across Nigeria, currently Some public universities institute scholarships for exemplary students, Some universities take over the fees of students especially first class students and also offer automatic employment. Federal government agencies like TETFUND, NDDC and PTDF have consistently funded students within and outside Nigeria.

“The protesters may not know that agencies like UBEC have been tackling the issue of compulsory education, but even after FG releases money, some states fail to pay their counterpart funding. It’s up to each state now to decide how to deal with the problem of free and compulsory education on their own.

“On the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, demilitarization of the southeast and release and compensation of EndSARS protesters; Although this demand has no relationship with the hunger protest, I wish to draw the attention of the protesters that Nnamdi Kanu’s case is in court, and on July 2024 Senators from the south-east geopolitical region prior to the protest held a closed-door meeting with Lateef Fagbemi, attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice, over the release of Nnamdi Kanu. While governors from the south-east region resolved to meet President Bola Tinubu over the release of Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“Led by Enyinnaya Abaribe, senator representing Abia south senatorial district, the Senators handed a letter  to Fagbemi for onward transmission to “the presidency”. Earlier, about 50 members of the House of Representatives from various parts of the country, urged President Tinubu to free Nnamdi Kanu. Clearly this demand by the protesters has already been overtaken by events even before the protest.

“As for demilitarization of the southeast, I wish to draw the attention of the protesters that The South-East Governors Forum had since August 2023 resolved to deal decisively with perpetrators and sponsors of insecurity in the region individually and collectively in a declaration and communiqué issued at the end of its first meeting in Enugu. It’s important to note that the forum firmly resolved to fight insecurity decisively in the region in partnership with the Federal Government and other stakeholders.

“The Governor added that the forum resolved to hold a security and economic summit on a date to be announced. They commended the security agencies for their cooperation so far and encouraged them not to relent. It’s clear this demand should be presented to the south east Governors and not the Federal government.

“As for unconditional release and compensation for all EndSARS protesters, are the protesters aware that some of those who claimed to be EndSARS protesters looted, destroyed, burnt public properties and businesses?. Unfortunately this demand is beyond the president as major promoters of the endsars already instituted legal action against the Federal government before the Community  Court of Justice, ECOWAS.

“Renationalise public enterprises sold to government officials and cronies: The protesters failed to list the specific public enterprises and the government officials who purchased them.  Even if the assets were sold corruptly, it cannot be retrieved by presidential fiat. There is a legal process that can drag for many years. Only a military dictatorship or an autocrat can reverse such. Hence this demand is clearly not within reason and can’t be addressed by the president beyond this.

“Reinitiation of a corrupt-free subsidy regime to reduce hunger, starvation and multidimensional poverty: Despite the Federal government’s subsidy intervention, Nigerians and some elected state officials have abused subsidy regime as was clearly seen recently when the bags of rice that were donated by the Federal government were hidden in a warehouse and rebagged for sale despite how paltry, It’s important that the protesters take this demand to their elected  state officials.

“Also The Management of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) successfully disbursed N20, 000.00 monthly stipends for the month of July to 20,371 students from six tertiary institutions.  This initiative further underscores H.E. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promised unwavering commitment to supporting Nigerian students by ensuring financial stability throughout their academic pursuit.

“Probing the past and present Nigerian leaders who looted the treasury, recovering the loot and putting the funds in a special account to fund education, healthcare and infrastructure: This demand has already been addressed and measures being taken as early as January 2024 when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission reopened money laundering cases against 13 former governors and some  former and present ministers, including serving civil servants with the amounts involved running into over N853.8bn. While the agency, together with other relevant agencies, are working on modalities to block loopholes so that no one can loot again?

“Restructuring Nigeria to accommodate diversity, resource control decentralization and regional autonomy: This demand has far been dealt with by previous governments with NDDC and President Bola Tinubu has signed into law bills to accelerate development across geo-political zones in the country.

“The President assented to the North-West Development Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2024, and the South-East Development Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2023. Restructuring Nigeria will require a constitutional amendment and Tinubu cannot do it by fiat. Hence the protesters can make their submissions to the Senate committee representative on constitution amendment.

“End banditry and terrorism and violent crimes: This  demand is with the limits of the President  and so far President Bola Tinubu has engaged Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS to work towards the establishment and sustenance of a regional standby force for the security and economic advancement of the community. During the opening of the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government in Abuja, he had highlighted the expediency of a standby force in the face of growing security threats.

