Housewife demands justice for alleged police eviction, harassment

A woman is demanding justice after some policemen acting on ‘Court order’, stormed her home and forcibly evicted them.

But it turned out that the said court order was implemented on the wrong house, at which point, most of their properties have been allegedly damaged.

The incident occurred on 21, Akintunde Street, Onike, Yaba at about 11:30am last Thursday.

Mrs Medina Billy, a mother of two, who took to social media to complain about the lawlessness in the country, said about 30 policemen and 25 touts stormed her home not willing to listen to the occupants.

“I was in my flat on the penthouse when one of the policemen ordered I should come down that there is a problem. I asked, they did not explain what the problem was but they insisted I come downstairs. Upon coming downstairs, the policeman said they have an order from Lagos High Court to take possession of our residence.

“I asked them I needed to go upstairs and contact the landlord so that they can speak with him to clarify the issue. As I was going upstairs, about four policemen and up to 10 touts followed me right into my sitting room. I was confused. Before I could find my phone and put a call through to my husband to contact the landlord, they started carrying my property and throwing them through the veranda downstairs.

“I was carrying my one-year-old baby who had started wailing in fright in all the confusion. I did not have enough credit on my phone at the time so I begged one of the policemen to use his phone and he refused flatly. I managed to get one of the touts to use his phone.

“I called my husband and handed the phone to one of the policemen who did not allow him to speak only telling him in a very rude manner that they have an order from the court. The landlord also called in and engaged the policemen that they must be in the wrong property as he holds a court settlement of almost 20 years ago on the property.

“They shouted him down on the phone and continued throwing our things out which damaged most of my property. Imagine throwing wall AC and CD deck down a two storey building! My sitting room chairs were hauled from that height as well.

“Eventually, my landlord succeeded in getting his lawyer to contact the plaintiff’s lawyers (Ayinde Sanni & Co) to cross check their books and be sure they sent the policemen and thugs to the right property. They must have realised their mistake and contacted the policemen and thugs who have already vandalised our property and traumatised us by locking us and our property outside the gate.

“They now came back to open the gate without an apology and shouted we may go back in. Some of the touts now said we should pay them to pack our things back in.

“When we started expressing our frustration and shouting at them that President Muhammadu Buhari must hear this, some of the thugs came back again to throw us out and said we should call President Buhari while the policemen looked on without doing anything! They later opened the gate after they have made sure we were intimidated and left,” she said.

Continuing, the angry woman said a lot of their properties were damaged and some things were missing in their home.

She decried the manner with which the policemen conducted themselves, describing it as horrible and disgraceful.

According to her, the whole operation was evidence that there’s no law in the country, wondering how law enforcement officers will, without remorse, treat citizens in such a manner.

“Attempts to take the pictures of the policemen were met with violence and threats. We are currently speaking to our lawyers as we must get justice for this carelessness by the lawyers of the plaintiffs and the policemen and the inhumane treatment meted on us.

“There is no law in this country anymore. Before, I was explaining to them that they came to the wrong house because we have two House 21 in our street, but they didn’t listen. I said to myself: Where is the law in the country since police that were meant to support and protect the citizens of this country were the ones pointing guns at the citizens?”

Parading the criminals, spokesman of the command, Ahmad Muhammad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said Tamuno, leader of the dreaded Iceland cult group and his members have long terrorised the area with their criminal activities, including kidnapping and collecting of huge ransom from  innocent residents,  including their own relatives.

According to Muhammad four AK-47 rifle and hundreds rounds of live ammunitions were recovered from them.

He assured that peace and tranquility have returned to the area since their arrest and residents could now sleep with their two eyes closed.

He said, the Police last month arrested 70 suspected kidnappers, cultists and armed robbers across the state. A total of 25 of them were killed in a shootout with the Police, and 11 AK 47 rifles, 17 other assorted firearms and 480 different live ammunition recovered from the suspected criminals.

Earlier in the briefing, the Police narrated, “On April 14, 2016, a young girl of about 14 years was kidnapped while he was on her way back from Church and was taken to an uncompleted building in Elimgbu, Port Harcourt. Her captors kept her there for about four days while they were calling for ransom from her parents.

“While the kidnappers were fast asleep in the day time, the girl saw a ladder and used it to scale through the fence and escaped. She walked through the forest till she began to hear sound of vehicle and traced it to the road where she waved a vehicle to stop.

