No petrol price increase now- NNPC GGM

The Group General Manager (GGM) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru on Tuesday ruled out possibility of imminent increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol.

There are online reports suggesting that the Federal Government will soon increase the price which was increased in May from N86 to N145 per litre.

But speaking with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Baru said that he has not received any directive for increase.

Noting that the request for forex for importation of petrol has been met, he declared that the supply situation for fuel is the country is robust and won’t push price increase.

He said: “I have not been directed to increase pump price, even the other price was based on recommendation from the regulated body. I’m not aware that they are planing to do any increase, you know there are several factors that necessitated that especially the issue of exchange rate that has moved and we don’t expect any serious changes.

“So far the request for forex for importation of gasoline popularly called petrol has been met, and our own supply situation is robust.

“We are meeting demands. We have over 1.4 billion liters on ground. So I don’t see any basis for increase.

“However, the review could be done by the right body, you should contact PPPRA, that is the regulatory body as far as petrol pricing is concern.” He added

World will forget us if we balkanize Nigeria — Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said that the world will forget Nigeria if its citizens allow the country to be balkanized.

Jonathan said this on Wednesday while addressing State House correspondents shortly after his brief meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said he had always stood for a united Nigeria not because of its oil wealth, but because of the greatness of its human resource and the uniqueness of its diversity.

The former President said he was not the only one suing for peace in the Niger Delta and in other parts of the country as all the traditional rulers, elders and opinion leaders of the Ijaw ethnic nationality are with him.

“You see, it is not just about me, but all the traditional rulers, elders and opinion leaders of the Ijaw ethnic nationality.

“We have been in touch to see that peace reigns in the country because those of you, who were here when I was here, followed my thoughts.

“The emphasis is that we need a united Nigeria and I always emphasise that Nigeria is great.

“We are great because of our size, the human resources that we have, the diversity we have, and so, if we balkanize the country into small components, we will all be forgotten by the world.

“And without peace, you can never reap development anywhere in the world.

“So, we are all working collectively to see that these issues are resolved,’’ he said.

On the fight against corruption by the Buhari administration, Jonathan declined to comment, saying that most of the cases of alleged corruption were in court.

“There are too many cases that are in court and it will not be fair for me to comment.

“I have always said that at the appropriate time, when most of these things have been resolved, we will (talk),’’ he said.

Jonathan, who is leading the AU election monitoring team to Zambia, said he was at the Presidential Villa to brief Buhari on the activities of the team.

He said: “I came to brief Mr President on some of my engagements in the immediate past and of course, the future.

“Of course you are aware that I would be leading the AU election monitoring team to Zambia; normally you (need to) properly brief the President.

“So, I came to brief the President on some of my external engagements; it is a tradition.’’

The former president further said that he is a regular caller to the Villa, having served as the country’s President at a point in time.

“One key thing is that having been the head of a government – a former president – you become a statesman.

“That is the privilege you have, but every privilege has its own corresponding responsibilities.

“And when you become a statesman, normally you brief the sitting president on most of your international engagements that have to do with public speaking and some other international assignments.

“Even when I was here, the former presidents used to do what I have come to do.

“I have been coming, but in most cases we used to meet at night.

“That is why you don’t see me,” Jonathan explained.

  • Nigeria working hard to stabilize power, says Buhari

Nigeria working hard to stabilize power, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday assured that Nigeria is working hard to resolve the power problem facing the country.

He noted that the problem is also affecting other neighboring countries who are depending on Nigeria for their power supply.

Buhari spoke while receiving the Togolese President, Faure Gnassingbe, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said: “They say seeing is believing, you can see the efforts private investors are making. We are also building pipelines but it is not as formidable as what Dangote is doing, we are improving on it. We also have the LNG that is helping us to liquidify the gas and then turn it into gas with modern technology and modern technology is making it flexible.

“And if you will recall, I made mention to President of Benin, We have power problem and Benin has power problem because they depends on us and we are working very hard to stabilize the situation. The resources are available, the technology is available we are trying to stabilize the situation.

“If ‎we improve power which means our productivity can be competitive and God’s willing we are going to achieve our objectives.

