Police rescue 23 foreign nationals kidnapped for N230m ransom

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismantled a transnational kidnapping syndicate that demanded N230m in ransom from foreign nationals lured into Nigeria under false promises of money-spinning jobs.

Police said its operatives rescued 23 victims and arrested 14 suspects during a sting operation in Nasarawa State.

The Command’s Scorpion Squad launched the operation around 8 pm on Tuesday, October 22, 2025, at Angwan Adamu Ruga Fulani Zone B, Riverside, Ado Mararaba, where the hostages were held.

According to police findings, the foreigners from West African countries were deceived into travelling to Nigeria by a criminal syndicate posing as recruiters.

Once they arrived, the kidnappers held them captive and demanded ransom from their families via WhatsApp and other online platforms.

FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, on Friday, said investigations identified the ring leader as Abubakar Jigiba, a suspected notorious cross-border criminal with known residences in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, and Nigeria.

His younger brother, Sougule Zoubere, allegedly coordinated the fake recruitment, trafficking, and detention of victims smuggled from Mali into Nigeria through illegal border routes.

The syndicate, she explained, demanded four million CFA (N10m) per person, amounting to N230m in total ransom.

Adeh said: “The victims were trafficked into the country through illegal border routes in a journey lasting about three days. They were subsequently confined in two fortified two-bedroom apartments under inhumane conditions.

“Acting on digital and reconstructive intelligence, the Scorpion Squad traced the hideout to the above address where a total number of 23 victims, comprising 14 males, eight females, and one child, all unhurt, except one who sustained a minor ear injury and has been taken to the National Hospital, Abuja, for medical attention”.

The police arrested the following suspects in connection with the crime: Bubakari Cisse (40); Karamogo Dembele (25); Musa Kamsoko (23); Amadou Traore (25); Sareba Traore (24); Zoumana Diara (23); Umar Koulibaly (26); Alasgara Sagara (20); Berthe Saidu (23); Abdullahi Napo (32); Isah Goita (26); Lorita Traore (22); Mohammed Siaaibe (23); and Haruna Dembele (37).

Adeh confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down the principal suspect, Abubakar Jigiba, and his brother Sougule Zoubere, both of whom remain at large.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Miller Dantawaye, urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to the FCT Police Command via its emergency hotlines: 08032003913, 08028940883, and CRU: 08107314192.

    •Security beefed up across Lagos

The Lagos State Command said it was investigating reports of threatening calls to residents especially those residing in highbrow areas by unknown persons.

Commissioner of Police (CP) Olohundare Jimoh, gave the assurances in a chat with The Nation, describing the callers as fraudsters.

Some A-list businessmen resident in Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki had expressed concerns that strange numbers were calling them claiming to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and other northern terror groups, making financial demands from them.

They alleged that the calls have been too frequent, adding that almost everyone in their circle of friends had received similar calls.

“When the person called me and said I have been reported to them and I should come and pay certain amount of money, I told him to get off my phone. But I didn’t stop there. I contacted some people I know in the security services to track the number.

“That’s where we have been. It seems the person threw the SIM card or probably knows he will be tracked. This has happened to many of my friends. It is alarming. Cybercrimes and threats are too many these days,” one of them said.

The Nation gathered that some of those contacted by these cyber criminals had reported to the Department of State Services (DSS) and provided the numbers of the callers.

Two of the victims alleged their own callers claimed to be members of a northern sect and threatened them to pay a certain amount of money or risk being harmed.

“I do not know why it is taking so long to track and get these individuals. They should be fished out and used as examples,” said another.

Reacting to this, CP Jimoh appealed to those who have received such calls to report to the police station nearest to them to assist with investigation.

“Although they have not reported to us, we have heard about such complaints and have commenced imvestigation. People should not be afraid to come forward with such complaint. The police are here for the citizens.

“I believe those making such calls are fraudsters who probably got their numbers from common social media groups. People should not be panicked. We have no such terror groups in Lagos,” he said.

Meanwhile, the command has intensified security across the state to prevent any planned hijack of critical infrastructure.

The security beef-up commenced on Monday following plans by aggrieved Oworonshoki residents to block the Third Mainland Bridge to protest the demolition of their homes by the government.

Aside from the residents, activist, Owoyele Sowore and his Take It Back followers had vowed to lay siege on the bridge in solidarity with the protesters.

Considering the critical role the bridge plans in the commute of people to and fro the Island and Mainland, the police command said it would not tolerate any form of disruption on the bridge.

