The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one John Samuel, a 28-year-old ex-convict and suspected armed robbery kingpin, hired assassin, and murderer, believed to be behind the violent Allen Avenue gold jewellery attack of August 18.

Police operatives tracked and apprehended Samuel in his Epe hideout on Friday, September 19, at about 2 p.m., after weeks of surveillance.

The suspect, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, was only recently released from prison after serving a six-year jail term for armed robbery. Barely a month after regaining freedom, police said he returned to crime with “even more viciousness.”

According to investigators, on August 18, Samuel allegedly shot and wounded businessman Gbenga Obama in broad daylight at Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, Ikeja. CCTV footage from the scene showed the suspect firing at the victim with an English pistol before snatching his expensive gold necklace. His accomplice reportedly waited on a motorcycle to facilitate their escape.

The victim, who sustained serious gunshot injuries, has since been treated and discharged from hospital.

In his confessional statement, Samuel admitted selling the stolen jewellery for ₦4 million, a sum police say was far below its actual market value.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohudare Jimoh, commended the gallantry of the operatives who trailed and arrested the suspect.

He assured residents that efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the gang and bring them to justice.

The Lagos Police Command has smashed a notorious criminal syndicate specialising in vandalising exotic vehicles across the metropolis, arresting its suspected kingpin, 46-year-old Jude Onouha.

According to the Command, Onouha, described as the gang leader, was arrested by police detectives after a discreet operation that trailed the syndicate’s activities.

The gang was notorious for disguising as security operatives, donning fake uniforms and using a modified Mercedes-Benz car jack crafted to resemble a firearm to deceive estate security personnel.

Once granted access into residential estates under the pretense of conducting security checks, the criminals targeted luxury vehicles including Toyota Hilux, Toyota Highlander, Lexus 650, Mercedes-Benz, and other SUVs.

They systematically dismantled and removed vital parts such as brainboxes, wiring systems, tapping glasses, side mirrors, and control devices.

Items recovered from Onouha at the point of arrest include a Mercedes-Benz car jack and a face cap bearing the inscription Special Force, which he used to perfect his disguise as a security agent.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Command, DSP Babasayi Oluseyi, said the suspect had confessed to the crime and was cooperating with detectives in their ongoing investigation. He added that efforts are underway to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang and their accomplices.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, while commending the operatives for the breakthrough, urged estate managers and residents across Lagos to be vigilant and verify the identities of individuals presenting themselves as security agents before granting them access.

“The safety and security of Lagosians remain our priority, and through vigilance, cooperation, and timely reporting, we will continue to dismantle criminal networks threatening peace in our communities,” he said.

The FCT Commissioner of Police (CP) Ajao Adewale, while briefing reporters on the incident and others on Friday said the rescue operation was part of a raid conducted in the area between September 15 and September 18.

He said the operation that led to the rescue of the victim was a life-threatening battle that involved 30 minutes of heavy gun duel between police operatives and the hoodlums.

Adewale said two members of the vigilante group were injured in the attack on Sept. 15.

He said one of the injured later died at the National Hospital, Abuja.

He stated that others involved in the operation included the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, the Rapid Response Squad Commander, and other officers.

“On Sept. 17, at about 10:32 p.m., the same group of bandits struck again at Karu, where one Nafiu Idris, a staff member of the FCTA’s Department of Urban Affairs, was abducted.

“On Sept. 18, at about 7:00 a.m., the bandits’ hideout was traced to Zinda Forest, behind the Nigerian Army Estate in Kurudu, bordering Nasarawa State.

“The gang engaged our operatives in a fierce gun battle, but our team overpowered them and three of the notorious criminals were neutralised,” he said.

The CP said the investigation revealed that the neutralised gang leader had been responsible for multiple kidnappings in Karu, Guzape, Kpobi, Army Estate, Kurudu, and several locations in Nasarawa State.

He said the gang’s planned attempt to kidnap a resident of Federal Housing Estate, Karu, on September 18 was successfully foiled.

Adewale said the command’s proactive anti-kidnapping and anti-banditry patrols were ongoing across border communities and identified hotspots.

The CP said the items recovered from the gang were two AK-49 rifles, two magazines with seven rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition and two Itel handsets.

According to him, other items recovered include two ATM cards, two lighters, assorted charms, animal horns, and a cash sum of N10,000.

Meanwhile, CP said the command’s Anti-Narcotics Unit had recorded remarkable progress in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

He said 11 notorious drug dealers were arrested in coordinated raids across identified drug black spots in the FCT.

According to him, a total of 68 bags of substances suspected to be cannabis and other illicit drugs were recovered.

Adewale said the arrests were critical in disrupting criminal supply chains, reducing the rate of drug-fueled crimes, and keeping harmful substances away from communities.

Police in Delta State have dismantled a criminal syndicate specialising in the theft of musical instruments from churches.

The State Police Command said the operation, which led to the arrest of the gang leader and another accomplice, was a result of meticulous intelligence and surveillance measures.

It said following directives from Commissioner of Police Olufemi Abaniwonda, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) initiated intelligence-led investigations.
