Policeman in detention for allegedly ‘killing’ Aba resident

A Policeman said to be serving under Aba Central Police Station (CPS), identified as Chinedu Ibe is currently cooling off his feet at the detention facility of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of Abia Police Command in Umuahia, the state capital for allegedly killing an Aba resident.

The victim identified as Mr. Chinedu Peter, from Anambra State was said to have been killed by Ibe while on a routine patrol with members of his team in front of Christ the King Cathedral Catholic (C.K.C) along Asa road.

While a report has it that the body of the deceased was dumped in a secluded part of the commercial town, another account has it that the victim died at a private hospital along Aba-Owerri road where he was taken to for medical attention.

A relative to the deceased family who pleaded anonymity said that they knew about the death of their brother a day after the incident and accused the police of trying to sweep the matter under the carpet.

According to the relative, “on March 11, he was coming back home with his girlfriend and other passengers in a commercial bus when policemen on duty in front of C.K.C stopped their vehicle and ordered them to come out from the bus. They complied and were asked to lie down on the main road which they equally did.

“After a while, the officers asked an Hausa man who was with the passengers to go. That action by the policemen angered Peter who confronted them to know why they should allow only one person amongst the passengers to go. It was at the heat of the argument that the police officer shot at him, leaving him in the pool of his blood. The police officers, we learnt later took his corpse to an unknown destination. But his girlfriend who observed the gruesome killing of her boyfriend and our brother reported the matter to us.

“Complain was lodged at the Aba Central Police Station where the policemen were said to be serving, but they denied having knowledge of the incident. The matter was further reported to the office of the Aba Area Commander (ACP, Peter Wagbara) who through later ordered that the policemen on duty that night should come to his office. It was at the Area Commander’s office that Peter’s girlfriend identified her boyfriend’s killer. The Area Commander ordered that the killer police officer should be detained, but we later learnt that they (police) were treating the matter with kid gloves and making attempt to sweep it under the carpet. But after a rigorous and stressful search operation by family and friends, his (Peter’s) body was found on March 18.”

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Geoffrey Ogbonna couldn’t be reached for comments, but a source in Aba Area Command confirmed that incident and however debunked that Peter was intentionally killed by the cop.

According the source, the policeman accidentally shot at the victim who was said to be alighting from a cab while aiming at the tyre of a fleeing vehicle.

Contrary to the claim that the corpse of the victim was dumped at unknown location, the source told our correspondent that the victim was rushed to a private hospital within the city center where he died while receiving medical attention and stated that family members of the victim have met severally with the police to see how they can fashion out amicable way of settling the matter.

The officer who shot the victim is right now in Umuahia at the State CID office where he is undergoing interrogation and may soon be charged to court at the completion of the investigation.

Police arrest man for ‘dehumanising’ employee

Operatives of the Metro Police and Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested an engineer, Wole Odunuga, who allegedly tied his employee and locked him inside Hilux Van marked SMK 707 CA enroute Abuja.

The suspect was arrested Wednesday night around 7-Up by the Alausa Tollgate, after policemen chased him from Ketu/Ojota Flyover for refusing to stop.

Odunuga was said to be a lone traveler, whose refusal to obey the policemen, propelled them to check his vehicle when it was forcefully stopped.

According to the police, the officers were shocked to see the victim, Daniel Dabis, at the trunk of the white Hilux, with his legs and hands tied to his back.

Upon interrogation, the suspect was said to have claimed that Dabis stole his money at Abuja and absconded to Lagos, adding that he was taking him back to Abuja to answer for his offence.

He said: “I have been searching for him all over the place, which took me to his village in Plateau State. It was one of his friends that told me he was in Lagos, where he was hiding. Precisely, I was hinted he was staying at Mile 12 Market, Ketu.

“I drove down from Abuja and I met him at Mile 12 Market, Ketu, where I picked him up. Initially, I had taken him down to Ketu Divisional Police Station, Lagos, to incident the matter, but the officers at the station declined to detain him there. “So, I had no option than to take him back to Abuja. That was what I was trying to do before I was accosted by the police team on routine patrol under the Ketu/Ojota flyover.”

However, Dabis who denied stealing the suspect’s money said he only took his ladder and barrow.

He said: “What I took from him were a ladder and a wheel barrow. He is estimating the cost of the wheel barrow at N110, 000 and the ladder, N90, 000, that is all I took from him. Because of that he tied my legs and hands to my back.

“His plan was to drive me to Abuja in that manner if not for these officers; he would have killed me and dumped my body at the road side.”

  • Mother, uncle, policeman allegedly torture teenager to death

Mother, uncle, policeman allegedly torture teenager to death

FOR six hours, 19-year-old Rilwanu Akintunde was beaten up, handcuffed and locked inside a teargassed room for allegedly stealing N90,000.
His torturers were his mother, Mrs. Akintunde, her brother Kayode and a policeman identified as Titus.
Rilwanu, alias Rado, denied collecting the money said to belong to his mother, a hawker. But his attackers didn’t believe him. Unable to bear the torture, the teenager passed out and was rushed to Beachland Hospital, Arepo, where he was confirmed dead on Sunday evening.
His torturers secretly buried him at his mother’s site at Sotel, not knowing their action would draw the wrath of residents of Oriola Street, Ibafo and environs.
Youths in the area went berserk after discovering that the money for which Rilwanu was tortured to death was later found in his mother’s closet.
Wielding cutlasses, bottles sticks and fire, the mob, it was gathered, stormed Kayode’s residence; chased the tenants away and vandalised his property.
Inscriptions, such as “Rado was a good son born by a stupid mother” were seen on walls of the building, with roofs, doors and windows destroyed.
When The Nation visited the Ogun community yesterday, residents were clamouring for justice to the culprits.
It was gathered Kayode and his police friend, Titus, had fled the neighbourhood. The deceased’s mother and Kayode’s wife were arrested by policemen from Ibafo Division, who visited the place yesterday.
According to residents, Rilwanu’s killers might have had another motive for their action because the teenager was neither a thief nor troublesome.
His friends, it was gathered, produced an obituary for him, which they pasted not far from the community mosque.
The deceased’s wife, Damilola Owoigbe, with their eight-month-old son on her arms, demanded justice.
She said: “I want those responsible for my husband’s death to be arrested and jailed for life. They killed him for nothing. Rado was never a thief. Everyone in Ibafo loved him. He was a peaceful person. He was an apprentice at a tailoring shop because he wanted to make life better for us and for his two siblings.
“Their father is dead. Their mother sells bottled water in traffic. She was the one who went and told her brother on Sunday morning that Rilwanu stole her N90,000. Then, her brother, Kayode sent his wife to call his police friend, Titus and they tortured him to death.
“I was not there. I was in my mother’s house. But I was told that the policeman brought handcuffs and teargas, which they used on him. I was also told that blood was all over his body. Now, I am confused because I don’t know who would take care of our son.”
A source, who craved anonymity, told The Nation the policeman worked at Area G Command, Ogba, Lagos.
Police spokesman, Ogun State Command Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident, but said he was unaware if Titus was a policeman.
He said: “The information I got is that the woman, the boy’s stepfather and his friend tortured him to death. They said the woman complained that her N90,000 was missing and she accused her son. Then, she told the boy’s stepfather, who sent his wife to contact a friend of his. They all tortured the boy to death and secretly buried him. The woman later saw the money.
“At the moment, the two men involved are on the run, but the women have been arrested. They have been transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID). The Police Commissioner Ahmed Iliyasu has ordered that the fleeing suspects be arrested.
“I am not aware that one of them is a policeman. But be assured that they will be fished out and dealt in accordance with the law.”