“The driver stooped and she told the driver that she escaped from kidnappers’ den and would want to contact her father, who is a pastor in Bayelsa State.

“The Good Samaritan called the victim’s father who directed that she be taken to any nearby Police station. Before then, the kidnappers had already called the victim’s demanding N10 million ransom. They equally forwarded an account detail to the victim’s father.

“One of the kidnapers (Godwin Pina) went to the bank immediately he noticed that the sum of N50, 000 had been paid into the account for the upkeep of their victim, pending when the ransom demanded would be raised. Before then, the police ensured that the account was blocked. He was arrested at the bank.

“When the suspect was arrested, he then opened up that their boss, Mitchel was staying in Okrika. Then the Anti-kidnapping unit moved to Abam in Okrika and arrested Mitchel and 10 other boys in his house. Two AK 47 rifles were recovered from him. On interrogation, he (Mitchel) said he had other two AK 47 rifles with one Iyalla Appolos somewhere in Ozuboko area of Abuloma, in Port Harcourt City local Government Area of the state. We moved in there and Iyalla was arrested and the two AK 47 rifles were recovered from him.

“Muhammad continued, Pina confessed that the kidnap gang also planned and executed a female oil mogul in the same Abuloma area and collected N9 million ransom.

“They also disclosed that Mitchel’s Toyota Camry was always used to move their kidnap victims, including one Chief Ajie from Abuloma and Pina’s Uncle’s wife also. • Imo police smoke out suspects from hideout

Imo police smoke out suspects from hideout

Such was the drama that on Monday when some suspected criminals met their waterloo in Owerri, the Imo State capital, the state Commissioner of Police Taiwo Lekanu and Deputy Governor Eze Madumere were in charge of the operation.

Lekanu and Madumere saw it all as they led a detachment of policemen into the suspects’ den.

The operation brought great relief to residents of the popular Douglas Street and traders at the busy Ekeonunwa in Owerri.

    About 50 suspects were  arrested.

Prior to the raid, a dreaded drug ring and cult groups operated freely from the hideout, robbing residents and traders at gun point, raping women and sometimes hacking their victims to death in broad daylight.

In the popular market, all manner of fraud was also perpetrated by fake prophets, magicians, conmen and other criminal elements who took advantage of unsuspecting people coming to the market from the villages.

In the last one year, over 13 cult-related killings have been recorded in the area. Rival cult groups frequently clashed in the market where they came to buy hard drugs which included cocaine, heroin and Indian hemp, among others.

But determined to rid the state of all forms of criminality, the Commissioner of Police and the Deputy Governor stormed one of the hideouts along Douglas Road.

At the uncompleted building,  scores of women have been reportedly raped, while all manner of hard drugs were consumed and sold openly.

Over 50 suspects who are currently standing trial were arrested on the premises in previous raids.

Items recovered included large quantity of cocaine, Indian hemp, female bags suspected to have been stolen from rape victims and other items.

The Commissioner of Police warned that there will be no hiding place for criminal elements in any part of the state, while assuring that the command will sustain the current onslaught against criminals in the state.

The Deputy Governor who expressed shock at the volume of hard drugs and other dangerous items recovered from the single raid, said that the state government will step in to ensure that the premises ceases from being used for nefarious activities.

He promised further that the state government will continue to support and collaborate with the police command in the fight against crime and criminality in the state.

  • Police love for abandoned children

    Police love for abandoned children

Abia State Commissioner of Police Joshak Habila’s gifts lift the spirits of administrators and inmates of an abandoned children’s home in Aba, Abia State, reports SUNNY NWANKWO

History was made on Monday in Aba, Abia State’s commercial heart. The state Commissioner of Police Joshak Habila visited a facility in the city where the Reverend Dr. Joy Igweze has been looking after abandoned children for 10 years. He came with a huge of daily needs and lots of love.

Since it was founded, the Peace Sisters Outreach Ministry International has been running on government’s handouts and public charity. No commissioner of police in the state had ever visited the facility. Habila’s is therefore monumental, more so when it was accompanied with just what the home needed: love and supplies.

Inmates of the home were mostly picked up from the streets where they were abandoned by their parents, especially mothers. Some of those mothers were themselves pushed out of their matrimonial homes with their children. The streets therefore naturally became their first and sometimes only shelter, until Dr Igweze showed up.

