Always stand for truth, Osinbajo charges Nigerians

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has admonished Nigerians to always stand by the truth in their daily lives in order to honour God and secure His intervention.

Osinbajo gave the charge in a sermon he delivered on Sunday to the congregation at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Jesus House, Silverbird Entertainment Centre, Central Area, Abuja.

In the sermon, titled “The Image of Gold’’, the acting president said that a decision to stand by the truth always entail a level of discomfort or even outright persecution, but that God will always show up to justify the righteous.

Taking his text from the Book of Daniel Chapter 3 verses 1 to 29, Osinbajp, a pastor of the RCCG, recalled the story of Shedrach, Meshach and Abednego who refused to bow to the golden image of the idol as ordered by Nebuchadnezzar, the then King of the global empire of Babylon.

He said the three Jewish young men, who were then being held in captivity in Babylon, refused to bow to that golden image as a result of which they were hauled into the pit of fire.

Osinbajo said that the captives survived the fiery fire because the Living God was with them in the fire, adding that God honoured His word in their situation as He promised in the Book of Isaiah 43: 2.

“When God showed up in the fire through His Son, it was the first direct appearance of God in the Old Testament. If they had chosen to bow to the golden image and thereafter seek to make amends through prayer and fasting, it would not have helped them.

“It is when you are passing through fire that you make a choice for God to honour Him. God said He will show up then,’’ the acting president said.

Osinbajo said that in every circumstance of life, people, especially Christians, must stand up to what is right and just.

God is asking us to stand and stand up for something, be it against corruption, dishonesty, stealing or fraud in our offices etc. If we do not, we are bowing to that image of gold. We should stand for what we believe in as the three Jews did.

“Every time we look at the scripture, God is saying: `Stand for something. You cannot afford to stand for anything. Stand for Christ. The choice that faced the three Jews is still before us today. We face it every day and we must stand for Christ, especially Christians.

“Are you going to bow to the image of gold or take a chance with God and expect Him to show up? If you stand for Him, He will surely show up. God wants us to trust Him and to believe Him.

“Are you going to bow to the image of gold or trust God to show up when you are thrown to the fiery fire? There are certain things that honouring God can do which fasting and praying cannot do.

“Praying and fasting is good but it is better to Honour God in all that we do to provoke His intervention in our situations.

“The image of Nebuchadnezzar is alive and well today – it exists. That image of gold stand before us everyday and everywhere. We must choose God.

“Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon had represented the system of the world, the corrupt system of the world governed by the devil.

“Nebuchadnezzar was the king of that world system representing Lucifer, the Satan. So Nebuchadnezzar is saying to the people of all nations that Satan rules there. So you have to choose whether to serve the living God or bow to the image of the devil.

“You must choose God. That is a decision which you and I make face everyday,’’ Osinbajo declared.

Earlier, the acting president was ushered to the altar by the Parish Pastor of the Church, Pastor Pat Akem.

Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo accompanied the acting president to the church service.

Reps refer Buhari to interpretation of law on Magu’s confirmation

The House of Representatives has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to approach the court for the interpretation of the laws surrounding the appointment of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Despite being told that being the aggrieved party, the House ought to be the body to approach the court for the position of law on the issue, the lawmakers insisted that the Executive should head to the court for clarity on the issue.

The lawmakers said their decision became imperative for the preservation of doctrine of separation of power going by the remarks by Vice President (VP) Yemi Osinbajo, who backed his position with Section 171 of the Constitution that the appointment of EFCC Chairman does not require the confirmation of the Senate.

The Senate had to reject President Muhammadu Buhari’s nominee, Ibrahim Magu twice.

Following the adoption of a motion on the need to prevent the erosion of the doctrine of the separation of powers in the nation’s democratic practice by  Minority Leader Leo Ogor (PDP, Delta), the lawmakers roundly condemned the Vice President for attempting to ridicule the nation’s parliament with his remarks on the issue.

Ogor said rather than make utterances that point to a negation of the doctrine contained in Sections  4(2), 5 and 6 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, the Executive should approach the court for the interpretation of the law.

