    Police dismiss claims against Egbetokun, reaffirm commitment to justice

    The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports suggesting that Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun obstructed justice in a rape case involving an American citizen and an Indian national, describing the claims as untrue.

    The allegations were reportedly contained in a letter addressed to the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills, by a former senior police officer.

    However, a senior police source who spoke on Monday said there was no truth to the claims, stressing that the IGP remains committed to upholding justice and the rule of law.

    The source added that the police leadership would not be distracted by attempts to discredit the IGP, assuring that the Force remains focused on strengthening accountability, discipline, and transparency in its operations.

    The Nigeria Police further reiterated its resolve to work with local and international partners to ensure justice is served in all cases, while calling on the public to disregard unfounded allegations capable of undermining the integrity of the institution.

    Delta police begin enforcement of tinted vehicle glass regulations Thursday

    The Delta State Police Command is set to commence full enforcement of regulations on tinted vehicle glass from Thursday, October 2, 2025, in line with extant federal laws and directives.

    The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, said in a statement on Tuesday that the statewide operation would be conducted with professionalism, respect for constitutional rights, and zero tolerance for abuse.

    In the same vein, the CP Olufemi reiterated the subsisting ban on the unauthorised use of sirens and revolving/strobe lights, as well as the covering, defacing, or obstruction of number plates by private individuals and non-entitled officials.

    He said while the Command continues to enforce general traffic and safety regulations, drivers are reminded to carry their essential vehicle documents, including driver’s licence, insurance, and proof of ownership, and to cooperate courteously with officers during lawful stop-and-search procedures.

    The CP urged motorists to ensure their vehicle glass meets legal transparency standards, stressing that all unauthorised sirens and flashing lights should be removed without delay.

    Olufemi said number plates must remain clear, legible, and properly affixed at all times; no bending, flipping, tinting, covering, sticker obstruction, or any alteration that renders them unreadable is permitted.

    CP Olufemi assured residents that the clampdown was focused on the immediate stoppage of illegal sirens, unauthorized flashing lights, and tampered number plates.

    He said, “These measures are intended to curb road intimidation, strengthen deterrence, and improve public safety. Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers have been ordered to supervise field operations closely and to ensure civility and full respect for human rights in all engagements.

    “The Command encourages members of the public to comply, as defaulters will be made to face the full wrath of the law. Members of the public are also advised to report misconduct through the desk of the Complaint Response Unit, Delta State Police Command: (09155570008, 09011112311, 09064308018, 09066575187).”

    Police probe ARISE News anchor’s death in Abuja

    ARISE New Channels was thrown into mourning yesterday when a female member of staff, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, died during an armed robbery.

    The incident occurred at her residence in Katampe District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja yesterday.

    According to a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of the management of ARISE News Channel yesterday evening.

    The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the management said has, however, launched an investigation into the incident.

    Beyond the airwaves, ARISE News Channel described the 29-year-old journalist referred to as Sommie as “a lawyer who was a professional and supportive colleague and a friend to many.”

    “It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of the ARISE News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu. Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025 following an armed robbery incident in her residence in Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police.

    “Sommie, 29, was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers.

    “We extend our deepest condolences to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time. Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory.”

     We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits,” Usman-Ajayi stated.

    Also confirming the incident, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, who spoke with our correspondent said the police have started investigating the matter, adding though no arrest has been made.

    Adeh said: “yes, we (the police) are aware of the incident and we are investigating it.  Nobody has been arrested but all I can say is that we have commenced investigation”.

    Police arrest guard over alleged child abduction in Lagos

    Operatives of the Lagos Police Command have arrested a guard, Amos Kini, in connection with the abduction of a two-year-old child in the Elemoro area of Lagos.

    Kini, according to a report filed bu the toddler’s mother, allegedly absconded with him on September 21.

    The woman, who reported the incident around 11:50pm that day at Elomoro Division, said the guard also fled with their mobile phone. 

    He allegedly contacted the child’s father through the stolen phone and demanded N5 million for his release.

    Confirming the incident, the Lagos Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abimbola Adebisi, said operatives commenced investigation immediately the complaint was received, which led to the suspect’s arrest on September 23.

