Anambra: Police averts bloodbath in Nnewi

Anambra State Police Command Wednesday averted what would have been a bloodbath in the commercial city of Nnewi when transporters and touts clashed.

However, minor injuries were recorded during the incidents, while two persons have been arrested following the clash.

It was during an attempt to force transporters in Nnewi, Anambra State to use a private motor park built by a businessman who claimed to have the approval of government to make other transporters use the park.

The clash between the touts and the transporters caused human and vehicular traffic even as some onlookers sustained minor injuries as they scampered for safety until the police arrived.

The Nation gathered Wednesday that the transporters bluntly resisted being forced to use the private park, arguing that they were comfortable with the way they operated.

They were using the roadside as their loading and unloading spot which they had become used to after being chased away from Nkwo Triangle motor park some years ago during the burial of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

  • Five persons killed in Rivers state

Five persons killed in Rivers state

Sitting at the Rivers state High court complex in Port Harcourt the state capital was Tuesday disrupted, following the gruesome murder of two Private security guards on duty by unknown persons, early morning Tuesday.

Also three persons were reportedly killed in Bori, the traditional headquarters of Khana, Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relation Officer, Ahmad Muhammad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the attacks in Port Harcourt the state capital yesterday.

The two Guards on night duty were reportedly murdered at the Block ‘C’ (new court building), of the court complex, while

It was not clear the time the two guards were killed, it is believed that they were killed early morning. The development crippled activities at the court complex. Courts did not sit in the complex, as police Hilux trucks and men took over the court gates.

Judiciary workers who came to work were asked to go home to allow the Police carry out investigations into the killing.

Blood splash of the killed was noticed around the Block ‘C’ environment, they apparently struggled with their killers.

Mohammad said no police officer was killed in any of the attacks, but noted that the police have beefed up security in the areas, to forestall further attacks.

The Chief Security Officer (CSO), of the complex Tabo-Tubor Douglas corroborated the Police over the alleged killing of Police officers in the attack.

Douglas debunked the media report earlier that Police officers were killed in the attack and that the victims died of gun shots.

He appealed to media men to always cross check their reports before going on air to so that they will not mislead the public.

he said, “I want to appeal to the members of the media to always verify the source of their news, before going on air. “There was no gunshot anywhere in this premises last night. No Policeman was killed, instead it was our people that were killed, two security men while the third person was injured and is presently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

“This place was as calm as every other place last night.”

“We came to work this Tuesday morning to discover that Police officers have taken over the gates of the court complex. On inquiry, we discovered that two of my security men have been killed and their corpses found within the premises.

    “Nobody knows who killed them.”

Asked the time he resumed work yesterday to discover what happened said, “I resumed work by some minutes past 6: am. The Police had already taken over the complex and the victims had already been killed before then. Nobody can for now tell the actual time the attack took place last Tuesday morning but it had happened before we resumed work this (yesterday), morning,” he said.

According to him, apart from the people that were killed, no office was tampered with neither was anything taken away from the complex.

He disagreed with the rumour that the attack may not be unconnected with the suspected resumption yesterday,  of the on-going trial of the three suspected killers of a militant Leader, Sogboma George, which was to come up in one of the high courts in the complex Tuesday.

In his views, the matter has been going on in the premises in the past four years, without any turmoil, he wondered why anybody could believe that yesterday’s sitting should be the reason for attacking innocent person on their legitimate duty posts.

“Please Sogboma matter has been on in this court premises for more than four years now, the sittings have been very peaceful, people should stop saying what they do not know and allow the police to carry out their investigations.”

He denied knowledge of whether the case was supposed to come up in the court yesterday. “Even at that, the people have been coming here for the matter without any problems. I believe somebody decided to do this to create scene.” He said.

He assured that courts will resume sitting Wednesday.

  • Lawyer writes police over ‘harassment’ of bailiff

A lawyer, Dania Abdullahi, has urged the Assistant Inspector-General of Police AIG), Zone Two, Onikan in Lagos to transfer a case-file on a tenancy dispute to another police division.

Abdullahi said his client, a senior bailiff/sheriff of the Federal High Court, Ernest Nwanoro, was asked to quit his 21, Ajoke Okunsanya Street, Ago Palace Way, Okota residence.

According to him, before the notice expired, some policemen from the Ago Police Division, stormed Nwanoro’s premises and disconnected his power and water supply and barricaded the entrance.

Abdullahi said the house is owned by a former Comptroller of Customs, Chief John Ogundoju, but managed by his daughter and husband, Mr and Mrs Eniafe Adeola through an agent, Lanre.

The lawyer said on April 28, at about 10pm, Nwanoro got a call from Lanre to report at the police station.

