    Leadership means responsibility, says Aregbesola

    •Adeleke to electorate: vote wisely

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said leadership comes with responsibility.

He spoke yesterday at St. John’s Primary School in Ikire, Isokan-Ayedaade-Irewole Federal Constituency, during his re-election campaign.

Aregbesola told the people to expect more than he did in his first term if given their mandate for a second term.

He listed projects executed by his administration in the constituency as the sinking of 88 boreholes; distribution of 2,299 Opon Imo (tablet of knowledge) to secondary schools; beatification of Asejire to Gbogan on the Ibadan-Ife expressway; building of five model schools; and construction of 60km roads, among others.

Aregbesola said: “We believe power is responsibility, but the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) believes that power has no responsibility. That is the difference between the two of us. Our party rules with the aim of running a government that is beneficial to the people. We have the people’s welfare at heart, but the PDP is selfish, greedy and avaricious. Therefore we do not resemble them. PDP was here for close to eight years; did it think ambulances were needed on our roads?”

The first civilian governor of Osun State, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, urged the people to re-elect Aregbesola so that he can “continue transforming” the state.

He said Aregbesola’s “excellent performance” in the last three-and-a-half years qualify him for a second term.

Adeleke, who dumped PDP for APC last Saturday, said the PDP’s candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore, lacked the capacity to lead the state because “he is bereft of ideas”.

He said: “I urge you to use your votes to bring back Aregbesola because he has worked tremendously for the state’s development. You should make sure we get 80 per cent of the votes. If we are able to do this, we will be killing an ant with a sledge hammer. Now that Omisore has made Adejare Bello his deputy, I will make sure he does not win his ward in Ede North.”

When the campaign train visited the Akire of Ikire, Oba Olatunde Falabi, in his palace, the monarch said the people do not need a soothsayer to tell them that the APC administration has brought huge development to the state.

He said: “We can see the development with our eyes. We can see the transformation of the state all around us. In fact, you have been doing the job as if your life depends on it. With this achievement, your second term is guaranteed.”

Many leaders in the constituency, including Hon. Ayo Omidiran, hailed the performance of the Aregbesola administration.

On the campaign train were the governor’s wife, Sherifat; his deputy, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori; Secretary to the State Government Moshood Adeoti; the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Gboyega Oyetola; APC Interim Chairman Elder Adebiyi Adelowo and the Secretary, Prince Gboyega Famodun.

Day Ile-Ife stood still for Aregbesola

Ile-Ife, the cradle of the Yoruba was the centre of activities last Tuesday when Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola flagged off his re-election campaign, ADESOJI ADENIYI
    was there.

    •Governor flags off campaign

Tuesday last week was a day to remember in Ile-Ife, Osun State. It was the day the campaign train of the governor of the state, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola took off on a journey round the state to garner support for his second term bid.

Even though everything was set for the mega rally that heralded the beginning of his campaign for the August 9, gubernatorial election, the large turnout of his supporters mainly from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other well-wishers at the homestead of his main challenger from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyiola Omisore left no one in doubt about the immense popularity of the governor.

Many people, particularly the politicians and other residents of the state, have been looking forward to the commencement of political campaigns by candidates of the political parties. After scaling through the first hurdle of becoming the standard bearer of his party, the All Progressives Congress, through his endorsement for second term by various groups in and outside the party and the state, what was left for Aregbesola before flagging off his campaign was a signal from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lifting the ban on campaigns and which was done two weeks ago. And Ile-Ife, the cradle of the Yoruba was the place for him to flag-off his campaign.

For many people it was political and more important for Areg-besola to test his popularity in a town where the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hails from and where he claims to be his stronghold. But Aregbesola in his campaign address said it was erroneous to think so.

And as some of his aides including Sunday Akere and Ajibola Basiru, told whoever cared to listen, Aregbesola explained that it was tradition with his party to start it’s campaign from Ile-Ife, which they regard as the source of the Yoruba race out of respect for the ancient town, its monarch and peoples.