He also said that they discussed the unfortunate incidents in South Sudan, Burundi during the closed door meeting.

“It is an agonising situation, several citizens are living under primitive conditions, we hope at the AU meeting we will be able to stabilise‎ the situation in South Sudan and Burundi with the efforts being made.” He stated

‎The Togolese President said that he was impressed by the Dangote investment which brought him to Lagos State.

He said: “Because we have been talking of Socio-economic integration and promoting trade among African countries. If you want to promote trade you have investors that are very competitive and will contribute to reduce import from non-African countries.

“I was told the gas pipeline that will be built will be buried under the sea‎ to make it. It means if you want to promote blue economy, our ocean needs to be very safe. We need security,” he said.

According to him, he was also in Abuja to invite President Buhari for the maritime summit billed for Togo on the 15th of October, 2016.

Buhari vows to deal with anti-corruption detractors

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday night declared that those planning to deter his administration from fighting corruption in the country will face the consequences.

He spoke at the Presidential Villa during the breaking of fast with some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), Taxi drivers, hair dressers, motorcycle riders, barbers, transport workers, butchers, tailors, and junior staff of the campaign office of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said: “Whoever deters us from fighting corruption will suffer the consequences.”

The President said that it was unfortunate that some members of the elite were self-centred and only cared for themselves as very little was on ground to show for the huge income got from sales of oil in the 16 years of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rule.

Noting that they mismanaged what accrued to the country, he said that the past administrations were not able to fix power, rail, and no drinking water for the populace among other problems.

He told the group that his administration was conscious of their needs and desire but that the government met very poor conditions on ground.

The prices of oil in the international market, he noted, fell from above $100 to $30 per barrel, which has adversely affected the economy.

The President took time to personally serve some of the physically-challanged Nigerians the type of food they wanted to eat during the dinner.

Delivering the votes of thanks, a disabled, Musbahu Lawal Didi commended the President for having the interest of disabled persons at heart.

He also urged the President to set up a Commission for the disabled so that their interest can be further taken care of.

Muslim and Christian prayers were offered by two IDPs including Musa Abdullahi from Gwoza, Borno State and Joseph Jauro from Adamawa State.

Present at the dinner included the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal.

Pipeline bombings: Buhari appeals to militants to soft pedal

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday urged Niger Delta militants to soft pedal on the bombing and destruction of oil and gas installations.

He made the call during the breaking of fast with All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The President also urged those closed to the militants to prevail on them to take it easy.

Noting that the militants are in many groups, he said that the equipment they are using negatively are not small technology.

He said: “I honestly don’t know how many factions the militants are in the Niger Delta compared to the north east where you have the Boko Haram.

“The technology being deployed by the militants to destroy oil installations is high tech, the way they can go on high sea and international waters and target oil installations is a national problem. It is affecting development.

“No insurance company will want to insure installations that will end up being blown up and no banks will want to finance such installations.

“Those of you who have friends among the leadership or even the militants themselves should plead with them in the name of God ‎Almighty to take it easy.

“We need to stablise to create employment, we need to stabilize the economy etc. I agonize over these things.

“We are in a very difficult time, so we have to organise ourselves. Anybody that says he has any other country than Nigeria should go out and see.”

The President also said that the successful conduct of the APC primaries in Edo State has given him a new hope.

He said that Ondo State is going to be watched very closely in order to ensure that the vote of the people count.

The APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun welcomed the President back from his medical vacation abroad.

He also expressed satisfaction with what the President has been able to achieve in a short time.

He said: “Corruption is fighting back and change does not come easily. The way we do things must change. Our prayer is for God to give you the courage, wisdom and strength to set the new standard for the country.”

  • Nigeria needs Buhari now, says Osinbajo

Nigeria needs Buhari now, says Osinbajo

    • Says Buhari is honest and straight forward

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday said that Nigeria currently needs President Muhammadu Buhari at the helm of affairs as a honest, straightforward and with a genuine heart.

He spoke during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the Deeper Christian Life Church, led by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Even as some people have noted that President Buhari is strict because of his forthrightness, he said he is the kind of leader the country needs now.