He said: ” I brought this motion clearly in defence of our democracy and in defence of the doctrine of the separation of power. Our democracy stands on a tripod which must be protected”, he said.

“By the clear provision of Section 2 (3) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act, the Chairman of the anti-corruption agency shall be nominated by the President subject to the confirmation of the Senate;

“I am convinced that the EFCC Act is an Act of the National Assembly that can only be set aside by a Court of competent jurisdiction, and until that happens, the law remains in force and binding on all persons and authorities in the country;

“Furthermore, I’m  aware that the Executive Arm of Government has not filed any proceeding in any court to challenge the provision of Section 2 (3) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act of 2004.

“Under the Doctrine of Separation of Powers, the interpretation of the Constitution and Acts of Parliament is the sole responsibility of the Judiciary and not that of any person or official of the other Arms of Government;

“It should be of concern that the statement credited to the Vice President is capable of eroding the Doctrine of Separation of Powers in our democracy, with its obvious implication of instituting a dictatorship in the country.”

Supporting the motion, among several other lawmakers, Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers) said Osinbajo should know that he is not the best despite being a professor.

He said utterances of the government officials like the VP should be discouraged from being turned into the government policies.

Sunday Karimi (PDP, Kogi) said the VP should be summoned to explain to the House why he has to ridicule the nation’s parliament with his remarks.

On the other hand, Sani Zoro  (APC, Jigawa) urged his colleagues to exercise caution by confirming the authenticity of the remarks credited to the VP before taking a decision.

On his part,  Abiodun Balogun (APC, Lagos)  said since it was the House that was the aggrieved party, in this case, it should be the one to approach the court for the interpretation of the law.

“It is not advisable to ask the Federal Government to approach the court over its own position in this matter.”

The contributions of the two were rejected.

The motion was unanimously adopted after it was put to a voice vote by Speaker Yakubu Dogara.

Committee on Legislative Compliance was mandated to ensure the implementation of the resolution.

Nigeria blessed with great talents – Osinbajo

The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Wednesday hailed the talent and resilience of Nigerians wherever they are.

The Vice President said this when he received on a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa Capt. Lola Odujinrin, the first African to fly round the world as a solo traveller.

He said: “The country (Nigeria) is blessed with great talents and Nigerians are among some of the most creative and smartest persons around the world.

“Your story is really fascinating and I am extremely proud of what you have done and more that you are a Nigerian.

“And I am very sure that just as we took over the entertainment industry, we will certainly break new grounds.’’

The vice president, who was full of praises for the young pilot and his team’s achievements, said “this is the sort of thing that people should hear especially young people.

“It is really inspiring and younger people must begin to learn from your experience and story, and am glad that you achieved this feat.

“Also, the team is entirely Nigerian and that by itself is certainly a good thing and am sure this portends even greater things for us in the future’’.

On the pilot’s humanitarian project, Osinbajo said that he looked forward to supporting the project, but advised that it should be on a scale.

“Whatever you plan to do in this area must be on scale because the most important thing you have to focus on is scale so that it can be expanded.’’

Earlier, Odujinrin said his goal was to put Nigeria on the world map by being the first African to “go round the world as a solo pilot and achieve that humanitarian aspect of the dream’’.

In his brief narration about his world flying project, Odujinrin said it was first inspired by his dream to fly aircraft at the age of 10.

According to him, “it is important to share my story in order to inspire kids, adults and everyone about the struggles I went through in life’’.

Odujinrin flew several hours to 25 countries and made 35 stops in nine months, making him the first African to attain the feat.

Tinubu a working made-in-Nigeria product – Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, has described the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as a true example of a working made in Nigeria product.
Governor Ambode who made the remark yesterday at the well-attended Colloquium held at the Eko Hotels and Suites, to commemorate Tinubu’s 65th birthday, said Tinubu political success transcend the length and breadth of the country.
Addressing the large turnout of dignitaries from all walks of life, including Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, past and serving governors, ministers, members of National and State Assemblies, members of the diplomatic corps, among others.
Ambode explained that like the Coconut, the APC stalwart has continued to be fruitful, creating more products and by-products from his political dynasty than any other living made-in-Nigeria political product in recent history.