First, Aregbesola and his campaign train including his wife, Sherifat, and deputy, Otunba Grace Titi Laoye-Tomori and other principal officers of his government paid homage to Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse II where he received a royal blessing and permission to flag off the campaign for 2014 governorship poll.

There was sea of heads, mostly APC supporters in and outside Ile-Ife at the Government Technical College, venue of the event, waiting in solidarity to welcome Aregbesola to the ancient town. Many of them, who came in groups, had waited patiently for many hours before the governor and his campaign train eventually arrived around 5.00 pm. The crowd was so huge that the governor’s convoy found it difficult to move into the enclosure where Aregbesola was to climb a podium and address the people. The security, comprising the police, men of the Department of State Security, the Nigeria Security and Defense Corps and the Federal Road Safety Corps, had a hectic time controlling the crowd and vehicular movement. The Fuji maestro, King Wasiu Marshal, and many other musicians, including Tony Tetuila were on hand to sing on the occasion.

Mounting the podium to address the crowd, the elated Aregbesola said his reason for seeking a second term was to consolidate good governance. At intervals, he was churning out a number of folk songs, miming juju and Fuji music to drive home his point to the admiration of his supporters, who responded with great cheers. The governor reeled out a long list of achievements that cut across the state and sectors.

His party, the APC, as expected, was always ready to lend its voice on issues as they affect the governor. Reacting to the flag off, the party said that if there was any doubt in the minds of skeptics and opponents alike that Aregbesola’s popularity is unassailable by any politician in the race for August 9 gubernatorial election, the Tuesday campaign flag off, a show of support by the people of Ife zone was the start of the storm that should clear those doubts.

According to the APC, only a person who has impacted the lives of the people positively can get the kind of reception given to the governor as he kicked-off his campaign in the home of his PDP opponent. The party’s spokesperson Barrister Kunle Oyatomi, said: “The crowd was representative of popular support, the festive atmosphere was indicative of spontaneous joy of a people who were appreciative of what Governor Aregbesola has done for them which had never been done by any other governor since Osun State was created 23 years ago. The storm has just started; it will build into a hurricane as the campaigns progress and when the votes are over by August 9, the PDP will be crushed.”

Two days before the flag off, the Ife Zone of Aregbesola State Campaign Committee appealed to the PDP and its governorship candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore, to embrace peace. At a press conference in Ile-Ife, the chairman, Hon. Folorunso Bamisayemi, said if truly the reason for seeking the mandate to rule is for development there should not be any justification for planning bloodletting and plan for unleashing violence on the people. He said the All Progressives Congress had no history of violence and assured that the party was prepared to show case numerous achievements of the governor in all sectors.

He maintained that the governor had done so much for people of the state and the Ife zone in particular, adding: “In Ife municipal, Aregbesola’s administration constructed 15 roads which are about 30 kilometres long. For Ife South, he constructed 12 roads; nine for Ifetedo and three for Garage Olode. He constructed 14 roads for Ife North which consists of Ipetumodu, Yakoyo, Edun-Abon and others. Also, he built world class schools for the people of this zone. He improved our environment significantly. Through Agba Osun, he provided a social security for the elderly which no government before him ever did. The PDP for its seven and a half years had nothing to show for being in power. The party left public schools in shambles.” He maintained that rather than engage in violence the APC would base its campaign on issues and achievements of Aregbesola which no government has ever matched.

According to Bamisayemi, the information reaching the APC in Ife zone was that the PDP and Omisore were planning to abort the flag off of the APC. He said they had it on good authority that Omisore want to unleash terror on the chieftains of the APC in Ife, starting from Monday night through Tuesday morning. But Omisore through his Campign Director of Media, Prince Diran Odeyemi, said “the series of unfounded allegation against him and the PDP are mere noise from APC that has nothing tangible to base its campaign on.  ”Omisore yesterday, Omisore today, Omisore tomorrow, why? Do all these not negate APC’s earlier promise to go and sleep should Omisore become PDP candidate? All these noise and unsubstantiated allegations are signs of a drowning party looking for what to clinch on for survival. This is the time to talk about programs and manifesto and not about Omisore did this, he did that. If there are evidences of plan to cause mayhem anywhere in the state, they should inform the police and other security agencies rather than running to the press,”

However, the flag off went peacefully. Akere and Basir said the exercise did not witness any act of violence because the APC had revealed the PDP and Omisore’s plot to cause mayhem. Describing the event as momentous the party said it has shown that the take off of APC’s governorship campaign will finally sweep the PDP out of Osun State.

