    `Xenophobic Lagos

Xenophobic Lagos — quite a mouthful, isn’t it?

But it sort of echoes Victorian Lagos, a book by ace poet and literary critic, Prof. Michael J. Echeruo, on the Lagos of new settlers: Europeans; and repatriated former slaves from Sierra Leone and Brazil, from mid-19th century; as against the aborigines of Eko.

The inspiration for this piece came from Femi Macaulay, co-columnist of The Nation, and scion of the Macaulay family of Lagos, one of those 19th century settlers.

In two straight offerings, “From megacity to metacity” (March 31) and “Fashola and fallacy of failure” (April 7), Femi beamed his searchlight on the 6th Herbert Macaulay Memorial Lecture and Merit Award, held on March 22 in Lagos.

Creeping xenophobia, by Lagos indigenes, oozed from both pieces, like some bad blood from a painful boil. It all issued from alleged marginalisation of Lagos indigenes, who complain of being elbowed out of opportunities in their own land.

The March 31 piece was a pan-Eko complaint of marginalisation. The April 7 piece was an intra-Lagos partisan manoeuvre, hiding behind Lagos nationalism, to twist Governor Babatunde Fashola’s rallying cry: “Eko o ni baje” (Lagos won’t go to seeds) to “Eko o ni baje ju bayi lo” (Lagos won’t degenerate beyond this point); suggesting the governor has done nothing to improve Lagos. The absurdity of such a claim is patent. But then, politicians must play politics!

Still, the irony of xenophobic sentiments issuing from a Herbert Macaulay merit award was clearly lost on the participants — the key words being “Macaulay” and “merit”.

This is because back then in Victorian Lagos, the mainly Anglican Saro stock of the Macaulays, Sierra Leone returnees, who had their bastion at Olowogbowo; and the denizens of Popo Aguda, the mainly Catholic repatriates from Brazil, in the neighbourhood of Campos and Lafiaji, had a running battle with the aborigines of Isale Eko.

Indeed, literatures back then dismissed the Saro, notorious for copying British attitudes, as “parasites”. The Eko aborigines accused them of double parasitism: parasites on the British, for culture (names, speech, dress mode and attitude); and parasites on the natives, for trade. And in that anti-Saro trade resentment, you could feel the Eko natives’ economic xenophobia.

Indeed, Holy Johnson, the inimitable Bishop James Johnson, a prominent Lagos Saro, was caught between the crossfire of his Ijebu nativity and his Saro evolution.

Echeruo quoted the no-nonsense clergy as testifying to the “stubborn dislike of my country men (the Jebus) to the Gospel and to English customs, particularly to long trousers, shoes and socks; and to umbrellas, which last I suppose only Royalty carried.”

So, as the present-day Lagos Olumegbons, Oluwas and Bajulaiyes, Macaulays, Johnsons and Leighs, Damacios, Da-silvas and Perreiras rally in xenophobia, in an apparent economic resentment of non-natives, let it be known that they had not always been a happy and merry phalanx.

If however, the Macaulays and Da-silvas have morphed from resented “parasites” of yore to earn the great Herbert Macaulay the platform of the Association of Lagos State Indigenes (ALSI) Memorial Lecture and Merit Award, it is because of the sheer quality they had, over the years, brought to the table. That is the spirit of Lagos.

Perhaps, at this stage, Ripples’ Lagos bona fides are imperative. Born at Lagos Island Maternity, bred in the Lafiaji area of Lagos Island where he attended St. David’s Anglican School, by parents of Mojoda stock in Eredo, Epe, he is as Lagosian as anyone can be.

So, this is no “atohunrinwa” (Yoruba for settler) voice, trying to claim Eko scalp as economic trophy. It is rather a voice for merit and excellence: for merit has built Lagos; and if it hopes to excel as a megacity or even meta-city, merit must continue to be its cornerstone.

Still, some caveat. The claim that Lagos is a “no man’s land” is as patently idiotic as the claim that Mungo Park discovered River Niger. No matter how many settlers economic opportunities have drawn to Lagos, Lagos remains the jewel of native Lagosians.

And those who, in the context of the United States, mistake Nigerian citizenship for ownership of Lagos, simply because they are long-time residents, wilfully miss the point. Whereas the United States is basically a settler country, Nigeria is basically a country of native communities.

So inasmuch as Nigerian citizenship is to be treasured with all its rights and privileges, citizens have the responsibility to respect native rights, if equity and justice are the issue.