“The Regional Action Plan against Terrorism has enhanced cooperation on training, intelligence sharing, and humanitarian interventions. In addition to this, the Ministers of Finance and Defence met recently in Abuja to raise funds for activating the ECOWAS Standby Force to boost counter-terrorism efforts. Member countries are also displaying their commitment to combating insecurity by individually increasing their defence budgets in order to acquire necessary equipment and ensure preparedness. Clearly the president has addressed the issue prior to the protest.

“Establishing a special energy fund to drive investments in the power sector: This demand has been addressed by the previous administration when former President Buhari signed a bill into law to allow states to generate their own electricity. Nigeria also secured an Energy Development Bank for Africa with proposed headquarters in Abuja recently to identify and develop Africa’s energy sources. With Abia state leading the way, Lagos, Kano, and 10 other states have concluded plans to start generating power in their respective states in conformity with the Electricity Act 2023. Some of these states had established their electricity market laws and were waiting for the approval of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to have independent regulatory bodies different from the NERC owned by the Federal Government; this will clearly create a competitive market and tariff variations.

“Reconstitution of Nigeria’s electoral body to remove corrupt individuals and partisan appointees: This demand is baseless and can’t be addressed by the president or electoral amendments as it’s a demand floating on unverified criminal allegations, and accusation of the INEC chairman being bribed and thereby compromising the election. No evidence has ever been shown of how much he was given? How much money was he paid and in which bank account was it deposited? There’s a need for our protesters to make demands that are not motivated by unverified accusations all in the name of Urge to protest.

“Massive investment in public works and industrialization to employ Nigerians: Many among the youth and protesters publicly opposed the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway the present administration embarked upon and sided with Landmark leisure centre despite his properties not adversely affected. I urge our protesters to take time and reflect on their demands. We must all agree on what we want as a people, not everything is achieved by protests.

“Massive shake up in the Nigerian judiciary to remove cabals of corrupt generation of judges:

This clearly isn’t a demand but a distraction hence the president isn’t expected to deal with distraction. Historically, the Nigerian Judicial Commission has disciplined many judges implicated for corruption. An example was of a judge hearing an election petitions case and receiving a donation for his father’s funeral from the defendant’s lawyer, who was a SAN. They dismissed the judge and had the lawyer derobed of his SAN. Many judges have had their promotion stunted and dismissed. Because of the way the judiciary is, these things are not always in the press. Hence the President isn’t expected to address an addressed demand.

“Disapora voting: This is subject to electoral act amendment and not by Presidential fiat hence it’s not an economic demand nor a demand that can be addressed by the president rather it’s a demand for the national assembly.

“Revert petrol pump price to N100/litre: This demand is outside reason and even the protesters know it’s not achievable. Because To get oil from the ground, there needs to be exploration (usually seismic studies) which are very expensive, and if it is offshore, even worse because to keep a seismic vessel on the sea which also costs a lot then to get 1 litre of fuel into your car, there are costs: (1) exploration cost, (2) production cost, (3) refining cost, and (4) landing cost. If you put in these costs, it would be suicidal to sell petrol at one hundred naira. The current administration is already working on fixing all the country’s refineries and to rejig the power sector as part of measures to recover and turn around the nation’s ailing economy.

“Finally, it’s clear President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had addressed the protesters’ demands even before they were made. I urge all protesters to give way to dialogue, President Tinubu isn’t our problem, rather we are our own problem because we have failed to ask the right questions. If your Excellency doubts my submission, please go and verify!

“And to Mr President, you are our President, listen to the people, deep in our hearts we know you are doing your best but we need you to do more. Your nation needs you and it’s the most important time in our history to renew hope. Your cabinet is heavily compromised, don’t wait till the agitations of the masses force you to reshuffle your cabinet, the time is now.”

Obi urges southeast governors to collaborate on tackling regional security challenges

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi has admonished governors of the south-east to collaborate to solve the security challenge of the region.

In a statement by the spokesperson, Peter Obi Media Reach, Yunusa Tanko, the former governor of Anambra state, expressed his desire for all regions to work collectively for the progress of their respective areas, thereby contributing to the overall development of Nigeria.

Obi said: “In the case of the South-East, the problems, like elsewhere, are many. However, security is the most pressing issue. I again urge the Governors to work as a family, especially now towards solving this problem, because working in isolation will achieve less and consume more resources.”

Obi noted that it was the time for the governors to collaborate among themselves, working towards becoming collective champions.

