    Police arrest six suspected armed robbers in FCT

    The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Police Command has arrested six suspected armed robbers in an uncompleted hospital building which is a marked black spot in Utako village.

    According to a statement issued on Friday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josphine Adeh: “The suspects; one Basara Hassan ‘m’ 41, Daniel Charles ‘m’ 27, Adamu M Oshiaka ‘m’ 32, Chancy Asidi ‘m’ 38 and Saliu Al Hassan ‘m’ 24, all from neighbouring states bordering FCT were arrested. A locally made pistol, two (2) live cartridges and wraps of substances suspected to be marijuana were recovered from the suspects.

    “Further investigation about the recovered ammunition, led to the arrest of one Yusuf Iliyasu a.k.a Tablet, who is an ex-convict and the syndicate leader.

    “While investigation is ongoing, the Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh psc, mni, wishes to assure residents of his unwavering commitment to make Abuja a hell for criminals and to ensure safety of all.

    Police, military nab four suspected kidnappers in Adamawa

    Police and military operatives in Adamawa State have nabbed four suspected kidnappers.

    The four were picked up after they allegedly kidnapped two residents of Michika local government area of northern Adamawa

    The Adamawa Police Command, which announced this in a statement on Friday, said the suspects stormed the house of one Ali Alhaji Shehu and took him and one Aminu Alhaji Shehu who was also in the house.

    The Command said its operatives made the arrest in collaboration with military operatives on February 8, 2024.

    The command gave the names of the suspects as Abubakar Abdullahi, 39, a resident of Mubi South Local Government Area, and Ibrahim Garba, 35, and a resident of Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

    It named the other two suspects as Isa Ahmadu, 30 and a resident of Dawarsa in Yobe State and Bulama Ahmadu, 20,  also a resident of Dawarsa.

    The police statement also mentioned a separate instance in which “another coordinated crime fighting strategy was carried out in collaboration with hunters at Gamu Hill.”

    It explained that in the Gamu Hill operation, one member of a syndicate of Kidnappers that has been terrorising Jada as well as Ganye and villages around them was killed and one AK-47 rifle recovered from him.

    Police arrest female ‘drug peddler’, reject N4m, other inducements

    A 43-year-old suspected female drug peddler, Esther Newman Obiekezie alias Candy has been arrested by the police in Lagos.

    Obiekezie was apprehended around 1am on February 6, by operatives attached to Morogbo, Ojo.

    The suspect, it was alleged, operated at Mojirade Street, off Ilogbo.

    Two live ammunition, substances suspected to be Crystal Methamphetamine

    and cash sum of N371,970 were recovered during a search of her premises.

    It was alleged that the suspect and her accomplices attempted to bribe the police with N4 million cash, a refrigerator and a television set to be released but the officer-in-charge, SP Rilwan Kasumu, rejected the bribe offer.

    Her alleged accomplices identified as Esther Akete, 43, and Okey Okebalam, 49, were said to have brought a new refrigerator, a 32 inch television and the sum of N4 million to the police to discontinue their investigation of Obiekezie and to allow her continue the sale of illicit substances without disturbances.

    Confirming the suspect’s arrest in a statement yesterday, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the Inspector General (IG) Kayode Egbetokun, applauded the officer and his team for refusing the inducements.

    Adejobi said the suspect sold a drug called ICE, adding that large quantities of it and AK-47 live ammunition were recovered at her place.

    “The police officer who frowned at the offer siezed the cash and marked it as exhibit and arrested the duo for further investigation and prosecution.

    “The IGP, therefore, reiterates the commitment of the Force to harnessing all available means and adopting professional anti crime strategies to tackle all forms of crimes and criminality in Nigeria,” he said.

    The Lagos State Police Command has advised the public, especially those who lost their vehicles to theft or abandoned as a result of accident to report at Ajuwe Police Division, Ajah, Lagos for identification and claims within 21 days.

