    Police arrest four over alleged ATM card swapping, armed robbery in Enugu

    The police in Enugu state have arrested four male suspects for armed robbery, unlawful possession of ammunition, and fraudulent ATM card swapping.

    One of the suspects, Aneke Felix Ogbonna, aged 26, was arrested for allegedly swapping the ATM cards of some bank customers in the state.

    The police spokesperson in the state, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed in a statement on Monday morning that the suspect was arrested at a commercial bank along Agbani Road, Enugu on 06/12/2023 at about 8.30 a.m.

    According to Ndukwe, the suspect and his accomplices, who escaped, had unsuspectingly swapped the ATM card of the bank’s customer before his arrest.

    He said: “Several banks’ ATM cards bearing different names were recovered from him, while he confessed to having severally committed the fraudulent act of ATM card swapping with his criminal gang members at large.”

    The police also disclosed that the operatives on December 7, 2023, at about 5 p.m., upon receipt of a distress call on an armed robbery operation, hastened up to Phase 2 axis of Independence Layout and arrested one suspect, Chukwudi Nweze aged 29, while his cohorts escaped.

    He added: “One locally fabricated pistol was recovered from him. Similarly, on 26/11/2023 at about 10.45 p.m., Police Operatives from the Command’s New Haven Police Division intercepted and arrested one Chibuike Omeje, 26, along Chime Avenue in New Haven, Enugu, while one locally fabricated double-barrelled pistol was recovered from him.

    “In a related development, Police Operatives of Number 3 Police Mobile Force (PMF) Enugu, while on routine stop and search duty along the Enugu/Onitsha expressway, on 06/12/2023 at about 11.50 a.m., intercepted and arrested one Alozie Clinton Chidubem aged 22, and found in his unlawful possession two live cartridges.

    The spokesman disclosed that all the suspects shall be arraigned in court and prosecuted accordingly once ongoing investigations into the cases were concluded.

    Meanwhile, the Enugu State Command’s Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has reiterated the firm commitment of the police to maintain maximum security, law, and order in the state, especially in this yuletide.

    The commissioner enjoined the citizenry to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and continue to support the Police with credible information required to further rid the State of obdurate criminal elements.

    Police rescue kidnapped housewife in Kaduna

    The Police Command in Kaduna State, said its operatives have rescued a kidnap victim, a housewife in the early hours of yesterday.

    The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansur Hassan, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Kaduna.

    Hassan said: “At about 0100hrs on Sunday, our operatives received a call that a group of armed men not yet ascertained invaded a house at Dogarawa area of Sabon Gari Zaria Local Government.

    “The kidnappers kidnapped a house wife aged 37, at the residence “On receiving the call our team of patrol rushed to the scene and pursued the criminals. Due to our fire power superiority, they abandoned the kidnapped victim, which led to her rescue.”

    He said the kidnapped victim had been reunited with her family unhurt .

    Hassan said investigation was ongoing, while efforts were also intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects to face the full wrath of law.

    He appealed for timely and useful information for proactive measures.

    Man ‘kills, buries mum, sister in shallow grave’

    Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested a young man, Somadina Orji, for allegedly killing his mother, Mrs. Charity Orji, and his sister, Miss Ukamaka Orji.

    The suspect allegedly buried the deceased in a shallow grave at their backyard in their home at Umuagu Inyi, in Oji River Local Government of Enugu State.

    The 25-year-old suspect, who hails from Igbariam in Anambra State, was said to have committed the offence on December 4, at Umuagu Inyi, in Oji River Local Government of Enugu State.

    According to reports and videos of the incident, the late Charity, an indigene of Inyi, but married in Igbariam, Anambra State, had been living in her family house with her children for some years.

    Unfortunately, her son, who allegedly was into hard drugs and had been having issues with her for some time, killed her.

    A community leader at Inyi, Mr. Ben Obi, who spoke to reporters, said problems started weeks ago when the suspect quarrelled with his younger brother.

    “Somadina had wanted to hit his younger brother before Charity, their mother, stopped him. She promptly reported the incident to their kinsmen, asking them to come and chase him away from the house because he wanted to kill the younger brother.

    “Before all this started happening, the younger sister of Somadina was already missing. For two weeks, nobody saw her or knew her whereabouts.