With the Ile-Ife flag off rally, Aregbesola has set the tone for what to expect during the campaigns. And to a lot of people, the size of the crowd at the campaign rallies will go a long way to determine the popularity of the candidates.

Adeleke defects to APC in colourful ceremony

First civilian governor of Osun State and former Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) in the Senate, Isiaka Adeleke, yesterday defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) with thousands of his supporters.

Adeleke, a former chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was received with his supporters by the APC leaders, including the party’s national chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, as well as Governors Rauf Aregbesola (Osun) and Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti).

The colourful ceremony was held at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park.

Addressing the huge crowd, Akande congratulated Aregbesola for Adeleke and his supporters’ decision to come into the APC.

He noted that Adeleke’s father was a renowned progressive politician with immense contributions, adding that he was glad to join other APC leaders to receive the former governor into the party.

Among the defectors that followed Adeleke into the APC were Mufutau Ayinde, Kamoru Adegoke, Kamoru Ajisafe, Bashir Salam and others.

All of them said they resolved to leave the PDP because of the violent nature of many of its chieftains and join the APC because of its progressive nature.

They also cited the performances of Governor Aregbesola as another decider for them.

Adeleke and his supporters were formally received and given the APC flags in place of that of the PDP, which was burnt.

The former governor narrated how he was violently attacked by the PDP governorship candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore; Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Jelili Adesiyan, and others at a public function.

Adeleke, who said he did not have any problem with the PDP, maintained he left the party because he found it difficult to work with the criminals whom he said dominated the PDP in Osun State.

He said: “I can never work with criminal and violent people. My advice for the people of Osun State is that they should not vote for the criminals. They cannot do better than Aregbesola.”

Acknowledging Aregbesola’s performance, he assured him of his support for the second term.

Aregbesola berated the PDP for misrule, saying the people of Ede are progressive and cannot work with “those who have got nothing to offer them.”

He recalled the late sage Obafemi Awolowo’s prophecy that “the good people would be separated from the bad” and noted that Adeleke’s defection has made the prophecy very relevant.

Some of those in attendance at the event included the interim national legal adviser, Dr. Muiz Banire; the APC acting chairman in Osun State, Elder Adebiyi Adelowo; the governor’s wife, Sherifat; members of the National Assembly and the state House of Assembly and others.

•Ife stands still as governor kicks off campaign

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola was received by a crowd in Ile-Ife yesterday as he kicked-off his second term campaign.

The Ile-Ife Technical College, venue of the campaign, was filled to capacity.

For close to six hours, Ile-Ife, home town of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore, stood still for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.

Aregbesola’s first port of call was the Enuwa palace of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade.

Oba Sijuwade said election is not a do-or-die affair, but a civil exercise for the people to choose their leader(s).

He said he met with politicians in the town and warned them against violence, adding: “As a royal father for all, I can only tell politicians to conduct themselves in an accepted manner and play according to the electoral rules. Election is a routine through which people elect those they want to rule them. Therefore, election is not synonymous to bloodshed. This is why I cautioned politicians to eschew violence before, during and after the election.”

The monarch hailed Aregbesola for his achievements in all sectors.

At the campaign ground, the governor urged the crowd to observe a minute silence to pray for the rescue of the kidnapped Chibok school girls.

He reminded the crowd that his first term election campaign in March, 2007, also began in Ile-Ife on a Tuesday, which the Yoruba believe is a day of victory.

Aregbesola said he seeks re-election to perfect the establishment of credible leadership in Osun.

