Police arrest two suspected child traffickers, rescue baby

The Commissioner of Police in Abia, Mr. Leye Oyebade, on Monday, said the command had arrested two suspected child traffickers while they were attempting to escape with a three-year-old baby in Aba.

Oyebade said this at a news conference on the activities of the command in Umuahia.

He added that detectives from Ogbor Hill Police Station went after the suspects after the baby’s mother, Mrs. Rose Ndukwu, reported the case of baby theft.

He explained that the detectives cordoned off all possible exit routes in the area before intercepting the suspects — Chinemerem Isaiah (20) and Chioma Mark (14), with the baby.

The commissioner noted that investigation into the matter had commenced to fish out the intended buyers and other accomplices in the crime.

He said the command also rescued a three-month-old baby following the arrest of two suspected child traffickers, Ezinne Obiah, 17, and Abigail Udofia, 18.

He pointed out that “both suspected girls confessed to have sold their babies to one Esther Asuquo and her colleagues in Port Harcourt.”

Oyebade said that the confessional statement led to the rescue of the three-month-old baby girl, adding that the police were still searching for the second baby and other people mentioned by the suspects.

He described child trafficking as a crime against humanity and gave the assurance that the command was working assiduously to stamp it out.

One of the suspects, Udofia, who claimed to be a JSS 3 student in Aba, said that when she was due to be delivered, she was referred to Asuquo’s house, where she stayed and gave birth to a baby boy.

She said “after my delivery, Asuquo gave me N250,000 but later sold my baby for N800,000.”

The command had also arrested some suspected armed robbers and car-snatching syndicate, including one Chisom Ajaero, who was said to be the leader of a gang that had been terrorising Aba.

Meanwhile, Oyebade said that the command was set to recall policemen posted to provide security to private citizens.

He also said that the command had banned the use of sirens and covered number plates by unauthorized persons in the state.

  • Four-year-old Dandyson aims to become one of Nigeria’s great golfers

Four-year-old Dandyson aims to become one of Nigeria’s great golfers

Four-year-old Lewis Dandyson says he aims to become one of Nigeria’s all-time great golfers having won his first  major golf tournament at the one day golf championships in Port Harcourt last Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Olypmpafrica UNIPORT Centre Sports Institute, University of Port Harcourt, hosted the one-day golf tournament at the Port Harcourt Club Golf 1928.

The tournament had different categories for the boys and girls, however, little Dandyson defeated older golfers in the 6 to 8 years category though not up to that age.

NAN reports that little Dandyson made his unexpected entry into the golf championships last year at the age of three years, six months old at the Awa Ibrahim Junior Golf Open Championships, held at Ikeja Golf Club.

There, the young golfer accompanied by his mum to the Ikeja Golf Club venue of the championship, left many who gave him no chance of any performing astonished.

Aspiring Dandyson, however, played 64 in 4 holes to the surprise of the spectators.

Relishing his experience at the Port Harcourt tournament, Dandyson told NAN on Sunday that he was well prepared to take up the challenge of becoming a star by registering for it.

Apparently, considering his age, the organisers asked him to play one hole because they never believed he could play four holes.

Dandyson, a first year pupil of Navy Primary School, Rumouorlumeni, Port Harcourt, to the surprise of many, won his category with 19 in a hole and was presented with a certificate.

Seeing his doggedness in golf, one of the dignitaries at the event Justice Dezen Okocha, said: “He is a champion of all champions because of his boldness.

“I doubted if he could play, but he proved himself,’’ he said.

En route his interest in golf, Dandyson’s mum, Noble, told NAN that he took interest in golf while accompanying his father who is also a golfer to the golf course.

“His dad take him to the golf course and that is where he took the interest from. Seeing that he is much interested by trying to hold the golf stick, we decided to encourage him.

“From there, we began to give him light training and tutorials on golf and he was picking fast. He is a fast learner.

“Last year, he was there just as a participant but seeing that he is ready for major, we registered him for the competition and he did not disappoint.

“I think he is ready to play golf to any level; he is cool and focuses on golf,’’ she told NAN.

Explaining further on how little Dandyson could realise the dream of becoming one of the great golf exports from Nigeria, his mother said that they (parents) were ready to support him.

“We are ready to support him to any level; we are also ready to sponsor him to tournaments both within and outside the country.