He suggested they engage with one another and even seek insights from former governors to share experiences.

He noted that this approach was more effective than “striving to be individual champions and failing in such selfish pursuits.”

It will be recalled that Obi expressed similar sentiments while speaking to journalists in Onitsha on Saturday, where he stated: “I thank the government for their efforts so far, but there is a need to do more. All leaders must come together to join hands and fight this. In the South-East, the governors need to unite to tackle these challenges effectively.

“Even in economic matters, I want to see the south-east governors work more closely. We need them to come together and also engage other groups in the zone for comprehensive development.”

FG replies Peter Obi, denies running four budgets in a year

    • Says ex Anambra gov jumped on false claims by BudgIT

The Federal Government has debunked claims that it is running four budgets in a fiscal year.

This was stated in a post on X by Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Media and Publicity, Mr. Temitope Ajayi.

The media aide responded to a thread of tweets by former Anambra Governor, Peter Obi, alleging the government was running four budgets concurrently.

Ajayi wrote: “Yesterday, @BudgITng raised a false alarm on the basis of rumours that FG is planning a 2024 supplementary budget. It is important to state that the FG is not planning to run 4 budgets within a fiscal year as being alleged.

“The National Assembly only approved that implementation of the capital components of 2023 budget and 2023 supplementary should be extended to December 2024 to achieve its objectives.

“Our country can’t achieve sustainable development when Federal, States and Local governments focus on only consumptive expenditures which is essentially what recurrent expenditures represent.

“It is the capital expenditures that drive economic growth, strengthen private sector output and create employment opportunities for citizens.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, yesterday described the approval given by the National Assembly to the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to implement four national budgets concurrently as a recipe for chaos and frivolity.

Obi said this in a series of tweets on his X handle.

The tweets read:  “It is also a recipe for chaos, confusion, and catastrophe.

“This intentionally reckless action will lead to frivolous items in the approved budgets competing with essential projects for limited resources, further exacerbating the suffering of the Nigerian people.

“It indicates that the leaders are out of touch with reality and lack the competence to manage our nation’s finances effectively.

“Unfortunately, this deliberate act of fiscal recklessness is being undertaken by elected representatives of the people, thereby betraying one of the cardinal pillars of democracy. Leaders are elected to responsibly manage public resources in an organized way.

“I respectfully appeal and in fact, demand that this situation be reversed immediately in preference for a more responsible and transparent approach to budgeting.

“We must prioritize the needs of the Nigerian people, not the selfish interests of a few.

“This is a call to action for all Leaders to desist from actions that will further drive the country into economic chaos.

“Neither the National Assembly nor the executive has any excuse to promote or condone such unconscionable behaviour.

“We seek and insist on a nation governed by leaders who are frugal and responsible in their handling of public resources.

“This is the only way we can build a great nation.”

Middle-Belt Coalition to Obi: accept 2023 clection outcome now

…says it’s time to move on, results reflect Nigerians’ wishes

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations under the auspices of Middle-Belt Pan Nigerian Forum has urged the former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to respect the outcome of the 2023 general elections and move on.

In a statement issued by Dr. Danladi Ceceko, the group’s spokesperson, the coalition asserted that the results of the election won by President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), reflected the wishes of the Nigerian people.

Ceceko said.: “It is evident for all to see that the 2023 general elections, especially the presidential poll, were among the freest and most transparent in our history.

“The outcome, upheld by the Supreme Court, is a true representation of the will of Nigerians, and it is time for all participants to accept the results and move forward.”

The coalition expressed disappointment with Obi’s critique of the electoral process, accusing him of undermining the country’s institutions, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Supreme Court.

“It is quite unfortunate that Mr. Peter Obi would discredit our institutions like INEC and the Supreme Court, which validated the credible elections conducted by INEC,” the spokesman said.

Ceceko noted that if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were as problematic as some politicians claim, it raises the question of why there are calls to disband the State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) and have INEC conduct local government elections instead.

He said: “According to these advocates, local government elections run by SIECs are often plagued by irregularities and manipulation.

“It is evident that the political elite who frequently malign the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are often the same ones who oversee the worst elections in the country through the State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs).”

The coalition also challenged Obi’s comparison of the Nigerian electoral process to that of South Africa, noting that the South African elections were not without their own challenges and technical glitches, including 579 petitions with 20 political parties rejecting the result as widely reported by international media outlets.

