    Osun APC gets campaign committee

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has inaugurated a committee for Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s re-election campaign.

The ceremony was held at the party’s secretariat in Osogbo, the state capital.

The party’s Chairman, Elder Adebiyi Adelowo, urged members to ensure Aregbesola’s victory in the August 9 poll.

He urged them to be mindful of the opposition’s violent nature, adding: “The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has nothing progressive to offer the people, except violence, rigging and destruction. It is counting on violence before and during the poll as a means of winning the election; PDP believes in manipulation and rigging.

“As committee members, you should use constructive and peaceful methods to neutralise the PDP’s campaign of terror and educate the people on the critical issue involved in the election, which is whether Osun wants to progress or allow terrorists to destroy all that our party has achieved in the last four years. So, you have an idea of what the committee’s task is.”

The committee members include political appointees across the nine federal constituencies.

  • Governor seeks allocation review

    Governor seeks allocation review

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said the reduction in federal allocation to states will slow down the eradication of poverty.

He spoke yesterday in Osogbo, the state capital, at a two-day economic summit organised by the Peoples Welfare League.

It was themed: “Crux of Economic Development Master-plan: Analysing Radical Paradigm Shift”.

Aregbesola said unless a radical solution to is propounded, the people will continue to live in poverty.

He said the Federal Government had no justification for reducing the allocation to states by 40 per cent when the price of oil in the international market had not changed and it was still supplying the same quantity to the market.

Aregbesola said: “The price of oil remains the same and money allocated to states has reduced. This is stalling the drive to better the lots of the people. We depend on the allocation for our well being and if things continue this way, the fight against poverty will be an illusion.”

He said despite this, his administration had not faltered in its responsibilities to the people and had put in more efforts to meet its statutory obligations.

Aregbesola said: “We have wasted no time in executing our action plan to generate employment, transform the state, improve human capacity and ensure the well being of the people.”

He said the Osun Youth Employment Scheme (OYES) had engaged many youths, adding: “Over N200 million is injected into Osun’s economy annually through the OYES scheme. Youths have taken advantage of the scheme to reinvent the state.”

The Co-chairman of the event and former Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Hassan Sunmonu, said Nigeria needed to reflect on the harsh economic realities confronting its people.

He said: “I will continue to support any cause that will better the lots of the people and, from what I see in Osun, the dynamic governor is making progress on a steady pace. Osun and Nigeria will benefit from this summit’s reports.”

Another Co-chairman Ambassador Olu Otunla, represented by Prof. Alade Fawole, said the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s economic model remains the best in the country, adding: “His policies on agriculture, rural transformation and industrialisation have not been faulted in any part of the world, rather, those who appreciate the economic model tap into it to better their lots. I have no doubt that that is what Governor Aregbesola is taking advantage of.”

Aregbesola inaugurates civil servant’s smart ID card

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola inaugurated yesterday the smart identity card and biometric automation for civil servants.

The initiative, tagged: “I am Alive”, is the first in the country. The smart card contains the data of civil servants and will serve as credit card, debit card and identification cards.

An interesting feature of the card is that carriers can withdraw up to 20 per cent of their salary without money in their accounts.

The smart card is a tripartite arrangement among the Osun State government, Charms Plc and First Bank Plc.

Aregbesola, in his speech, titled: “Identifying the Living”, said the smart card would intensify the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for administrative efficiency.

He said the card is electronically personalised with the biometric features of its carrier.

The governor said: “It was through the application of ICT to our tax administration and revenue collection that we increase our Internally-Generated Revenue (IGR) by 100 per cent within the first few months of our administration.

“We have since intensified efforts to make ICT an inherent part of our public administrative system. The introduction of this smart electronic identity card is another component of that o effort.

“It will expectedly bring about many benefits to civil servants and the government. It will be given to all workers across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), including Local Government Council workers.

“The Smart ID Card is electronically personalised with the biometric features of each user. It will add immense value to the performance of workers and improve the capacity and cost of administration by the government.”