He said though electoral fraudsters stole his mandate in 2007, the shenanigans of 2007 would not happen again in the history of Osun politics.

Aregbesola remembered 12 people who were killed “in their bid to prevent rigging” in their domain.

Listing his administration’s achievements in Ife Federal Constituency, he said: “We have touched lives in all facets of human endeavour. We have constructed over 50.63km of intra-city roads, built six schools and several boreholes, distributed 1,473 pieces of Opon Imo (Tablet of Knowledge) to high school pupils.

“This is in addition to ensuring adequate security by providing equipment to security agencies, providing health care facilities and giving monthly stipends to vulnerable elders under the Agba Osun Scheme. All these we have done and are doing. We want a second term to consolidate on all these achievements as well as lay a solid foundation for credible governance.”

Aregbesola sang various Juju and Fuji songs to drive home his points. He also sang a Christian song, which says “sweep away evil”.

He thanked Ife people for their support and pledged to always protect their interests.

Senators Jide Omoworare (Osun East) and Sola Adeyeye (Osun Central) said Omisore has no mental capacity to serve Osun.

They said the job of administering a state is enormous, adding that Omisore is unprepared and lacks the know-how to do so.

The lawmakers said: “The August 9 election is a referendum to elect Aregbesola for a second term. He is God sent to the people of Osun. In a single term of four years, this wonderful man transformed the state positively.

“The truth of the matter is that Omisore has no mental capacity to govern this developing state. As a senator, Omisore cannot point to anything beneficial he has done for Ile-Ife, not to talk of Osun. What has he brought to his town and state from his much-touted mainstream politics?” Omoworare and Adeyeye urged the people to vote wisely and re-elect Aregbesola.

At the event were the governor’s wife, Serifat; his deputy, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori; and APC chieftains.

There was a heavy presence of security agents at the rally.

    The event was peaceful.

Osun’ll issue smart cards for school meals, says Aregbesola

    •Feeding to gulp N3b yearly

The Osun State government will soon issue smart cards to pupils for its school feeding programme.

Governor Rauf Aregbesola spoke in Abuja at an event sponsored by the Federal Government and the Partnership for Child Development (PCD) to promote home grown school meals for Nigerian pupils, tagged: “Investing in school feeding in Nigeria: Opportunities for advancing home grown school feeding programmes for the benefit of school children and farmers in Nigeria.”

The programme has only been implemented by Kano and Osun states.

Aregbesola said though the programme had been devoid of manipulation since it was repackaged in 2010, there was need to digitalise it.

He said: “We are advancing to a point where nobody would manipulate the process. By the end of this month, we will issue our pupils, particularly those at the elementary level, electronic smart cards with which they will register for meals consumed on the Point of Sale (PoS) terminal. Once they do so, the caterers will take their PoS to the bank where the number of pupils fed will be analysed. We are digitising the process in a way that there can’t be manipulation. This means it is one programme that is worthy of every naira and kobo invested in it.”

Aregbesola said the programme gulps N12.7 million on every school day.

He said N601,400 is paid to 3,007 caterers daily as transport fare, adding: “Today, with Osun’s elementary school enrolment figure of almost

253,000, the implication is that of increasing our annual expenditure on O’MEALS to about N3 billion. This does not include staff salary.”

The governor said the cost of the meals is shared by the state government and local governments on a 40/60 per cent ratio.

He said the programme has helped his administration to achieve many of its objectives, such as the increased enrolment of pupils in elementary schools.

Aregbesola said: “The programme is consistent with our government’s goals of banishing poverty and hunger, creating work and wealth, creating functional education, restoring healthy living and engendering communal peace and progress.”

PCD Executive Director Dr. Les Idris urged all tiers of government to collaborate and ensure the success of the project.

She said PCP will support any state that shows interest in the programme.

Osun sets up Peace Resolution Commission

THE Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has inaugurated the Peace Resolution Commission of Inquiry for the state.

Noting that maintenance of peace and orderliness are the twin objectives of his administration; the governor added that the new commission will examine cases of abuses and breach of the peace in the state.