No less misguided are Lagos natives who harp so much on Lagos’s insularity — with their “gedegbe L’Eko wa” mentality. Lagos is linguistically Yoruba, and cannot, in all good conscience and sound logic, be insulated from the Yoruba South West. That is the whole essence of South West integration which The Nation continues to champion but to which, some short-sighted Lagos elite continue to show discomfort.

In Lagos — and indeed, other parts of the country — therefore, respect for native rights must be the starting point. Still, native rights do not translate to wilful denial of contributions of the so-called settlers.

Take the case of Lagos Television (LTV), which at its earliest stages, pioneered 24-hour TV, through its Lagos Weekend Television (LWTV). The brain behind that innovation would appear Taiwo Alimi, a journalism elder and Ogun native, who Governor Lateef Jakande poached from NTA. But when the LTV brand found its feet, some Lagos elements suddenly discovered Alimi was not from Lagos!

Contrast LTV to the defunct Eko Today, formerly Lagos Horizon, Lagos government-owned newspaper. The foundational editors, all ex-Daily Times, led by the late Tunde Odesanya, saw the paper through its teething stages. But when a native with a sense of entitlement took over, the newspaper went under.

The impact of Rauf Aregbesola, now governor of the State of Osun, on Lagos infrastructural renewal of the Bola Tinubu years, is still there for all to see. He was no native. Yet, as Works and Infrastructure commissioner, he left indelible marks. Contrast him to Adeseye Ogunlewe and now Musiliu Obanikoro, natives who returned as federal ministers, to wage virtual partisan wars on their Lagos!

Fortunately, Governor Fashola has, by his stellar performance, shown native Lagosians can boast the highest quality. So, this is not about demonising Lagosians and lionising non-Lagosians.

It is rather about the inherent danger of xenophobia: for behind that patriotic fear hides blatant mediocrity, powered by a sick sense of entitlement and the resultant irresponsibility. That is a one-way road to decline that Lagos would take at its peril.

So, let native Lagosians, as of right, take the best of opportunities of their land. But they must be the best men and women for the job. That is the Babatunde Fashola model.

The narrow road to this destination is conscious and deliberate determination to train Lagosians to be the very best. Xenophobia, on the other hand, is primordial cry for lowering standards for those who cannot compete.

What Lagos needs is merit to trump the rest, not xenophobia to block their way. That is the spirit of Lagos.

Fayemi, Aregebesola win APC gurber tickets

Governors Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State and Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State are on course for a fresh mandate.

The two of them were yesterday picked unopposed at the APC congresses in their states to fly the party’s flag in the governorship elections scheduled for June 21 in Ekiti and August 9 in Osun.

The Ekiti congress which took place at the Trade Fair Complex, Ado-Ekiti, capital of the state, was attended by the Governor , his deputy, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, wife of the state governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi; Speaker of the State Assembly, Dr. Adewale Omirin; the Interim State Chairman of the APC, Chief Jide Awe and the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Yemi Adaramodu.

It was conducted by a team of National officers of APC led by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Senator Osita Izunaso

Other members of the team were Alhaji Abubakar Suleja (Secretary), Isah Maduto, Capt Bala Jubril (rtd), Alhaji Yemi Sanusi, and Steve Asimoke.

Also in attendance were the representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission and men of the Nigeria Police and the State Security Service.

Senator Izunaso, before presenting the certificate of return said that only Governor Fayemi obtained the nomination form at the headquarters of the party in Abuja.

He said that the party held the primaries “based on the enormous respect the party has for the constitution and internal democracy within it” and urged the people of the State to cast their votes for Fayemi.

According to him, Fayemi emerged candidate after polling 192,767 votes of delegates across the 16 councils and 177 wards in the state.

He described the APC as not just a party but “a movement that will change our country from poverty to affluence, from corruption to cleanliness and liberate the people from the misrule of the Peoples Democratic Party”.

In his acceptance comments, Fayemi described APC as a democratic party founded on the credo of internal democracy.

According to him, his emergence as the flag bearer of the APC showed him as having the supports of the party members and the people of the state.

He added: “If what we got today is what we get on the day of election, then the victory is sealed and delivered. But we have to do more than that. We have to go out and propagate the APC to Nigerians as the best party for our people.

In the Osun State primary, Gov Aregbesola got the backing of 269, 631 out of the 355,729 eligible party members to seek reelection.

The congress was conducted by party officials led by former minister of the FCT, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai.

He described the nomination of Gov. Aregbesola as a testimony to his yeoman performances in the last three and a half years.