    Police arraign six for allegedly assaulting Lizzy Anjorin in Lagos market

    No fewer than six traders have been arraigned for allegedly assaulting and blackmailing popular actress, Lizzy Anjorin-Lawal. 

    They were arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos Island Local Government.

    Those arraigned before Magistrate A. A. Paul include Qudus Jokogbola; Suru Olawale; Edu Shakirat; Fausat Mohammed; Kafayat Ahmed and Opere Simiat Morenike.

    The Nation learnt two other suspects were at large.

    The six defendants and the two others at large, according to the police on Thursday, committed the alleged offences around 1.30p.m on Monday inside Oba Akintoye Market, Lagos Island.

    The prosecutor, Sola Samuel informed the court that all the six individuals and two others said to be at large, conspired among themselves and forcefully pushed and dragged Anjorin, the action that caused her grievous bodily harm.

    The prosecutor also told the court that the defendant’s actions caused a breach of public peace.

    He told the court that the offences committed by the defendants contravened sections 411 and 413; 168(d) and 170(b) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015. And punishable under the same Act.

    All the defendants denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against them.

    Following their stance on the allegations, their lawyer, Ade Oshodi, who led the other six lawyers, informed the court that his clients were traders, urging that they be granted bail in the most liberal terms.

    The Magistrate, Paul, in his ruling, admitted each of the defendants to bail in the sum of N200 000 with one surety in like sum

    The magistrate also ordered the sureties be residents of Lagos State with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State government, among others.

    The court ordered that all the defendants be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) till when they will meet the bail terms and adjourned the case to March 11 for mention.

    The Niger State Police Command has arrested three women and 22 youths for leading Monday’s protest in Minna.

    According to the command, the protest disrupted the peace of the state capital.

    Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun said Aisha Jibrin mobilised other women and miscreants to block the Minna-Bida road and Kpakungun roundabout, leading to disruption of law and order.

    Abiodun added that the protesters deliberately refused to clear the road for public use, despite the presence of police patrol teams led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Shehu Didango, and Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba.

    He said: “The police adopted minimum force to disperse the protesters who turned violent by attacking the police with dangerous weapons thus damaging the police patrol vehicles and parts of the Kpakungu Division roof.

    “In the course of this, initiator of the protest, one Aisha Jibrin (30), Fatima Aliyu (57) and Fatima Isyaku (43), all of Soje ‘A’ of Kpakungu area of Minna, and 22 other miscreants were arrested.

    “They were arrested with dangerous weapons such as a bench and a stick used as barricade, three knives, one scissors, one cutlass, one saw blade, one iron pipe, four other sticks, two wraps of Indian hemp and charms.”

    But Jibrin said her actions were not illegal ‘because the plight of the hardship they are going through should be heard’. She said she never intended it to be a violent protest as she told one youth leader, Hassan, to inform the police about the protest, but didn’t know he did not inform the police.

    Madam Jibrin defended herself, saying ‘there is too much hunger in the land for the people to keep quiet about’.

    The police have however declared the protest as illegal.

    Abiodun said all suspects have been taken to the state CID for investigation after which they will be prosecuted.

    Delta Police Command gets commissioner

    A new Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Abaniwonda Olufemi, has assumed duty as the 22nd CP of Delta State Police Command.

    He succeeds AIG Wale Abass, who has been transferred to the Police Force Headquarters, Abuja.

    A statement by spokesman Bright Edafe, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the new police boss was born on February 22, 1966.

    The statement said Abaniwonda, who hails from Epe Local Government of Lagos State, holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History (1987) and a Master of Arts in Economics History (1990), both from the University of Lagos.

    He was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force as a member of Cadet ASP Course 17 on March 18, 1992. He attended Police Academy, Kaduna, and upon completion of training, he was posted to Kogi State Police Command as a young Assistant Superintendent of Police in November 1995.

    He has served in capacities in the Police Force.

