Rangers to improve Imama’s N1m a month contract

Top officials have insisted that coach Imama Amapakabo will get more than the one million Naira-a-month he received this past season so as to lead Rangers in next year’s CAF Champions League.

Imama’s contract ended on the day he led Rangers to win the Nigeria league after their last triumph in 1984.

He and his players took massive pay cuts before they could rewrite history.

The former goalkeeper has already been linked with South African club Chippa United, Enyimba and Kano Pillars.

However, Enugu State sports commissioner Charles Ndukwe insisted there is no coaching vacancy in Rangers as they are willing to better whatever offer Imama will receive.

“There is no vacancy in Rangers. Imama is not going anywhere,” declared a confident Ndukwe.

“And whatever any club is offering him, we will better it.

“He is already planning to bring down his family to Enugu from Port Harcourt.”

Rangers general manager, Paul Chibuzor also maintained Imama will still be the coach of the newly crowned Nigeria champions.

Enugu Rangers have disclosed that they won’t delay with their preparations for the 2017 Caf Champions League and that they are working on submitting their programme for the competition to the Enugu Government towards getting the equipment, the right personnel and logistics ready so as to make appreciable impact in Africa as the reigning Nigerian champions.

The Flying Antelopes smashed El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri 4-0 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu last Sunday to claim their first league title in 32 years in style and few days after their heroic feat, the general manager of the club, Paul Ozor said that Rangers won’t delay at all with their build up to the foremost club competition on the continent.

Ozor told Goal: “We have won the league but we do not want to rest on our oars. We are going extra mile to commence preparation for the Caf Champions League and we are doing so to ensure that we get all the necessary tools and the wherewithal to work with to make a memorable outing in the competition. We won’t make a repeat of what happened in 2013 when we were edged out on technical ground.

“We are working on submitting the comprehensive list of what we would be needing for the competition to the Government and we are working on getting some funds on our own too.

“We want our fans to enjoy the continental matches just like they did while watching us win the league. We are on course.”

Rangers won the league title with 63 points from 36 matches and they will hoist Nigeria’s flag in the money spinning competition for the first time since 2013.

Imama: The book, Rangers is closed for me

History-making coach, Imama Amapakabo has announced his contract with Rangers ended on Sunday after he led the club to win the Nigeria league after 32 years.

The 43-year-old former goalkeeper said: “The book, Rangers is closed. We will see if we will open another book again. On the pitch on Sunday, I closed the book and I tried to see which is the next book to read. We have been able to read this particular book, it is closed now. We will open another book.”

The former Nigeria U-17 international celebrated his first season in charge of a premier league club by leading Rangers to a major trophy after a 32-year wait.

He has now been linked with South African club, Chippa United, deposed champions Enyimba, Kano Pillars and Sunshine Stars.

He said: ”I have been linked with many clubs, but I will just sit back and let God lead me. God leads and I follow.”

He further admitted that personally it was a tough and rough road to victory for him.

“When I started out, nobody believed in me but they did not stop from giving me a chance,” recalled the coach, who has assisted the likes of Solomon Ogbeide, John Obuh and Kadiri Ikhana. I am a young man, I am not from this clime (Eastern Nigeria), I did not play for Rangers…they were factors and they were tough to deal with. I was an unknown quantity, but here we are today.”

Rangers must sustain their NPFL feat, urges Onigbinde

Former Nigeria coach, Adegboye Onigbinde has urged newly crowned Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, Enugu Rangers to sustain their new feat.

The Flying Antelopes ended their 32-years wait for a silverware in style by  walloping El Kanemi Warriors 4-0 in a Week 38 match played at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium on Sunday.

And the FIFA instructor has challenged them to put in place the best strategies to sustain their dominance.

“I want to congratulate them [Enugu Rangers] for their effort and great achievement. It takes strong determination, discipline and focus to achieve such success, ” Onigbinde told Goal.

“I hope they will be regular at achieving this performance again and come back to their permanent position in the league. This can be best achieved through proper planning, programming, coaching and logistics,” he said.

