He also urged leaders of the country to ensure that the welfare of the armed forces and their families are well taken care of.

“Today, we encourage them to remain resolute in their resolve to conquer the ugly monster of insecurity currently ravaging our dear nation.

“We remember especially our fallen heroes who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while defending the peace, unity and territorial integrity of our dear nation. We appreciate and honour them for their heroic deeds, while showing love and support to their bereaved families. Great nations are built by rulers, citizens and the protectors of freedom – the military.

“Our story as a nation, therefore, will not be complete, without their courageous sacrifices which takes them away from the comfort of their homes and the embrace of their loved ones.

“With the country going through very challenging times in its war against terrorism, violence, crime and all manner of insecurity, we show our support and solidarity to our military men, and urge them not to be despirited, even when they feel overstretched by the war.

“May this day renew their love, zeal, and courage to remain firm in their struggles for a peaceful and crime-free Nigeria. May we the leaders, ensure that the welfare of our armed forces and their families, are well taken care of, as they graciously serve our nation.”

Why FG must cut down cost of governance, by Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate has urged the federal government to reduce the cost of governance by 60 percent, adding that cutting travel expenditure is not enough.

Obi said this in a statement via his official X page on Wednesday.

He made this observation following a 60 percent reduction in the number of individuals on entourages for both domestic and foreign trips.

According to Ajuri Ngelale, presidential spokesperson, the move was part of cost cutting measures of the presidency.

The measure will affect the office of the president, vice-president, first lady, ministers and heads of agencies.

But because it will only result in a little savings, Obi claimed the move “is just scratching the surface.”

He also said the 2024 budget needs to be revised to cut all wasteful and unnecessary items.

Obi stated: “The just announced 60% cut in the size of federal official entourages on travels is one positive step towards the reduction of cost of governance and a way of halting wastage.

“But this measure is just scratching the surface as it is limited in scope and can only lead to a very negligible saving. We are yet to be told how much savings this will amount to.

“While this modest step may be somewhat commendable, what is desirable should be both a 60% reduction in federal official overseas trips as well as a 60% reduction in the size of delegations.

“Most importantly, what our current economic reality demands is a 60% reduction in the total cost of governance at the Federal level. This implies that the recently passed federal budget needs to be revised to cut all wasteful and unnecessary items.

“This is the level of cost-cutting and savings that can meaningfully impact the present state of the economy. This level of cut in the cost of government should lead to substantial savings.

“Such savings should be used to fund the productive sectors of the economy and the much-needed social investments, especially in three key areas: education, healthcare, and the migration of millions of Nigerians from poverty.

“Most importantly, it is not enough to announce arbitrary cuts in the size of federal official entourages. The nation needs to be informed of how much the measure will save and where such savings will be applied.”

Christmas: This season epitomizes love, peace, joy for all mankind – Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the last election, Peter Obi, has urged Christians to embrace love, peace and joy during Christmas.

Obi, who posted on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, also emphasized for leaders to reach out to the less privileged.

While lamenting the economic hardship confronting Nigerians, urged them not to allow it to hinder them from “appreciating the essence of our creation and the importance of seeking God’s mercy at all times”.

He wrote: “I wish you all a Merry Christmas as you join the Christendom to celebrate the anniversary of Jesus Christ.

“This season epitomizes love, peace and joy for all mankind. These are values and longings that unify our common humanity in a feast of love.

“This is why I wish to share the spirit of this season with all our compatriots irrespective of station, circumstance and persuasion. I fully acknowledge the difficulties of these times in our dear country.

“The hardship in the country, the biting effects of bad government policies and poor governance have dampened the hopes of most Nigerians. The difficulties and challenges of this moment should not however hinder us from appreciating the essence of our creation and the importance of seeking God’s mercy at all times.

“Furthermore, our current setbacks should not stop us as a people from aspiring to overcome present difficulties and realize the full potential of our blessed country.

“I therefore enjoin you to use this great feast to offer special supplications to God for our country so that we can have the opportunity of joining others in the global community to give thanks to God for the abundant gifts he lavished on us as a nation. As leaders, we must embrace the spirit of this season which emphasizes charity.