“Seeing Dandyson play golf is an inspiration to us, that is what he like doing next to his studies. He loves golf and that was written all over him.

“Lewis is a boy who we notice that he does any task given to him satisfactorily. He plays golf with joy not minding the time he is called upon.

“If you call him out anytime his enthusiasm will surprise you. He can play for hours in spite of his age,’’ she said.

Noble, however, advised parents to involve their children in one sport or the other, adding that it enhanced mental alertness of children.

“Sports are good for our children, it increases their alertness and they also become bold. If any child wants to take to sport, he or she should not be discouraged.

“Sending them to school may sometimes be inadequate as the saying `All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’. That play can be turned to positive things which is sports.

“We can also help our children burn their excess energy by channelling it to sports which is more profitable to vices,’’ she said.

NAN reports that other winners in the championships include: Favour Briade from Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Abuloma who won the U-14 girls category.

Samuel Wallace of Port Harcourt Club won the U-14 boys category, while Clinton Okoji of Navy Secondary School Borikiri won the U-12 boys’ category.

The first price for the U-12 girls’ category was carted away by Favour Nonso of Government Girls Secondary School Ngboshimini.

Henry Harry from Navy Primary School, Pathfinder beat other golfers to in the U-10 boys to emerge champion and also as the best player of the tournament.

Rivers: Senior citizens at elderly home beg for medical attention

Senior citizens at the Home for the Elderly in Port Harcourt Friday begged the government and well-meaning individuals and organizations for medical attention to aide their failing health conditions.

The elderly persons made this call during a health outreach packaged by the Nigerian Medical Association, (NMA) in the state as part of its programmes to commemorate the Rivers Golden Jubilee Celebration.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Matron of the Home for Elderly in Port Harcourt, Reverend-Sister MaryJane Rafael Agwubosi, thanked the body for the intervention, describing it as timely.

Agwubosi stated that the home lost two of its inmates last week to ailment and called on well-meaning individuals to join the NMA to give more medical attention to the senior citizens in the home.

She said: “When we got the message that NMA is coming to see us we were so happy. They have come at the time we need them most. We thank them for this gesture.

“Here we have a lot of challenges especially medical issues. Last week we lost two of our people here to sickness. When we sent them to the hospital they died because attention was not given to them.

“We need a lot of help. We need social workers. We need attention of the government and the public. Some time we do not have money to pay workers, but we do not lack food here. We need help to get more workers and to be able to pay them.”

Meanwhile, the Chairman of NMA in the state, Dr. Dantoye Alasia stressed the need for good medical attention to be given to elderly people and disclosed that over 60 persons benefited from the programme.

Alasai said: “We planned this comprehensive medical outreach for the elderly people in this place to cover eye care, provision of drugs, cardiac and ECG, blood sugar test, malaria, and comprehensive heart evaluation. There is also a mental health evaluation station.

“The society is changing and the care for the elderly is not what it used to be, people no more care for the elderly ones. It is a wakeup call to the fact that there is no limit to what people can do to save the situation of elderly people.”

    Ndidi’s award excites Amiesimaka

Ex-Green Eagles Winger, Adokiye Amiesimaka, says recent young player award bestowed on Wilfred Ndidi by English Premiership Club, Leicester, is a big plus for Nigerian football.

Ndidi, 20, a Super Eagles midfielder and former Nigerian youth international, joined the EPL side from Genk FC of Belgium.

Amiesimaka told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone from Port Harcourt on Wednesday that the award by the former league champions showed that Ndidi was a top quality player.

“For him to be given such an award by Leicester who won the Premier League only last season is obviously a plus.

“It means he is a top quality player and its impact on us here is good, by virtue of the fact that he is a member of the national team,’’ he said.

Amiesimaka, former Chairman, Sharks FC of Port Harcourt, said the award was also an indication that Nigerian football had a quality player in one of the best organised leagues in the world.

“Even more importantly is what we’ll do with that plus, how do we make the most of that in the national team and how will it benefit us?’’ he said.

He said that the derivation of the award should be translated to his optimal use in the national team to achieve good results in major national and international matches.

Amiesimaka said that the welfare of Ndidi and other members of the national team should be a priority to excel in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and Russia 2018 World Cup qualifying matches.

