Outrage over gruesome murder of boy in Lagos

    • We are studying video, say police

The video of a child allegedly lynched and set ablaze in Lagos has caused outrage on social media with Nigerians demanding the immediate prosecution of his killers.
In the short video, the boy said to be seven-year-old was caught while trying to steal people’s phones and money at Orile-Iganmu.
Another report alleged that the incident occurred at Badagry, adding that the child was not the thief but only attempted to stop three men who later fled.
Although it could not be ascertained where the incident occurred and what led to the mob action, the video, pictures of the incident showed blood gushing from the kid’s head as his attackers meted jungle justice on him.
After beating him up mercilessly, a tyre was forced through his head and he was burnt to death.
Efforts to get the information from those that originally posted it on Saturday proved abortive as it was discovered that the information has been deleted.
However, an online site, Ibommedia, screen munched the pictures posted by one Oladipupo Raphael Dare captioned: “Lagos thief rest in bad. Good bye to you ooo”.
His post sparked condemnation from his Facebook friends who believed it was inappropriate and insensitive.
The public outcry over the video moved the police in Lagos to appeal to people with information on the incident to assist.
It was gathered that both the Divisional Police Officers at Orile and Badagry were on their toes on Wednesday trying to locate where the mob action took place within their jurisdiction without success.
Contacted, the command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police  (SP) said: “Studying the video to ascertain if it occurred. Got the report through social media. If established that incident actually occurred, the command would ensure that those behind it are fished out and brought to justice.

  • Four die, six vehicles burnt in Lagos accident

Four die, six vehicles burnt in Lagos accident

At least four men were on Wednesday killed and six vehicles razed in an early morning accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The accident which occurred around 3:00am, was said to have been caused by a diesel tanker, which lost control and rammed into a truck carrying beer, resulting to an inferno.

It driver, while on high speed, abruptly applied brakes before ramming onto the beer laden truck at Kara Bus Stop, Isheri Osun.

While three of the deceased, said to be the driver and his motorboys, were burnt beyond recognition, The Nation gathered that the other dived into the lagoon in a bid to put out the fire on their bodies but drowned.

Among the burnt vehicles were two containerised trucks, two trailers, the tanker and a Toyota Corolla saloon car.

As the emergency workers were battling to contain the Kara disaster, another petrol tanker fell at the Berger end of the Otedola Bridge, compounding traffic situation on the express.

accident-at-isheriThe gridlock extended to Ikorodu Road towards Maryland, forcing traffic management agencies to divert motorists.
However, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) insisted that only three persons were consumed by the inferno, adding that the decomposed corpse found floating in the lagoon was not part of the accident casualties.

Both LASEMA’s General Manager, Adesina Tiamiyu and NEMA’s Southwest Coordinator Alhaji Suleiman Yakubu confirmed the incident.

They stated that the intervention of firemen, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps minimised the casualty.

According to Yakubu, a driver of one of the affected vehicles sustained a minor injury, while others escaped unhurt.

Tiamiyu said: “Recovery operations of burnt vehicles with LASEMA’s heavy duty equipment ongoing to abate gridlock, which has built up on Lagos-IbadanExpressway. Traffic has affected almost every part of the expressway and Ikorodu road up to Alapere and Ogudu.

“Road users, especially articulated truck drivers are advised to avoid overspeeding and adhere to safety regulations while plying the road so as to forestall avoidable disasters.  “Investigation into the incident would be carried out by appropriate authorities at the scene.”

    Man ‘assaults’ lost-but found eight-year-son

The police in Lagos on Monday arrested a man, Adeyemi Adekunle for allegedly brutalised his eight-year-old son who was declared missing.
Adekunle was said to have caused the child serious fracture on both hands and locked him up alongside three of his siblings in their home.

Angered that the child wandered away, Adekunle, who has since been separated from the kids’ parents, vented his frustration on them.
It was gathered that Adekunle’s landlord who disliked the maltreatment being meted the children by their father and step-mother, reported to the police.
The landlord, it was learnt, notified the police that the man has been looking for a way to send the children out since his separation with their mother.
Detectives were said to have stormed the compound and confirmed what the landlord said, prompting the suspect’s arrest.