Aregbesola said the card will eliminate financial waste and leakages and create a reliable database for salary payment.

He said: “Leave bonuses, for example, are now tied to each worker’s birthday and paid to their accounts automatically on that day. With this Smart ID Cards, there cannot be mistaken identity in the payment of money to workers. In this system, identity is completely individualised and electronically personalised.

“For pensioners, it removes the stress of going through multiple verifications to get their money and blocks means of cheating them. By clearly identifying the living from the dead, this system ensures that ghosts will no longer mingle with our workers or have access to our payroll in Osun. It keeps them where they belong – in the grave. It stops the dead from coming to steal money from the living. It makes certain that only retirees who are ‘ALIVE’ receive payment. This affirms the sense in the project’s title, ‘I am Alive’.”

The governor said by June, pupils aged 1-6 years will have personalised cards containing their bio-data.

The Group Managing Director of Charms, Mr. Ademola Aladekomo, said Osun has broken another ground in the ICT world.

He said the smart card can be used anywhere in Nigeria and abroad, adding that it carries the fingerprints of its holder.

The representative of First Bank’s Managing Director, Mr. Mutairu Akinfolarin said the card was a product of “hard thinking”.

He hailed the governor for pioneering the card, adding that First Bank was proud to be part of it.

‘Omisore’ll be defeated in his ward’

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s target in the August 9 governorship election is not only to win, but also to defeat Senator Iyiola Omisore of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in his ward, it was learnt yesterday.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Research, Planning and Policy Implementation (Federal Matters) Prince Olusegun Bada said this in Abuja while speaking to The Nation.
Omisore was, in 2011, defeated by Senator Jide Omoworare of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the senatorial poll.
Bada said the only place Omisore won in the senatorial election was in his ward, adding: “We are not only looking forward to defeating him in the governorship election. That is an understatement. We are also looking forward to beating him in his constituency and ward.”
He said Aregbesola had performed excellently and expressed confidence that the governor would be re-elected.
Bada said: “Even people within the PDP know that their candidate cannot win. You cannot win when you are against the people. Winning an election is based on track record and the records of both candidates are there.
“Aregbesola has tarred 10km roads in each local government area. He has not spent four years in office and has tarred over 600km of roads. And we are targeting 1,000km.
“He has done backward and forward linkage with access to agricultural products. He has created an enabling environment for hospitality, and for small scale and manufacturing businesses to thrive. He has made Osun State peaceful for coexistence among various ethnic and religious groups.”

No economy can grow with bad roads, says Aregbesola

•Governor opens 21 roads in Osogbo

Osogbo, the Osun State capital, went agog yesterday as Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s motorcade went round the city to open 21 roads.
Shouts of “Aregbe” rented the air as the governor’s convoy moved through Station to Ebenezer Hotel Road; Boorepo to Elelede Junction Road; Elelede to Gbemu Road; Gbodofon to Gbemu Junction Road; and Ilobu Road to GRA Road, among others.
At Oroki Estate, the venue of the ceremony, Aregbesola said his administration had spent N10 billion on roads.
He said he was not disturbed by the huge amount because the roads would give unquantifiable benefits to the people.
The governor said at the inception of his administration, it had a vision of progress for Osun, of which road development was a vital component.
He said: “When we started these roads, our traducers scoffed and mocked the project, claiming that we would never have the funds or the presence of mind to see them through. But to the glory of God and their eternal shame, we have delivered on our promise.
“We are not resting on our oars. Our greater vision is to tar every road in the state, since we cannot conceive of a beautiful environment without good roads.
“We will, therefore, continue to convert our visionary road map for Osun into concrete and enduring legacy of asphaltic surfaces for the socio-economic development and prosperity of our people.”
He said the development of Osogbo township roads was part of a visionary road map to make the city a befitting state capital.
The governor said the 26.31km roads will ease traffic.
They include Station Road to Ebenezer Hotel Road; Boorepo to Elelede Junction Road; Elelede to Gbemu Road; Gbodofon to Gbemu Junction Road; and Ilobu Road to GRA Road.
Others are: Oja Oba Road to Plantain Area; Balogun Biiro to Oke Baale Road; Alafia Street to Church Street, Awolowo Way; Coca-Cola to Capital Hotel Road; Oke Onitea Road to Anaye Market Junction; Okefia to Ita Olokan Road; the road opposite Capital Hotel to Oroki Road; Oroki Estate to Ilobu Road; Odetoyinbo to Heritage Hotel Road with Spur; and Kola Balogun Road Junction to Fiwasaye Olohunosebi Junction.
The rest are Osunbukola to Ede Road; John Mackay Road to Oke Baale; the road from Tanisi to Keji Adigun Street; Adams Street to Mercy Land and Road Spur; Steel Rolling Camp to Kabelo Filling Station and Ifeloju Omo-West Road.
At the event were Aregbesola’s wife, Sherifat; his deputy, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori; House of Assembly Speaker Najeem Salam; Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Moshood Adeoti; top government officials; traditional rulers and trade groups, among others.