He said Nigerian and African leaders should borrow a leaf from the governor’s people’s oriented leadership trait.

Speaking on Aregbesola’s legacies, the former Minister said; “By the special grace of God after APC form the government at the federal level by 2015, we are going to adopt O-Meal, OYES and Opon-Imo across the nation to give better living condition to Nigerians as Aregbesola has done for the people of Osun.”

Aregbesola, in his acceptance speech, thanked party members for their support and pledged that his second term would be the beginning of a new era for the state and the people.

Responding to a statement credited to the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ahmadu Mua’zu, that ‘it is difficult but not impossible to unseat Aregbesola in Osun’, the governor said; “it is difficult and impossible to unseat Aregbesola in Osun.”

Present at the event were the state’s Deputy Governor, Mrs. Grace Titilayo Laoye-Tomori, members of the state’s House of Assembly led by the Speaker, Najeem Salam, APC National Assembly member from Osun, members of APC National Working Committee, APC State Working Committee led by the Interim Chairman of the party in the state, Elder Adebiyi Adelowo, members of the state Executive Council and members of the APC Osun Governorship Primary State Collation Officers led by its Chairman, Professor Siyan Oyeweso.

PDP has done nothing for South West, says Aregbesola

THE ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has not brought any meaningful development to the South West region since the return of democracy, Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, stated yesterday.

He spoke in Iwo, headquarters of the Iwo Local Government where he was endorsed for second term at the weekend by thousands of supporters of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The supporters thronged the playing field of the District Council Elementary School, Araromi, where they waved the broom symbol of the party.

Aregbesola assured that all the remaining roads projects around the town and those linking Iwo to the state capital and the neighbouring Oyo State would be reconstructed.

He said Iwo remains critical to the economic reconstruction of Osun, stating that the indigenes have been known in history as enterprising people.

According to the governor: “The road from Papa boundary to Iwo will be done. We always stand by our promise because we are not like the people who ruled the state for seven and half years without anything to show for it.

“We thank our people for having confidence in us; for displaying the conviction that we hold our promises with tenacity. There is nothing we promised that will not be delivered”.

He added: “At a time in this state, they were the occupants of the three tiers of government: the Federal, State and Local government and they couldn’t do anything positive for the state, they are supposed to hide their heads in shame,” the governor stressed.

“We should all begin to tell ourselves that it is only the APC that can deliver good governance in the country. We should not leave the campaign to politicians alone”.

Former Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Bola Asafa, who is the Ekerin of Iwo land, noted that though Osun is poor in terms of financial resources, the degree of performance noticed so far has ranked Aregbesola among some of the best managers of resources in Nigeria.

The Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Mushood Adeoti, urged the people of Iwo and entire state to continue to support the government and the party.

He stressed that it is only the APC that can move the state and the country forward in the right direction.

The SSG said: “Look at our roads, look at the new schools he is building, a lot of our jobless youths are now gainfully employed as a result of the OYES scheme put in place by our governor.

“This government is feeding our elementary school pupils every day. The PDP cannot do it, don’t be deceived by their lies”.

He moved a motion for the adoption of the governor for a second term, which was immediately seconded by Alhaji Liadi Ganiyu, another leader of the party in the local government area to a loud applause from the teeming supporters of the party.

  • Present your blueprint, Osun commissioner tells PDP

Present your blueprint, Osun commissioner tells PDP

Osun State Commissioner for Special Duties and Regional Integration Ajibola Bashiru has challenged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to come out with its blueprint for the state. Speaking to The Nation yesterday in Lagos, he said Osun State people will not be dragged aback by the “visionless” PDP, “which did not impact positively on the people when it ruled the state”. Bashiru said: “The opposition should present its plan, if it has any better plan than what we are implementing. It is not enough to tell lies about what was done and not done. If it has genuine plans, let it present it that, instead of merely saying it wants to run a government of integrity.”

He said for the PDP to come up with Senator Iyiola Omisore as its flag bearer in the August 9 governorship election shows that “it is not serious and is trying to take the state off track”.

Bashiru said Omisore’s campaign that he wants to embark on a rescue mission was a misuse of words, adding: “It is absurd for somebody who was part of an administration that ran the state aground for seven-and-a-half years to say he is embarking on a rescue mission, unless we do not know the meaning of ‘rescue mission’.

“The only way he can talk of rescue mission is to reverse to the conditions of unemployment, poverty, insecurity and bad governance that characterised the past PDP administration.”

Bashiru said since Governor Rauf Aregbesola assumed office, peace has returned to the state.