“We really need Mr. Peter Obi to do his due diligence and research before comparing INEC to other countries’ electoral bodies,” Dr. Ceceko said. “The South African election also experienced technical glitches, which were well-documented.”

The coalition urged Nigerians to respect their institutions and work together to improve the electoral process, rather than disparaging them.

“It is hypocritical of Mr. Peter Obi to claim that the election which brought Governor Alex Otti of Abia was credible and transparent, while asserting that the election he lost was marred by irregularities. It is worth noting that both elections were conducted by the same INEC under the leadership of Prof. Mahmud Yakubu.

“Furthermore, it is important to remind Mr. Peter Obi that he is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, beneficiaries of the very institutions he is currently maligning. It was the same Supreme Court that restored his allegedly stolen mandate in 2003. Additionally, it was the same INEC that conducted the election that secured his second term victory in Anambra.

The coalition argued that technical glitches during electoral processes are normal occurrences worldwide, and that such issues do not necessarily invalidate the outcome as a reflection of the will of the people.

“Because there was a technical glitch on the portal of the South African commission, does that invalidate the outcome of the election in which the ruling ANC won?” the spokesperson questioned.

“I think it is about time we start respecting our institutions and join hands with other Nigerians to make them work and even better”, the statement concluded.

I’m not leaving Labour Party, says Peter Obi

The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has said he is not leaving the party.

He said this in a statement on Wednesday to clarify his comments on the directorate of ObIdients movement created by the national chairman of the party, Julius Abure.

The former Anambra state governor in a series of posts on his X.com handle on Thursday said his position on the Obidient Movement was to clarify issues that are of concern to his supporters.

He said: “For the avoidance of doubt, ‘I remain a committed, Loyal Labour Party member’. That is my definitive response to all Nigerians who may be in doubt about my party affiliation in the light of recent reports and conflicting interpretations of recent political expressions.

“I have just been confronted by a Journalist at Abuja airport wanting to know if my statement on Obidient Movement yesterday is a signal of my leaving the Labour Party. For the attention of all those holding such an impression and for the general public, I remain a faithful, committed and loyal member of the Labour Party.

“Indeed as a Leader of the party, my aspiration, and desire working closely with other Leaders is to reconcile our valued members, and partner with like minds, and parties all over the country to build a strong and better Party that will catalyse and commence the rebuilding of a new Nigeria.

“My statement yesterday was intended to clarify some issues that are of concern to our teeming supporters some of whom are not members of any political party but are desirous for a new Nigeria. Our goal and aspirations remain that a new Nigeria is POssible.”

Obi had in his Wednesday’s night statement boasted that his ‘Obidient’ movement is far more than any political party in the country.

According to Obi, anyone claiming to be at the helm of affairs of what he described as a “non-existent directorate” is not a member of the ‘Obidient’ movement.

He said the movement was more than a mere political party void of ethnic and religious affiliations.

The comment by the former governor of Anambra state generated controversy on social media, forcing him to clarify that he remained a “faithful, committed, and loyal member of the Labour Party.”

Obi had said: “I like to categorically state that the Obidient Movement is not a directorate of any particular political party. Any individual or individuals claiming to be leaders of this non-existent directorate are simply not members of the broader Obidient Movement. There may be a youth mobilisation directorate in political parties but the Obidient movement is far beyond a particular political party. The Obidient Movement is a diverse and inclusive collective that transcends traditional political, religious, and ethnic affiliations.

“It is not domiciled within any particular party or headquartered in any particular part of the country. Its membership spans across Africa and the globe, comprising individuals from various backgrounds, including rural communities, and public, private, and corporate entities, united by a shared vision for a New and better Nigeria. Guided by the principles of adaptive and transformative change, progress, discipline, and democratic values, the Obidient Movement advocates for fairness, equity, inclusivity, and justice.”

  • Anambra and lingering injustice in return of schools

Anambra and lingering injustice in return of schools

Sir: Peter Obi’s return of schools to their rightful and original owners in 2011, may have been commendable, he nonetheless erred in that handover by bypassing private school proprietors, who were victims of the seizure of schools by Ukpabi Asika in 1970.