“Our officers are fully deployed to ensure the safety of all road users and to prevent any form of obstruction or breach of the peace. Members of the public are therefore advised to go about their lawful activities without fear and to cooperate with security personnel carrying out their duties.

“The Command remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting lives and property, and to ensuring the free flow of traffic across Lagos State,” spokesperson for the command, SP Abimbola Adebisi said in a statement.

  • ‘Police officers are good readers, deep in intellect’

‘Police officers are good readers, deep in intellect’

A public presentation of two books may appear ordinary, as many books have been presented in the past by an author at a go. But, when such books are written by a police officer, Superintendent of Police Chidi Okoye, then such efforts are more than ordinary. It is simply a commendable feat.

Little wonder colleagues, relations and friends converged on Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island Lagos, recently to witness the unveiling of two books, The Syndicate Affairs and Checkmate by Chidi Okoye. It was organised by CO Books Enterprise and Solomon Arase and Associates. The books were not only educative and morally instructive, but also products of a fertile mind for analysis, reasoning and imagination as well as creativity.

The Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone Two Command, Mr. Adegoke Fayoade, who was impressed by Okoye’s efforts at documenting some of his major cases, said despite the 24/7 duty call, Okoye still found time to write such books.

“He has been up and doing, improving himself, and he is a very versatile and deep investigator. My experience of him within the short period I had matters to do with him showed he is competent.  Give him any matter to handle, he goes deeper into it and makes sure he unravels the mystery behind it,” Fayoade said.

Recalling how Okoye who is Head, Zonal Quick Interventions Squad at Zone Two, started writing the books, Fayoade said: “When he approached me that he is writing a book, he gave me a copy of it to go through. I discovered that the book is a collection of some of the cases we had handled in the past. And you will find that those cases are very interesting, as he is able to bring out the criminal aspects of them. He is also able to bring out the major elements of those cases, as if he is a qualified lawyer. In fact, the way he wrote this book, you think he has been to the law school. That’s why I’m imploring him to enrol for a degree in law without wasting time.”

According to Fayoade, Okoye’s effort is a confirmation to the fact that police officers also have time to read and are deep in intellect unlike the impression people have about policemen.

“This is an example of a police officer who is highly intellectual, who is an author, and has made us proud today. He has made Zone Two headquarters proud, made Nigeria Police proud, and we are very proud of him,” he added.

Reviewer of one of the books, The syndicate Affairs, Art Editor and Deputy Editorial Board Chairman, Vanguard Newspaper, Dr. Osa Mbonu-Amadi, described the book as an expository narrative that reveals how people are framed sometimes for crimes and made to pay through their noses to prove their innocence.

He noted that Okoye maintains via his creative narrative, that ‘not every scandal is real. Some are fabricated for culprits to cash out. Sadly, some rogue officers smile to the bank through blackmails.’

“The title of the book is apt. The cover is beautifully designed with props indicating the nature of the subject matter. Employing real settings such as police stations, headquarters, towns, and estates in Lagos makes the plot convincing as more of a faction than fiction. Speaking of the genre, it’s not certain whether the account of detective Dikko on pages 175 to 177 about his entanglements with Funmi should be classified as faction or pure fiction. “However, it is a smart way of cooling the tempo of the successive actions and letting the storyteller himself and the reader breathe. The chronicle of their intimate scene was also done with some level of decency, yet, you’ll know Dikko is a ‘bad boy’ in that field. But as grave as the subject matter is, it is commendable that the author sees the need to infuse some element of romance into the plot.

“The crime novel is un-put-down-able. It is informative, educative, and generally makes an interesting read, he asserted. Professor of Public Law and Criminology, and Head, Dept. of Public Law, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, Prof. Olugbenga Akingbehin, was the reviewer of the second book, Checkmate.

Chairman on the occasion, Chairman, Ailes Group, Chief Micheal Onuoha, described the author as a huge asset not only to the police, but also to the nation, adding that he would remain an inspiration to other officers and men of the force.

Chief Onuoha assured that he will continue to support the work of the author, believing that Nigeria will create true men of his kind.

Guests at the presentation included Hon. Lawal Pedro, The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Assistant Inspector General of Police Abutu Yaro Fdc (Rtd), The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Moshood Jimoh, Rev. Dubus Achufusi GO (Spiritual Father of the Day), CEO Chisco Group of Company, Dr. Chidi Anyaegbu, (Father of the day), CEO Brittania-U Nigeria Limited, Catherine Uju Ifejika (Mother of the day), and Dr. Monday Oyekachi Ubani (SAN).