    Aregbesola, Fashola, NBA, seek action

    Protest in Ilorin

It was meant to be a ceremony for the presentation of a book. But yesterday’s event was not just that: it was an avenue to express feelings on the state of the nation, particularly the April 15 kidnapping of 234 school girls.

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola urged Nigerians to protest the abduction of the girls from their hostel Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State.

In Ilorin, women Muslims marched on the Governor’s Office to demand action on the fate of the girls.

Christians in the Northeast began a three-day fast and prayers for the safe return of the girls.

In Lagos, lawyers urged the Presidency to do its all in finding the girls.

Aregbesola spoke at the presentation of a book “Giant of History (The making of our world)”, authored by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba, at the Civic Centre Lagos.

The governor, who was the keynote speaker, lamented that seven days after the abduction saga, it was frightening that there had been no lead as to the girls’ whereabouts.

“I’m so depressed about what is happening in the country and I do not know how to put it. I cannot understand the rationale behind the kidnapping of school girls. Girls who left their homes with the sole ambition of acquiring knowledge only to end up as companions to criminals. It is frightening,” he said.

In the governor’s view, Nigerians are gradually accepting kidnapping as a normal occurrence. The time has come for all to rise up and kick against the situation, he said, adding:

“I don’t even know what to say than to urge everybody to do anything humanly possible, collectively and individually, to put an end to this sad development. The Federal Government must rise up to this. Everyone in authority must act now. It is not only degrading us as a people, it is defaming us.

“As horrible as Afghanistan is, we never read of human beings abducted. We talk of no man’s land of West Afghanistan; such does not happen. Nigeria is heading to the level that does not recognise us as civilised people and human beings anymore and it is a shame.

“I should not have said this here, considering my position in the polity but what is my choice? When school children are being abducted in schools and we carry on as if it is mere statistics. It is not. We must protest on the streets to tell all of us that enough is enough.”

Aregbesola queried the relevance of titles political office holders’ bear, saying “Your Excellency” is unconstitutional.

“For Public office holders who got their mandate on popular electoral mandate, it is totally paradoxical to refer to them as ‘Your Excellency’. Where? This makes no sense but people just carry on and on. In Republican America, it is abnormal to refer to the president as ‘Your Excellency’. He is called ‘Mr. President’,” he said.

Aregbesola praised the author, saying youths and children will find the book more impactful as they can draw inspiration from the lives of great men who affected their generation in their time.

To Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, the situation in the country raises the question of leadership challenge.

Fashola said the nation was suffering from “leadership vacuum”, stressing the need for Nigeria to harness its wealth of human resources to the places where it needed it most.

He also referred to the television commercial hailing the achievements of the Jonathan administration in terms of security and infrastructure, saying it is almost tantamount to “blasphemy”.

“If those people think everything is all right, then it must be two things; it is perhaps that they are watching the news on black and white television or they are reading the newspapers upside down.

