    Police nab couple trafficking one-month-old baby in Onitsha

    A couple trafficking one month old baby from Lagos has been arrested by the Police at the Bridgehead in Onitsha, Anambra state.

    The state police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, who disclosed this in a statement, said the suspects were intercepted following a call by a passenger traveling with them in the same vehicle.

    He said the suspects confessed buying the child from the mother in Ajah, Lagos for N30,000.

    Also, the suspects have been handed over to the National Agency for Prohibition in Trafficking of Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and prosecution.

    Ikenga added that the baby has been handed to the Ministry of Women Affairs for care by the state government.

    He said: “The police in Anambra state have arrested a couple trafficking one month old Baby from Lagos. The interception was made at Bridgehead in Onitsha on 17th December, 2023.

    “The couple were travelling in a Luxury bus belonging to a popular transport company with the baby when a co-passenger observed that the mother could not breastfeed the baby despite its cry for food in the course of the journey.

    “The good samaritan put a call through to Anambra Police on its Control Room hotline in Awka which then relayed the information to the Police at Bridgehead in Onitsha.

    “The Police laid in wait for the luxury bus described and intercepted it in the evening hours. The couple and the Baby were identified and brought down for questioning.

    “They confessed buying the child from its mother in Ajah, Lagos for the sum of N30,000.”

    “The Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye who thanked the public spirited citizen for his humane concern in giving the information that led to the rescue of the child, commended Police Operatives  for their vigilance and dedication to duty. 

    “He has directed that the couple be handed to National Agency for Prohibition in Trafficking of Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and prosecution. 

    “Meanwhile the Baby has been handed to the Ministry of Women Affairs for care by the State Government.”

    Yuletide: Police restate ban on sale, unauthorised use of fireworks in Enugu

    The Enugu State Police Commissioner, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has said that the ban on sale and unauthorised use of fireworks, commonly known as “knockout” or “banger,” is still in force in the state.

    The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, on behalf of the commissioner said this in a statement on Sunday, December 17, in Enugu.

    Ndukwe quoted the commissioner as saying that the menace associated with letting off fireworks include: criminals using it to perfect their criminal intentions and creating tension.

    He added that promoting fireworks could pose serious danger to human lives and property due to high tendency to cause bodily injuries and fire outbreaks, particularly during the harmattan.

    He cautioned dealers and users of fireworks to refrain from it forthwith.

    He added: “parents and guardians should discourage their children and wards from buying and igniting fireworks; violators would be made to face the full weight of the law.

    “Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Heads of Tactical Units of the Command should ensure that the ban is enforced.”

    Police in Anambra State have rescued four children from same parents kidnapped by herdsmen in Achalla Village, Enugwu Agidi in Njikoka Local Government Area of the State.

    The police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga who confirmed this in a statement, said the rescue operation followed a distress call by the mother of the victims.

    He said the abductors took advantage of the absence of the parents to kidnap the children between ages of 13 and 21 who were fast asleep around 10pm.

    He said the victims had been reunited with their parents while efforts were on to apprehend the abductors.

    He said, “On 15th December, 2023 at about 2300 the Police at Abagana received information via Police hot line that suspected herdsmen had abducted four children from a family at Achalla Village, Enugwu Agidi in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.

    “The caller, who is mother of the children, disclosed that the family was watching Television at about 2200 hrs (10p.m.) when the light suddenly went out.

    “The man of the house went out to find out what was amiss and the wife followed him. They observed three gunmen suspected to be herdsmen and fled for dear lives.

    “By the time they summoned courage to return to the house they discovered that their four children who were already asleep had been abducted by the gunmen.

    “Immediately the Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye received the report, he ordered immediate mobilisation of Police personnel and vigilante to go after the kidnappers with a view to rescuing the children.

    “In the early hours of today Saturday, 16th December, 2023 the four children aged 13, 14, 21 and 21 years were rescued close to Urum, 25 kilometres away from their home in Achala village, Enugwu-Agidi.

    “The children have been reunited with their parents while the dragnet for the armed herdsmen is being extended to neighbouring communities.”

    “The Commissioner of Police has issued a stern warning to those engaged in kidnapping their fellow humans for money that when caught, they will be treated worse than armed robbers.

    “Meanwhile security has been beefed up in the area to forestall a recurrence.”

    Police nab three armed robbery suspects in Abuja

    The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has apprehended Gabriel Abba, Sunday Abba, and Abdulkareem Jaffaru over an alleged robbery.

    The trio were linked to a spate of armed robberies, car snatchings, and one-chance activities within the FCT.

    The suspects, long under the command’s watch for these offenses, were taken into custody.

    According to a statement issued on Saturday, December 16, by the FCT police public relations officer, SP Josephine Adeh: “The operation resulted in the recovery of two vehicles: an ash-colored Toyota Corolla Car without a registered number and a black Toyota Camry 206 model, also without a registered number and one baretta pistol.