    As a trained officer of international standard, he was deployed in Peace Keeping Mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2000, and was in 2008 seconded as the Training Adviser at the United Nations’ Integrated Office in Sierra Leone.(UNIOSIL)

    In 2015, he was posted to the Gwagwalada Area Command as the Area Commander, and in 2017, he was transferred to Oyo State Command as the Area Commander, Oyo Area Command.

    Upon his promotion to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police, he was tasked with administrative duty at the Department of Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

    He served at Kogi State Command as the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department.

    He was the Deputy Force Secretary at the Force Headquarters, Abuja. He was promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police in January 2024 and posted to Delta State as the 22nd Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command.

    Abaniwonda promised to build on the existing security mechanisms in place towards enthroning the reign of peace and safety in Delta State.

    The Niger State Police Command has arrested three women and 22 youths for leading the protest in Minna, claiming that the women-led other people to disrupt the peace of the state capital.

    According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, the leader of the women, Aisha Jibrin mobilized other women and miscreants to block the Minna-Bida road and Kpakungun roundabout leading to disruption of law and order.

    Abiodun said that the protesters had deliberately refused to clear the road for public use despite the presence of Police patrol teams led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, DCP Shehu Umar Didango, and the presence of the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Comrade Yakubu Garba.

    The PPRO further said that despite these personalities, the protesters turned deaf ears and chose to be violent leading the police to adopt minimum force to disperse the protesters.

    He said: “The Police adopted minimum force to disperse the protesters who turned violent by attacking the Police with dangerous weapons such as stones, bottles, sticks, cutlasses and damaged Police patrol vehicles and parts of the Kpakungu Division roof.

    “In the course of this, the Police arrested the initiator of the protest, one Aisha Jibrin aged 30 years, Fatima Aliyu aged 57 years, Fatima Isyaku aged 43 years all of Soje ‘A’ of Kpakungu area of Minna, and twenty-two other miscreants with the following dangerous weapons; a bench and a stick used as a barricade, three knives, one scissors, one cutlass, one saw blade, one iron pipe, four other sticks, two wraps of Indian hemp and charms.”

    The Initiator of the protest, Aisha Jibrin while defending herself said that her actions were not illegal as she believed that the plight of the hardship they are going through should be heard.

    She said that she never intended it to be a violent protest as she informed one youth leader whom she called Hassan in the community who was given the task to inform the Police about their plan to protest adding that she did not know that he did not inform the police.

    Jibrin defended herself saying that there is too much hunger in the land for the people to keep quiet about.

    However, the Police have declared Aisha’s mobilization of over 100 women and youths whom they called miscreants to block the highway for the protest was illegal

    The PPRO said that all suspects were taken to the State CID for investigation after which they will be charged to court for prosecution adding that effort is ongoing to arrest other identified members of the violent protest.

    In a related development, the Niger State House of Assembly directed the state government to provide palliatives to the most vulnerable members of society to forestall future protests which may be hijacked.

    The legislators noted that the women protested against the high cost of living in the society and inadequate response from the government compelled them to block the main roads to draw the attention of the government.

    Police confirm rescue of kidnapped Kwara queen, one other

    The Police Command in Kwara said it had rescued the wife of the late Oba Olusegun Aremu-Cole, the Onikoro of Koro-Ekiti and one other in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that suspected gunmen on Feb. invaded the Oba`s palace, killed him and abducted his wife and two others.

    DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, the command`s spokesman who disclosed this in statement on Tuesday in Ilorin, said that the operation also led to the arrest of 13 suspects.

    He said that in the course of investigation, the Inspector -General of Police (I-G), approved the deployment of a police helicopter for aerial surveillance, to help comb the forest and boundary between Kwara and Ekiti.

    “The operation led to the rescued of kidnap victims and they have been re-united with their families, hale and hearty.

    “The suspects are undergoing vigorous interrogation with a view to aid the arrest of other members of the gang who are at large,“he said.

    He said that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Victor Olaiya, remains resolute to prosecute the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

    He further urges the public to be calm and security conscious as they go about their daily activities without fear or anxiety.