“It is not you who will tell us that you are a great man; it is the people and we as governors who will tell you because we wear the shoes. When the rich and poor are crying out against insecurity,” Fashola said.

Fashola also praised the author for finding time to write the book, urging other public office holders to document their experience in service to fill the dearth of literature on public service.

All Progressive Congress (APC) National Leader Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the book presents leaders who provide inspiration for all.

Tinubu, who was represented at the event by the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, stressed that it was important to record the achievements of these leaders and the role they played in the actualisation of their various objectives.

He said the time has come for Nigeria to identify her local leaders and honor them.

“We should recall the things they have done and record it for future generation. This book identifies leaders that have been recorded in history, but we must begin to recognise our own leaders and draw inspiration from them particularly in the Southwest region,” Tinubu said.

Chairman, MTN Nigeria Pascal Dozie, who was chairman, urged leaders to do their best in the service of the people rather than primitively accumulating wealth.

Dozie said great leaders were not remembered by their acquisitions but by how much impact they made on the lives of their people.

He urged leaders to preoccupy themselves with ideas and strategies that would bring about development in their societies.

Bok reviewer Tade Ipadeola said the publication chronicled how the ideas of some 150 great men shaped the world.

He urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the book and begin to think about development like Albert Einstein, Nelson Mandela and other great men featured in the publication.

Also present were Mr Gbenga Adefaye, immediate past president, Nigerian Guild of Editors and Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye of the University of Lagos.

    Coalition honours governor, business woman

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola and Mrs. Rita Lori-Ogbebor, a business woman and women leader, were honoured yesterday by a pan-Yoruba group, the O’Odua Nationalist Coalition (ONAC), for their efforts to emancipate the down trodden.

At an event, titled” “Yoruba Political Living Legends of the Centenary Award”, held at the Centre for Management Development (CMD), Lagos, Aregbesola got the “Political Living Legend of the Century Award” and Mrs. Lori-Ogbebor was honoured for consistently fighting for the emancipation of minority groups in the Niger Delta and women.

ONAC Leader Comrade Adeoye Adewale said the award was in recognition of Aregbesola’s efforts to provide meaningful leadership for Osun people, adding that leadership is better appreciated when heroes are honoured in their life time.

He described the governor as a down-to-earth figure, who portrays himself as an ordinary man on an extraordinary seat, unlike his colleagues.

Adewale said: He is an honest and principled person, who has dedicated his life to truth and the service of humanity. He is the first to be presented with the Living Legend Award in Yoruba land in the last 100 years.”

Aregbesola said the award would steer him to do more for his people.

Mrs. Lori-Ogbebor said she was surprised that her efforts were noticed and pledged to do more.

The Guest Speaker and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Leeds City University, Ibadan, Prof. Ayo Olukotun, spoke on “Peoples’ power, Democracy, Livelihood”.

He said owing to the quality of leadership in Osun, the state has become a model for transformation, urging Southwest governors to work on regional integration.

Olukotun urged delegates to the National Conference to come up with a constitution that guarantees fiscal federalism, stressing that it was the only way regions could develop.

    Aregbesola visits Oyinlola for Easter

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola visited his predecessor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, at his Okuku country home on Monday for the Easter celebration.

It was gathered that the governor arrived at Oyinlola’s home around 9:30pm and left a few minutes past 10pm.

What they discussed behind doors was unknown, but sources said it might not be unconnected with the August 9 governorship poll.

After the meeting, Aregbesola took photographs with Oyinlola and his wife, Omowumi.

It was gathered that the Senator representing Osun Central District, Prof. Sola Adeyeye, accompanied by his wife, attended the Easter party at Oyinlola’s home around 2pm.

Former Governor Isiaka Adeleke and Mr. Wole Oke were also in attendance.

Speaking on the visit, Oyinlola said it was a tradition in the state for the governor to visit his predecessor during festive periods.

He said: “When I was in office, I used to visit former Governor Bisi Akande in his home, so there is nothing strange about Governor Aregbesola’s visit.”