Among the people, who established schools in the Eastern Region (part of which is today’s Anambra State) were Chief M.C Awgu, founder of New Bethel College, Onitsha and Basden College, Isulo; Chief Belonwu, founder and proprietor of Holy Cross College, Umuawulu; Sir P. E Chukwurah, founder of Our Lady’s High School, Onitsha; H.R. H Igwe M.A Onwuzu, founder and proprietor of Eastern Academy, Onitsha; Chief E. I Oli, founder and sole proprietor of Merchants of Light School, Oba; Chief E.S.N Mbakwe and Chief T. Morah, co-founders and proprietors of Notre Dame High School, Abatete; Chief B.C Nduka, founder and proprietor of Okija Grammar School; and countless others.

The proprietors of those private schools lost the ownership in 1970 when the government of Ukpabi Asika took possession of them. Against the background that the Nigeria-Biafra civil war had just ended, and given the fact that it would be foolhardy to take on government on the matter, the schools’ proprietors kept their cool and let sleeping dogs lie.

Between 1970 and 2011, when Peter Obi ordered the return of seized schools to their original owners, Anambra school system had suffered colossal damage. The schools were no longer centres of academic excellence. And most of the schools were beset with moral crisis what with teachers and parents aiding and abetting examination malpractice among the students during such examinations as SSCE and NECO. And the quality of education, which students in those schools received, was abysmally poor.

Then, as part of his efforts and plan to reposition schools in Anambra State, and redress the wrong, which was done in 1970 by the Ukpabi Asika led-government, Peter Obi as the Anambra State governor in 2011 returned 1040 schools to their rightful and original owners – the churches.

The schools, which were returned to the Anglican and Catholic churches, were given the princely sum of N6 billion for their maintenance. Willie Obiano, who succeeded Peter Obi as governor of Anambra State, doled out N4 billion to the schools, which were returned to the churches. And the current governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, is known to have given financial largesse to those schools to ensure that their culture of academic excellence and tempo of growth are sustained.

But there is a lacuna in this matter. Almost all the private schools founded by Anambra natives which were appropriated by the East Central State government in 1970, are still in the possession of the Anambra State government. And, to make matters worse, compensations were not paid to those private schools’ proprietors.

So is the Anambra state government’s continued ownership of those schools not a clear case of daylight theft? As what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, Anambra State government should handle the lingering matter of seized private schools in the same way it handled the matter of seized mission schools. The principle of fairness or equity demands that compensations should be paid to those whose schools were unjustifiably taken by the government.

More so, it is saddening to note that many of the founders and proprietors of the seized private schools took ill and died because they were heartbroken by the government’s rash, insensitive, and injudicious action, then. Today, the children of the deceased private school proprietors cannot reclaim their parents’ properties owing to the Anambra State government’s hard line position on the matter. The government’s disposition to the matter is not harmonious with the tenets of democracy.

So I urge the Anambra State government to do the needful in this lingering and vexed matter.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in last year’s general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has criticised the Federal Government for allocating N1 billion for the construction of hostels in 12 tertiary institutions.

He described the government’s action as financial recklessness and misplacement of priorities in the allocation of funds.

In a statement by the spokesman of Peter Obi Media Reach, Yunusa Tanko, the LP stalwart described as unacceptable the continued deployment of public resources to nonessential areas of development.

He highlighted what he called the poor and embarrassing position of Nigeria in the global average in school enrollment.

Obi alleged that despite the poor standing, the government was “budgeting a paltry N1 billion for the construction of hostels in 12 tertiary institutions in Nigeria while N10 billion is going for the building of car parks and recreational facilities”.

In a post on his X (formerly twitter) handle, the former Anambra State governor said: “As the giant of Africa, which we are, I remain concerned about our fiscal indiscipline as a nation.

“Imagine the situation in our Education sector where the global average of secondary school enrollment is above 80 per cent, while Nigeria is 28 per cent.

“The global Average of Tertiary School enrollment is above 55 per cent, while Nigeria is less than 15 per cent.

“Yet, our budget for the National Assembly Car Parks is N6 billion. The budget for the National Assembly Recreational Facilities is N4 billion.

“Approved for the Construction of Hostels in 12 tertiary institutions is just N1 billion. It is time for us to stop this financial indiscipline and embrace financial discipline by prioritising the allocation of resources to the critical areas of human and national development.”

But an aide to the President on Information, who craved anonymity, said the former Anambra State governor got his facts wrong.

He said the government planned to spend N12 billion (N1 billion each) as special intervention for the provision of hostels in the selected higher institutions.

The aide said: “Playing an opposition goes beyond dancing to the gallery. How can someone who aspired to be president be amplifying and elevating falsehoods. It is not compulsory that he must comment on every policy, especially on the one he has little or no knowledge about.”