Police arrest herbalist, stepbrother over kidnap, murder of two

    • Officers recover bodies of two victims

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old herbalist, Amechi Okwuokenye and his step-brother, Smart Okwuokenye, 26, following their alleged abduction and murder of one Mr. Friday Liberty.

The incident occurred recently at Owa-Alidima in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.

Shedding light into the investigation and subsequent arrest of the suspects, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said Friday Liberty, 22, had visited his herbalist for an unknown purpose but did not return home hence his family began to search for him, confused about his whereabouts.

He said Liberty’s girlfriend informed the family about overhearing suspicious conversations involving the herbalist, suggesting they should reach out.

The spokesman said the family contacted the herbalist who denied having seen Liberty but offered to perform spiritual incantations for his safe return, prompting them to spend money on these services.

He said the promised incantations yielded no results, which led to the family’s frustration and subsequent action.

The police spokesman said on October 14, the family filed a petition at the Agbor Area Command, reporting Liberty’s disappearance.

He said following the report, detectives began a focused investigation, utilising leads and tips for direction.

He said the detectives uncovered Liberty’s last contact: the herbalist who had denied seeing him, noting that the revelation raised suspicions about the herbalist’s involvement in Liberty’s disappearance.

Edafe said surveillance was laid around his shrine at Owa-Alidima in Ika North East Local Government, for days, until he was arrested on October 23rd in his shrine while hiding inside a refrigerator.

The spokesman stated: “Upon arrest of the herbalist, he confessed that both he and his 26-year-old brother, Smart Okwuokenye, kidnapped the victim and the motorcycle rider identified as Isioma Ugbeje, who carried him to the shrine.

“They further stated that Liberty has been his long-time customer who frequently visited him to hypnotise clients so they could give him money easily (in his words, ‘to tie clients‘).

“The herbalist said his elder brother approached him that he needed money and advised him to lure any of his clients so they could kidnap him and ask for ransom, and the unlucky person they could lure was Liberty.

“They kidnapped him and the Okada rider and demanded a ransom of N10 million. When they noticed that the plan was not working, they murdered him and the motorcycle rider and dumped their bodies in a soak away pit by the shrine.”

The spokesman said the suspects are in custody, and the remains of the victims have been evacuated and deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.

Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, assured the public that the command would ensure that justice is served in this case.

Demolition: Police dismiss alleged violence in Oworonshoki

The Lagos State Police Command has described as baseless and mischievous, allegations that its operatives attached to the Taskforce acted unprofessionally during the demolition exercise at Oworonshoki, weekend.

Specifically, the Police Command maintained that the deployed operatives were professional in discharge of their responsibility, stressing the reports which published otherwise, misrepresented the facts to mislead the public.

In line with its urban renewal drive, the Lagos State Government continued demolition in Oworonshoki after months of protests by residents who were earlier served notices.

But the exercise, which continued at Ojulari community late on Saturday, led to allegations of use of force by the Taskforce officials deployed to maintain peace and order.

Dismissing the report in its entirety, spokeswoman for the command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said police’ duty at the scene was primarily to protect lives and properties especially those of the government officials who were carrying out their legitimate duties.

She said: “The constitutional duty of the police is protection of life and property, including the lives of Public Officials at every level of Government while carrying out their lawful official duties and other responsibilities.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the demolition activity in Oworonshoki is being carried out by the Lagos State Department responsible for Urban Development and Planning in conjunction with the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences, in accordance with the law and other due processes, after several months of official notices served on both legal and illegal occupants of the affected structures, and payment of compensation to the affected occupants concluded.

“The presence of police personnel during the demolition exercise was purely to prevent any breakdown of law and order, and at no time did officers of the command engage in any act of violence, harassment, or collaboration with hoodlums as falsely reported.

“This is clearly telling falsehood to cast aspersions on the top-notch professionalism exhibited by all the police officers in the execution of their lawful duties.

“The command wishes to reiterate once again that the roles of the police in such operations are strictly to provide security coverage of the government agencies in carrying out their statutory responsibilities, and ensure that the exercise is conducted peacefully.

“Police officers were under strict instructions to act with the highest level of professionalism, strict restraint, but to be polite, civil and with utmost respect for human rights and human dignity.

“Every allegation in the report is unfounded, baseless, inaccurate and false, and should be disregarded by members of the public.

“The Lagos State Police Command under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, remains committed to upholding the rule of law, protecting lives and property, and supporting lawful government policies that promote safety, crime prevention, society orderliness, and urban development.