NAN reports that Ndidi started his career playing for the Lagos-based Nath Boys Academy in the Lagos Junior League (J-League) and won numerous accolades.

He then played as a central defender for Nigeria’s youth team, the Golden Eaglets in 2013 for the African U-17 Championship.

He later played for the Manu Garba U-20 youth team of Nigeria that played in the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

Ndidi was called up to the Senior Nigeria team, the Super Eagles, on Oct. 8, 2015, making his debut in the friendly game against DR Congo.

He also played again a few days later in the 3-0 win against Cameroon, when he replaced Mikel Obi in the 63rd minutes.

He was selected by Nigeria for their 35-man provisional squad for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

  • Oando to take over Port Harcourt Refinery

Oando to take over Port Harcourt Refinery

    •Mulls N40b capital raising

The Federal Government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nigeria’s largest indigenous energy group, Oando Plc to manage the Port Harcourt Refinery under a repair, operate and mainteain (ROM) arrangement.

Chief executive officer, Oando Plc, Mr. Wale Tinubu at a presentation on the underlying facts of the group’s operations at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) yesterday in Lagos, said the group has received approval of the government to oversee the Port Harcourt Refinery.

“We also got approval from the President to repair, operate and maintain the Port-Harcourt refinery together with our partner Agip. We plan to increase the refinery capacity from 30 per cent to a 100 per cent, subsequently to 120 per cent,” Tinubu said.

He said the parties to the transaction were finalising the details of the arrangement that will help to enhance the efficiency of refinery.

He noted that the group has deleveraged its balance sheet through the divestment of its upstream services company, Oando Energy Services and embarked on the expansion of its retail and gas footprint through a strategic partnership with Helios Investment Partners and Vitol Group to recapitalise its downstream business for $210 million and the $115.8 equity buy-in of its Gas and Power business by Helios Investment Partners.

He said the company was considering raising some N40 billion in new capital.

Tinubu said the first quarter earnings of the group underscore its proactive decision to focus on its dollar denominated export businesses.

“Our resilience is evident in our capacity to grow via a diversified model, and as we continue to chart our deliberate path in this challenging business environment, we look forward to better performance in the quarters to come,” Tinubu said.

Oando doubled its turnover in the first quarter of this year as the indigenous energy group continued to reap from its strategic focus on assets optimisation and deleverage.

Key extracts of the three-month report for the period ended March 31, 2017  showed that Oando Group grew its top-line by 116 per cent to N138.27 billion in first quarter 2017 compared with N63.9 billion recorded in comparable period of 2016. Gross profit also increased by 53 per cent from N8.7 billion in first quarter 2016 to N13.4 billion in first quarter 2017. The company recovered from a pre-tax loss of N461 million in first quarter 2016 with a pre-tax profit of N494 million in 2017. The company also reduced its net indebtedness by 29 per cent from N316.6 billion in first quarter 2016 to N225.9 billion in first quarter 2017.

  • Ohanaeze applauds FG on agric initiatives

The President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, has applauded the agricultural initiatives of the Federal Government saying they are yielding positive results in Igbo speaking states.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo is the apex socio-cultural organisation of Igbo speaking states in Nigeria.

Addressing newsmen in Enugu on Wednesday, Nwodo contended that with the implementation of the initiatives, the federal government had taken the best move to take the people out of recession.

He said that the various agricultural schemes embarked by the government through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) were a huge success.

The Ohanaeze chieftain said that the CBN governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, should be commended for the intervention of the apex bank in various empowerment programmes aimed at stimulating the economy.

Nwodo said: “we want to use this opportunity to salute the governor of the Central Bank.

“This gentleman has had one of the most difficult challenges that have faced any governor of the CBN.

“What he has done lately in terms of fighting the value of the naira is most commendable.

“His programmes at assisting agriculture have impacted positively on the sector.

“It is working in Imo, Ebonyi, Abia, Anambra and it is beginning to work in Enugu state and we are immensely grateful to him.

“We encourage him to continue to work in this way to ensure that the ordinary people in Nigeria can bounce back as this recession continues to recede in its calamitously effect on our standard of living.”

Nwodo said that the achievements of the government in the petroleum sector should not be overlooked as the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had been reinvigorated.

He said that the achievements recorded in the NNPC during the tenure of Dr Ibe Kachikwu as Minister of State for Petroleum and Managing Director were outstanding.