He stressed that he is a president who will not cut deals and who is only interested in moving Nigeria forward.

In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, Osinbajo said: “We are very happy that we have a President who is honest, a President who is straight forward, a President who is operating from the genuineness of his heart, this is the kind of leader that we need now,”

He also said that he has worked together very well with the President.

Acknowledging the current economic situation in the country, the Vice President said that the current administration did not create the problems.

He said: “The reason (we are here at this time,) is known to the Lord Himself. Everyday I wake up knowing there is a cause for being here and it is to move the country forward.”

Osinbajo told Pastor William Kumuyi that the clean-up of Ogoni and the Niger Delta is very important.

He said: “The situation is very bad, I have been in the area a few times, but we need peace in the area to be able to carry on with the clean-up exercise.”

He also said the clean-up exercise will take decades but with the phased implementation people can gradually return to fishing and farming.

On the power sector, he noted that by February this year, the country was doing 5000MW of electricity for the first time in history, and that the militants’ attacks on the pipelines have made things bad not only regarding electricity, but also cutting the oil revenues of the nation.

He however assured that government is working diligently on effective solutions to those challenges.

He was clear that God has a purpose for choosing the President and himself to serve at this time, saying “this is the doing of the Lord.”

The Vice President thanked Pastor Kumuyi for coming, noting that “your visit is a wonderful gift.”

Speaking earlier, Pastor Kumuyi said he is in the Federal Capital Territory for a crusade and thought to pay a visit to the Vice President.

He thanked God for the progress made so far by the Administration, adding that “God will fulfill the purpose for which He brought you at a time like this.”

While inviting the Vice President to the crusade, Pastor Kumuyi pledged his contributions and prayers for the Buhari administration, and also for the progress of the country.

  • Buhari vows to end fraud, corruption in Nigeria

Buhari vows to end fraud, corruption in Nigeria

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday vowed to leave no stone unturned to rid Nigeria of fraud and corruption.

He made the remark while addressing State House staff that gathered at the forecourt of the Presidential Villa to formally welcome him back from his medical vacation.

According to him, those that take whatever does not belong to them will be made to face prosecution.

He said: “All fraud must stop. If they don’t believe us, they should go try and see those we caught red handed with public funds. This exercise will continue as long as this leadership is here.

“Whoever takes anything that does not belong to him or that he is not entitled to, it will be documented and the person will be taken to court. This is the only way I think we can bail ourselves out.

“I am asking you to dedicate yourselves more to your country because I said more than 30 years ago, that there is no other country we can call our home, but Nigeria,” he said.

He added: “We are determined to rehabilitate our country for the sake of our children and our grandchildren. I have never in my life from class monitor to this place, twice in different forms, believed in corruption.

“But we don’t touch anybody who did not touch public funds, you should behave yourself. If you don’t have houses in Abuja and the whole of Europe, you will sleep soundly. You and your family will earn respect. But if you shortchange the treasury, you will be caught and I pity your family because people will be abusing them.

“People will be calling you big thieves that how did you raise money to build all the houses in Abuja and Europe with your meager salary? I think personal integrity is something to be encouraged. I assure you that I am absolutely dedicated to serve Nigeria. Those who behave themselves will never regret, but those who don’t behave themselves, will have problem,” he added.

He noted that one of the greatest challenges his administration is facing is not meeting any savings on ground despite the huge income from sales of oil which crashed as low as $30 per barrel since 2014.

Picking on power, he said that there was virtually no improvement in the sector since 1999 despite the billions of Naira spent.

The President also said that it was shameful that most states in the country can’t pay workers’ salaries.

He said: “27 out of the 36 states couldn’t pay salaries. This is a disgrace to Nigeria. It is a disgrace up till now most of the states cannot pay salaries. What happened to all we have gotten over the years? We look up and down, left, right and centre, what have we saved? There was nothing because we developed a consumption culture that we were not supposed to develop. Most of your colleagues that have left service, I doubt if they are getting benefits. That is the situation we find ourselves in.”

