  • Promasidor marks World Teachers’ Day

    Iyanuoluwa Osewa and Abiodun Bello both from The Ambassadors College, Ota, Ogun State repeated the feat of their respective students who won last year’s Cowbellpedia Secondary School Mathematics TV Quiz Show, sponsored by Cowbell, the flagship brand of Promasidor Nigeria Limited.

    In the Teachers’ edition of the competition, which was conceived to mark the World Teachers’ Day, teachers of the 12 finalists in the Junior and Senior categories of the 2016 edition of the competition, slugged it out.

    In the Junior category, Osewa, whose student Juliet Ekoro won that category last year, emerged the champion having contested with Ezekiel Adeyemi of Bibo Oluwa Academy, Ilesa, Osun State and Esther Emmanuel of Scholars Universal Secondary School, Ota, Ogun State. Other teachers who participated were Abosede Adeolu of Greater Tomorrow International College, Arigidi-Akoko, Ondo State; Emmanuel Aina and Alabi Akoredele, both of The Ambassadors College, Ota, Ogun State.

    Osewa, son of Samson Osewa, the Proprietor of Ambassadors College, scored 100 points to win the ultimate prize of a branded laptop and a plaque. “I have loved Mathematics since I was young and my father is my greatest role model. If I had not been a teacher, I would have been an engineer,” he said.

    In the Senior category, Kolawole Bello, the teacher of 2016 Senior category winner Ayooluwa Oguntade, triumphed over Fatai Ganiyu Babatunde and Jimoh Muyideen, both of Ota Total Academy and Yunus Olaniyi of The Ambassadors College, Ota, Ogun State. Both schools are located in Ota, Ogun State. Other teachers who fell by the way side are Kehinde Oludare of Bibo Oluwa Academy, Ilesa, Osun State and Abdul Abiodun of The Ambassadors College, Ota, Ogun State.

    Bello scored 50 points to claim the ultimate prize of a branded laptop and a plaque. “I am happy and very proud of myself. My victory is dedicated to God and my student who made me proud by being a finalist,” he told journalists outside the studio in Lagos last weekend.

    The 2017 Cowbellpedia Secondary Schools Mathematic TV Quiz continues this weekend. It will be aired to millions of viewers on DSTv Africa Magic Family Channel, AIT Network and other six television stations across the country.

    The ultimate prize in the Senior and Junior categories is N1 million each and an all-expense-paid educational excursion outside the country. The first and second runner-ups for each category will go home with N750,000 and N500,000 respectively.

    Each teacher of the 2017 champions will be awarded N400,000, while those of the first and second runner-ups will receive N300,000 and N200,000 respectively. Also, the winning schools will be rewarded with mathematics textbooks, desktop computers and printers.

    Promasidor Nigeria Limited, makers of Cowbell milk, Loya milk, Top tea and Onga food seasoning, has won the  “Best Kept Industrial Premises Award” by the Ikeja branch of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN).

    The award, under MAN’s Total Compliance Inspection Competition initiative, is aimed at encouraging members’ adherence to environmental regulations and standards, and to also improve their environmental friendliness.

    To enhance its credibility and transparency, members of the Award Committee were drawn from the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Federal Ministry of Environment and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).

     The award, under MAN’s total compliance inspection competition initiative, is aimed at encouraging members’ adherence to environmental regulations and standards, and to also improve their environmental friendliness.

     To enhance its credibility and transparency, members of the award committee were drawn from the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Federal Ministry of Environment and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).

     Others include health, safety and environment professionals in the manufacturing sector and Ikeja MAN personnel and representatives.

     Areas of inspection by the officials included external and internal premises, utilities, solid waste management, effluent treatment plant, pollution abatement, use of relevant and quality personal protective equipment, green-life and general aesthetics, government certifications, as well as general good housekeeping.

     The award committee commended PNG’s usage of marked pedestrian walk-way and adjudged the noise level in the factories to be at acceptable standard, while the company’s environmental audit report and fire certificate were found to be current and valid.

     PNG has consistently affirmed that a healthy environment is very crucial for the workforce and the growth of any business, as well as the community where it operates.

     Responding to the award, the Head Legal and Public Relations, PNL, Mr. Andrew Enahoro, said the company is unwavering in keeping to environmental regulations, stressing that “it is very essential for businesses to adhere to environmental laws in order to thrive and also for the benefit of people living within that locality.”

     PNL engages in tree planting campaign in Lagos, an initiative commended by the Lagos State Government and LASEPA.

     Enahoro further stated that there is need for collaboration between organisations and government on ways of making the society safe for living despite the threat of global warming.

     “Promasidor’s efforts in preserving its ecosystem have endeared it to its host community,” he affirmed.

  • Promasidor kicks off Cowbellpedia Maths contest

    Promasidor Nigeria Ltd, makers of Cowbell milk, has opened entries for the 2017 edition of the Cowbellpedia Mathematics TV Quiz show at a briefing.

    The firm is looking to register more than the 48,000 pupils from 9,000 schools secondary nationwide that participated in the first stage examination of the competition last year.