“Members of the public are implored to verify information before sharing and to continue to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in the collective interest of ensuring peace, development and progress in Lagos State,” Adebisi added.

  • Youths clash with police over death of kinsman in custody

Youths clash with police over death of kinsman in custody

There is palpable tension in Bende local government area of Abia State as residents and indigenes of Bende town (community hosting Bende Police Divisional Headquarters) and police personnel in the division clashed over the death of a Wisdom Akobundu in custody..

The Nation learnt in an attempt to stop the angry youths from gaining entry into the station, the police operatives resorted to shooting sporadically into the air to scare the youths away.

This forced some shop owners around the area, which also serves as the host of the Bende local government area headquarters, to close their shops abruptly.

Those waiting in front of the local government area headquarters to board vehicle to Umuahia, the state capital and other parts of the State were said to also join in scampering for safety.

Commercial and private car owners heading to the Bende local government area headquarters, using the Umuahia-Bende-Ohafia-Arochukwu Expressway were forced to use other routes to avoid being trapped in the fracas between the youths and police officers.

It was alleged the deceased was invited for questioning by a yet-to-be identified policeman over a case involving theft of property.

According to the source, who pleaded anonymous, Akobundu was accused of buying stolen property from scavengers.

It was learnt that, Akobundu died while he was being questioned during interrogation by the investigating police team.

Yet-to-be verified sources claimed that the deceased died during interrogation after the police team brutalised him, leading to his slumping in the station.

It was learnt that at first, the affected policemen thought he was pretending, but when they realised that it wasn’t a ploy, they tried to revive him but couldn’t.

It was reported that, it was at that point the police started making frantic effort to look for a medical centre but couldn’t find any.

They were said to have decided to  move him to the state capital, where he was pronounced dead at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia.

It was learnt the youths of Bende, when the news of the death of one of theirs filtered into the community,, converged and trooped to the police station demanding that the police officers involved in the death of Akobundu should be brought out.

A statement by Okorie Festus, elder brother of the deceased reads: “I, Okorie Festus, the elder brother of the late Mr. Akobundu Okorie Wisdom, speak with deep pain and anger over the cruel and conspired death of my brother in police custody.

“Evans Onyeka , a police officer, invited my brother to the Bende Police Station and he went there alive, strong, and without trouble. Hours later, we were told he was dead.

“Let it be known: the story being circulated by the police is false. My brother had never been involved in any police case or admitted to any hospital before this tragedy.

“I was called and told my brother was in police custody, but before I got there, they had already taken him to the hospital without any notice to me or any member of our family.

“More painfully, from what we’ve gathered and seen, the whole scene clearly shows that my brother, Ako, died right inside the police station before they hurriedly went to get a bus to take him to the hospital. Any attempt to twist or hide this story will not stand.

“Officer Evans and Austin, who has served in Bende for long and knows both of us very well, was there. Yet, he never called me or any of my family members. That silence is suspicious.

“We demand answers. The DPO, DCO, Inspector Evans, Austin, and every officer on duty that day must provide what killed Ako my brother, my blood, a peaceful and responsible young man.

“They should not cover this. The truth must come out, and justice must be served.”

Chairman of Bende Local Government Area, Hon. Deacon Uwabunkonye Bassey, in a statement expressed deep shock and sadness over the death of Mr Akobundu, who he disclosed hailed Ozuitem (a community in Bende LGA), but residing in the Bende community, Bende LGA.

According to Bassey, preliminary reports, have it that the late Akobundu was said to have been accused and subsequently invited to the Bende Police Station for questioning.

“Sadly, according to the officers present, during the course of the interrogation, he reportedly slumped and, despite being rushed to a hospital in Umuahia, was confirmed dead by medical personnel.

“The news of his death, which broke on Friday night, has thrown the entire Bende community into mourning and sparked protests on Saturday from aggrieved family members and residents, who are demanding a thorough investigation and justice for the deceased.”

Chimezie Princewill Okezie, special adviser on Media and Publicity to the Mayor reports that upon receiving the distressing report, Mayor Bassey immediately rushed to the Bende Police Station to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.

He was later joined by the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Danladi Isa, as both officials assessed the situation and engaged with officers and community representatives to ensure transparency and accountability in the matter.

Speaking during his visit, the Mayor sympathised with the bereaved family and the entire Bende community over the tragic loss.

He described the death of Akobundu as “painful”, stressing that no human being deserves to die under unclear circumstances.

Bassey with the commissioner of police, assured residents that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and that justice will be served in accordance with the law. He noted that his administration stands firmly against any form of injustice or abuse of human rights.