Quoting from Section 2, subsection 1 of Cap 29 of the state law which empowered the establishment of the Commission, Aregbesola said the protection of life and property is a constitutional provision and responsibility of every government.

Aregbesola said, “It was clear to me on assumption of office that maintenance of law and order will remain the bulwark and cornerstone of my administration.

“I also communicated this to my party members through series of warnings that anyone who runs contrary to the laws of the land would be met with adequate punishment. It is this maintenance of law and order that has brought absolute peace we are enjoying in the state today.

“The former Inspector-General of Police and Chairman, Police Service Commission, Mr. Mike Okiro attested to the fact that Osun State is the most peaceful state in Nigeria when he visited us a few months ago.

“By submitting to the rule of law as citizens, the responsibility behoves on the government to guaranty rights to life, employment, residency and freedom of religion and the likes.

“We have taken proactive measures in the past to ensure this and we are more conscious now as we approach election months.

“Whatever we are doing here today is in the interests of law, security and order and government has no reason being in place without maintenance of law and order.”

The governor listed the scope of the Commission to include amongst others the power to receive petitions and investigate; determination of extent of injuries, punishment and compensation, recommendations, stoppage of further occurrence and identification of groups or individuals.”

In his response, the Chairman of the Commission, Justice Abdukarim Adeigbe, promised to do justice to all manner of persons and ensure that justice is not merely served, but seen to have been served satisfactorily.

    APC chieftains back Aregbesola

All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders in Irepodun Local Government Area of Osun State have pledged to work for Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s victory in the August 9 election.

Chairman of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Otun Jagun of Ilobu Chief Dauda Ademola Alabi spoke at a meeting of APC members.

He said APC leaders in the council were mobilising support for Aregbesola.

Alabi hailed the party chairman in the council, Mr. Abayomi Oyedeji, for his doggedness amid intimidation by various interest groups.

He said the Oyedeji-led executive council’s efforts resulted in the mass defection of people from opposition parties to the APC.

Alabi lauded the governor’s reforms, saying the reorientation, infrastructural upgrade, school reforms and peaceful atmosphere, have attracted many coverts to the party.

Nigeria must take advantage of its diversity, says Aregbesola

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said Nigeria needs to use its diversity to its advantage as many great nations have done.

He spoke at the weekend at a dinner organised by the state government for members of the Course 36, Batch 5 of the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Jos, who are on a tour of the country.

Aregbesola said the country had not seized the opportunity of its diversity to build a strong and virile nation, adding: “We have not used our diversity to the best advantage. Our diversity should be a major advantage for us because most great nations of the world converted their diversity to strength and greatness.

“Our diversity too should form the basis for our growth, strength and development, rather than retard our progress.”

He hailed the vision of the founders of NIPSS and acknowledged the guiding philosophy of the institute.

Speaking for the participants, Air Commodore Ademola Onitiju hailed the governor for his focused leadership and the transformation of the state.

He said Aregbesola’s leadership style should be emulated by other states, adding that the administrations’ youth empowerment programmes were some of the best in the country.

Air Commodore Onitiju said: “In our tour of Osun, we found focused leadership. The state anthem is more than a promotion of the Omoluabi concept. The introduction of a unique selection of the leadership of the civil service is a thing that should be copied by other state.

“We also noted the governor’s aggressive effort in opening up Osun through road networks. What amuses us most was that when we followed the governor to the inauguration of roads in Osogbo, people came out in their thousands to appreciate the governor; that showed that he is loved by his people.

“We also found out about the administration’s bold effort on the airport project and the improvement and beatification of the Railway Station in Osogbo.

“The school feeding programme, which has attracted more children to enroll in schools, has positively impacted on the educational development of the state with high nutritional value for the building of young minds into robust adulthood.

“The state’s school re-classification policy, which is in tandem with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO’s) educational standard – though criticised by those who didn’t take time to study the policy, is a model for educational development.

“We only hope that Aregbesola stays focused and committed to the actualisation of his policies and programmes for the good people of Osun.”