    “We learnt that their mother went for a condolence visit at Akpugoeze, and when she returned in the afternoon, the son, Somadina, killed and buried her in a shallow grave in their backyard.

    “When the younger brother came back and was looking for their mother, he suspected something was wrong and raised the alarm.

    “The villagers gathered at the compound and upon interrogation, Somadina confessed that he had killed his mother.

    “He also confessed that he killed the missing younger sister some weeks ago.

    “The confession left the entire village devastated that something like this happened without anyone of us tracing it,” Obi said.

    The community leader said when the police were invited, the remains of the mother and the sister were exhumed and deposited at the mortuary, and the suspect was arrested.

    He said Charity, until her death, sold ‘fufu’ to feed her family.

    Confirming the incident yesterday, police spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe said the suspect had been arrested and investigation was on.

    He said after investigation, he would be arraigned.

    The police have denied the arrest of one Boko Haram suspect in Abuja.

    According to an online report, security operatives on Saturday morning arrested a Boko Haram suspect around an estate in Kuchibuyi, Kubwa area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja,

    The report said the suspect confessed he fled from Sambisa Forest to Abuja and had been wandering in the area.

    Reacting to the development, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Police public relations officer, SP Josephine Adeh told our correspondent that investigation has been carried out and that the incident is false and residents of FCT should ignore the report.

    She said: “There is nothing like this incident. I even called the village chief of the mentioned area (Kuchibuyi) to confirm if there was any such incident. He said there was no such incident in his village.

    “The CP is assuring members of the public of their safety and security. The Command has employed working strategies to safeguard life and property before, during and after the yuletide seasons.”

    Ogun State Police Command has warned owners of abandoned or recovered vehicles parked at Ogbere Division, to remove them within two weeks or risk forfeiture.

    According to a statement by the police command, the vehicles include “two Toyota Camry cars with registration numbers-819 SM, LSR 460 BZ; one Toyota Hiace bus (APP 867 XZ); one unregistered Toyota Camry car; one unregistered Mercedes Benz; one Volkswagen (MUS 912 AZ) and one DAF truck head (APP 526 XF).

    “Others are: five unregistered Bajaj motorcycles; one Bajaj motorcycle (PMD 715 QC); one TVS motorcycle (Y 406 UW) and one blue Honda motorcycle,” the statement signed by the deputy spokesperson of the command, Folashade Oluwole added.

    How 18-year-old undergraduate was murdered, by police

    The police have given insight into how the 18-year-old undergraduate of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU,) Ile-Ife, Osun State, was murdered.

    The student, Quadri Salami, was last seen on November 8 by the family. His father reported at the Kemta Divisional Police Headquarters, Ogun State, on November 14. His body was however discovered in a shallow grave on December 6, with the head and wrists missing.

    One Akeem Usman, who was in possession of the victim’s phone, has since been arrested. His arrest led to the arrest of another, Ifadowo Niyi, and investigations have shown that both of them slaughtered Quadri.

    A statement by spokesperson of the Kemta Divisional Police Headquarters, Omolola Odutola, reads: “The Ogun State Police Command has unravelled the disappearance of one Quadri Salami (18), an 100-level student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, whose father reported him missing at Kemta Police station, on November 14.

    “The Commissioner of Police, Alamutu Abiodun, on December 6, personally led a team of Tactical Squad to Mile 6 in Ajebo area of Abeokuta, to a shallow grave to exhume the decomposing body after a tracking clue beamed on one Akeem Usman who was arrested for being in possession of the victim’s phone. He implicated one Ifadowo Niyi (m) that both of them committed the crime.

    “Ifadowo bought Quadri’s head and wrists for N100,000. The suspects thereafter continued to sell the victim’s other body parts on demand to internet fraudsters and buried the heart, legs and flesh inside a plastic rubber for rituals. They also used the remaining parts for Awure, a crime against humanity.

    “The suspects, in their confessional statement, admitted to have used four other human heads for money rituals known as Osole. They are now in Eleweran at SCID for continuation of discreet investigations and will be prosecuted.

    “The CP is committed to ensuring that justice is served, and will continue to investigate further to bring all perpetrators to face the full extent of the Law.”

    Police to impound vehicles with shielded vehicle number plates in Katsina

    The Police Command in Katsina State says it will begin impounding vehicles with covered plate numbers as from Monday.

    The spokesman of the command, ASP Aliyu Abubakar-Sadiq, announced this in a statement issued to newsmen in Katsina on Thursday.