“Since the NNPC was incorporated, no minister or managing director has ever put the corporation on public portal.

“But by the click of the mouse, when our son was there, you could tell how much came into NNPC every day and how much was spent.

“For the first time, petroleum subsidy was removed without the economy collapsing,” he said.

The Ohaneze president appealed to the Federal Government to intervene and rehabilitate the Enugu/Port Harcourt expressway which he described as “death trap.’’

“While we commend the minister of Power, Works and Housing for the work that has started on the Enugu/Onitsha road, we want to draw his attention to the road between Enugu and Port Harcourt.

“The road is a death trap. It is tortuous and God knows how long it will take to rehabilitate the road especially with all the stops by security men,” he said.

Nwodo expressed concern that the entire South-East seemed to be under security siege by officers of the armed forces, who he alleged, extort money openly from innocent citizens and road users.

He said that complaints by the organisation against the brazen impunity of the security agencies on the roads across the zone had remained unattended to.

  • ‘Oil subsidy scammers nurturing vandalism, militancy, crude oil theft’

The oil subsidy scammers, who benefited immensely from fake importation of petroleum products, are nurturing vandalism, militancy, crude oil theft and the unwarranted disruptions in the sector, to the level being witnessed, especially in the Niger Delta.

The disclosure was made Wednesday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, by the Convener of the Second Edition of the Save Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry (SNOAGI) Roundtable, Dr. Brown Ogbeifun.

The roundtable was organised by the African Initiative for Transparency, Accountability and Responsible Leadership (AFRITAL).

Project SNOAGI was launched last year, as a veritable platform for bringing stakeholders together to interact, brainstorm and make prescriptions on how to improve the efficiency of the oil and gas operations, thereby assisting government in bringing sanity to the sector.

Ogbeifun said: “Most of the motherless US Dollars, British Pounds, Euro and Naira found in wardrobes, farms and soak-away pits are definitely primary or secondary products of mismanaged oil funds, which might explain why the oil industry has witnessed gross underdevelopment.

“The revelations emanating from the Malabu oil deal, the brazen cash withdrawals from oil money accounts to pursue non-value addition to the good of our hydrocarbon development are indeed very sad.

“There is no doubt that there has been lack of investors’ confidence in the oil industry, as policies and laws that would have protected their investments are not seriously addressed.

“The issues of over regulation through multiple regulatory agencies, multiple taxation, global and local oil politics have made it an intractable possibility for Nigeria to reach it’s optimum productivity.”

The convener also stated that Nigeria was ripe enough to be self-sufficient in producing all the necessary derivatives from crude oil.

Ogbeifun noted that compounding the parlous state of the oil and gas sector came the sabotaging of the pipelines by the militants, which he insisted almost crippled operations in the sector.

He said: “Paradoxically, we export our crude oil and create refining capacities for other economies, at the detriment of the Nigerian state. Why must we continue to export our mineral resources in exchange for finished products in the oil and gas industry?

“Our leaders have consistently displayed lack of political will to drive the transformation imperatives to a logical conclusion. That is why we are still talking of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), 17 years after it started its journey.

“No country treats its critical reforms the way we do. Not passing the PIB has led to losses in trillions of naira, loss of investment opportunities, inability to realise our optimum capacity utilisation and the inability to end gas flaring, which was to have ended in 2008.

“The PIB might not be a perfect document, just as it is all over the world. All we need is an enduring dialogue process and the will of steel by government to drive the process to its logical conclusion. No matter the drawbacks, the PIB contains many sections that would have greatly enhanced the hydrocarbon potential of Nigeria.”

The convener also stated that mediation was very effective in the resolution of knotty conflicts, while pleading that the ongoing dialogue process between top officials of the Federal Government and Niger Delta militants/leaders should be sustained.

He noted that while government was seeking solutions to all the challenges in the Niger Delta, all parties should sheathe their swords,  show good faith and respect for one another, declaring that no meaningful development would take place in an atmosphere of chaos and anarchy.

Ogbeifun added that the pronouncements of the Federal Government’s top officials on the setting up of modular refineries in the Niger Delta and the open confession that the crude oil and gas-rich region deserved a better deal, showed that there were still honourable men in the corridors of power in Nigeria.