Mrs Igweze caters for about 110 inmates whose age ranges from one to over 20 years.

There is something also quite remarkable about the facility. It has not been linked to any baby factory or child rituals or such other gory tales rampant in the country especially in the Southeast. Its record has been clean.

It was also an emotional event for the inmates. Unable to hide their joy, they sang melodiously to welcome and entertain their guests even as they requested for mattresses and other needs. They also prayed for the Commissioner of Police and his team, the state and the country at large.

Items donated by the CP included 10 cartons of noodles, a carton of tomato puree, three bags of rice, one carton of seasoning, cartons of beverages, jerry cans of groundnut oil, one carton of toilet tissue, salt, bread, milk and soap, among others.

The state police chief commended the founder of the home and staff for their concern in giving shelter to the homeless and  hope to the hopeless.

He said his visit relieved him of the burden he had been bearing for a long period of time.

Habila stated that his coming to the home was to urge the wealthy to use what God gave them to better the lives of others especially the downtrodden within their vicinity.

He used the opportunity to appeal to good-spirited Abians and others to come to the aid of the inmates of Peace Sisters International Ministry.

He also warned those operating illegal maternity and motherless babies homes in the state to look for legitimate jobs or face the consequence.

He also stressed that the police were on the alert to not only track down operators of such homes, but to also bring them justice.

He also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, the press and civil society groups in the country to help spread the message against people abandoning their child/children on the street, stating that if the community policing which the Inspector General of the Police, IGP Solomon Arase preaches will be imbibed by all, crime and criminality will be limited, if not eradicated in the society.

In her response, the proprietress of the abandoned children home, Dr. Rev. Mrs. Joy Igweze thanked the State Police Chief for finding time to come and visit her home and to also identify with the children in the home.

Calling for a stiffer penalty to those who gave birth and abandon their child or children on the street, Igweze lamented high level of abandoned and street children in the society by their parents and called for love among people in the society.

She said, “People who drop their child or children on the street and abandon them will definitely get their punishment, unless they repent and turn a new leaf.”

She added that they were happy to receive Habila at the home as the first Commissioner of Police in the state to visit them.

One of the inmates who spoke on behalf others, Master Samuel corroborated the position of their proprietress and solicited for more assistance from the federal, state and local government authorities including public spirited individuals and corporate organizations.

Samuel said that the Police chief’s visit will ever remain historic to the home and the lives of the inmates.

On the commissioner of Police entourage were the DPOs of Osisioma and Eziama Police Divisions; Usman and Austin, the PPRO of the state command, Ezekiel Onyeke Udeviotu, State chairman and Osisioma Police Division chairman of Police Community Relation Committee, Ambassador Emma Nwosu and Chief Amanna A. Nwaogu who also used the opportunity provided for by the visit to make some donations to the home.

  • Police drivers to pay for damage of patrol vehicles

Police drivers to pay for damage of patrol vehicles

The police, on Thursday, said it would compel officers and men of the force, who damaged patrol vehicles through reckless driving to pay for the damage.

The Zone 2 police spokesman, CSP Adebowale Lawal, made this disclosure in a chat with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Lawal said that the directive was issued by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of the zone, comprising of Lagos and Ogun State Commands, Mr Bala Hassan.

He said that the warning became necessary in view of the rickety condition of such vehicles shortly after allocation for patrol duties.

The police spokesman said that henceforth, police officers and men would be sanctioned for willful and reckless damage to patrol vehicles under their care.

“All erring drivers and patrol team leaders who are found to have willfully and recklessly damaged vehicles will be sanctioned and made to pay for the damage to government property.

“If you destroy or damage any vehicle, you will be sanctioned and made to pay for it accordingly,” Lawal said.

According to him, most vehicles recently donated to the police by State Governments and corporate bodies, undergo comprehensive maintenance every six months to ensure their road worthiness.

He said that the AIG had therefore directed that drivers and team leaders would be held responsible for any breach of the safety and care of patrol vehicles.

The Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday dismissed reports that the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Nwodibo Ekechukwu, has been sacked.

In a brief telephone conversation with our correspondent on Tuesday, the Force Spokesperson, Olabisi Kolawole, said the CP was not sacked, but redeployed elsewhere.

“No, the CP was not sacked. He was only redeployed and we didn’t issue a statement on it because it is a normal procedure in the Force.
