    Man, 36, remanded for allegedly raping minor

    A Federal High Court in Kano yesterday remanded a 36-year-old man, Abdulkarim Dan-malam, in prison for allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl.

    Justice Jude Dagat ordered that the accused be remanded in prison, pending determination of the case.

    He adjourned the case till March 25 for further hearing.

    The accused, a resident of Gaida quarters in Gwale Local Government of Kano State, is charged with having unlawful carnal knowledge of a minor.

    He pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecutor, Abdullahi Babale, told the court that the accused allegedly committed the offence in his home, Gaida quarters, Gwale, on November 11.

    He said the accused allegedly gave the victim N10 before defiling her.

    Babale said Dan-malam was allegedly found removing the girl’s trousers and having carnal knowledge of her.

    He said the offence contravened Section 16 (1) of Trafficking in Persons Act, 2015.

  • Man remanded for allegedly defiling minor

    A Jos High Court has ordered the remand of 39-year-old Peter John, accused of defiling his neighbour’s nine-year-old daughter.

    Although the defendant pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of rape and criminal intimidation, the judge, Justice Nafisa Musa, ordered that he should be remanded at Jos Prison.

    He adjourned the case till March 20 for hearing.

    The prosecutor, Mr. N.K. Tali, had told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the crime on July 26, 2017, at Furaka village in Jos North Local Government.

    “The accused told the police that he lured the girl to a stream and defiled her.

    “He said the girl is his neighbour’s daughter, who helped her mother in selling ‘akara.’

    “John told the police that the girl was sitting with her grandmother at their business spot when he gave her money to buy him blade.

    “The suspect said he followed the girl immediately she left to buy the blade, led her to a nearby stream and had carnal knowledge of her,” he said.

    Tali said the accused told the investigators that he saw blood gushing out of the victim’s private parts.

    “He threatened to kill her, if she told anyone, after which he returned the girl to her grandmother.

    “But luck ran out on him when the grandmother noticed that the child had difficulty in walking, and upon examination, she saw blood in her private parts, which led to the girl exposing the accused,’’ he said.

    The prosecutor told the court that a hospital examination confirmed that the girl was defiled.

    He said the offences contravened Section 282(1) and punishable under sections 283 and 396 of the Penal Code.

  • Man remanded for alleged murder

    An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State yesterday remanded a 34-year-old man, Friday Apata, in prison for alleged murder of a 40-year-old man, Sesan Akinrinmade.

    Apata, whose address was not provided, pleaded not guilty to a one-count charge of murder.

    The prosecutor, Olasunkanmi Bamikole, told the court that the accused committed the offence on January 30, at Ijadu village in Ado Ekiti.

    He said the suspect mistook the deceased for an enemy and killed him.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 325 of the Criminal Code Cap C16 Law of Ekiti State 2012.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. Modupe Afeniforo, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison.

    The court adjourned the case till March 2, pending legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    Money laundering: Ex-governor’s son remanded in EFCC custody

    A Kano Federal High Court yesterday remanded Nuriani Adamu, son of former Nasarawa State Governor  Adamu Abdullahi, in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC ) over charges of fraud and money laundering.

    He was arraigned with Felix Onyago on an amended six-count charge of money laundering and illegal diversion of N32 million.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Their counsel Mr Mamman Lawan applied for their bail under Section 36 (6)(b) 5 and Section 35 of the constitution.

    “The defendants were early in September 2015, invited and detained by EFCC and at no time were they found wanting when they were granted bail.

    “If granted bail, the defendants would not jump bail, nor commit any offence and would not tamper with police investigation, ” the lawyer  said.

    Lawan urged the court to grant them bail because the law presumes that they are innocent until proven guilty.

    The prosecuting counsel, Mr B. M.  Buhari, told the court that between December 10 and December 23, 2014, the defendants conspired to  launder money under Sections 18 (a) and 15, 2,(b) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act.

    He said on the same day Adamu transferred N18 million to Oyengbo’s  First Bank Account 2024412016.

    Buhari also alleged that Adamu on December 23, 2014, did an illicit money transfer of N9.7 million to Onyago’s First Bank account, adding they later took possession of the money.

    The prosecutor said he would call six witnesses at the next sitting.

    Justice  J K Daggard  will rule on the bail request on February 7.

  • Farmer remanded

    The Masaka Upper Area Court in Nasarawa State has remanded a farmer, Bitrus Jato, 30, in prison custody for alleged motorcycle theft.

    The Judge, Mr. Yakubu Ishaku, ordered that the defendant be remanded in Keffi Prisons after he pleaded not guilty.

    He adjourned the case till December 11 for hearing.

    The prosecutor, Mr. Frank Swem, told the court that Ayuba Robo of Adamakashim community in Masaka, Nasarawa State, lodged the theft complaint against the defendant.

    He alleged that on November 19, about 11:3 0am, the defendant entered the complainant’s compound and stole his motorcycle, valued at N117, 000.

    Swem added that the defendant absconded, but was arrested on November 20.