Rangers win Premier League 32 years after

Rangers claimed the league title yesterday after 32 years wait.

It was their seventh title as they equaled the seven-time record achieved in the 2014/2015 by Enyimba of Aba.

Rangers last night beat El Kanemi Warrior of Maiduguri 4-0 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu. The win took them to 63 points from 38 matches, three ahead of challengers Rivers United FC of Port Harcourt.

River United beat Akwa United of Uyo at home 2-1 to end up in second place.

Struggling Lagos-based MFM FC escaped relegation by defeating visiting Ifeabyi Uba of Nnewi 1-0 at the Agege Stadium.

The Rangers victory was marred by a serious leg injury to  Ifeanyi Egwim.

Egwim, who replaced Ocheme Edoh in the 83rd minute, was bearing down on goal in the 88th minute, when he was brought down.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that goalkeeper Yekeen Kazeem, who was exposed, having been defenceless, advanced on him and fell the towering forward.

As referee Ferdinand Udoh pointed at the penalty kick spot and handed the goalkeeper a red card, Egwim’s two teammates who ran towards him to bring him up started crying.

Other players who ran to the spot just inside the El-Kanemi Warriors box, placed their hands on their heads.

Even Referee Udoh could not bear to look further, and his gestures thereafter showed the extent of the injury.

Medical personnel quickly called for the ambulance which took Egwim, who looked to have been injured just below the knee, away for further treatment.

The mood was further expressed minutes later after Chisom Egbuchulam scored the resultant penalty kick in the 90th minute for the match’s fourth goal and to complete his hat-trick.

He refused to jubilate the goal, even after some teammates rushed to him. He lifted his shirt to his face and bent over double to weep.

It was a sad end to a day which had looked promising for Rangers from the game’s opening minute when they started to dominate proceedings. .

Bobby Clement’s shot was handled by Abraham Audu for a second minute penalty kick which Egbuchulam expertly scored for the game’s first goal.

The Maiduguri-based Warriors seemed ready to spoil the much-awaited party at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, in their fightback.

Obinna Nwobodo could have extended the lead in the 29th minute with his shot from about 28 metres, but goalkeeper Kazeem’s acrobatic response prevented that.

The fluidity of the hosts’ offensive play was a beauty, and it yielded further result in the 40th minute when Osas Okoro finished off a good move from the right flank.

Egbuchulam scored his second and the game’s third in the 64th minute, before the 90th minute penalty kick which gave him his hat-trick and took his league season tally to 16.

The victory threw Enugu city into a frenzy. People trooped to the streets around the stadium in jubilation.  Drinking spots made brisk business

Among the record crowd that watched the match was Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

Rangers had already wrapped up victory 2 weeks ago having ganeered enough points that gave a 5 points margin between them and the runner up.

The elated governor said:  “We thank the God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob and the awesome God of David who made it possible that after 32 years in the wilderness, our prayers and dreams came true and Rangers International Football Club of Enugu are Champions again.

“We pray that they remain champions for a long time in Jesus Name.

“We thank the Nigerian Football Federation, the League Management Company for their leadership and we thank the management and the players of Rangers for reviving the famous Rangers spirit and for making the club great again.

“We thank all our supporters across the country more especially, the good people of Enugu State, for their fervent and unceasing prayers for this day of glory.

“As your servant and your governor, I hereby on your behalf dedicate this trophy to the Almighty God –for indeed, Enugu is truly in the hands of God.”

Rangers’ chief coach Imama Amapakabo said: “It’s unfortunate that the whole season campaign had to end on somehow sad note with the last minute injury on substitute, Ifeanyi Egwim. However, we are thankful to God that Enugu Rangers are champions of the 2015/16 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

“This glorious performance happened after anxious waiting for a whole 32 years. The players have been exceptionally wonderful from start to finish and they truly imbide the catchword campaign ‘believe’.

“I’m excited beyond word and need to sleep and wake up as well as pinch myself severally to be sure that what is going on at the moment is not mere dream but reality.

“I know we were champions after the hard fought win at Ikorodu United but I wanted us to be pronounced officially as champions after the final day clash against El Kanemi Warriors.

