  • Three businessmen remanded for ‘theft of $46,940 helicopter parts’

    An Ikeja High Court yesterday remanded in prison three businessmen, Anietei Obong, Akaninyene Okpoho and James Dottie, following their arraignment for alleged theft of helicopter spare parts worth $46,940 (about N16,898,400).

    They were before Justice Oyindamola Ogala on a five-count charge of stealing, conspiracy to effect an unlawful purpose, forgery of incorporation documents and uttering of false incorporation documents.

    The special fraud unit (sfu) of the police alleged that they sold the parts to a United States (US) buyer.

    Prosecuting counsel Benneth Benedict alleged that they stole the parts from Bristol Helicopters Nig. Ltd premises at the General Aviation Terminal, Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, from 2016 to 2017

    Benedict said: “The defendants stole by fraudulently converting to their use and benefit, several helicopter spare parts.

    “The spare parts include integrated instrument display, transceiver, valve kit, NG dual indicator, symbol generator and tail rotor servo.”

    He listed the other spare parts to include tail rotor blade, fuel control unit, antenna radar and display unit.

    “The businessmen conspired to effect the unlawful and unauthorised sale of the several helicopter spare parts to one Mr Frank of Great Lake Air Support, a company in the United States.

    “The defendants forged a registered company incorporation name as well as documents entitled ‘Sales Invoice’ and ‘Export Invoice’ in the company name of Sammy Global Ltd.

    “They used the false documents to export and sell the several spare parts to Frank, their U.S.-based buyer.”

    In another instance, the prosecutor alleged that they uttered the false documents through the use of computer systems stationed in Lagos.

    According to him, the offences contravened Sections 383(1), 390(9), 465, 467(2)(i) and 518(6) of the Criminal Code, 2004.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Benedict prayed the court to remand them in prison and fix a date for their trial.

    But counsel to Obong and Okpoho, Mr Alli Abbah, and counsel to Dottie, Mr Tope Temokun, prayed the court for a short adjournment to enable them apply for bail.

    Justice Ogala will rule on their bail applications on September 11.

  • Suspected cultist remanded in Kirikiri Prison

    A 29-year-old man, Azeez Morouf, has been remanded in Kirikiri Prison for allegedly being a cultist.

    He will remain in prison custody until he meets his bail conditions.

    The police arraigned Morouf on a one-count charge before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly belonging to the Eiye Confraternity.

    Prosecuting Inspector Peter Nwagwu said Morouf was arrested on May 5 at Ogudu by some Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) officials.

    Azeez pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Y.O. Aje Afunwa granted him N200,000 bail, with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case continues on  July 9.

     

  • Man, 56, remanded for alleged attempt to defile 110-year-old woman

    A 56-year-old man, Abraham Benjamin, has been remanded in prison for allegedly attempting to defile a 110-year-old woman.

    An Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State, presided over by Mrs. Taiwo Ajibade, is trying to find out why the suspect allegedly attempted to defile the old woman.

    She ruled that the accused be kept behind bars pending receipt of legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Mrs. Ajibade said the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the DPP  for advice.

    Prosecutor Caleb Leranmo told the court the accused allegedly committed the offence on April 30 at 12, Igbehin Street, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged the accused attempted to defile the centenarian in her home before she was rescued by a good Samaritan.

    The offence, according to Leranmo, contravened Section 359 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The magistrate adjourned the case till May 22 for mention.

  • Dry cleaner, 75, remanded for ‘raping two minors’

    A Minna Magistrates’ Court has remanded a 75-year-old dry cleaner, Abdullahi Umar, for allegedly raping two minors and poking his finger in another’s genitals.

    Umar is standing trial on a two-count charge of sexual abuse and unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.

    Prosecuting Inspector Gunduma Ibrahim told the court that one Bashir Mohammed reported the matter to the state Child Rights Agency on April 15.

    Ibrahim alleged that Umar lured the complainant’s seven-year-old daughter into his room at Maje Tunga, Minna and fingered her genitals.

    According to him, during police investigation it was revealed that the defendant lured two other girls aged nine and seven, who were his close neighbours, into his room and had carnal knowledge of them on different occasions.

    He said Umar warned the girls not to tell their parents.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 19(2) and 18(2) of the Child Rights Law of Niger State, 2010.

    Umar pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecutor prayed the court for an adjournment to enable the police complete its investigation.

    Magistrate Binta Rijau remanded the defendant in prison custody and adjourned till May 9.

     

  • ‘Cultist’ remanded for neighbour’s death

    A suspected member of Aiye cult, Adebayo Ahmed, was yesterday remanded at Ikoyi Prison for allegedly stabbing his neighbour, Samuel Owawu, to death.

    Ahmed was arraigned before Justice Olabisi Akinlade on a one count charge of murder.

    Ahmed was alleged to have stabbed Owawu to death with a broken bottle over a phone belonging to an alleged gay friend of the deceased.

    According to the State Prosecutor, Monisola Oshibogun, the incident occurred on the January 16, 2016 at Oyemekun Bus stop, in Ifako Ijaiye, a suburb of Lagos.

    She told the court that the deceased and his friend, Emeka Uche, invited a man identified as Francis to their house and he made sexual advances,  which were resisted.

    The prosecutor said the deceased raised the alarm and a crowd gathered at the residence and started beating the alleged gay man.

    She said it was at this point that Ahmed and some his friends, suspected to be members of the same cult group, started demanding for the release of the gay man’s phone.

