Recruitment: PSC extends deadline for two weeks, receives over 400,000 applications

The Police Service Commission (PSC) and Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Monday announced a two-week extension for the ongoing recruitment of 50,000 Constables.

The application portal, which opened on 15th December 2025, has now been extended to close on 8th February 2026.

This decision followed the receipt of over 400,000 applications and a review showing significant disparities in state participation.

According to a statement issued by Head, Protocol and Public Affairs, PSC, Torty Kalu, while some states like Adamawa, Benue, and Kaduna have high application numbers, states such as Lagos, Ogun, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, and Anambra have notably lower submissions.

He said the extension aims to ensure equitable representation nationwide. All eligible Nigerians, particularly from the above-mentioned states with fewer applications, are strongly encouraged to apply via the official portal: www.npfapplication.psc.gov.ng.

Kalu said, “State Governments, Local Government Councils, sociocultural organizations, religious bodies, community leaders, and other stakeholders are strongly encouraged to mobilize and sensitize eligible citizens within their jurisdictions to apply before the new deadline.

“The PSC and NPF reaffirm their commitment to a fair and transparent recruitment process”.

PSC debunks claim over alleged delay in promotion of police inspectors

The Police Service Commission (PSC) on Thursday refuted claims of undue delay in the promotion of police inspectors following the 2025 Departmental Selection Board (DSB) exercise.

PSC described a recent online report as misleading, speculative, and based on unverified anonymous sources.

According to a statement issued by Head, Protocol and Public Affairs, Police Service Commission, Torty Njoku Kalu, the Commission reacted to an article titled; “We’ve Done Everything Required’: Police Inspectors Protest Delayed Promotion Months After Passing 2025 Board Exercise.”

The PSC said the publication misrepresented its procedures and falsely portrayed the Commission as being silent and unresponsive.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, fairness, and merit-based promotions within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), stressing that all promotions are conducted strictly in line with established guidelines and statutory provisions.

According to the Kalu, officers who participated in the 2025 DSB exercise were duly informed through official channels on the status of their evaluations, contrary to claims in the report.

“The assertion of ‘total silence’ or ‘no explanation’ from the PSC or Force Headquarters is incorrect,” the statement said, noting that the Commission maintains comprehensive records of official communications.

Officers with concerns were advised to seek clarification through their respective commands or directly from the PSC.

The Commission also dismissed claims that inspector-level promotions had been deliberately stalled while senior officers were promoted within weeks, explaining that promotions across different ranks follow distinct procedural tracks.

It noted that senior officer promotions often involve fewer candidates and streamlined processes, while inspector-level promotions require more extensive verification due to the larger number of officers involved.

According to the PSC, the 2025 DSB exercise conducted in December 2025 was successfully concluded, and the processing of results is ongoing in line with approved timelines.

The Commission added that efforts had been intensified to finalize and announce the promotions within the coming days, in line with administrative and fiscal requirements.

Addressing suggestions of widespread demoralization among junior officers, the PSC described such claims as speculative and unreflective of the general mood within the Force.

It stated that no formal complaints had been received through institutional channels, urging officers to utilize established grievance procedures rather than resorting to media platforms.

Under the leadership of its chairman, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, and in collaboration with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, the PSC reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and career progression of all police personnel.

The Commission highlighted its record of promoting thousands of officers in recent years, assuring that due diligence in the promotion process is aimed at ensuring integrity and equity, not delay or neglect.

The PSC further urged media organizations to verify information with the Commission before publishing reports capable of undermining public confidence in national institutions.

Kalu advised members of the public and serving officers seeking accurate information to contact the PSC Public Affairs Section or visit the Commission’s official website: www.psc.gov.ng.

  • Why CP Igwe, AIG Owohunwa, 192 officers can’t be reinstated — PSC

Why CP Igwe, AIG Owohunwa, 192 officers can’t be reinstated — PSC

The Police Service Commission (PSC) on Wednesday explained why AIG Idowu Owohunwa, CP Benneth Igwe, DCP Simon Lough, and 191 other officers who were retired over alleged age falsification may not be reinstated.