  • Rapist attacks woman, children in Lagos

Rapist attacks woman, children in Lagos

Less than two weeks after a serial rapist killed an expectant mum, Afusat Yusuf and left her husband and two children unconscious, another family was yesterday morning attacked.

The incident which occurred at the Igbefun area of Ibeshe, Ikorodu, left the residents in shock and desperate for solutions.

It was gathered that the woman identified as Toyin Ogunleye, her son, Seun and daughter Funlola were sleeping when the rapist gained access into their home through the window.

The woman resisted being raped and screamed to the hearing of other neighbours who were said to have rallied round to help them.

However, it was learnt that the rapist, who escaped the scene, injured his victims.

According to some of the residents, the frequent rape of women and children in the community could be the handiwork of ritualists, especially because pregnant and old women are not spared by their attackers.

It was gathered that the Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni visited the community Thursday evening after he heard of the development.

Contacted, the command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP) confirmed the incident, adding that Owoseni has directed the Divisional Police Officer there to fish out the culprits.
She said: “The command has arrested three suspected rapists in the area called “Badoo” and charged them to court. I don’t want to call the criminals by any name because I do not want to celebrate criminality.

“Yes, the CP visited the scene after he received the report that a woman and two children were attacked. Good enough, there was no death.

“He has directed the new DPO there to fish out the culprits and apply the concept of community policing to end the criminalty.

“He also met with stakeholders within the community where opinions were raised on how best to police the area because of its difficult terrain.

“The community expressed their readiness to partner with the police to end the menace.”

  • Teenager found dead in pool, family suspects foul play

Teenager found dead in pool, family suspects foul play

The family of 19-year-old Joshua Bello who was found dead in a swimming pool has cried out for justice, insisting he was murdered.
Bello had gone to Adeniyi Jones, Ikeja on Saturday morning after he was contracted by a caterer simply identified as Yewande for N3000 job.
It was gathered that Yewande was hired to offer catering serviced at the residence for the birthday party of a musician, who happened to be friends with the owner of the private residence son.
But the deceased’s elder brother, Michael said he got worried after his brother did not return home as usual on Saturday night and he was unable to reach him on the telephone, only to receive a call from the Wemabod Police Station on Sunday morning that Joshua has been arrested.
He said: “Joshua was called for a grilling job, something he learnt to do as a pastime and in order to make some money for himself towards school. He left my house on Saturday, October 29 at about 6am so he can get to d venue early and set up.
“After expecting his return I tried calling his line at about 7:00pm but it was switched off. Throughout the night till the next morning, I couldn’t sleep because he’s not the type that would stay out without informing you.
“Then, I got a call around 8am on Sunday that I should come over to the police station because my brother has been arrested. It was when I got to the station that they told me that my younger brother was dead.
“They said he was found dead inside the pool on Sunday morning. That it was while they were cleaning the place that they saw his personal belongings by the poolside and then, when the cleaner looked inside the pool, he was seen under.
“They claimed he probably went for a dive after working that night and drowned and they didn’t see him till the next morning but as at when he was been dragged out of the water, his body wasn’t floating. It was still  beneath the pool which was nine feet deep
“It is very strange and impossible to believe that my brother would die inside a nine feet swimming pool. Joshua was a very good swimmer. He spent the better part of his early years with our grandmother at Badagry, and that was where he learnt how to swim. I have seen him swim in deeper waters with high current.
“Another surprising thing is that the caterer, Yewande said she paid my brother his N3,000 when he finished working. But when his things were found, the N3,000 was not seen. Even his phone, Infinix Hot2 with two SIM cards, an Apple iPod and a black Rayban sunglasses he left the house with on Saturday were not found.
“According to them, the saw his polo shirt, jeans and the wallet without money. It was only on Monday, when I queried how come they saw his things and not his footwear that the police now said they found his Nike snickers and socks. How come they didn’t find it that day if he kept his things by the poolside and dived to take a bath?
“It was the first time he worked with Yewande. The owner of the house said the party ended at 7:30pm. The caterer that engaged him said he left at 8pm. The security at the house said they saw him still grilling between 8pm and 8:30pm.
“The most annoying part is that while we are still awaiting coroner paper so that an autopsy can be conducted, the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) handling the case said he has ruled out foul play. He said there were no physical marks of violence on his body and that I cannot teach him his job.
“Is that not a clear indication of compromise? I am reaching out to you because I want a thorough investigation into the matter and I want what happened to my brother to come to light. It is very painful. My parents are devastated. Joshua used to live with them at Ikorodu but I asked him to move to my place at Iju Ishaga so that he can be going for lessons to sit for jamb. All I want is justice.”
When The Nation contacted Yewande on the telephone, she declined to make comment on the issue.
She said: “I wrote my statement at the police station. We don’t know you. We have no evidence you are who you say you are and we cannot talk to you.”
The command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police  (SP) could not be reached for her reaction at the time of filing this report.