    He said, “This is to inform the public that the command has observed with great dissatisfaction the proliferation of driving motor vehicles in the state without or with covered number plates.

    Kogi State Police Command has cautioned politicians against heating up the state through statements that may ‘prejudice investigations’ into allegations of violence.

    In a statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police William Aya, the police said people should desist from making comments that can cause confusion. 

    The statement read: “On Monday 04/12/2023 about 1820hrs, one Mr David Umar Mike ‘m’, Secretary to Kogi State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, along with Labode Apreala (f) Confidential Secretary and Hassimu Adamu, Assistant Secretary, came to State Criminal Investigation Department, Kogi State Police Headquarters and reported that on the said date, the three of them left their Hotel rooms in Lokoja about 1300hrs heading to their Office at the High Court Complex driving in his (David’s) Peugeot 406 car.

    “That just before the CBN at about 1320hrs, one SUV vehicle, which had earlier overtaken him blocked his car with two other SUVs following behind. All of them surrounded and blocked him as he attempted to reverse.

    “That he saw about seven hooded men all heavily armed and dressed in black attire who shot severally into the air and dragged him and his two other colleagues out of their car, ransacked the car and made away with all the documents including Petitions filed by four (4) Parties namely Action Alliance (AA), Action People’s Party (APP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP)/two (2) Record Books/a Bag containing his personal items.

    “He claimed to have also reported to the DSS Office. Hence a thorough and diligent investigation into the incident has been ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command.

    “The attention of Kogi State Police Command has been drawn to series of distorted information on the incident hence the need to set the records straight.

    “The general public is advised to avoid statements that may prejudice ongoing investigation into the matter.

    The Command also appeals to anyone with useful information on the alleged incident to provide same to the Command. The public will be updated as investigation progresses”, the statement concluded.

    Police arrest five suspects over shooting, robbery

    Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested five suspects in connection with the recent robbery attacks and killings in some parts of the state, particularly at the Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade.

    The command said it recovered two Lexus cars stolen during recent robberies.

    Police Commissioner Abiodun Alamutu made this known yesterday while speaking about the security situation across the state.

    Suspected hoodlums recently invaded communities hosting students of the Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade in Remo North Local Government, robbed and shot some of the students.

    Alamutu said operatives of the command in Remo North Division received a distress call on December 2 about 3am that robbers were on the rampage in their community, adding that the Divisional Police Officer and his men responded to the call, met a group of robbers and there was an exchange of gunfire between the police and the armed men.

    He said in their bid to escape, the robbers shot at four students, who were walking along the road and made away with a Lexus car they had snatched at gunpoint from another student.

    Alamutu said one of the victims of gunshots died on the way to hospital, while the three others were treated and discharged.

    He said the police later tracked the stolen Lexus car to Oke Itoku area of Abeokuta where it was recovered.

    He said another Lexus car, discovered to have been snatched at Ajuwon by the same gang, was also recovered.

    The CP said some members of the gang were later arrested through intelligence gathering, while a member of another gang that robbed people of their phone at gunpoint was also nabbed.

    “He had escaped into the bush upon the arrival of policemen on the scene, but was later fished out with the help of the indigenes. As we speak, about eight police patrol teams now operate within the area,” Alamutu added.

    The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, CP Haruna Garba, has warned against any form of disturbance of public peace, unlawful assembly and criminal infiltration of lawful assembly within the FCT.

    He gave the warning yesterday while confirming the arrest of five suspects in connection with the attempted  infiltration of the November 30, 2023 National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) convention to disrupt the process.

    The suspects were promptly intercepted by security operatives, some of whom were handed over to the Police by the Department of State Services (DSS).

    The suspects are: Adeniran Femi, Ishaya Christopher, Obigi Emeka, Fatokun Ayodele and Abdullahi Saliu.

    Exhibits recovered from them include a pump action gun, one locally made double barrel shotgun, two locally made pistol, one baretta pistol, 15 live ammunition, cartridges, an axe, 12 cutlasses, mobile phones, bag containing uniforms of security agencies and a Mazda car with registration number RBC909DP, which contains some of the exhibits.

    According to a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, investigation is being intensified while efforts are ongoing to arrest other suspects still at large.

    Adeh said the suspects would be charged to court on conclusion of investigations.