    “The scene was promptly visited and documented, one Aruna Dauda who stood as guarantor for the suspect before his employment, was taken in for questioning.

    “As efforts to locate the suspect intensified, the police sustained operational pressure through intelligence gathering and coordinated surveillance. This ultimately forced the suspect to release the child. However, the operatives continued their manhunt, determined to bring the perpetrator to justice.

    “On 23rd September, 2025, at about 1400hrs, operatives of the Tactical Squad (Hyena), acting on credible intelligence, successfully tracked and arrested Amos Kini at his hideout within the Elemoro area. The suspect has since confessed to the crime and remains in police custody. He will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

    “The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, strongly condemned the abduction of the innocent child, reaffirming the command’s unwavering commitment to combating all forms of violent and capital crimes in the state. 

    “He urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant, and advised members of the public to report any suspicious activities to the police through any of our emergency numbers 08063299264, 09053872208, 08087332678,” she said.

    Police refutes claim of extrajudicial killing in Benue

    The Benue State Police Command has refuted the claims of extra judicial killing of one Philip Fanen Kpentuman currently circulating on social media.

    According to a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet on Friday 26th September, 2025, the incident occurred on the 20th September 2025, at about 5:30pm when operatives of Operation Zenda, booked an armed robbery suspect named Philip Fanen Kpentuman for possible recovery of operational firearms.

    Acting on intelligence, the suspect led the operatives to a hideout at Tse-Tamen settlement, Ugondu in Makurdi local government area of Benue state where a locally made pistol with five cartridges concealed in a black nylon bag was recovered.

    The press release further stated that, upon recovery of the exhibits, the suspect requested to ease himself but instead attempted to escape from custody but was immediately rearrested with the assistance of youths in the community, who nearly lynched him for his criminal antecedents before the Police swiftly rescued him.

    Shortly after being rescued, the suspect, Philip Fanen Kpentuman (now deceased) later complained of severe body pains and was immediately rushed to Rev Fr Moses Orshio Adasu University Teaching Hospital (formally BSUTH) Makurdi where he was  confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

    His corpse has been deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

    “The Command strongly refutes the claim of extrajudicial killing and wishes to emphasise that the police actions were geared towards saving his life and therefore not responsible for his death as erroneously presented on social media while the State Criminal and Investigation Department, (SCID) is making further Investigation into the matter and further developments will be communicated in due course.

    “The Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP Emenari Ifeanyi, once again reiterates the Command’s commitment to professionalism, transparency, and accountability while urging the public to desist from spreading unverified information that could mislead the public and undermine public trust in law enforcement, as the command is doing everything to ensure a secured and peaceful Benue,” the statement read.

    Police arrest Obi’s supporter over alleged attack on Abure

    Precious Oruche, a supporter of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election has been arrested by the  Edo State Police Command.

    The  activist also known as Mama P was detained at the Edo State Police Criminal Investigation Department, in Benin.

    National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, disclosed this via a post on his  X handle yesterday.

    His word: “Mama P has been detained at state CID @ Edo State Police Headquarters, off Sapele road, Benin City.

    “I have just spoken to our legal Director to deploy lawyers to her rescue. We want more people to come for her rescue. Lawyers and all concerned should please mount immediately. We need everyone’s support for her NOW.”

    The arrest  followed allegations of an altercation between Mama P and the factional National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure.

    Unconfirmed report said she was released last night and requested to report back on Monday.

    Mama P had reportedly  accused Julius Abure’s supporters of leading an unprovoked attack on her person before and after a flight from Abuja to Benin on Friday.

    However, Abure’s supporters in a statement signed by the factional LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, accused “Mama P” of unprovoked verbal assault on Abure, before and throughout the said flight.

    Police confirm 17 boat passengers missing after hijack

    Suspected sea pirates have abducted 17 boat passengers in Calabar. 

    The passenger boat was heading from Calabar to Oron in Akwa-Ibom State, a regular sea way when the incident occured. 

    The Nation gathered the hijacked boat belongs to Sea Express Transport company, Calabar.