He said: “A thousand of our supporters were detained. Some ran out of their communities when the PDP was in power. Today, there is an atmosphere of peace and tolerance in the state. We urge our people to be wary of the people of yester-years, who depleted our state. We now have good governance and cannot allow ourselves to be taken back to the bad old days.”

Describing Omisore’s emergence as the PDP’s candidate as “unfortunate”, Bashiru said: “He could not even influence the tarring of the road leading to his house, not to talk of his senatorial district.”

He said Osun people deserve the best and would not be dragged back to the “dark days when the PDP was in charge, even though the administration was illegally constituted”.

Kalu backs Aregbesola for second term

Former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, yesterday declared that Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, deserves a second term in office.

He spoke while participating in the “Walk to Live” health programme at Ipetumodu, the headquarters of the Ife North Local Government.

Orji admitted that Aregbesola’s outstanding performances qualify him for reelection.

After a walk in the midst of massive crowd that followed Aregbesola from Edun-Abon to Ipetumodu, Kalu pointed out that being a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not keep him from saying the truth about the development he has seen in Osun State.

Commercial activities was temporarily brought to a halt as residents joined the governor’s train through major towns of Ife North State Constituency for the 15th edition of the fitness exercise.

As early as 8am, residents and citizens trooped out from towns like Edun-abon, Moro and Yakooyo to join the convoy of the state government led by Aregbesola in company with Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu.

The fitness exercise, a 7- kilometer, walk climaxed at the Origbo Community Unity School in Ipetumodu where members of the various towns joined officials of government and invitees to exercise and listen to address of the governor and well-wishers at the programme.

Kalu praised Aregbesola for lifting Osun.

According to him: “I am still a member of the Peoples Democratic Party but with what I have heard and seen about your governor made me to come out in the open to support good work.

“Iyiola Omisore is a personal friend of mine but I will always say the truth.

“Few days that I have spent here and the way his people talked about him truly showed that Governor Aregbesola deserves another term to complete that good work that the Lord has used him to start during his first term”.

He charged Osun residents to discountenance insinuation that Aregbesola wants to Islamise Osun, saying politicians are only at work to use Aregbesola’s strong Islamic faith to mislead people.

Nigeria can’t survive another period of PDP’s misrule, says Aregbesola

•APC fixes Osun primary for April 12

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola said yesterday that Nigeria may not survive another period of misrule by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He urged Nigerians to work towards replacing the ruling party at the centre.

Aregbesola spoke at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretariat in Abuja after submitting his nomination form for the August 9 governorship election.

He said: “Politicians, particularly in our type of society, can celebrate any political power, but not just any politician. We are politicians with passion for the people and zeal for change. It is the combination of those two things that informed commitment to give Nigeria a rebirth. Going through the years of the PDP’s bad management of our nation, it is the duty of patriots to work assiduously for their replacement. I do not think our nation can survive another period of misrule by the PDP.”

Telling the APC National Deputy Chairman, Aminu Masari; National Organising Secretary Senator Osita Ozinaso and others the achievements of his administration, Aregbesola that he wants a second term in office to complete the work he has started.

He said: “To continue the good work we started in November, 2010, we decided to seek re-election. We have obtained the nomination form and I am joyfully here to seek the nomination of the party to again run for the governorship position in Osun.”

Aregbesola said his administration has almost completed 10-kilometre roads in each local government and is “processing 1,000 kilometres of roads that are 70 per cent completed”.

He said his administration met a destroyed healthcare sector and is rehabilitating nine hospitals.

The governor said he set up a social security scheme for the elderly, which gives stipends to the aged monthly; created jobs for youths and serve nutritious free meals to about 300,000 pupils daily.

He said: “Due to good governance, we have removed fear from the state. I ask the inept PDP that was there for 90 months to tell us what it did for the people. The only thing that is left is the memory of mis-governance.”

Masari said APC is the panacea to Nigeria’s problems, adding: “With the type of governors we have, we have demonstrated good leadership.”

The former House of Representatives Speaker, who said he just rose from a meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said the commission’s Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, assured parties that the 2015 election would be free and fair.

He expressed optimism that the APC would win the presidential and other elections.

Ozinaso said: “Ward congresses in Osun will hold on March 29. The local government congresses will hold on April 1 and the state congress April 5. The primary will hold on April 12.”

He said the party would be fair to all aspirants at the primary.