    Managing Director of the firm, Mr Olivier Thiry, said the competition was its way of contributing to the development of mathematics in the country.

    “Across the globe, investment in education has assumed an entirely new frontier that governments and corporate organisations have come to realize that building capacity in STEM courses, which Mathematics is a key component of, represents the driving force for development in the 21st century,” he said.

    Thiry said pupils aged 10-18 in JSS3 and SS2 were eligible to enter for the competition which promises attractive prizes.

    The best 20 nationwide would join the best 36 from each state in the second stage of the competition, which is the television quiz show.

    Star prize winners in each category (junior and senior secondary) would get N1 million and an all-expense paid trip outside the country.  Their teachers would go home with N400,000 each.  The first runners up would get N750,000 (N300,000 for their teachers), while the second runners up get N500,000 (N200,000 for their teachers).

    Like was introduced last year, each co-educational school that enters for competition must field at least two girls out of five contestants for the first stage examination.

    Juliet Ikoko, 2016 Junior Category winner, said she was a beneficiary of the initiative. She added that the competition boosted her self confidence.

    “After I won the competition, I gained more confidence in myself.  I want to thank Promasidor for opportunity and for giving a chance to the girl-child of which I am one,” said the teenager who hopes to study Medicine at the John Hopkins University, United States after her secondary education at Ambassadors School, Ota, in Ogun State.

    The Director, Quality Assurance, National Examination Council (NECO), Dr Ikechukwu Anyanwu, said the competition has added value to the quality of item writing for Mathematics.

    He said the Council gained from the way the items (questions) were crafted for the Television quiz show.

    He also said participants gain tremendously as the competition prepares them for university education.

    “The candidates don’t just compete for prizes but it allows them to get into the first year of university with ease,” he said.

    The 2016 Senior Category winner, Ayooluwa Oguntade, also of Ambassadors School, counseled pupils aspiring to win the competition not to give up.

    ‘Promasidor training broadened my knowledge’

    The first runner-up in the Promasidor Quill Awards, Olatunji Ololade, has commended Promasidor Nigeria Limited for the Thomson Foundation Summer Convergence Course, which is part of the prize for the yearly competition.

    Ololade, who just returned from Britain, after attending the course, gave the commendation during his visit to the company’s Managing Director, Olivier Thiry, in his Isolo, Lagos office.

    He said before he attended the course, he was a complete print journalist who had limited experience in contemporary journalism.

    However, Ololade described the course as unique because it gives a rare experience that does not come regularly.

    “I am seizing this opportunity again to express my heart-felt appreciation to Promasidor Nigeria Limited for giving me the privilege to attend the course. The training really broadened my horizon, which has practically changed my orientation to journalism,”he said.

    According to him, the course has widened his perspective beyond traditional journalism as he has been equipped to face competition from across the world.

    His words: “Before I travelled, I had limited experience about online journalism. I was a complete print reporter, but I discovered during the Summer Convergence Course run by Thomson Foundation and propelled by Promasidor that there was a lot more in today’s journalism profession.”

  • Promasidor marks World Teachers Day

    Promasidor Nigeria Limited, makers ofCowbell Milk, last weekend, celebrated Nigerian teachers with a special edition of Cowbellpedia Mathematics Quiz Show  to mark the 2016 World Teachers Day.

    The competition featured twelve teachers who piloted their students to the finals of the 2015 edition of the Cowbellpedia Mathematics Quiz Show.

    United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO, proclaimed 5th October to be World Teachers’ Day in 1994, celebrating the great step made for teachers on 5th October 1966, when a special intergovernmental conference convened by UNESCO in Paris adopted the UNESCO/ILO recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, in cooperation with the International Labour Organsation.

    In the last 18 years, Promasidor has been involved in education development programmes, especially the sponsorship of Mathematics competition in secondary schools in Nigeria. The objectives, according to the Managing Director of the company, Mr. Olivier Thiry, have been to awaken the consciousness and interest in mathematics among junior and senior secondary school students in Nigeria; and to improve students’ performance in Mathematics pan Nigeria.

    These were reiterated during the press briefing marking the commencement of the 2016 Cowbellpedia Secondary School Mathematics TV Quiz competition in March, 2016.

    Thiry also informed that the company significantly increased the prize money for the finals for both students and teachers. This year, the teacher of the top prize student winner will be awarded N400, 000 while teachers of 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up will go home with N300,000 and N200,000 respectively for both categories. Also, teachers of top three students at state level are given cash rewards. This is to encourage these unsung heroes that their rewards are not only in heaven but in this world too.

    Emotion was high at the special teachers’ edition of the Cowbellpedia Mathematics Television Quiz show that was aired last weekend when Mr. Isaac Oyegbile of Hallmark Secondary School, Ondo, Ondo State, beat his former Mathematics teacher, Mr. Peter OlayiwolaOyewole, to win the 2016 Cowbellpedia Mathematics Teachers’ edition (Senior Category).