  • Aregbesola’s education policy for children’s benefit

Aregbesola’s education policy for children’s benefit

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, defended yesterday Osun State Government’s education policy.

The literary icon said many aspects of the Rauf Aregbesola administration’s reform in education would engender balanced view of life for the children.

The renowned writer spoke yesterday in Osogbo, the state capital, at the opening of a three-day colloquium, titled: Fundamental Imperatives of Cohabitation: Faith and Secularism.

Soyinka, who is the Chairman of the Centre for Black Culture and International Understanding, Osogbo, advised that rather than criticise the governor’s education policy, it should be adopted by other states.

The globally acknowledged writer noted that children, at their level, should not be made to believe that they were superior to one another.

He said avoiding such a mindset would enable the children to learn well in a class-free environment.

Soyinka said if Nigerians agreed that children should not be distinguished by affluence, it was fundamentally wrong to differentiate them by their religions.

The literary icon said it was wise that Aregbesola thought about this, in line with the philosophy of giving to the children a level-playing field to learn and exhibit their God given talents.

He said: “I have heard some arguments based on the fact that the school uniform will reduce the children’s sense of individualism. I asked: who says this is what these children need at this tender age? I think they will be able to decide that when they grow up.

“What they need now is an atmosphere where they can learn without distraction, not a situation where children of the rich will come to school in designer dress while some will be struggling to get the fairly used cloth. It is good to go through this uniform together. With this, all children are on the same level.

“The uniform thing will stem the tide of inequality among school children. It is a philosophy that should be adopted throughout the country.”

The literary icon called for the introduction of subjects that would cover comparative religion in public schools so that children could understand the practice and philosophy of each religion.

Aregbesola said the views that would be expressed at the colloquium would be those inspired by structured thinking.

The governor said the thoughts to be shared – beginning from the maiden edition of the colloquium – would contribute to the ethical, spiritual, economic, political and social restructuring of the Nigerian soul.

He said: “Any faith, whose adherents are encouraged to maim and slaughter those who do not belong to it, cannot, in the true sense, be classified as faith. It is not good for any society. Any faith that exhorts otherwise should not be acceptable to any person.

“It is in this regard that the murderous activities of the renegade sect, Boko Haram, must be totally condemned. Those who feed their hideous viper of death do not in any way represent and serve the cause of Islam.”

Aregbesola said Osun was on the path of religious tolerance, which its people and the Yoruba nation are known for.

He said: “Since we assumed office, our administration has been more committed to the deepening of this practice through equal, non-discriminating relationship with the various faith groups in the state.

“There is freedom for all religious groups to operate and fulfil the demands of their faith. Therefore, those who accuse us of either having Islamisation agenda or favours one faith above the others do so either out of ignorance or mischief, or both.”

The colloquium was attended by top political office holders and civil servants, traditional rulers, market women and youth groups.

  • ‘Aregbesola deserves second term’

    ‘Aregbesola deserves second term’

Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) Hon. Kola Okesanjo has urged the people of Osun State to rally support for Governor Rauf Aregbesola in the August 9 election.

In a statement Lagos the politician said that the governor deserved a second term because of the impressive performance of the governor in office.

Okesanjo stressed the need for continuity to enable the governor to complete his laudable projects that Aregbesola had surpassed him predecessors both in policy and development, adding that his re-election would consolidate the rapid transformation of socio-economic development of the state.

He added: “The challenge before the people of Osun State in the forthcoming election is more of pragmatism, which should clearly inform them on how best to use their votes to further enhance development collective well being. They should be forward-looking indeed which should therefore influence their political decisions. And in a realistic sense, such appreciation of the issues should naturally guide their thoughts to vote en-mass for the re-election of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola who has shown, without doubt that a good and able leadership can really alter the course of history in such significant ways through effective performance in office effectively, the election should be about issues that can improve on the socio-economic development of Osun State rather than those primordial sentiments bothering on religion or such mundane orchestrations by the opposition in the state.”