    “While investigations are ongoing to locate and apprehend other members of the syndicate currently evading arrest, Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Haruna G. Garba psc, reassures residents of an unwavering commitment to fostering a secure and serene environment.

    Police rescue 263 kidnap victims in Katsina

    • Kill 12 terror-suspects in six months

    Police authorities in Katsina State have killed 12 suspected terrorists and rescued 263 kidnapped victims from June to December 2023.

     Within the period under review, 1,269 suspects have been arrested out of the 1,009 cases recorded by the command.

     Out of this number, 458 suspects have been charged to court, 21 cases are under investigation and 49 are awaiting trial, the police commissioner in the state Aliyu Musa said on Wednesday at the Katsina Police Command Headquarters, Katsina when he received the newly posted Assistant Inspector General of Police, in charge of Zone 14 Yahaya Abubakar.

     In the meantime, 104 suspected armed robbers have been arrested alongside 97 murder/culpable homicide suspects as well as 148 suspected rapists.

     He said the Command is working tirelessly toward the reduction of crimes such as kidnapping, cattle rustling, culpable homicide, rape, and other lesser crimes comprising of criminal breach of trust, cheating, criminal trespass, theft, and mischief, among others in the state.

     In his address, the newly posted Zone 14 AIG which comprises Kaduna and Katsina State commands,  said the visit was part of his familiarization tour to interact with officers and men of the command to address them on his clear-cut policy since his assumption of duty.

     He explained that the visit was aimed at devising ways to pilot the activities and improve the security architecture of the command towards ensuring a safer Katsina state.

    Ekiti robbery: Police recover vehicles, motorcycles

    The  Police Command in Ekiti,  says it has recovered three vehicles and two motorcycles used by the Armed Robbers that invaded Ikere-Ekiti, killing three people during bank robberies in the town.

    This is contained in a statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Sunday Abutu on Thursday in Ado- Ekiti.

    The command is on the trail of the fleeing suspects who abandoned the vehicles after a hot chase by men of the command.

    The State Commissioner of Police, CP OGUNDARE DARE, has also visited the scene of armed robbery incident at Ikere-Ekiti for an on-the-spot assessment.

    The commissioner, who expressed  displeasure over the ugly incident, directed the Ikere Area Commander and all the Tactical Teams within the command to ensure the perpetrators were trailed, arrested and brought to book.

    While commiserating with the family members of those who were fatally affected and wishing those currently receiving treatment in the hospital a quick recovery, the commissioner called for calm and implored everyone to go about their lawful businesses as the command would not rest until the hoodlums were made to face the full wrath of the law.

    Meanwhile, the command’s tactical squads as well as the military who were deployed to the scene on Wednesday, Dec. 13, immediately information was received, engaged the hoodlums who abandoned the three vehicles and two motorcycles they used for the operation and escaped into the bush. The vehicles and motorcycles were recovered to the station.

    Five die in Anambra club shooting – Police

    The Police command in Anambra, has confirmed the killing of five persons after Sunday’s shooting at a nightclub in Oba in Idemili South Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

    The state Commissioner of Police Aderemi Adeoye, said this when he spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Awka.

    Adeoye said that the victims included two members of a local vigilance, a bouncer and two fun seekers.

    He said that the owner of the club was also abducted by the attackers.

    Adeoye described the incident as unfortunate and vowed to hunt down the perpetrators.

    “We got a distress call at about 2a.m., Monday, the DPO Oba Division led police officers and members of local vigilance group to the scene, but the attackers had already fled the scene.

    “The police Rapid Response Squad from Awkuzu was on patrol in the area from 6p.m., to midnight before moving to other parts of the state and the incident happened after the team left the area.

    “Five persons were killed, they include, two vigilance group members, one bouncer and two clubbers.

    ”The owner of the hotel was abducted in the process,” he said.

    Adeoye said that the police had yet to make arrest on the incident, adding that investigations had commenced to unravel the attackers.

    “We have seen a pattern; the gang was responsible for a similar incident where the victim’s body was dismembered about two weeks ago in Ihiala.

    “We have an idea of the axis they are operating from, we are going to crack them down, no arrest has been made and investigation is ongoing

    “Oba has always been a flashpoint because of the thriving nightlife, lots of hotels and strategically located, so we intend to deploy additional assets and personnel to that axis, especially this yuletide, to make sure criminals do not make life miserable for people,” he said.

    ‘’The decay in values is not strange to the people but unfortunately, we have to live with the consequences, this is one of the reasons why the public enlightenment agencies were created.

    “Community leaders, religious leaders should step up the campaign against immorality, unnecessary show of affluence and criminality.

    “Investigation has shown that most of the money you see on display in night clubs are not legitimately earned, most are proceeds of crime, so we all have work to do, a law enforcement agency, we will continue to do our part.’’

    Mr Chidozie Nwangu, a native doctor known as ‘Akwa okuko tiwara aki’ was kidnapped in his hotel room in Oba in July in a similar attack which resulted in the killing of two security guards.