  • ‘Pliant’ policeman goes unclad to evade arrest

‘Pliant’ policeman goes unclad to evade arrest

There was drama at a United Bank of Africa (UBA) premises in Surulere on Thursday afternoon after a policeman who had followed a customer to extort her was caught pants down.

It was gathered that the policemen identified as Ogogor, who arrested a woman for alleged traffic offence had demanded N30,000 bribe from her, insisting that she would pay N50,000 should the matter get to the station.

He thereafter followed the woman who claimed to be out of cash to the bank in order for her to withdraw the N30,000 and give him, not knowing she had put a call across to a rights activist.

It was gathered that the unnamed activist contacted the Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni, who deployed policemen to the scene with an order to apprehend the errant personnel.

But on getting to the scene, it was learnt that Ogogor first went under a vehicle parked within the premises but was dragged out by his colleagues who had been directed to fetch him.

“He became violent. When he was dragged from underneath the vehicle. He started tearing his uniform and went naked in public. He striped to his pant to avoid being arrested but some area boys came to assist the policemen who came from the CP’s office to effect the arrest and they dragged him into the police van,” said a source.

It was gathered that Ogogor was taken to the X-Squad unit at the police command, where he was detained and would be tried in orderly room

  • 12 injured, motorcycles destroyed as riders, NURTW clash

12 injured, motorcycles destroyed as riders, NURTW clash

There was pandemonium at Igando, a Lagos suburb on Thursday morning after commercial motorcyclists and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) clashed.
At least 12 persons were said to have sustained injuries and several motorcycles destroyed in the fight that grounded business activities in the area.
Among the injured were Abdullahi Lawal who’s on admission at the hospital, while others are Saheed Ayanshola, Taofeeq Jimoh, Olorunfemi Shakiru, Segun Idowu, Abbass Ahmed and Kazeem Ramoni.
Trouble was said to have started after the NURTW increased the prices of the ticket for Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) including commercial motorcycles.
From a daily levy of about N400, it was gathered that the parent body increased the fare of motorcyclists to over N1,000.
It was learnt motorcyclists at Alimosho usually paid N50 tax security and ticket N200 on a daily basis until the introduction of the new rates which indicated that they have to pay N500 to the national NURTW and N200 booking tickets to operate within.
Angered by the increment, the motorcyclists’ union told their members to resist any attempt by NURTW officials to pay the levies, which did not go well with the latter.
However, the NURTW denied that the hike was over N1,000, insisting that the daily fares for motorcyclists at Alimosho was N600.
According to the union’s Secretary, Tijani Pekis, booking ticket was introduced in order to curb cases of illegal taxation motorcyclists were subjected to.
He said: “This is a case between a father and his son, which an adopted father wanted to hijack. It is a misunderstanding between the rank and file of the union and so we are meeting to resolve it.
“What actually happened was that some of our workers used the restriction of motorcycles to certain routes in the state to extort motorcyclists.
“They keep collecting money from them and these riders end up paying so much daily. In Alimosho alone, there are over 30 units and imagine how much they spend, laying N50 tax security to each one daily.
“At the end of the day, their interest is not protected and the money goes into private pockets. So, in order to correct that situation, we introduced booking tickets of N200 per day. With this ticket, an Okada can ply Igando to Egbeda and Ikotun, but cannot go to places like Surulere because of the restriction.
“At Igando, they protested and we reduced the amount to N100 per day, and then, the N500 daily paid to national, totaling N600. Still, they refused to pay. That was what caused the fight, but it’s being resolved because we are members of the same family.”
The Nation gathered that it took the intervention of anti-riot policemen from Igando Division and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) for the factions to retreat.
Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni and RRS Commander, Tunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) were on ground and appealed to the parties to maintain peace.