Noting that the army has made remarkable improvement against insurgency in the northeast part of the country, he observed that militants in the Niger Delta are competing on destroying oil installations.

He said: “Unfortunately, the other unstable part of the country, the Niger Delta, with their myriads of organizations that are competing over which one can do more damage to the country and the oil companies and oil wells. For how long are we going to do this?”

Stressing that it is not easy to preach change to the people for what they are used to since 1999, he however said that there is no going back on the change agenda of the administration.

He said: “The change must take place because as I said, when we were used to getting $100 par barrel… this reflects on the economic predicament the country finds itself. This has affected the morale and integrity of a lot of people who bother to ask what is happening to their country.

“The fact that you work here, no matter what level, people expects you to know and they expect you to discuss with them intelligently and show your concern for your country and what we are going to leave for our children and grandchildren. Let’s not lose the opportunity for the future so that we can build infrastructure.”

On the power sector, he said: “Look at power, how much did we spend on power? from barbers to factories, shops, we all depend on power. There is virtually no improvement from 1999 till now no matter how many billions they have spent.

According to him, the immediate alternative to revamp the economy is to embrace agriculture and the solid minerals sectors.

He said: “That was why we voted a lot of money for agriculture so that we can at least feed ourselves. And once we can feed ourselves, we can say okay let the struggle continue. At a least we can eat two to three meals par day.

“We have to quickly go back to the farm. It is too late for this year. But next year, we will make a better arrangement to make sure next year, we can feed ourselves.” He said

Changes aimed at reducing costs of governance, he said, included pruning down of the number of ministries from 42 to 24.

On his medical vacation, he said: “I thank you for welcoming me back from my health break. You are the judges, perhaps I look healthier than I left or I came worse.”

Speaking earlier on behalf of the staff, the Permanent Secretary of the State House, Jalal Arabi, said: “We are here to welcome you back from your well-deserved vacation.

He reassured the President of the staff’ commitment and loyalty to his core value of integrity, transparency, accountability and fear of God.

The Permanent Secretary also promised that the staff will continue to do their best on what is expected of them.

He also prayed for good health, God’s guidance and wisdom to continue to lead the nation.

  • ‘Buhari’s wife not exerting undue authority in Presidency’

‘Buhari’s wife not exerting undue authority in Presidency’

The Arewa Youth Integrity Forum (AYIF) has called on well-meaning Nigerians to disregard report that the wife of the President, Hajia Aisha Buhari is exerting undue authority at the Presidential Villa.

National President of AYIF, Ibrahim Abubakar, who spoke in a statement issued in Abuja Thursday, said the report is an attempt by disgruntled elements in the society to cause disaffection in the land.

He described those behind the report as criminally minded people who are trying to paint the northern part of the country as politically domineering and in disregard of the constitution.

“Those behind this plot went to town with the claim that the wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari is acting as president while Kaduna state governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai functions as vice president.

“All Nigerians, the right thinking ones, are aware that President Muhammadu Buhari is President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria with Professor Yemi Osinbajo as Vice President. In a record making move, President Muhammadu Buhari properly notified the National Assembly of his ten-day medical leave and Professor Osinbajo’s status as acting President in that time span.

“It is therefore sad that this kind of wicked rumour is making the rounds at a time when Nigerians, especially from within his party, should support Mr. President with prayers.

“We have it on good authority that those behind the rumour are political terrorists that are highly placed persons in the All Progressives Congress (APC) who want to plunge the country into crisis in pursuit of their personal agenda.

“It is appalling that people can advertise their ignorance on an unprecedented scale by claiming Mrs. Buhari is the one acting as President. The only logical explanation other than crass ignorance is that this claim is being made out of malice and mischief.

“The Arewa Youth Integrity Forum hereby categorically warn these characters from disparaging Mrs. Aisha Buhari or members of her family.

“This latest allegation is the latest in a series of smear campaign that has consistently sought to undermine her family life. It however went beyond bounds this time around by trying to precipitate a national crisis by attempting to play on the minds of Nigerians by conjuring a past era that has no similarity with our current scenario,” AYIF said.
