    Policeman remanded for murder

    An Osogbo Magistrates’ Court yesterday remanded a-48-year-old policeman, Pius Felix, in prison for alleged murder.

    Felix, who is attached to Awo Police Station, Ede, is facing a count of murder.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Olubukola Oluwolagba, remanded the accused in prison custody because of the magnitude of his alleged offence.

    The prosecutor, Mireti Wilson, told the court that the accused committed the offence on December 20 at Ara Junction, in Awo, Ede.

    He said the policeman killed a man, Michael Ishola, who allegedly refused to stop his vehicle at a check point.

    The prosecutor told the court that the accused had threatened to shoot the deceased, if he failed to stop and later did so.

    The plea of the accused was not taken and the case was adjourned till February 9, next year.

    Policeman kills colleague over N20,000 ‘largesse’

    A policeman attached to the Bayelsa State Police Command has allegedly shot and killed his colleague over N20,000 largesse.

    It was gathered that the incident happened on Tuesday morning when altercation ensued between the two policemen over a sharing formula.

    The duo were said to have gone for an operation where they were given the money as rewards for services rendered.

    But the victim reportedly argued that part of the money should be given to their Divisional Police Officer (DPO), which the shooter reportedly opposed.

    Angered by the position of his colleague, the enraged policeman reportedly cocked his gun and fired his unsuspecting colleague.

    The deceased, identified as a native of Ondewari community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, is said to be survived by two wives and children.

    It was learnt that his remains were deposited at the morgue of Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, the state capital.

    Sympathisers were said to have trooped to the home of the deceased at Swali.

    Police spokesman Asinim Butswat said he had not been briefed about the incident.

    But a cousin to the deceased, who spoke in confidence, confirmed the death, but said it was not clear whether or not he was murdered by his colleague.

    “We have gone to the mortuary to identify the body, after which we will go to the police command,” he said.

    Anambra community’s mayhem: Policeman suffers neurological deficits

    ONE of the four policemen who were allegedly shot and wounded by hoodlums in Abagana community of Anambra State, Mr. Celphas Mato (a Sergeant), has suffered what the doctors called a neurological deficits.
    But the three others – Ibrahim Nuhu (Inspector), Haruna Dauda (Sergeant) and Dafur Senshaa (Sergeant) – have been discharged from the hospital.
    Doctors at Toronto Hospital in Onitsha, where Mato was rushed to, including Dr. Obi Stanley, were battling to save his life when our reporters visited the hospital yesterday.
    Dr. Stanley said the policeman’s sight had not been fully restores, adding that the victim still had what he called memory loss.
    He said: “The ballistic injuries penetrated his skull, but we thank God he is recovering well. He has neurological deficits.”
    Mato was injured when some hoodlums, said to have been from Abagana in Njikoka Local Government Area, invaded Ukpo community over land.
    During the August 19 attack, one person was killed while hoodlums reportedly shot four policemen.
    Also, three Hilux vehicles belonging to the police command were burnt, while the police station and the staff quarters, which Ukpor community built, was destroyed.
    The police command declared wanted one of the suspected leaders of he hoodlums, Emmanuel Nwude while about 23 others were arrested.
    The police said they had arrested Nwude and charged him to court for attempted murder and terrorist attack, among the 24 count charges against him.
    When the matter came up last weekend, the suspect was not granted bail and the court remanded him in prison custody until January 16, when the matter would come up again.
    Dr Stanley told our reporter yesterday that Mato was admitted on August 19 with multiple gunshot injuries.
    He said: “Mato was bleeding profusely because the injuries were mainly in his skull and he was equally in comatose.
    “He needs help from the police and the government to rehabilitate him. This will serve as an encouragement to others.”
    The victim’s 30-year-old wife, Mrs. Seratu Cephas, told our reporter that her husband’s condition was critical.
    But she thanked the doctors saving her husband’s life.
    The woman, who was in shock, hailed Prince Arthur Eze for settling her husband’s hospital bills.
    But the victim, who spoke incoherently, said Prince Eze and his command in Anambra had acted like parents, while thanking his wife for standing by him in his work.
    Another victim, Mrs. Felicia Onyemechi, who was shot
    on both legs, was still in pains when our reporter visited her yesterday at a hospital at Enugwu-Ukwu in Njikoka Local Government Area.
    She was reportedly shot in her house at Abagana for refusing to mobilise other women for a protest.

