  • Police warn rumour mongers

    Police warn rumour mongers

Enugu State Police Commissioner Emmanuel Ojukwu has warned those he said are spreading the rumour of impending attack of some communities to desist or face the wrath of the law.

The police chief said there was no truth in the rumour.

A statement yesterday in Enugu by police spokesman Ebere Amaraizu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), quoted Ojukwu as saying that anybody found to be spreading the rumour would be prosecuted.

The statement followed a report that suspected Fulani herdsmen were planning to attack some communities in Enugu State.

Describing the reports as a rumour, it said such rumours were capable of causing panic and fear among law-abiding residents.

The statement assured that various measures had been put in place for the safety and security of communities through partnerships with stakeholders to ensure peace across the state.

“Rumour-mongering creates fear and panic in the minds of people, even when there is nothing to fear. The command is ready to ensure the safety and security of the people,” it said.

  • Why we raid late night food joints, by police chief

THERE is nothing unusual about raiding late night food joints, Police chief Fatai Owoseni has said.

Those joints, he said, have been discovered to be armouries for criminals.

It was gathered that guns and other dangerous weapons have been recovered from some late night food sellers who confessed to be members of armed robbery gangs.

Owoseni made the clarification following last week’s arrest of Sango Svengali and his friend by policemen attached to a road side food joint in Surulere, Lagos Mainland.

Svengali had taken to social media to decry how they were arrested and detained after they could not bribe the police; labelled as fanatics and forced to shave their beards.

According to Owoseni, the Area Commander, Tajudeen Bakare, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), has denied ordering anyone to shave their beards, insisting his the victims were never brought before him.

He said: “We have been investigating the matter and I even openly chided the Area Commander but he insisted that he never gave any such orders nor called anyone a terrorist. They have also denied the allegation of extortion. But we will get to the root of the matter.

“But it must be stated clearly that during raid, the police target places that are suspected to be criminal hideouts. It is not like we are singling out food vendors.

“We have noticed over time that some of those vendors who still sell food around 1am or 2am are usually gang members or armouries for armed robbers. Some of them have been arrested and weapons recovered.

“But that does not mean we are saying people who are doing their genuine businesses should not. What we do most times is that if we suspect a place, we raid it and screen those arrested. Those with genuine reasons and means of identification are allowed to go.

“Other times, we simply advise the vendors to relocate to safer places if the areas they sell their food have been identified as criminal hideouts for their safety and those of their customers.”

The Nation gathered that a team from the Force Headquarters’ Complaint Response Unit (CRU) visited the Area Command last Thursday over the case.

It was gathered that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Surulere was questioned and cleared.

The Nation gathered that the police were yet to establish the team that arrested Svengali and his friend in the wee hours of last Wednesday.

When contacted, Svengali identified one of the policemen who arrested them as Semiu.

He insisted that they were ordered to shave their beard, adding that there were many witnesses around them.

“They have been raiding for over a week. Some people have been there (cell) for two or three days. The woman selling noodles at Ogunlana escaped the arrest but a teenage boy who helps her was arrested.

“Because we patronise her, she came to the station to explain that we were simply eating. That we weren’t doing anything else but they also threw her inside the cell.

“They did not collect any money eventually because a lawyer came for us. Initially, one of the men was pushing us to bring N10,000 each. A lot of the policemen kept threatening us that if we didn’t shave our beard totally clean, the area commander won’t let us go,” he said.

  • Family petitions police over land

The Onafonyin family of Isiu in the Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State has appealed to the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Mr. Kakwe Christopher Katso, to save it from an unprofessional and illegal investigation carried out by some policemen to pervert justice and prevent the family from reaping the fruit of its labour on its land.

In a petition, written by the solicitor to the family, Mr. Tunji Busari, dated Thursday, May 2016, sent to Mr. Katso, the family frowned at the way the policemen shoddily and maliciously handled a land matter belonging to it brought by the proprietor of a private university.

According to the petition, the way and manner the Imota Police Division carried out its investigation of the complaint of the proprietor was to obstruct the judgment creditors, which is the family, from reaping the fruit of the judgment delivered by Hon. Justice H.A.O. Abiru of High Court of Lagos State, Ikorodu Judicial Division, dated September 11, 2008 in favour of the Onafonyin  family.

Mr. Busari noted that based on a ruling empowering the judgment creditors to take possession of the land dated May, 19 2015, the family engaged the services of surveyors to conduct the perimeter survey of the said land adjudged to belong to the family.

He said, to his dismay, when the surveyors mobilized their men to work on the said parcel of land, the university’s men came with the police to arrest “our clients, workers and surveyors on site.”

“On getting to the Imota Police Station, our clients’ men were directed to vacate the said parcel of land within five days, otherwise our clients and their workers shall be dealt with brutally without even considering the fact that our clients had a judgment declaring them owners of the said parcel of land absolutely.”

According to the family solicitor, the action of the proprietor of the university with full support and assistance of the police was a gross violation of the principle of law and contempt of law “but our clients being law-abiding citizens decided that the matter be investigated by your honourable office which is full of capable and proficient force men an investigators into this matter.”

In the light of this, the family appealed to Mr. Katso to use its good offices to wade into this matter “to save our clients from being the victims of an inept, unprofessional and illegal investigation”.