Fayemi, Aregbesola deserve second term, say office holders

All Progressives Congress (APC) Political Office Holders from the Diaspora, Southwest chapter, have adopted Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi and his Osun State counterpart, Rauf Aregbesola, for second terms.

Rising from a meeting in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, the group said Fayemi and Aregbesola should be allowed to continue beyond one term because of their sterling performances.

Members unanimously agreed that they have both delivered brilliantly on their campaign promises and deserved to be re-elected.

The group said the interventionist programmes of both governors in all sectors have brought relief and hope to their people.

It said their creative and visionary leadership had revitalised education and health care delivery and improved security.

The group praised the governors’ programmes in youth empowerment, sport, environment, food production and rehabilitation and construction of roads.

It said it carefully studied the “progressive achievements” of Fayemi and Aregbesola before rallying support for them.

Mr. Olufemi Adefolaju (Ekiti State) and Adeyemi Taiwo (Osun State) moved the motion for the adoption of the governors for second terms. The motion was seconded by Segun Erinle (Ekiti State) and Jerry Adetona (Osun State).

Also at the meeting, which was presided over by a member of the Osun State House Assembly, Hon. Femi Fafiyebi, were Chief John Filani and Mr. Muyiwa Olarewaju.

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola will receive the National Infinity magazine’s Man of the Year 2013 award next month.

He will be presented with the award during the Third Babatunde Jose Lecture on Media and The Society.

The presentation will be preceded by a lecture to be delivered by eminent journalism scholar, former Executive Editor of The News and Managing Editor of Premium Times.com, Dr. Dapo Olorunyomi, at the Centre for Black Culture and International Understanding in Osogbo, the state capital.

Osun, foreign firm to build N5b mechanic villages

•Artisans, councils’ board, Ondo indigenes back Aregbesola

Five state-of-the-art mechanic villages worth five billion naira are to be built in Osun State.

They will be built by the state government in collaboration with a company from the Netherlands and the National Automobile Council.

They are part of the 11 auto cities to be built in the country.

Governor Rauf Aregbesola announced this at the weekend in Osogbo, the state capital, at a programme organised by the National Automobile and Technician Association (NATA) of Nigeria, Osogbo and Olorunda chapters, to declare their support for the governor’s second term bid.

The mechanic villages would begin operation this year. They will be located in Osogbo, Ile-Ife, Ikirun, Ilesa and Iwo.

Aregbesola said: “A mechatronic village will soon be built on the premises of the Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke, for the training of NATA members on modern ways of automobile repair.

“The mechatronic villages will cost the state government N1 billion. They would be manned by a team of 30 engineers, who are undergoing training on modern day automobile repair in Germany.”

The governor described NATA as vital to the growth of the state’s economy and thanked its members for their support.

Chairman of the occasion and chairman, Oranmiyan Worldwide, Prince Felix Awofisayo assured NATA of the government’s continued support.

NATA Vice-President, Southwest, Comrade Dele Odewale said: “Aregbesola is a God-sent governor; that is why he is getting things right. Automobile mechanics support his second term ambition in recognition of his brilliant performance.

“Technicians have benefited immensely from the present administration’s efforts to put smiles on the people’s faces in every facet of life. The administration has impacted on our lives and profession positively.”

Also at the weekend, the board of Local Government Education Authorities endorsed Aregbesola for a second term.

They said the governor’s achievements in education, infrastructure, youth employment, health, security and environment are unprecedented.

The board members and people from their councils assembled at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, where they declared their support for the governor’s re-election bid.

The board’ Chairman, Isa Ojewale, said: “The Aregbesola administration has simplified governance by involving the people in it. The state has been relatively peaceful since the inception of the administration, an achievement that was made possible through the Osun Youth Employment Scheme (OYES) and other programmes that engage youths”.

Aregbesola said his administration would continue to meet the people’s needs.

Members of the Market Women Association, led by Alhaja Awawu Assindemade, top government officials and state executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were at the event.

Also at the weekend, a group of Ondo State indigenes resident in Osun State, Aregbesola Sunshine Movement (ASM), pledged to work for the governor’s re-election.

At the group’s meeting in Akure, the Coordinator and Ondo All Progressives Congress (APC) Chieftain, Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, said ASM was formed to work towards Aregbesola’s re-election.

Yusuf-Ogunleye said the group was impressed by Aregbesola’s performance, particularly on regional integration.

He said Aregbesola spent his youthful days in Ondo State and deserves to be supported by Ondo indigenes in Osun.

Yusuf-Ogunleye said the group would launch its campaign soon at the APC secretariat in Osogbo.