    Lagos court dissolves policeman’s 12-year-old loveless marriage

    An Agege Customary Court in Lagos on Tuesday dissolved the 12-year-old marriage between a policeman, Patrick Idoko and his wife, Udoka, over infidelity, lack of love and trust.

    Patrick, 40, from Benue State, who described his wife as troublesome and uncaring, approached the court to dissolve the marriage on grounds of infidelity, lack of love and care for him and the four children of the union.

    He said the marriage was crisis-free until two years ago when he suspected Udoka was having extra-marital affairs.

    “l set a trap for her and she fell for it on January 12 and since then, my wife refused to come home.

    “Due to her shameful act, she left me and I have been taking care of the children.”

    The petitioner said he secretly installed a memory card on the new phone he bought for her to record her conversations.

    “The playback of the phone revealed the secret conversations between the respondent and her secret lover.”

    In her response, Udoka, denied all the allegations made against her and pleaded with the court not to dissolve the marriage, attributing her travails to rumour mongers in their neighbourhood.

    The petitioner had earlier accepted to take the woman back on the condition that she subjected herself to some “spiritual cleansing”.

    The respondent agreed to the terms but, refused to follow the husband to the village for the cleansing.

    Dissolving the union, the President of the court, Mr Philip Williams, said: “The relationship between the couple has broken down completely and the respondent shows she is no more interested in the marriage.”

    He asked both parties to go their separate ways and warned them to desist from blackmailing and harassing each other.

    The president warned the respondent not to go to the petitioner’s residence, work place or his church to cause trouble and directed that the marriage dissolution certificate should be sent to Udoka to inform her about the development.

    Policeman ‘shoots’ motorcyclist at Ikorodu

    There was pandemonium at the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) terminal at Ikorodu Garage, Lagos yesterday, after a policeman allegedly shot the rider of a commercial motorcycle also known as ‘Okada’.

    The incident occurred at about 2:30pm.

    The Nation learnt that the policeman was riding his motorcycle on the Lagos Road Expressway, when he sighted the Okada rider on the same road.

    Angered that the victim was flaunting the Lagos State Traffic Law, which prohibits motorcyclists from plying certain routes, the policeman allegedly stopped and shot him on the right leg.

    Bleeding, the victim, got off his motorcycle and confronted the policeman.

    The Nation learnt that a mob, which quickly gathered, attempted to attack and seize the policeman’s rifle, but he threatened to shoot anyone who came close.

    It was gathered that the policeman eventually carried the injured man on his motorcycle, claiming he was taking him to the hospital.

    When The Nation visited the scene, another policeman was seen carting away the victim’s motorcycle, parked by the road.

    Several eyewitnesses, who declined to give their names, accused the policemen of plotting to turn the incident against the motorcyclist.

    They blamed the police for giving weapons to personnel without due training, insisting that the proper thing was to issue the motorcyclist a ticket.

    A police sergeant, identified as Doctor Ogheneovo, attached to the Effurun Roundabout park of Goddy Agofure Transport Company, has reportedly shot a commercial bus driver dead.
    The Nation gathered that the killer policeman shot his victim, identified as Ese Eruotor, for allegedly stopping to pick a passenger close to the Agofure park he guards.
    Ogheneovo, who was said to have been arrested and locked up at the Ebrumede Police Station, is said to have been posted to the transport company from the Ughelli Police Station.
    An eyewitness, who relayed the incident to the Nation in Warri on Sunday evening, said it all happened on Friday when the policeman pursued the victim from Effurun Roundabout to DSC Roundabout before catching up with him and shooting him dead.
    The eyewitness, Akpokona James, said “the driver was said to have parked in front of the Agofure park at Roundabout to pick passengers. The policeman was said have pursued him from there with a Camry, caught up with him at DSC Roundabout and shot him”.
    The victim, Ese Eruotor, is the first son of his father, Matthew and left behind a four month-old baby. The corpse of the 23-year-old driver has been deposited at a morgue within the Effurun area.
    The father of the victim, Matthew Eruotor, also confirmed the incident on Sunday decried the manner his son was killed. He called on the police authorities to ensure that his son’s killer was prosecuted.

  • Policeman, tricyclist fight in public

    There was pandemonium at Canoe in Isolo Local Council Development Area of Lagos yesterday as a policeman and a tricyclist engaged in a free-for-all.

    The incident which occurred around 8:30am, close to the tricyclists’ park was said to have been triggered by a policeman in multi who slapped the commercial rider.

    It was gathered that the tricyclist was heading toward Ajao Estate when he almost hit a man standing by the road side.

    In anger, the man was said to have slapped the operator several times, leading to retaliation.