  • Police arrest serial fraudster, recover fake currencies

Police arrest serial fraudster, recover fake currencies

The police in Lagos have arrested a 60-year-old man for allegedly duping a young lady of N1.99million.
Hyacinth Nwogu, was apprehended after the victim, Helen Olajide, 28, filed a complaint against him at the station.
The suspect was alleged to have collected the sum in instalments from the victim, a businesswoman, under the guise of supplying her goods.
It was alleged that the suspect and his accomplices picked the lady up at Ikeja and took her to his residence where they first collected her Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card and swindled her of N150,000.
Narrating her ordeal, the victim said: “I was standing at the bus stop waiting for a cab when their vehicle came close to me and they claimed that they knew me and that they were my customers. They told me they have a business for me and being a businesswoman, I decided to go with them.
“One of them was speaking French and they claimed that they were importers and had a container loaded with computers, clothes, babies wears and other items in the warehouse. I picked interest on some of the items and wrote them down. They made me sign an agreement to pay money that they would go to Customs quarters and clear the goods.
“At the house, they collected my ATM card and went to the bank and withdrew N150,000. The next payment I made was N900,000 cash on August 26, which I gave them at Ikeja. Then, they gave me account number belonging to Chukwuma Eke Linda where I paid the other money. In all, I paid N1.992million. It was after paying that I asked myself what was happening. That I have been paying money into a particular account and I haven’t seen the goods.
“Then, I called them to come and sign an agreement with my lawyer but they switched off their phones and started avoiding me. That was when I knew I have been duped. So, I reported to the police.
“They didn’t show me anything about money and they didn’t tell me they wash money. Why would I fall for that if they told me? Are they Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)? What they told me was that they would supply me with goods.”
But the suspect denied that he promised to supply goods to the victim, insisting that it was about producing fake currency.
According to the father of five, the amount they collected from the young lady was a million naira and it was shared among the four culprits.
He claimed that the vehicle they used in carrying the lady belonged to one of his accomplices, David, now at large, adding that the fake currencies found in his custody were given to him by a friend who retired from the business.
He said: “David brought her to my house and we washed money in her presence. She picked interest in it. After washing N1000 for her, we told her about the need to get the chemicals and she was interested.
“We first collected N700,000 and later N300,000 totalling N1,000,000 and we told her that she would get N5,000,000 in return.
But when she didn’t get the money, nor see the chemical, she started demanding that we refund her money, by which time we had shared the money and the others had fled.
“That was how she went and called the police and I was arrested. She’s the fourth person I have duped. I started the business four years ago after I was duped in the same manner. I was a clearing agent and I lost over N1.2 million in the same manner. I was taken in a vehicle to a place at Iyana Ipaja. I collected N20,000, N30,000 and N70,000 from the other victims.
“What we use as the chemical is coke and vegetable oil. It is not real chemical and I am not the owner of the fake currencies. I took them from a friend who retired from the business and I was doing them. We call the fake notes treasures and it’s what we use to deceive people.
“Everything happened within a week. She visited my house about four times. My share of the money was N333,000. We didn’t use any drug on her. It was a conviction.
We show a client the money claiming it’s treasure. She gave me real money.
“I hid it under a bucket containing detergent. My wife and five children live with me but they don’t know that’s what I do.
I would not be happy if someone dupes any of my children.”
Parading the suspect, the command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police  (SP) said the suspect would be charged to court at the conclusion of investigations, adding that efforts were on to arrest the fleeing suspects.

  • Inside war-torn Lagos, Ogun communities

    Inside war-torn Lagos, Ogun communities

HUNDREDS of jerry cans littered the creeks and surrounding bushes. From a distance, countless wooden boats stocked with 50-litre jerry cans dotted the horizon. Pipes, pumping machines and tractors probably used to illegally mine sand dotted the jungle.

Bullet-riddled vehicles with shattered windscreens were on parts of the road, with less than 20 residents sighted. Some of the jerry cans bore the inscription ‘RS’.

Creek dwellings in the riverine communities of Lagos and Ogun states, especially Elepete, may be located far from urban residential areas, but newly built houses and uncompleted structures abound, apparently intended by the vandals to bring them closer to the loading bay tagged ‘General’s Republic’.

