  • Why your pension was stopped, short-paid or delayed, PTAD explains

Why your pension was stopped, short-paid or delayed, PTAD explains

I was informed that my pension was stopped because I am operating Joint Account. What is the reason behind that?

It is because the payment of pension should only be made directly to individual pensioners.  A second or third party is not allowed to have access to your pension. Secondly, in the event that a pensioner dies, the pension should be stopped and having a joint account will mean continuous payment and withdrawal of the pension.

I am a downsized Pensioner and my Gratuity was short paid. Where can I lay my complaint?

Downsized pensioners who were short paid should direct their complaint to the Bureau of Public Service Reform (BPSR) or the Account General’s Office

I have been verified since 2015, I have never received pension, when will I be paid?

If you have been verified since 2015 and have not been enrolled into the monthly pension payroll, you may contact us through any of our various channels so we can find out the reason for your non – enrolment.

I was employed same year with a colleague and retired same year but he earns more than I am earning, why?

There are several variables that determines what a pensioner earns at retirement, e.g. length of service, step at retirement, rank at retirement, date of retirement. If a pensioner feels he is being short paid, he/she should fill out our complaint form in any of our Zonal offices.

I have Federal Share of pension in my computation sheet but, your office said because I started work in Primary School I am therefore not entitled to Federal Share. How do I get my Federal Share?

Primary School Teachers who began work with local authorities are referred to the Local Government Pension Board for their federal share of pension. However primary school teachers that began working with missions are entitled to receive their federal share of pension from PTAD.

Some people do call that we should pay money into their Account before they can process our file. Are they really from your office?

No. No staff of the Directorate will demand for payment before processing your retirement benefit. Such request should be reported immediately to the office.

What are the cut off dates for Pure Federal Pensioners and State with Federal Share pensioners?

The cut-off date for the pure federal pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme is 30th June, 2007 while the cut of date for the State pensioners with Federal share is 31st March, 2011. Also the State Pensioners with Federal Share must have started work on or before 31st March, 1976.

When are you paying our pension increase since the Salaries of workers have been increased?

The Federal Government has not approved any increase in pension as at today. Once it is approved and funds are released for the payment, the Directorate will implement the increase for the Pensioners without delay.

4.Why has ES PTAD, M s. Tolulope Abiodun Odunaiya, remained incommunicado over both 27months CP A and August, 2024 as effective date for N32000 minimum pension, even with N850b?-The Nation Newspaper, Wednesday, 10:12:2025.

ANNONYMOUS: Good day, I have been complaining of deduction of N9000 from my pension allowance since September last year. Kindly use your office to rescue me from this situation. l have written several times for correction to no avail, why.

PTAD: Dear PTAD PENSIONER, please send your verification slip to our email complaints@ptad.gov.ng to enable us to investigate and respond further. However, note that PTAD obtained a directive for the re-implementation of the CPA based on grade level in line with the clarification from the NSIWC before implementing the new 20 per cent / 28 per cent increment as applicable. The CPA which was as a result of the minimum wage approval in April 2019 was implemented in May 2021 based on pay-band application with subsequent payment of 24 months arrears covering from April 2019 to April 2021. It is, therefore, instructive to mention that arrears reconciliation arising from the re-implementation of the CPA based on grade level is set aside pending further directive.

The clarification from the NSIWC which revised the implementation of the CPA to Grade level was taken into cognisance and accordingly implemented on the payroll before the application of the new pension increment of 20-28 per cent as applicable which will take effect from September 2024.

Further to the above, the Executive Secretary gave directive to pay the 20/ 28 per cent pension increment arrears to only the pensioners whose monthly pension have been correctly computed and implemented as per the August payroll.

In line with the directive of the Executive Secretary, the Department reviewed the August 2024 pension payroll to ascertain that only pensioners who are on their correctly computed monthly pension are paid the 20 – 28 per cent pension increment arrears and thereafter identified and excluded the following categories of pensioners:

    • Pensioners on the payroll with inherited monthly pension and whose monthly pension entitlement is yet to be computed to date;

    • Pensioners on the payroll with inherited monthly pension but whose monthly pension entitlement have been computed but not yet implemented;

    • Pensioners on the payroll with monthly pension figure that appears to be higher than the maximum monthly pension for their Grade Level.

  • Too frail to travel? Here’s how pensioners can get verified without visiting PTAD offices

Too frail to travel? Here’s how pensioners can get verified without visiting PTAD offices

Many pensioners and their families have questions about verification, complaints, and accessing benefits, especially when age, illness, or distance make travel difficult. The Nation explains clearly and simply pension verification, complaints and benefits

I do not live close to any zonal office, I am frail and cannot travel. How do I get verified?

Yes, you can still be verified.

A pensioner who is unable to travel due to age or health conditions may apply for Mobile Verification. To do this, the pensioner should send the required documents through a third party with a formal request.

The documents include: A full-sized recent photograph; complete contact details

Career documents; a medical report confirming a condition that prevents travel

Once the documents are reviewed and found satisfactory, a team of mobile verification officers will be deployed to verify the pensioner at home.

My spouse is bedridden and cannot attend verification. What should I do?

The same Mobile Verification process applies. You are required to gather all the documents listed above and proceed to the nearest zonal office to formally notify the Team Lead. Arrangements will then be made for officers to visit your spouse at home for verification and subsequent enrolment for Monthly Pension (MP).

My husband was a pensioner but has passed away. The bank has frozen his account. How can I access his pension and outstanding benefits?