“I’m happy winning the top-flight title in my first stint as coach of Enugu Rangers. I want to sleep over what is going on right now perhaps when I wake up, the celebration will start in full swing,” said the former Enyimba coach

With this feat, Rangers’ players and coaches are poised to share N40 million earmarked for the NPFL champions by the league management.

Giwa FC, Ikorodu United and Warri Wolves have been relegated from the top division.

However, the status of Heartland FC of Owerri, which abandoned its last league game against Plateau United in Jos, will be determined by the league management.

Ugwuanyi, Ekweremadu charges Rangers for NPFL title

GOV. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has charged players of Enugu Rangers International Football club not to be complacent about its status as the potential Nigeria  Professional Football League champions, but tackle today’s final match against El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri with all seriousness and commitment to be able to win the game out rightly.

Gov. Ugwuanyi in a morale boosting message to the players said that the people of the state were expectant to see Rangers win the match and break the jinx of 32 years without a trophy.

The governor reminded the team of the significant of the trophy to the people of the state, saying that the God appointed time has come for the club to shine and rekindle the confidence of its fans as the pride of the East.

While wishing them goodluck in today’s match, Gov. Ugwuanyi prayed God to crown their efforts with a resounding victory as super champions .

Similarly, Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has charged the Rangers International Football Club of Enugu to shun any form of complacence and go for the jugular of the El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri on the last day of their Nigeria Premier League, NPL, title campaign this season.

A statement by his media aide, Uche Anichukwu, said that Ekweremadu stated this in his goodwill message to the Flying Antelopes of Enugu ahead of their season’s decider at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, today.

It said that Senator Ekweremadu said while the odds, no doubt, favoured Rangers, the team must go all out to achieve an emphatic victory and win the league on a high note.

He said: “I want to commend Rangers International for coming this far, ready to break what appears like a 32-year jinx despite the challenges. I urge the team to go all out to not only win the league title, but also to do so on a resounding note by drubbing the El Kanemi Warriors”.

League Title: Rangers order special wine to celebrate victory

Rangers Football Club chief coach, Imama Amapakabo has revealed that a special wine has been oredered to celebrate the triumph of the flying antelopes as the 2015/16 Nigeria Football Professional League (NFPL) champion ahead of this Sunday’s clash against El-Kanemi.

Speaking to Sportinglife over the telephone, the tactician said the success behind the team’s success was due to the decision of the management to retain 80% of its squad used last season and the addition of a few players to strengthen the team.

He also added that he had in his library all the match tapes of all the Premier league clubs which he always watched with his players on the eve of every match pending on whom they were playing against.

Amapakabo confessed that Ikorodu United remained his hardest game so far in the league saying they almost spoiled his dream of lifting the trophy with their pace and counter attack.  ” I was afraid in the second stanza with the way Ikorodu boys were penetrating our defence. The boys are good and I have spotted two players that can be of use in our quest for CAF Champions League competition,” said Amapakabo.

The coach told Sportinglife that after the season he will rest for two weeks. He ruled out the possibility of dumping the flying antelopes.

  • Rangers win NPFL title

    Rangers win NPFL title

Enugu Rangers  have won the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title to cap a fairytale season, with Rivers United’s failure to beat Abia Warriors meaning the Flying Antelopes can no longer be caught.

Imama Amapakabo’s men could have waited for the last game of the season against El Kanemi Warriors on October 2, but Rivers United were held to a 0-0 draw by relegation-threatened Abia Warriors, while Wikki Tourists lost 1-0 against Shooting Stars.

The Flying Antelopes lead closest challengers, Rivers United by three points but with superior goals difference, and it will be an impossible mission for Stanley Eguma’s men to record a 5-0 away at Akwa United on the last day– having in mind that they have struggled away from home this season.

Thus, the Flying Antelopes are now champions after Sunday’s 2-1 victory against Ikorodu United at the MKO Abiola Stadium.

After a gloomy outing last season that saw them narrowly avoiding the drop, Enugu Rangers began the 2015/2016 campaign on a blistering form as they sent warning signals to opposing teams.