He said Tinubu, who was governor of Lagos from 1999 to 2007 contributed immensely to the success story of the State, adding that he was one of Nigeria’s shining examples in the political terrain.
The governor said: “Like the coconut, some by-products/fruits will get bad along the way or after being sold in the market; in actual fact, the political product may not be the favourite of some other people.
“The bottom line, however, is simple; If Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, were a coconut; I dare say, with all simplicity, I would be among the forefront liners that will eat, drink and sleep B.A.T. 24/7.
“The test of a successful leader is the number of leaders that he has created.  Using this globally accepted parameter, Asiwaju, at 65, is, without a doubt, a winner in this category.
“There is no doubt the Asiwaju political dynasty is a made in Nigeria product.  The foundation laid and blueprints developed during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State which cuts across all sections of the State’s economy have actually simplified the process of governance till date.

Describing the theme of the Colloquium, ‘Make it in Nigeria – Use What We Make-Make What We Use”, Ambode said he was an unrepentant convert of the ideology, noting that Lagos state has demonstrated it with the successful partnership with Kebbi state on Lake Rice.

Lagos speaker hails Buhari, Osinbajo style of leadership

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has urged leaders around the world, politicians especially, to emulate the exemplary leadership style of President Muhammdu Buhari and Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

Commenting on the return of President Buhari from medical vacation in UK at the weekend in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Political and Legislative Matters, Hon. Mufutau Egberongbe, Obasa commended President Buhari for handing over the baton to Prof. Osinbajo when he was leaving for London for his vacation.

According to him, the President did the expected and necessary thing by handing over to Osinbajo, “and since the president left for vacation, activities in the country were not put on hold, in just one week, Osinbajo visited Rivers state two times despite being an opposition state as well as some other Niger Delta states.

“The Acting President didn’t just visit Rivers state, while there he flagged-off the reconstruction of doctors’ quarters in Port Harcourt and also inspected the ongoing construction of the Rivers state Ecumenical Centre.

“And just last week, he paid an unscheduled visit to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, where he expressed dissatisfaction with the state of some of the facilities within the airport, and noted that there was need to urgently make the facilities function at optimal level.

“Few days after this visit to the airport, the Federal Government sacked all the nine directors of the nine directorates in the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). This shows that we have a Vice President who is not docile; in other climes, the Vice President would have to wait for the President to return before taking action,” Obasa said in the statement.

“There were so many other pressing issues Osinbajo was able to take care of during the period without any controversy”.

The Speaker further explained that the attributes displayed so far by Osinbajo gave President Buhari the confidence to attend to his health fully, adding that he (Osinbajo) has shown that he is capable and can deliver in the absence of his principal.

Obasa maintained that Osinbajo has served as a Commissioner for Justice under the tutelage of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his contributions to the state judiciary and legal system cannot be over-emphasized.

“He has been in the thick of the action since Buhari left the shores of the country to proceed on vacation and a routine medical check-up in the United Kingdom. Leaders must emulate this leadership style of Buhari and Osinbajo,” Obasa added.

• Ijaw group hails FG’s directive for oil companies to relocate to N/Delta

Ijaw group hails FG’s directive for oil companies to relocate to N/Delta

The Ijaw Professionals Association (IPA) has described as a step in the right direction, the Federal Government’s historic directive that oil companies must relocate their corporate headquarters to the crude oil and gas-rich Niger Delta region.

It noted that the directive, which was conveyed by the then Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on March 2 this year, during his equally-encouraging stakeholders’ consultation tours to all states of the Niger Delta, would ensure a lasting peace in the region.