    The Cross River Police Command confirmed incident, stating they were abducted along the Calabar waterways.

    There were at least 30 passengers in the boat from Calabar, Cross River, to Oron, Akwa Ibom.

    Confirming the development in Calabar, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Igri Ewa, said the victims were taken to an unknown destination.

    He noted: “We are aware of the abduction  and we are making efforts to rescue the victims. At the moment, no contact has been made by their abductors, but we are on our toes to ensure they are released.”

    The Nation gathered the abductors were yet to contact the families of their victims, fuelling anxiety among loved ones with their mobile phones switched off.

    The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of six suspected cultists allegedly involved in the killing of a Police Constable, Oboh Goodluck, in Amarata community, Yenagoa, the state capital.

    Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Mr Francis Idu, also vowed that the key suspect, who was on the run and was believed to be involved in multiple cases of murder, would soon be apprehended.

    Idu, who made the vow during a ceremony in honour of the deceased constable yesterday, said the police would ensure that the key suspect and others involved in the killing face justice.

    CP Idu said: “The deceased Constable acted within the law to confront and defend the people from harm against seven hoodlums.

    “Goodluck Oboh gave his life to save the Bayelsa citizenry. If he had succeeded, he would have beaten his chest that he is a peace keeper.”

    He added that a formal request would be sent to Governor Douye Diri to make the site of his killing a monument for him to be remembered.

    The representative of the Ayadei/Oboh family, Mr. Kwokwo Robert, while appreciating the authorities of the Nigeria Police for their assistance in the final burial rites of the deceased, called for justice for their son.

    Police arrest two over abduction, murder of 10-year-old in Niger

    The Niger State Police Command has arrested two suspects linked to the abduction and killing of a 10-year-old boy, Yaseer Mustapha, in the Kwana-Mariga community.

    Police said Yaseer was kidnapped on July 24, 2025, while his guardian was on the farm.

    The abductors initially demanded ₦3.5 million but later collected ₦100,000, followed by another ₦10,000, both paid into accounts provided by the suspects. The payments were made without police involvement.

    After weeks without further communication from the kidnappers, the guardian reported the matter in September.

    The case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, which trailed and arrested 32-year-old Abdulmajid Dan-Azumi.

    His arrest led to the capture of his accomplice, 18-year-old Abdulnafiu Usman, both residents of Kwana-Mariga.

    The two confessed to killing the boy and led investigators to an uncompleted building where his decomposed body was found. The remains were released to the family for burial.

    Police spokesperson SP Wasiu Abiodun confirmed that the suspects have been charged in court. 

    He urged the public to promptly report abductions and suspicious activities to security agencies instead of negotiating with criminals.

    Cyberstalking, cyberbullying are serious crimes, police warn Nigerians

    The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed that cyberstalking and cyberbullying are grave offences punishable under the country’s laws.

    Speaking at a sensitisation programme in Akure on Wednesday, Ondo State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Olusola Ayanlade, condemned the rising misuse of social media platforms.

    He noted that the amended Cybercrime (Prohibition and Prevention) Act 2024 has expanded the scope of online offences while imposing stricter obligations on citizens.

    “Cyberstalking is the repeated use of electronic communication technologies such as emails, social media, or text messages to harass, threaten, monitor or intimidate another person,” he said.

    He added that cyberbullying, defined as the deliberate use of digital platforms to humiliate, threaten or cause psychological harm – particularly to children and young people – also falls under the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act and the Child Rights Act.

    The police spokesperson noted that under the amended law, individuals and organisations are required to report cyberattacks, intrusions, or network disruptions within 72 hours, warning that failure to comply attracts fines of up to N2 million.

    Other punishable offences, he said, include identity theft, phishing, child pornography, sending unsolicited indecent images, and promoting terrorism online.

    “It is also a crime to incite the public against government or state institutions through false online messages,” Ayanlade added.

    He urged Nigerians to exercise caution in their online engagements and to view cyber safety as part of their civic responsibility.

    “Policing is not the work of the police alone. Citizens must rise to their responsibility, speak up against crime, and support lawful authority to build a safer society,” he said.