The Next of Kin is required to formally notify the office of the pensioner’s death. A written notification should be addressed to the Executive Secretary, attention to the Director of the relevant Department, and accompanied by documents such as: Letter/Gazette of First Appointment; Letter/Gazette of Confirmation of Appointment; Letter of Last Promotion; Letter of Retirement; Death Certificate (from a Government Hospital or National Population Commission); Bank statement of the deceased from date of retirement to date of death; Letters of Administration issued by a court of competent jurisdiction; Computation sheet (for State pensioners with Federal share); Severance payslip (for downsized pensioners); Joint account statement of the Next of Kin; BVN printout of the Next of Kin; Recognisable means of identification; Affidavit of Next of Kin; Marriage certificate (where the claimant is the spouse).

Where necessary, the Directorate will formally write to the bank to facilitate the release of any accrued funds. All outstanding benefits due to the deceased pensioner will then be computed and paid to the eligible Next of Kin.

When will in-house verification start in all zonal offices?

Plans are currently underway to extend in-house verification to additional zonal offices. For now, pensioners can access in-house verification services at the Abuja and Lagos offices.

What bank statement period is required for verification or complaints?

A duly stamped and signed NUBAN bank statement on the bank’s official letterhead is required.

Where a complaint exists: From the date of retirement or date the complaint arose to the present.

Where there is no complaint: Bank statement for the last six months only.

Do I need to use my BVN or other bank details like Debit Card Numbers or PIN for conducting the I AM ALIVE exercise?

No, you do not. Only your PTAD pensioner number and account number is required. PTAD will never ask you for your, BVN, PIN or ATM card number.

If I complete my IAM ALIVE after my past due date, will my suspension from payroll be lifted?

Yes. Your suspension will be lifted automatically and you will be restored to payroll for payment in the next payroll cycle.

I have been restored to the payroll following my suspension period, will I receive my arrears for the months I was on suspension?

Yes. Your arrears for every month/payment cycle missed will be automatically computed and added to your pension for the next month.

Please contact PTAD through our call centre, any of our state offices or our Abuja contact centre.

If I try the facial option and I am unsuccessful and I want to do the alternative fingerprint option, where can I go to get it done because I will require assistance?

You can go to a business centre that has a fingerprint device or purchase a fingerprint device for use on your desktop. Go to I Am Alive portal on PTAD website and download the SDK feature.

If I am not successful with facial option, but successful with the fingerprint option, what could be the reason for this?

This may be because your face could not be detected by the system, or your photo on the database is not very clear and needs to be updated.

    Pensioners welcome N55.9b PTAD disbursement

    • Call for final clearance of outstanding arrears

Federal Government pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) have reacted to the announcement by the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) that it disbursed N55.9 billion as monthly pensions and outstanding arrears in December 2025, describing the development as a major relief after months of anxiety, while urging government to swiftly clear the few arrears still outstanding.

The pensioners, drawn from different pension departments, said the payment which covered monthly pensions as well as arrears arising from the N32,000 increment and percentage increases of 10.66 per cent and 12.95 per cent has brought renewed hope to thousands of retirees struggling with rising living and healthcare costs.

Several pensioners who confirmed receipt of arrears said the payment had eased financial pressure during the festive season.

“For the first time in a long while, many of us were able to breathe in December. The arrears helped us settle medical bills and family obligations,” said a retired civil servant under the Civil Service Pension Department (CSPD).

Pensioners also welcomed PTAD’s disclosure that over N42.5 billion was paid as arrears to more than 165,000 beneficiaries across the Civil Service, Parastatals, Defunct Agencies, Police, Customs, Immigration, Prisons, and Tertiary Education and Health sectors, describing the breakdown as a sign of improved transparency.

However, retirees in the Parastatals Pension Department (PaPD) and Tertiary Education and Health Department (TEHD), where one month arrears remains outstanding, urged PTAD and the Federal Government to act quickly to complete the payments.

“We appreciate what has been paid, but at our age, even one month makes a big difference. We hope the promise to clear it will be fulfilled without delay,” a retired lecturer said.

Pensioners also expressed appreciation for the payment of gratuity and death benefits to next-of-kin of deceased retirees, noting that such payments provide dignity and relief to bereaved families.

“Families of deceased pensioners often suffer quietly. Seeing death benefits paid gives confidence that the system is improving,” said Uche Madueke,  a pensioner.

While commending PTAD and the Federal Government for the scale of the December disbursement, pensioners stressed that sustainability and predictability of payments remain critical.

They called for continued release of funds to PTAD to ensure arrears do not accumulate again, and urged government to fast-track other approved welfare measures, including pension harmonisation and health insurance coverage for DBS pensioners.

Overall, pensioners said the N55.9 billion disbursement represents a significant step toward restoring trust, but emphasized that confidence will be fully rebuilt only when all arrears are completely cleared and payments remain consistent.

As one retiree summed it up: “This payment shows progress. What we ask now is consistency, completion, and compassion for senior citizens who have served this country.”

Recall that PTAD had last week Friday said it has successfully disbursed a total sum of N55.9 billion as monthly pensions and pension arrears to eligible pensioners and Next-of-Kins of deceased pensioners under the DBS in December, 2025.

Speaking on this milestone payments, the Executive Secretary of PTAD; Tolulope Odunaiya, stated that this payment covers N13,411,400,362.87 as monthly pensions across all operations pension departments, including diaspora pensioners, while N42,501,348,236.06 was paid as pension arrears.

She disclosed that the payments reflect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of senior citizens, in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

She further reaffirmed the Directorate’s commitment to clearing the remaining one month arrears owed to PaPD and TEHD, while continuing to implement initiatives aimed at improving the welfare and overall well-being of DBS Pensioners.

“The arrears payment covers outstanding obligations arising from the N32,000 pension increment, as well as the 10.66per cent and 12.95per cent pension increments, in addition to other accrued pension arrears, gratuity, and death benefits owed to eligible beneficiaries”, she said:.
