Police sanction eight erring officers for misconduct in Ondo

The Police Command in Ondo State says no fewer than eight officers of the command have been sanctioned for professional misconduct in the last two months.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Adebowale Lawal, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Akure on Friday.

Lawal said that the command under his leadership was adhering strictly to the professional ethics and norms of the Nigeria Police.

The Commissioner of Police explained that the sanction followed complaints received from members of the public during the period.

He noted that the command had given members of the public avenues in making complaints and showing their grievances on any erring officers and men of the command.

“We have the monitoring units. We have the provost. We have the complaint response unit (CRU).

“So, once we get complaints about any officer, that person faces it. Some have been detained while some have been queried. It depends on your rank or you face the room trial.

“As a matter of fact, we talk about it daily: corruption, extortion and illegal roadblock. We warn our men to desist from such. If you are caught, you will face the music.

“So far, so good, about eight officers of the command have been sanctioned in last two months,” he said.

Lawal, who commended the public for the command’s success in the past two months, asked the public to fill free in making their complaints known to divisional police officer, police area commander or put a call directly to him.

He urged members of public to continue to feed the command with appropriate information for safety and protection of lives and property.

According to him, he has made himself accessible to public, monitoring all officers and men closely in the command in ensuring efficiency and proficiency of policing.

He appreciated the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun for prompt salary payment of police, noting that some personnel had been promoted because of their excellent performance while some were rewarded.

Lawal added that he personally appreciated personnel that excelled in previous week during review of weekly activities.

“Just call my number and I will pick. I have asked the DPOs and Area Commanders to make their cell phone numbers known and accessible as well.

“I go out to check area commands and units because I am not an armchair commander.

“We have to lead by example and that is the mission of the IGP. So, we have to key into it: transparency, accountability, and cooperation with other agencies, which of course we are enjoying.

“There’s no rivalry, no competition,” he told NAN.

He said that comprehensive and regular stakeholders’ meeting with members of public had been a great help to the success of the command since his assumption of duty on June 30, 2025.

The CP stated that the IGP had made it as a priority to train and retrain personnel in diligent investigation and crime fighting so that there would be strong prosecution of suspects in courts.

Lawal added that the command had prepared an operation order for the ember months in ensuring that the last quarter of the year was crime-free in Ondo State.

  • Four ways to convince police you’re not a Yahoo boy

Four ways to convince police you’re not a Yahoo boy

Across Nigeria, youth profiling has become an unsettling reality. A good phone, a laptop bag, or even dressing neatly can make young people targets of suspicion. Too often, innocent citizens are subjected to harassment because they are mistaken for “Yahoo boys.”

While systemic reforms are urgently needed, individuals still need strategies for staying safe during police encounters.

Here are the following practical steps can help you demonstrate legitimacy and prevent unnecessary escalation:

    Maintain composure and courtesy
Remaining calm and respectful can de-escalate tense situations. Greet politely, respond without hostility, and avoid confrontation, no matter how unfair the circumstances feel.

    Carry proper Identification
An official ID whether national ID, driver’s license, student card, or work ID adds credibility. Lack of identification can heighten suspicion, so ensure you always have one available.

    Keep gadgets professionally organised
If your laptop or phone is central to your work, maintain it in an orderly manner. Freelancers, designers, programmers, and other professionals should keep portfolios or work samples accessible. Demonstrating genuine work helps counter baseless assumptions.

    Assert your rights with wisdom
Citizens are entitled to legal protection, including freedom from unlawful detention and unwarranted searches. However, loudly declaring these rights at a checkpoint may worsen matters. Instead, assert them calmly and, if necessary, contact a lawyer or trusted associate.

    Conclusion
Although unfair profiling remains a challenge, young Nigerians can reduce the risk of harassment by staying composed, prepared, and informed. The goal is simple: to prove legitimacy and return home safely.

  • Ex-lawmakers seek police protection

    Ex-lawmakers seek police protection

Former lawmakers in Oyo State, under the aegis of Oyo State Progressives Ex-Parliamentarians, have urged Inspector General of Police and other security agents to provide protection for a member of Oyo State House of Assembly, Ibraheem Shittu, representing Saki West State Constituency.

They said the step became necessary to protect the lawmaker from being attacked by politicians, who were not happy with him for exposing the N300 billion loan purported approved by the assembly for Governor Seyi Makinde.

The ex-legislators include Sikiru Alli, John Olaleru, former Speakers of the assembly; Olagunju Ojo, Asimiyu Alarape,

Mogaji Adigun, Ahmed Murphy, Elder Adegboyega Abioye, Fatai Salaam, Afeez Adeleke, D. A. Lawal, Dr. Mathew Oyedokun, Hazmat Ogunsola, a member from the Third Republic, Mrs. Ramata Okemakinde and others.

Speaking at an emergency meeting in Ibadan, the Chairman of the forum, Ibrahim Bolomope, said they were constrained to address the matter because of the concern of the loan to the people of Oyo State, particularly Shittu.

He said: “We members of Oyo State Progressives Ex-Parliamentarians consisting of former members of Oyo State House of Assembly have met and deliberated on the revelation made by  Shittu Ibrahim representing Saki West State Constituency.

“We looked into the fact of the matter, its merit and demerit and came to the conclusion that we have to applaud Shittu for representing the state very well, not just his own constituency. As former lawmakers, we know the House of Assembly can approve loans for the executive, but when they are doing that they must follow the rules of the game.

“In this instance, the house cannot sit and approve loan for the governor without having a two third majority of members of the assembly at the sitting for fiscal matters or in some instances, at least they must have a simple majority of the members of the house.

“Now, our concern and from our experience as former lawmakers, when somebody comes out to reveal the truth, especially in our environment where truth is difficult to get by, anybody that says the truth is prone to danger.

“This is the reason we call on the Inspector General of Police and other sister security agents to provide security for our brother and colleague, Shittu and others that share a similar view with him in the assembly.

“We believe if this is done, security agencies would have proved to Nigerians that people that have information that will expose the ills and corruption in the society that will assist the common man will have the courage to come out and inform the public.”