This came after the National Industrial Court, Abuja Division, ordered the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately reinstate the 196 officers from Cadet ASP Force Courses 18, 19, and 20, following the February 2025 scandal.

The officers challenged their forced retirement from the police force despite neither completing 35 years of service nor reaching the mandatory age of 60.

The suit cited a March 4, 2025, video and a memo, which directed the immediate retirement of certain senior officers over an age falsification scandal, which the officers consistently denied.

Responding in a statement, the PSC spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, acknowledged the judgment of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria between ACP Chinedu Ambrose Emengaha and the Police Service Commission in Suit No. NICN/ABJ/28/2025.

The judgment read, “It is hereby declared that the date of first appointment into the service of the Claimants, as contained in their respective appointment letters, is not subject to a review by the Defendants.

“It is also declared that the members of Cadet ASP (Force Entrants) of Courses 18, 19, and 20 who are yet to serve 35 years of pensionable service or have not attained the age of 60 years, are by virtue of the said judgment of the National Industrial Court delivered by Hon. Justice O.O Oyewunmi in Suit No. NICN/ABJ/345/2019 – ACP Ambrose Emengaha and ORS V. Police Service Commission and 2 ORS, and NICN/ABJ/353/20219 – CSP SUNDAY Okuguni and ORS V. Police Service Commission and 2 ORS, excluded from the decision of the 1st Defendant at her first extraordinary meeting of the 6th Management Board held on 31st January 2025, approving the immediate retirement of those officers who have spent 35 years in service or above 60 years in age.

“A declaration is made stating that by virtue of the said judgments of the National Industrial Court affirming the date of appointment of the Claimants as Cadet Officers as a fresh appointment, the said appointment is not a merger of service.

“It is hereby declared that the Defendants cannot, by any decision, set aside the valid and subsisting judgments of this Court delivered by Hon. Justice O.O Oyewunmi in Suit No. NICN/ABJ/345/2019 – ACP Ambrose Emengaha and ORS V. Police Service Commission and 2 ORS, and NICN/ABJ/353/20219 – CSP Sunday Okuguni and ORS V. Police Service Commission and 2 ORS, same having been implemented by the Defendants since 29th July 2021.

“An Order is made setting aside the 1st Defendant’s directive to the 2nd and 3rd Defendants contained in the press release of 31st January 2025, as it concerns Courses 18, 19, and 20 Force Entrants.

“An Order of perpetual injunction is also made restraining the Defendants jointly and severally from unlawfully and illegally reviewing the issue of dates of appointment of Cadet ASPs of Force Entrants Courses 18, 19, and 20 already settled by the Judgments of the National Industrial Court.

“An Order of perpetual injunction is also made restraining the Defendants jointly and severally from unlawfully and illegally retiring any member of Force Entrants Courses 18, 19, and 20 who have not attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 years.”

Ani noted, “Nothing in the above decision of the court specifically orders the reinstatement of the officers as alleged by the Sahara Reporters, or specifically mentions any other officer.”

“The public should note further that the Commission is studying the decision of the Court with a view to taking appropriate steps, including exercising its right to appeal.

“Furthermore, the Commission notes with much concern that the officers specifically referred to in the Sahara Reporters news filed a separate suit before the same court, that is: AIG Idowu Owohunwa, AIG Benneth Igwe, DCP Simon Lough VS Police Service Commission AND 7 ORS with Suit No. NICN/ABJ/88/2025 is challenging their retirement from the Nigeria Police Force, which is awaiting the attention of the Court.

“It is important to conclude this Statement by restating that the Commission is a responsible organization with one of its cardinal principles as ‘obedience to the rule of law’, and it will not do anything to disparage the sanctity of the judiciary.”