    Olayiwola, a teacher from Adeyemi College of Education Demonstration Secondary School, Ondo, Ondo State, described Oyegbile as a very intelligent, humble and listening student when he taught him Mathematics in Oyo many years ago. He maintained that Oyegbile’s success is rather a success for him and a testimony of the fruit of his labour. “I feel great, there is nothing to be worried or embarrassed about. The father of the king is also a king. It is a great day for me. I am very happy deep inside my heart,” he told journalists.

    Promasidor Nigeria Limited, has concluded arrangements with the International Finance Corporation (IFC),  to inject about  $25 million  (over N8billion) into its production with a view to increasing efficiency and increase production for the benefit of Nigerians.

    Promasidor’s  Managing Director, Olivier Thiry, said the capital injection would be used to support purchases of new machinery that will enable PNL to increase efficiency, expand production and develop new products, leading to greater availability of nutritious food products in Nigeria at competitive prices.

    “This is a very competitive market for food products. We expect this investment will help us optimise production costs, enable us to reach and nourish more consumers with our affordable range of quality products. We will also target our portfolio extension by gradual integration of more locally sourced raw materials from producers in Nigeria and widening our network of distributors.”

  • Promasidor thrills fans with Cowbellpedia TV quiz

    The ongoing Cowbellpedia Mathematics Television Quiz Show has continued to generate big excitement for students, parents and millions of viewers who watch the programme every week on television stations across the country.

    The parents and other stakeholders in the education sector have also lauded Promasidor Nigeria Limited for bankrolling the initiative which is aimed at discovering and celebrating young scientists and inventors in the country

    Last weekend, one of the contestants, Jessica Austine revealed that she draws her inspiration for Mathematics when she dances.

    Austine, 13, a student of Federal Government Girls College, Owerri, Imo State explained that she loves dancing whichinspires her to solve Mathematics questions.  “I love dancing greatly. It is my hobby. When I am not solving mathematics problems, I dance. This helps me greatly whenever I go back to my mathematics,” she told journalists in Lagos last weekend.

    The soft spoken Austine who looks forward to contesting in the finals, expressed her wish to clinch the ultimate prize to honour her parents and her State. “I want to win this competition. It will be great if I do. My parents and my school will be very happy,” she said.

    Earlier, Mr. Kolawole Bello, a mathematics teacher at The Ambassador College, Ota, Ogun State advised parents on how to stem the continuous poor performance of students in mathematics.

    Bello who was speaking at the venue of the ongoing Cowbellpedia Mathematics Television Quiz Show in Lagos explained that parents have a role to play in sustaining the interest of their children in the subject. He added that as much as teachers are trying these days to encourage students in mathematics and in the sciences, the support and encouragement from parents will go a long way to complement the efforts of teachers.

    Not a few parents believe that all efforts to see their ward succeed in the competition will be worth the while as the ultimate prize for this year is one million naira and an all expenses paid educational excursion outside the country. The teacher of the winning students will receive four hundred thousand naira.

    Promasidor partners NECO to expand COWBELLPEDIA reach

    With the National Examinations Council (NECO) coming on board to endorse and conduct the first stage of the Cowbellpedia Secondary School Mathematics TV Quiz show, Promasidor Nigeria Limited is expecting to reach more participants this year.

    Festus Tettey, Head of Marketing at Promasidor said at a briefing on Tuesday that the qualifying examination for this year’s competition holding on March 19, 2016 will be conducted by NECO because of its experience in conducting public examination, such as the Senior School Certificate Examination twice yearly.

    He also expressed confidence that the integrity the competition has sponsored for 18 years will not be compromised under NECO in response to concerns about examination leakages.

    “We have talked about leakages with NECO and they have assured us it won’t happen.  Working with NECO is to extend our reach. We have been a little short in reaching all parts of the country,” he said.

    The competition is open to pupils aged 10 – 18 years in JSS3 and SS2 in both public and private secondary schools in Nigeria.  Tettey said each school can now present five candidates for each category (junior and senior secondary).  However, he said two in each set must be girls to stimulate the love for the subject among girls.

    The firm has also developed an online registration portal (www.cowbellpedia.ng) for the competition as against the manual registration used in the past.

    After the first stage examination, 54 pupils in each category (the best 20 nationwide, and the best in each state) will feature in the Cowbellpedia Television Show.

    Managing Director, Promasidor, Mr. Olivier Thiry, said the company has increased the prize money for the top three winners in both categories and their teachers this year.  The first in both categories will now get N1 million – up from N750,000; the second place, N750,000, and the third, N500,000.  The top three teachers will get between N400,000 and N200,000.

    “All these improvements are to underscore Promasidor’s efforts to provide a credible platform that discovers, recognizes and rewards excellence in Mathematics, a critical component of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in Nigeria,” he said.

  • Promasidor thrills students

    STUDENTS of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) were thrilled at the Promasidor show tagged: Swag, held on the campus.

    The students filed into the Ekpo Convocation Hall of the institution to witness the event, which started at 4pm and anchored by Lorenzo Menakaya, a radio presenter.

    It featured a raffle draw, where students won laptops and i-Pads.

    The show also featured talent hunt and choreographed dance by several groups and motivational talks.

    A student, Emeka Igboeli, told CAMPUSLIFE: “I am excited because the show relieved us of academic stress.’’