Until their venture into senseless raping, killing and kidnapping, the militants inhabited a world of their own. They hoisted flags and dug boreholes with links to underground Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipelines located kilometres away. Thus they raked in millions of dollars illegally while the nation grappled with economic woes.

Investigation by The Nation revealed that gas stations located in the affected areas were major beneficiaries of stolen petroleum products, with some paying as low as N500, 000 for the content of a 33, 000-litre fuel tanker. It was also discovered that some of the stations were directly involved in the theft, as they had pumping machines directly connected to the pipelines.

For many years, the business went on unhindered with residents of Ikorodu, Arepo, Ibafo, Igando and others connected by the waterways working as spies, informants and messengers for the vandals. They looked the other way whenever tankers and trucks laden with jerry cans of fuel passed through their communities in the wee hours of the night, particularly when their petty snack and beverage businesses enjoyed greater patronage.

With the eventual suspension of pipeline operation, however, the criminals no longer had access to the oil millions and they resorted to terrorising the residents who, in their belief, reported them to the authorities.

Short of food and money, the criminals went after the residents, decimating their livestock, raiding shops, raping women and children, stealing money, kidnapping for ransom and murdering some of the landlords in cold blood.

In some instances, the criminals beheaded victims and took body parts away, leaving the bereaved with portions of their loved ones for interment.

For several months, the rampaging militants held sway, as they ambushed and killed security operatives who dared to enter the creeks. Their onslaught continued unabated until July, when a joint taskforce codenamed Operation AWATSE launched an offensive to rid the communities of the urchins that have chased residents from their homes and killed nearly a thousand in two months.

The concerned areas, which used to be a beehive, became deserted. For the few who managed to stay for lack of an alternative, dusk began at 5:00 p.m. and dawn not earlier than 8:00 a.m.

    Operation AWATSE

Launched in 2014 by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) to clear the Majidun area of Ikorodu of pipeline vandals who hitherto used it as a haven, Operation AWATSE (the latter is a Hausa word for ‘scatter’), chaired by the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command (WNC) Rear Admiral Fergusson Bobai between July 28 and August 4, sustained aerial bombardment of Fatola, Warewa, Elepete, Ishawo, Arepo and Ibafo.

The operation allegedly saw several hundreds of the militants killed. With the offensive by Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets, MIG 34 and ATR4, the ground forces, led by AWATSE’s field commander, Colonel Julius Ogbobe, combed the creeks, destroying camps that included an observation post set up by the criminals. According to military sources, the militants bore sophisticated weapons, including General Purpose Machine Guns, gunboats and rocket launchers.

The troops, it was gathered, arrested 30 militants, and recovered pictures, bank tellers, registers containing names, assorted weapons and ammunition in the course of the raid. All were handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS).

    Kidnapped victims

Among inhabitants of the area kidnapped by the militants are four junior secondary students of the Lagos State Model College, Igbonla in Epe, Abu, Emmanuel Okonkwo, Jeremiah Ruth and Isaac Adebisi as well as their Vice Principal, A.O. Oyesola, English teacher, Lukman Oyerinde, three women and a six-month-old baby, Toyosi Aboderin, Ogechi Maku, Toju Amorighoye and Funniyi Tayo Lawal (baby), all abducted at Epe. The were Also the Isheri landlords, Kennedy Ucheagwu, Dr Omololu Bello, Fidelis Esang and trainer Olalere Olawale.

Others were three poultry farmers abducted on July 17 at Agbowa, Ikorodu: Alhaji Oyebanji Wasiu, Alhaji Isiaka Owolabi and Abiodun Adeniyi. The kidnappers collected N22 million, after which they murdered Adeniyi.

In addition were a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) pastor, Kayode Bajomo, the Iba monarch, Oba Goriola Oseni, several landlords at Iba Housing Estate and three female students of Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary (BMJS), Funmi Ogunmefun, Oluwatimileyin Olusa and Deborah Akinayo. Some of these kidnap victims have since been released.

    The missing

Some families were yet to come to a closure several months after the militants’ invasion as the whereabouts of their relatives remained unknown.

Saturday Odigie, Kareem Abubakar, Moses Kehinde and Fatai Bamgbose, seven DSS operatives, an unspecified number of naval personnel and about five policemen fall in this category. None of them has been seen by their families since they were whisked away by the militants.