    The deceased objected, insisting that the phone which had some videos showing Francis engaging in sexual acts with other men, would be tendered as evidence to the police.

    The prosecutor alleged that Ahmed engaged the deceased in a fight, and in the process he picked up a broken bottle and stabbed him in the chest.

    She said the deceased was rushed to the Ifako Ijaiye General Hospital where he later died.

    She said Ahmed was apprehended and handed over to the police.

    Justice Akinlade ordered that he be remanded in prison.

    She adjourned the matter till May 30 for trial.

  • 82-year-old remanded for alleged N41m fraud

    In Ibadan Chief Magistrates’ Court in Oyo State has remanded an 82-year-old, Prince Aminu Musa Oyebamiji, at Agodi Prison, for alleged N41 million fraud.

    The suspect was arraigned on a three-count charge of felony to wit obtain money under false pretence.

    The offences were said to be punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. 11 Laws of Oyo State, Nigeria 2000.

    The charge sheet said the offences were committed in June 2015 in Alalubosa, Ibadan.

    Oyebamiji and others were accused of obtaining money from Mr. Adeniyi Aderemi on the pretence of awarding him a contract to rehabilitate Ahoda through Baminco Nigeria Ltd, from Agip Company.

    The offence, according to the charge sheet, is punishable under Section 419 of Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol 11 Laws of Oyo State Nigeria, 2000.

    The third count said Oyebamiji and members of his group on the same date, time and place stole N41 million, belonging to Aderemi.

    The suspect was said to have committed an offence punishable under Section 390 (9) of Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol 11 Laws of Oyo State Nigeria, 2000.

    The suspect pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Jejelaye Ogunbona granted the accused bail at N2.5 million with two sureties.

    He said the sureties must be well-known in the community, preferably landlords, who must be ready to deposit the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) or conveyance of the property with the registrar.

    He adjourned till May 3 for further hearing.

  • Suspect remanded for allegedly stealing iPhone

    A 21-year-old man, Temidayo Akomolafe, has been remanded in prison custody by an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State for alleged theft of an iPhone 4x, valued at N80,000, and a gold ring, valued at N75,000.

    The accused, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of conspiracy and robbery.

    The accused’s pleas were not taken, as the Magistrate, Mrs. Modupe Afeniforo, remanded him in prison custody and directed that the case file be duplicated and a copy sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    Police prosecutor Oriyomi Akinwale told the court that the accused allegedly committed the offence on January 18, at Aba Iya Medi on Ilawe Road, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the accused attacked the complainant, Mr. Emmanuel Adesina, with weapons and robbed him of his belongings.

    “The accused stole an iPhone 4x, valued at N80,000, and his wedding gold ring, valued at N75,000,” Akinwale said.

    The offence contravenes Section 1 (2) (a) and (b) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act 2004.

    The court adjourned the case till April 20 for mention.

  • Trader remanded for ‘theft’

    A Sokoto Chief Magistrates’ Court at the weekend remanded a 25-year-old trader, Suleiman Mohammed, for alleged theft of phones and N115, 000.

    Mohammed, 25, who lives at Tsamiyar Dila in Sokoto is facing a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and theft.

    The Chief Magistrate, Abubakar Adamu, ordered the remand of the accused in prison following the prosecution’s request to allow the police conclude investigation into the matter.

    He adjourned the case till March 19 for hearing.

    The prosecutor, Umar Rabi’u, had told the court that the offences were committed on February 2, at Tsamiyar Dila, Sokoto.

    He said the accused unlawfully entered into the home of Umar Mohammed and stole a Tecno phone and two Samsung phones valued at N100, 000.

    Rabi’u said the accused also stole N115, 000.

    He said the offences contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    Pastor remanded for alleged murder of three

    A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday remanded Pastor Chidiebere Okoroafor in prison custody for the alleged murder of three members of his church.

    Okoroafor, who was paraded by the police command last Friday, was alleged to have killed three members.

    A drama occurred at the courtroom when he was arraigned. He knelt down and said: “Yes My Lord, I killed Ada. I also pushed Uluoma, she fell down and hit her head on the floor, but I didn’t kill the baby. I just left her there.

    “Please forgive me My Lord, I did not do it intentionally. I won’t do it again.”

    The defendant was not represented by a counsel.

    After the drama, the Magistrate, K.A. Braide, said he lacked jurisdiction to hear the case and urged the prosecutor, G.A. Amadi, “to facilitate his transfer to the High Court where he will be arraigned and properly dealt with.”

    She adjourned the matter till March 27 for mention.

    The charge reads: “That you Pastor Chidebere Okoroafor on the 11th day of December, 2017 at Izuoma community Oyigbo within the Port Harcourt Magisterial District did murder Ada Concila Ezenwa by strangling her till she died and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 2 Laws of Rivers State Nigeria 1999.

    “That you Pastor Chidebere Okoroafor on the 11th day of December, 2017 at Egberu village, Afam within the Port Harcourt Magisterial District did murder Uluoma Onweagba by strangling her till she died and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 2 Laws of Rivers State Nigeria 1999.

    “That you Pastor Chidebere Okoroafor on the same date and place in the aforesaid magisterial district did murder Christable Joseph Ezenwa, an 11-month-old baby, by pushing her off from the back of Uluoma Onweagba to the ground where she broke her skull, which caused her death and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 2 Laws of Rivers State Nigeria 1999.”