Enyimba, Ifeanyi Ubah FC and Kano Pillars – considered the most likely title considered – all suffered inconsistent form to leave Rangers, Wikki Tourist and Rivers United to compete for the title.

Nothing can stop us creating history, says Rangers’ Egbuchulam

DESPITE  Enugu Rangers’ 2-1 loss to Shooting Stars in the Match Day 35 of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) on Saturday, explosive winger Chisom Egbuchulam is upbeat on the title aspirations of the Flying Antelopes.

Egbuchulam, who grabbed a consolation for Rangers, stated that the setback won’t stop his team from breaking the 32-year jinx in the top flight.

“Nothing can stop us from writing our names in the history books. We are going to win the trophy by the grace of God at the end of the campaign,” Egbuchulam told Goal.

“Rangers haven’t won the league title since 1984. That’s too far for a big club like ours. To some people the loss to Shooting Stars in Ibadan is a setback but we aren’t even thinking about that and have moved on. Anyone who writes us off is doing so at his own peril because we are overcomers.

“We are focused and looking at our three remaining matches against Sunshine Stars, Ikorodu United and El-Kanemi Warriors,” he said.

Rangers are second on the NPFL table with 54 points from 33 matches, two points adrift leaders Rivers United, who play away to Wikki Tourists this weekend.

  • Why Rangers lost – Imama

    Why Rangers lost – Imama

Rangers international head coach, Imama Amapakabo has said he was disappointed with his side’s 2-1 defeat to Shooting Stars in Saturday’s Nigeria Professional Football league match.

The Enugu based team, who are gunning for their first title in 32 years drew first blood, but Gbenga Ogunbote’s men scored twice later in the game to pick all three points.

“I just want to calm down and reflect on today’s game because I don’t want to talk so I won’t put my team in trouble,” Amapakabo told Goal.

The former Warri Wolves gaffer said he has pity on his players whose efforts are being shortchanged by a must win syndrome in the NPFL.

“I sometimes feel for my players because they put in so much but their efforts are being short-changed by some people.

“I feel sorry not because I lost, I feel sorry for football and the state at which it is going in this country, but I don’t want to be seen as a crying baby coach.

“Three games to go and I can tell you  we are going to play, two home games and one away, and we just want to play, we will go back home and keep pushing it until the very last minute.

“Right now from my calculations, we are second on the log, and we’ll keep pushing it.

“If Rangers had played the league like every other teams with the mind set of winning at home at all cost, that saved Shooting stars playing at home because they got a last minute penalty to equalise against us, but like I said, I just want to enjoy football and keep on working harder everyday,” he said.

  • Rivers go top, Rangers, Wikki, in tight title race

Rivers go top, Rangers, Wikki, in tight title race

RIVERS United are the new leaders of the Nigeria league after they came from behind to beat Warri Wolves 3-1, while IfeanyiUbah beat Akwa United to move to third on the table.

Rivers United now have 56 points from 33 matches, while Enugu Rangers slipped to second place after they lost 2-1 at Shooting Stars.

IfeanyiUbah were very much at home after they extended their home invincibility after they stopped Akwa United 2-0.

They have 53 points and leap frog Wikki, who slip to fourth on the table.

There were also away losses for front runners Wikki Tourists and champions Enyimba.

Wikki lost 2-1 at Nasarawa United after a stoppage time winner by Aminu Kadir, while Enyimba fell 1-0 at Niger Tornadoes courtesy of a penalty goal by Solomon Owello.

The Tornadoes vs Enyimba game was full of drama – Enyimba midfielder Dare Ojo was sent off and an Enyimba official dashed into the pitch to punch the referee.

Kevin Itoya stunned the fans in Port Harcourt when he gave Warri Wolves the lead after 28 minutes.

However, home team Rivers United fought back to draw level six minutes later through Godwin Obinze.

Bernard Ovoke then put Rivers United in front after 40 minutes, before Guy Kuemian scored a third goal for ‘Pride of Rivers’ two minutes from time.