    Not knowing that the man was a policeman, the tricyclist retaliated, beating him to a pulp before onlookers intervened.

    The Nation gathered that it was in the course of the fight that the rider knew he had attacked a policeman and fled, abandoning his tricycle.

    Policemen from Ajao Estate Division were said to have stormed the area in two patrol vans in search of the operator.

    According to eyewitnesses, the policemen carried the tricycle as well as their beaten colleague away, but no one has seen the operator after the fight.

    An eyewitness said: “The policeman was not on uniform. He was the one who slapped the tricyclist first for attempting to hit him and then, the operator retaliated. That was how the fight started. People around tried to separate them. The operator fled after he knew that the man was a police officer. He abandoned his tricycle. It was people around who showed the police when they came that the tricycle belonged to him and they took it away.”

    Court remands dry cleaner for ‘baptising’ policeman with hot soup

    AN Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court has remanded a 33-year-old man, Imole Emmanuel, in prison custody for assaulting a police corporal, Kayode Akingbade, and conducting himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of public peace.

    Emmanuel, who was slammed with a three-count charge on June 13, at about 5.30 pm, poured hot soup on Akingbade’s face and police uniform.

    He also “attempted to snatch” his service rifle.

    Policemen were said to be on surveillance around Baptist Comprehensive College area on Ilawe Road and the suspect was ordered to leave their area to allow the cops carry out their operation.

    Akingbade went to a nearby canteen to eat 35 minutes later only for Emmanuel to launch the attack on the officer while eating.

    The charge sheet reads: “That you Emmanuel Imole ‘m’ on 13/06/2016 at about 5 .30 pm at Baptist junction, Ilawe Road, Ado Ekiti in the Ado Ekiti Magisterial District did threaten with violence one Cpl Akingbade Kayode attached to New Iyin Road Police Station, Ado Ekiti by pouring hot stew on his face and police uniform before trying to struggle with his rifle and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 86(1) of the Criminal Code Cap C16 Vol. 1 Laws of Ekiti State of Nigeria 2012.

    “That you Emmanuel Imole ‘m’ on the same date, time and place in the aforesaid magisterial district did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by pouring hot stew on the face and his police uniform and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 249(d) of the Criminal Code Cap C16 Vol. 1 Laws of Ekiti State Nigeria 2012.

    “That you Emmanuel Imole ‘m’ on the same date, time and place in the aforesaid magisterial district did assault one Cpl Akingbade Kayode while eating at Nike Food Canteen located at Baptist junction, Ilawe Road, Ado Ekiti by pouring hot stew on his face and on his uniform and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 356(1) of the Criminal Code Cap 16 Vol. 1 Laws of Ekiti State Nigeria 2012.”

    At the sitting yesterday, police prosecutor, Bankole Olasunkanmi, disclosed that five witnesses have been lined up to give evidence against the accused person but only three, including the nominal complainant, were in court.

    Olasunkanmi prayed the court for a short adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

    Defence counsel, Gbenga Alabadan, urged the court to grant admit the accused person to bail, stressing that the presumption of innocence was still in favour of his client.

    He, therefore, prayed for bail for the accused person.

    Chief Magistrate Idowu Ayenimo, in his ruling, said there was no enough ground placed before the court by the defence counsel to justify the bail for the accused.

    Ayenimo ordered the defence counsel to approach the court with written bail application for the accused.

    He ordered the accused to be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case to July 7.

     

  • Mob attacks bank, beats policeman over killing of Okada rider

    A policeman whose identity could not be identified was on Friday beaten to pulp by a mob over the killing of a commercial bike rider, Sunday Okukpon.

    Okukpon was said to have bled to death before he could get to the hospital.

    Sources said the policeman was among a team escorting a bullion van to an old generation bank in Uromi, Esan North East local government.

    Witnesses said an altercation between the policemen and the victim led to the beating of Okukpon, who was eventually stabbed by one of the policemen.

    Peeved by the action, residents in the area stormed the bank and managed to seize one policeman who was beaten to pulp.

    The angry residents burnt four vehicles within the premises of the bank and destroyed the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) located within the bank.

    Staffers of the bank were trapped inside the bank for several hours as the mob attempted to set the bank ablaze.

    It took the intervention of some soldiers to rescue the bank workers.

    Police sources said the affected policeman is receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital in Benin City after he was rejected at the Irrua Specialist Hospital where he was first rushed to.

    Edo State police spokesman DSP Abiodun Osifo said he was at a function when our reporter contacted him.
