    Six dead, many injured, 14 vehicles burnt in Abuja accident– Police

    The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Police Command has confirmed that six persons died while fourteen vehicles were burnt in vehicle accidents.

    Police said the accident occurred when a Dangote trailer, heavily loaded with cement and approaching Nyanya Bridge from AYA, lost control and crashed into stationary vehicles trapped in traffic.

    The remains of the six victims, police said have been deposited at the Karu General Hospital mortuary.

    The fire occurred around 7.14 pm on Wednesday.

    A statement by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josphine Adeh said: “The FCT Police Command deeply regrets to confirm a devastating motor vehicle accident that occurred today, March 19, 2025, at about 6:58 PM before Nyanya Bridge.

    “A distress call was received by Karu Division reporting a horrifying scene—a Dangote trailer, heavily loaded with cement and approaching Nyanya Bridge from AYA, had lost control and crashed into stationary vehicles trapped in traffic.

    “The impact engulfed fourteen vehicles in a raging inferno. Panic and chaos followed as bystanders and motorists scrambled for safety. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, battling thick smoke and intense heat to rescue those trapped.

    “Six victims were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital, but tragically, they were confirmed dead by medical personnel on duty. Their remains have been deposited at Karu General Hospital Morgue”.

    Adeh said Police operatives, in collaboration with fire service personnel, other security agencies, and courageous individuals at the scene, contained the inferno, and normal traffic flow had been restored.

    She said: “The FCT Police Command extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and assures the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the cause of this disaster and prevent future occurrences.

    “Members of the public are strongly urged to exercise caution and adhere to speed limits while driving, especially in high-traffic areas. Safe driving habits can prevent tragedies like this and save lives.

    The Ag. Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Department, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed has commiserated with the victims and families affected by the tragic truck fire incident at Karu bridge, along Keffi road in the FCT.

    According to Head, Public Affairs, FCT Emergency Management Department, Nkechi Isa, Preliminary reports indicate that the incident was caused by an open-body trailer powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).  

    She said some of the victims were taken to the National hospital, Asokoro Hospital, State House clinic, Custom hospital and Nyanya General hospital for treatment.

    Meanwhile, she said Engr Abdulrahman Mohammed has urged all drivers to exercise caution on the roads and obey traffic rules and regulations to prevent similar occurrences.

    The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has confirmed six deaths and the burning of 14 vehicles in an accident that occurred in the Nyanya area of Abuja.

    This was stated in a press release by the FCT command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, on Thursday in Abuja.

    Adeh said that the accident involved a Dangote trailer heavily loaded with cement, which occurred at about 6:58 p.m. on Wednesday.

    She explained that the trailer, approaching Nyanya Bridge from AYA, lost control and crashed into stationary vehicles trapped in traffic.

    “The impact ignited a raging inferno, engulfing 14 vehicles. Panic and chaos ensued as bystanders and motorists scrambled for safety.

    “Emergency responders rushed to the scene, battling thick smoke and intense heat to rescue those trapped.

    “Six victims were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital, but tragically, they were confirmed dead by medical personnel on duty,” she said.

    Adeh added that the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at Karu General Hospital Morgue.

    She, however, noted that police operatives, in collaboration with fire service personnel and other security agencies, successfully contained the fire.

    The command’s spokesperson confirmed that normal traffic flow had been restored in the area.

    She extended the command’s deepest condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public that a thorough investigation was underway to determine the cause of the accident and prevent future occurrences.

    Adeh urged the public to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and practice safe driving, especially in high-traffic areas, as such measures could prevent tragedies and save lives.

    Police burst kidnap syndicate, rescue foreign national

    Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police operatives from the Durumi Division have rescued Sambo Umar Labibo, a citizen of Burkina Faso, from the clutches of a notorious kidnap syndicate operating within the Durumi IDP Camp.

    His abductors, police said, forced him to call a close associate, demanding a ransom of fifteen million naira (₦15,000,000).

    According to a statement issued on Wednesday, by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josphine Adeh: “On March 18, 2025, at about 3:05 PM, the Durumi Divisional Headquarters received an urgent report that Sambo Umar Labibo had been kidnapped since March 14, 2025.

    “Upon receiving this intelligence, Police operatives swiftly mobilized and launched a meticulous operation. With strategic planning and close collaboration with the victim’s associate, the operatives tactically set a trap for the kidnappers. As the suspects arrived at the designated ransom collection point, they were swiftly apprehended before they could make an escape.

    “The arrested suspects include: Ibrahim Umar, Hamza Buba, Muktar Mohammed, Masaud Abdullahi, Moses Idoko – the gang’s medical director, responsible for providing medical care to both suspects and victims.

    “Following their arrest, the suspects led the Police operatives to their hideout within the Durumi IDP Camp, where the victim was found and rescued unharmed. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to apprehend other fleeing members of the syndicate.

    “This successful operation underscores the unwavering commitment of the FCT Police Command in dismantling criminal networks and ensuring that all residents—both citizens and foreigners—are safe within the nation’s capital.

    Police deny land dispute killings in Ebonyi 

    The Police command in Ebonyi on Tuesday said it has not received any report of two persons killed in an alleged renewed land dispute in the state.

    Police Spokesman, SP Joshua Ukandu, stated this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki.

    He confirmed that the command has yet to receive any formal report concerning the incident.

    NAN recalls that Umuobor in Akaeze and Ogwor in Ishiagu, both in Ivo Local Government Area, have long clashed over a disputed land.

    Many lives have been lost, with properties worth billions of naira destroyed in the protracted conflict.

    Gov. Francis Nwifuru declared the disputed land a buffer zone and formed a committee to find a lasting solution to the crisis.

    Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested two suspected kidnappers, Ridwan Salisu, 45 and Umar Isyaku, 19, with N3.6million.

    Both suspects, however, claimed the money was for their PoS business.

    Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, who briefed reporters, said Salisu claimed the money was for PoS operation.

    Afolabi said two motorcyclists, who acted as spies for kidnappers as well as provided logistics for them, had been arrested.

    The motorcyclists are LekanTemitope (a.k.a Legelege) and Komolafe Sunday, popularly known as Veego.

    Komolafe reportedly confessed to having helped kidnappers get food for their victims while in custody and received money based on the number of people kidnapped.

    He led operatives to Akunu-Akoko, where two suspects, Umaru Abubakar Sanda and Yusuf Ahmadu, were arrested.

    Police said Abubakar confessed to be the one who guards victims in the forest when they were brought to base.

    Afolabi said the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had approved technical equipment for Ondo to tackle kidnappings and other crimes.

    He said Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had also promised to provide equipment and logistics to win the war against kidnappers.

    Also, the House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to take action following the attacks on communities in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State by suspected armed herdsmen.

    Raising the matter as one of urgent public importance on the floor of the House yesterday, Abiodun Derin Adesida, lamented the scale of killings and kidnappings in Igbatoro Familugba and surrounding communities.

    Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have arrested individuals involved in drug supply to bandits, arms smuggling, drug trafficking, and currency counterfeiting, including a female gunrunner.

    According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the arrests were carried out by various tactical teams, including the Force Intelligence Department-Special Tactical Squad (FID-STS).

    Among those apprehended were Alhaji Usman Yahaya (50), Joseph Matthew (27), and Solomon Bala (25), all residents of Potiskum, Yobe State. 

    They were caught transporting 30 cartons of codeine syrup and other hard drugs within the area.

    The suspects confessed that the drugs were meant for bandits, Boko Haram insurgents, and kidnappers operating in Yobe State and neighboring countries.

    The statement reads in part: “On December 23, 2024, at about 5:50 PM, operatives of FID-STS intercepted one Hauwa Sani, a 30-year-old female resident of Doro village, along the Keffi/Abuja Expressway. She was found in possession of 124 rounds of live ammunition of various calibres, concealed inside a 5-litre container of palm oil. 

    “She confessed that one Nasiru of Daura tasked her to deliver the ammunition to Katsina State. Further Investigations have led to several other recoveries and arrests that are undergoing profiling. Citizens are urged to be wary and remain conscious of the antics of these smugglers. Suspicious items should be reported immediately to the appropriate authorities.

    “Furthermore, on February 3rd, 2025, operatives of FID-STS, apprehended one Yusuf Dantani ‘m’ 24 yrs, Usman Labaran ‘m’ 32 yrs, and Musa Mohammed ‘m’ 23 yrs with 10 AK-47 rifles. The suspects upon interrogation confessed to being involved in several arms deals, receiving the sum of Three Million Nine Hundred and Eighty Thousand Naira (N3,980,000) for the last batch of arms they were supposed to trade.

    “These successful operations highlight the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to proactively combat crime, disrupt criminal networks, and ensure the safety and security of all citizens. The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in its efforts to dismantle criminal enterprises and bring perpetrators to justice. We urge the public to continue to support our efforts by providing timely and accurate information that can aid in crime prevention and detection.”

    The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation into the circumstances that caused the inferno at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) operated Trans Niger Delta Pipeline, located at the border of Kpor and Bodo communities.

    A statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP. Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that during a routine night patrol, security operatives observed the incident and promptly alerted SPDC management. 

    Iringe-Koko, who also confirmed that two persons were arrested in connection with the incident, said the oil firm latter initiated necessary safety protocols, including shutting down the affected pipeline

    The statement said: “As a result of swift intervention, the situation is now under control, and there is no further threat to residents or the environment.

    “The Rivers State Police Command has commenced a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire. In connection with this, two individuals have been taken in for questioning as part of efforts to uncover any potential act of sabotage.

    Kidnapping for ransom has been on the rise in Ondo State especially in Akure North local government area.

    A farmer, Olanrewaju Oyeleye, who paid N25m as ransom, said the kidnappers have a vast network providing supplies for them inside the forest.

    Ondo Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, who briefed Journalists on the successes recorded in tackling kidnappers, said Salisu claimed the money found on the for POS operation.

    Afolabi said two motorcyclists who acted as spies for Ondo kidnappers as well as provided logistics for them have been arrested.

    The motorcyclists were identified as LekanTemitope a.k.a legelege and Komolafe Sunday popularly known as Veego.

    Komolafe reportedly confessed to have helped kidnappers get food for their victims while in custody and received money based on the number of people kidnapped.

    Also, a notorious vandal, Samuel Friday, who has been jailed three times for vandalising electrical installations, has heen re-arrested.

    Police said Samuel was caught vandalising transformer along Ilu-Abo, Ogbese area of Ondo State.

    According to Afolabi: “He confessed to have been vandalising electrical transformer since 2016 and that he has been jailed three times before he was finally released in 2018. 

    “He confessed he do sell stolen electrical cables removed from uncompleted/abandoned buildings to one Alhaji Abubakar A.k.a Abu Shisha and one Alhaji SheuSabo residing in Akure, Ondo State

    “Efforts are ongoing to arrest the receivers.”

    Afolabi said the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has approved technical equipment for Ondo State to tackle kidnappings and other crimes.

    The Police Service Commission (PSC) yesterday approved the promotion of 66 senior police officers to various ranks.

    This move aims to strengthen the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and recognise the outstanding performances of its officers.

    Twenty senior officers were promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs).