    He said during investigation, the accused confessed to the crime.

    Swem said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.

  • Three remanded for alleged cheating

    An Upper Area Court in Masaka, Nasarawa State, has ordered the remand of three men, David Boyi, Bulus Dio and Ibrahim Sure, for alleged cheating.

    The defendants are facing a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust and cheating.

    The prosecutor, Frank Swem, told the court that on November 15, Ehis Erabhahilemen of Jeun Masaka reported the case at Masaka Divisional Police Station.

    He said on October 26, the first defendant (Boyi), conspired with the other two and Emmanuel Sure, now at large, to commit the crime.

    Swem alleged that the defendants sold a piece of land measuring 50 by 100 ft, located at the same address, to the complainant, at the rate of N1million

    He added that it was later discovered that the land did not belong to any of them.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 97, 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

    The Judge, Yakubu Ishaku, did not take the defendants’ plea.

    He ordered that they be remanded in prison to act as a deterrent to others and adjourned the case till December 17 for hearing.

  • Alleged serial burglar remanded

    A 22-year-old man, Sodiq Lawal, who allegedly broke into shops and stole a plasma TV and other items, has been remanded in prison on the order of an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun State.

    He is facing an eight-count charge on conspiracy, intent to commit felony, shop-breaking and stealing.

    Lawal pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Dorcas Ajiboye, refused to grant the accused bail and asked his lawyer, Mr. Michael Okoh, to make a written application for the bail.

    She remanded him in Ile-Ife Prison pending the consideration of bail, saying this will act as a deterrent to others.

    The prosecutor, Sunday Osanyintuyi, had told the court that the accused, whose address was unknown, committed the offence on November 2 at Ajamopo Street, Ile-Ife.

  • Two men remanded for ‘attempted car theft’

    Two men- Sunday Ibrahim and Abdulwahab Usman- have been arraigned at a Minna Magistrates’ Court in Niger State for alleged attempt to steal a car.

    The defendants, however, denied the three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, attempt to commit an offence and mischief levelled against them.

    The Magistrate, Fati Auna, ordered that the defendants be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case till today for further mention.

    The prosecutor, Emmanuel Danladi, had told the court that Ogbodo Afam of Tunga Minna reported the matter at the police station on September 30.

    Danladi quoted the complainant as alleging that on the same date about 5:35p.m., the accused damaged his car in the process of attempting to steal it from where he parked it at Maitumbi.

    He said the offences contravened sections 97, 95 and 327 of the Penal Code.

    The prosecutor prayed the court for an adjournment, as investigation into the matter was on.

  • Housewife remanded for alleged N810, 000 fraud

    A Kano Chief Magistrates’ Court has remanded a 35-year-old housewife, Habibat Abubakar, in prison.

    She was charged with allegedly collecting N810, 000 from applicants on the pretext of securing jobs for them.

    Chief Magistrate Muhammad Idris, who gave the ruling, said the accused should remain behind bars until the next date of adjournment.

    Habitat, who lives in Babugaje Kumbotso Local Government, is standing trial on a two-count charge of alleged cheating and forgery.

    She, however, denied the charge.

    The prosecutor, Badamasi Gawuna, had told the court that a woman, Fatima Tijjani and 11 others of different addresses, reported the accused at Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission on September 6.

    He alleged that sometime in July the accused fraudulently collected N810,000 from the complainants with a promise to help them secure jobs.

    Habibat promised the complainants jobs at Kano State Senior Secondary School Management Board, he said.

    Gawuna alleged that the accused gave three offers and letters of posting to some of the complainants, which were believed to have been forged.

    The offences contravene sections 320 and 363 of the Penal Code.

    The case was adjourned till October18 for mention.

  • ‘Prophet’, others remanded for ‘defiling minor’

    A septuagenarian farmer, James Olatoye, a prophet and two others, who allegedly defiled a 12-year-old girl, have been remanded in Omu-Aran Medium Prison, Kwara State, by an Omu-Aran Area Court.

    Olatoye of Moba Compound in Aiyedun and his accomplices: Adeyeye Suleiman, 35, Toyin Adesina, 35, who claimed to be a prophet and Ojo Olayemi, 20, are facing trial for gross indecency.

    They were alleged to have subjected their victim to an act of indecency by defiling her at various times between 2016 and 2017 at Aiyedun.

    Olatoye and Suleiman pleaded guilty. Adesina (the prophet) and Olayemi pleaded not guilty.

    The Judge, Abolade Banigbe, said: “But for lack of jurisdiction, the first and second accused would have been given summary trial for their guilty stance.

    “Olatoye and Suleiman would have known their fate today, but area courts are not empowered to try summarily under Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).

    “The accused will have to be remanded in prison custody for the prosecution to conclude its investigation.”

    The prosecutor, Oshage Omoh, had objected to the bail application of the accused, saying they might tamper with police investigation.

    He said the accused and their victim lived in the village when the offence was committed.

    Omoh said the offence was contrary to Section 285 of the Penal Code.

    The case was adjourned till October 26 for mention.