IPA, in an online statement on Tuesday by the Chairman of its Board of Trustees (BoT), Maj.-Gen. Paul Alaowei-Toun; President of Homeland Chapter (Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta States), Iniruo Wills; and President of Lagos Chapter, Elaye Otrofanowei; described the directive as the strongest signal in many years that the Federal Government had sincerely begun to address the age-old challenges of the Niger Delta region from the roots, rather than the usual cosmetic approach of trying to dust off the symptoms on the surface.

It said: “The presidential directive answers one of the cardinal demands of petroleum host communities over the last half-century. For the oil producing and heavily oil-polluted communities and states in the Niger Delta, this might be the most authentic evidence of the Nigerian local content policy that was recently enacted into law but is yet to be of much practical value to our people’s lives and local economies in the region.

The effects on the water of an oil spill which occurred in mid 2007, near the community of Goi, Ogoniland, Nigeria, photo taken 28 January 2008.

“Hopefully, the directive will also mark a departure from the mutually counter-productive tactics of seeking to suppress agitation and its regrettable ramifications by military might.

“Although the Federal Government’s directive, even upon complete implementation, will not be the final solution to the Niger Delta question, it will be of tremendous benefit to Nigeria and to the Niger Delta, due to the significant impact it will have on the region in terms of social and economic empowerment, restoration of the crucial peaceful atmosphere for smooth oil and gas operations and the consequent sustainability of the substantial national revenues flowing from the region and its coastal treasures.

“The speed and commitment with which the directive will be implemented and facilitated by all stakeholder segments are matters of critical national importance and urgency. The momentum must not only be maintained but maximised as well.
”It is highly incumbent on all key stakeholders and drivers to act promptly and decisively towards immediate implementation of the Federal Government’s directive.”
The Ijaw professionals also looked primarily to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Emmanuel Kachikwu, in his usual energetic manner, to drive an accelerated process for the relocation of all oil and gas companies to their areas of operation.kachikwu

IPA noted that the relocation should affect the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), its various subsidiaries (NAPIMS, NETCO, HYSON, IDSL, etc.) and the relevant regulatory/monitoring and capacity building agencies such as the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) and the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), which it said had all curiously remained at a dysfunctional distance far from the geographical centres of their operations and mandates.

It said: “We trust that the industry operators, especially but not restricted to the multinational oil companies, will cooperate fully and swiftly on this declared thrust of the Government of Nigeria.

“It is also our minimum expectation from the indigenous operators that they will follow suit, moreover as they are all beneficiaries of the petroleum industry indigenisation or Nigerian-local content policy and in particular recent divestments of oil mining leases and marginal fields.

“The people of the Niger Delta region and the rest of Nigeria look forward to this.”

IPA also admonished home governments of the oil companies to take all measures to actively encourage their corporate nationals to comply with this directive of the government of Nigeria.

The oil firms were asked to start to address the grave and intolerable hardships and losses they had continuously inflicted on the people and communities in the Niger Delta region for about sixty years.

Ijaw professionals said: “We urge, as a matter of urgent responsibility, the governors of the affected states in the Niger Delta, the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, the Niger Delta Development Commission and the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs to seize the moment now and work together and with the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and the Minister of Budget and National Planning, to facilitate the actualization of the directive.

“This should include an immediate and mutually coordinated short to medium term infrastructure and amenities plan, with clearly defined stakeholders’ commitments on funding and other enablers. Such a strategic facilitation plan will be of immense value towards bringing the Federal Government’s visionary directive to quick fruition.

“Our governors and other key actors, including leading professional bodies and genuine stakeholder platforms, should commit themselves to this opportunity and challenge, with the target of ensuring that the relocation of all oil and gas companies is consummated within the next six to twelve months, while arrangements for perfecting their settling down continue for such further time as may be expedient.

“IPA commits to collaborating with these vital governmental and non-governmental institutions and mobilising its wide membership, expertise and leverages towards the fulfilment of this potentially-redefining and transformative-presidential directive.”

Members of the association also stated that they were studying with keen interest, the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) that had just been released by the Federal Government, in its bid to revitalise the Nigerian economy.

IPA added that part of the proceeds of the planned divestments should be to fund and underwrite the critical infrastructure needs of the Niger Delta.