“For leaders, charity underlines compassion for the people in their present hardship. For us as a people, charity means sharing with our neighbours and the less privileged our material blessings.

“On this unique occasion, I wish to reassure our people that our adversity shall not persist for too long as we look forward to a New Nigeria.”

Peter Obi hails FG over 50% slash in price of interstate transport

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the last election, Peter Obi, has reacted to the 50 percent slash in the price of interstate transport fare for Nigerians travelling during this Yuletide.

The Nation reports that President Tinubu on Wednesday, December 20, approved a 50% rebate for inter-state travels and 100% for train travels for Nigerians wishing to embark on travels to other parts of the country for the Christmas and New Year festivities.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, December 22, the former Anambra state governor applauded the move by the federal government as the first-time intervention of the government, intended to help the masses, a step in the right direction.

He wrote: “I read the reports of the President’s approval of a 50 percent slash in the price of interstate transport fare for Nigerians travelling during this Yuletide from Thursday 21, 2023 to January 4, 2024.

“The news reports added that the President also approved free rides for commuters on all train services within the period. If fully implemented, as reported, I consider this first-time intervention of the government, intended to help the masses, a step in the right direction.

“However, the major concern about such emergency measures is what follows afterwards. The high cost of transportation and associated hardships are all well known. The question this seasonal palliative raises is that of what happens after the festive season. Is there a sustainable policy measure to cushion the masses from the current high transportation costs? Even the current effort comes with operational challenges.

“Millions of people have already traveled bearing the brunt and huge costs of such travels. How will such people get their refunds or be compensated?

“Following the government’s announcement of a 50% discount on interstate transport fare for Nigerians, I have taken time to inquire into the implementation mechanics across different cities but I have been disappointed.

“Today, I sent out contacts who consulted widely with the transporters in major parks across the country: in Abuja, they carried out on-the-spot investigation in Jabi/Utako areas; in Lagos, they visited major parks like Jibowu, Festac, Mile 12, Ajah, and Mazamaza and none of the transporters in these parks was aware of this 50% discount. At Upper Iweka, Onitsha, which is the main traffic hub in Anambra, and in other parts of the country like; Kano, Aba, Kaduna, Owerri, and Gombe, the story is the same.

“The government has again announced the few transport companies chosen to participate in the intervention for which 28 Routes have been designated. There are no announced forms of checks and balances to ensure that the transporters follow the terms of the contract.

“There are obvious questions on the integrity of this intervention effort. One expects that such a policy that strives to appeal to the broad masses, especially the downtrodden, deliberate and concrete arrangements should be made, with transport companies.

“I pray that this is not yet another spin to curry favour in the media space after appetizing the people. The Nigerian people are going through untold hardship and the government must not remain insensitive to their sufferings.

“Compassion on the part of government is a good thing, but it should not be an avenue for exploiting the weak structures of government to encourage less than transparent policy implementation.”

Kaduna bombing embarrassment for Army, Nigeria – Peter Obi

He stated: “I read with sadness, the devastating reports of the accidental bombing of Tudun Biri Village in the Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, by a Nigerian Army craft that mistook the villagers for terrorists.

“The lethal incident left death tolls reported to have risen to 80, with several others injured. While our military continues to fight impressively against insecurity in many parts of the country, they must exercise utmost caution and professionalism to avoid this kind of embarrassment to both the military and the country.

“Any incident that leads to harm or the loss of lives of the innocent people they are meant to protect should be avoided.

“Even though the mishap is one too many, the security agencies should work with reliable human intelligence report on the ground before any offensive attack to avoid innocent casualties, as has been reported in this case.

“Fatal mistakes like this leave indelible trauma on the families who have lost their loved ones to this ugly and unfortunate mishap. I sincerely commiserate with families that lost their loved ones.

“And to the dead, I pray God Almighty to forgive their sins and grant them eternal rest, and quick healing to the injured. We pray that such a mistake leading to a sorrowful outcome, as this, never happens again in our country.

“It is regrettable that the problem of insecurity in our nation has persisted for so long that we are now paying such unintended human costs as collateral damage.”