The following day, he accompanied his client to the station to see the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO), who was away.

According to him, on May 3, his client got a call from the DCO asking him to report at the station without fail.

Abdullahi said he tried calling the DCO to know why his client was wanted, but was not given a reasonable explanation.

The lawyer said a tenancy dispute was a civil matter that should not warrant intimidation by the police.

Alleging that the DCO may have been compromised, Abdullahi said the case file should be transferred from Agor Police Division for a discreet, unbiased and fair investigation.

The lawyer said the DCO allegedly “descended into the arena” and should, therefore, be reminded about what the law says on tenancy agreements.

Abdullahi said his client, who was forced to relocate his family, did not commit any offence to be treated like a criminal.

  • Update: Police detain alleged wife killer in Panti

Update: Police detain alleged wife killer in Panti

The Lagos State Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni had ordered that alleged wife killer, Lekan Shonde be detained at the homicide unit, State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti-Yaba.

Owoseni gave the order Monday after the Commander Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Tunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police  (ACP) took the suspect to the command’s headquarters.

Shonde was alleged to have beaten his wife, Ronke Shonde to death on Thursday night, after which he ‘fled’, locking their two kids in the house with the deceased’s corpse on the ground.

The suspect, who has since been hiding, was said to have shuttled Cotonou, Benin Republic, Badagry and Ondo State since Friday.

It was gathered that he was convinced to come back to Lagos from Ondo State on Sunday night, where he had planned to flee the country from.

Shonde, it was gathered cried severally, insisting that he did not kill his late wife.

Although the police shielded Shonde from journalists, his friends, Sunday Nwobi and Gbenga Sholuki, who claimed to have known the suspect for decades, said he has never been a violent person.

They claimed that the suspect loved his wife so much that the family’s income was kept in her custody.

“At the moment he has nothing because even the money he makes was kept in an account the wife has access to. Even the ATM card is with her. Everything was under her. That’s how much he loved her,” they claimed.

According to Nwobi, he has been the suspect’s friend for 33 years, they both attended Ikeja High School, but he was a class ahead of Shonde.

“He has never been violent. I have known him for the past 33 years and I can tell you that he is a gentleman. He was in the same class with my immediate younger brother who has just returned from the United States because of this matter.

“He attended Ikeja High School. I have been in touch with him since the ugly incident and he sent me over 70 messages threatening to commit suicide.

“He told me he had quarrel with his wife on alleged infidelity. He said his wife confessed she has man friend, at her place of work.

“Lekan told me that he caught his wife talking to the man on phone and that she went to Abuja with her lover and they spent five days together.

“As the wife was confessing and begging him, he said he pushed her aside and went into the room to sleep. That he didn’t talk to her nor touch her because he was angry.

“Since he usually left the house early (5am) for work every day and returns around 8pm, he said he left that day as usual and that their eight-year-old son was the one who bolted the door, while he used his own key to lock the gate as usual.

“Lekan told me that he never knew anything has happened to his wife until he was called by his landlady on phone. That his landlady told him his wife had died and that he was a suspect. He said his landlady’s daughter also called him.

“He was on his way to the house but different people called and told him to run because police were in his house and they were looking for him as the suspect. That was why he fled.

“But as soon as he contacted me that same day, I kept telling him to come out. His aged father also told him to turn himself in and allow the law to run its course,” he said.

Similarly, Sholuki, who’s Executive Director, Campaign against Impunity and Domestic Violence said he came out for Shonde because he believed in him.

“Even as we were coming to the police command, he has spoken with his mother-in-law to notify her that he has surrendered. The woman told him that he has done very well for her family and that though they were pained, they have forgiven him and he should not think of suicide again.

“He also called his wife’s lover and told him he hoped he was happy now that he has destroyed his home. The man begged for forgiveness.

“When information came to us about what has happened, we told him to come out for the law to take its course. We have known him for a long time and he is not a violent person.

“We want justice. We are demanding a medical examination to ascertain what really happened. He is a family man. He cherishes his wife and says very pleasant things about her. All we want is justice. If scientific evidence proofs he killed his wife, then, he should go in for it. But what we do not like is his being condemned even before autopsy result comes out,” said Sholuki.

Confirming that the suspect was in police custody, Owoseni said an autopsy will ascertain the cause of death, adding that the police was yet to interrogate Shonde.

“As you can see, he has just been brought in. It is still an allegation and the police is not the court of law to pronounce anyone guilty or otherwise.

“He has turned himself in. I confirm he is in our custody. We will ensure we get to the root of the matter.

He shall be interrogated and investigation is ongoing. We cannot say for sure what happened but autopsy report will prove cause of death,” he said.