It was gathered that Odigie and Abubakar were kidnapped in January after they were accused of being security informants by the militants, whereas Kehinde and Bamgbose disappeared in June.

Most of the security operatives, The Nation gathered, were killed and buried in shallow graves. However, no one has been able to confirm the locations of the graves nor have their bodies been returned to their families for proper burial.

    Return of the vandals

Calm returned to the riverine areas after the military onslaught that lasted about two weeks. Nevertheless, the residents on their return to start afresh struggled to enjoy the peace with renewed militancy.

Militants dislodged from the creeks, investigation revealed, have regrouped at Warewa, from where they easily access other parts of the state to wreak havoc. It was gathered that over 2, 000 of them, armed to the teeth, were inside the Warewa creeks.

Security sources confirmed that those who fled to Ondo, Edo and Delta states during the offensive were gradually returning to Ibafo, Ikorodu, Epe and Iba in a bid to gain more ground. The Nation gathered that the gunmen, who claimed to be freedom fighters, have used heavy material to barricade the shallow waters, making it impossible for the Nigerian Navy gunboats to penetrate.

It was gathered that the militants have, however, fled Arepo and Ishawo as a result of the swarm buggy provided by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, which made it possible for security forces to navigate the two communities within three minutes.

A source said: “They are regrouping. Feelers we have indicate that the militants were still in Warewa, while more are infiltrating Iba and Ibafo. We have also made moves and deployed necessary equipment to flush them out of the area. They have fled Arepo and Ishawo because the state governor took the bull by the horns and provided swam buggy. With this, we can navigate from Ishawo to Arepo in three minutes.

“Also, the government is constructing roads to link the communities so that security vehicles can readily access the communities and ward off the miscreants. The major problem we have is inaccessibility. Once that is sorted out, especially with those permanent structures built on the right of way, the hoodlums won’t have any hiding place within Lagos and Ogun states. These are active obstacles that need to be removed. Security forces need to be able to patrol the entire areas connected by the water within an hour.”

A visit to Barr. ABC and Ezeokoye Streets in Arepo revealed that there were about five entry/exit points used by the militants inside the creeks.

A hotel in Owutu, Western Lodge allegedly used by the militants has been taken over by the security forces following an order from Governor Ambode, it was learnt.

    Residents speak

To the residents, the military operation should not relapse, especially as Christmas is around the corner.

At Pipeline Junction, Ebute Road, Ibafo, The Nation observed that most of the residents have relocated for fear of the unknown.

A proprietor, Dr Ben Osadolor, appealed that soldiers be returned to the area. He said that the community knew peace in the weeks that the operations lasted and in subsequent weeks, noting that the situation appeared to have degenerated.

A petty trader, who declined to be named, said that the gunmen usually came in the night to rape women and children, adding that they lived in constant fear. The woman who said life was unbearable as a result of the militants, added that her business was grounded. “We enjoyed some peace during the operation, but for some time now, the militants have resumed their activities. They break into our shops, rob, rape and even kill people.

“They kill our goats and chickens, too, and steal raw food items. You can see how empty this area is. People have fled. Things are not moving. I think the government should construct good road and give us electricity here. That way, the criminals would leave our community and look for another place.”

Bobai, who led some senior officers on a tour of the area in August assured all that the operation would continue until the militants were completely stamped out. He also hinted on plans by the military to establish a permanent base in the general area for quick responses, assuring residents of their safety.

He said: “We got a directive from the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Gabriel Olonisakin, to carry out an operation in Arepo and dismantle the vandals’ camps scattered around the area.

Initially, we were directed not to use air power but when we carried out an assessment of the area, the vandals had moved from accessible areas to the mangroves.

“So, we got back to the CDS informing him that taking out the target is through air power, and we were directed to do a general assessment and deploy attack helicopters. So, we first deployed a surveillance aircraft to see the area and we analysed the videos and pinpointed the places to be destroyed.

“The revelation from the video showed that a lot of pipeline vandalism was taking place. We could see several jerry cans chained together in the area. Because the area wasn’t easily accessible as a result of bad roads and shallow waters, the vandals had a booming business. They also used trees to cause obstruction on the waterways.
