    An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State yesterday ordered the remand of a 55-year-old man, Adeyanju Basiri, in prison custody for allegedly sleeping with his daughter.

    Police prosecutor Monica Ikebulo told the court that the accused allegedly committed the offence on September 11 at Irona Street, Ado-Ekiti.

    She said the accused and a herbalist at large were arrested for allegedly attempting to use the defendant’s seven-year-daughter for money ritual.

    Ikebulo said the accused claimed he slept with his daughter nine times.

    She said the accused told the police he always used a white handkerchief given to him by the herbalist to clean his daughter’s private part after having sex with her.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 31(2) of the Child’s Right Law.

    She told the court she had duplicated and sent the case file to the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

    The plea of the accused was not taken, as his counsel, Mr. Simeon Ojo, sought adjournment, pending the legal advice.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. Dolapo Akosile, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody till outcome of the legal advice from the DPP.

    He adjourned the case till October 12 for further hearing.

    Cattle rearer, seven others remanded for ‘stealing’ N6.5m

    A Sokoto Magistrates’ Court has ordered that a cattle rearer, Attahiru Abubakar and seven others, now at large, be remanded in prison custody for allegedly attacking a businessman and stealing his N6.5million.

    Other accused now at large are Jafa’ar Abubakar (a local security man), four students: Mikailu Umar, Ileja Abu, Ibrahim Bururus and Barade Ibrahim; and Mittahu Aliu, whose occupation was not stated, as well as a teenager, whose name is being withheld.

    The accused, who live in the Sokoto metropolis, were charged with criminal conspiracy under the Robbery and Firearms (Special Division) Act, Cap. R. II, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2001.

    Police prosecutor Na’allah Jibo told the court that the accused conspired and stole money from the complainant, Alhaji Yahaya Gora, a businessman of Minonata, Sokoto.

    Jibo said the accused armed themselves with cutlasses, knives and sticks and attacked the complainant in his home, where they inflicted injuries on him and dispossessed him of N6.5 million.

    The prosecutor told the court that the complainant reported the incident at Ungwuan Rogo Police Station, Sokoto, after he was attacked.

    He said the offences contravened sections 97 and sub-sections (1) (2) (9) of the Penal Code Law.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate, Abubakar Adamu, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody, for further investigation, except for the teenager among them, who should be sent to a remand home in the metropolis.

    Adamu adjourned the case till September 7 for hearing.

  • Man, 31, remanded for ‘N350,000 land theft’

    An Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State has remanded in prison a 31-year-old man, Lamidi Alaba, for alleged land fraud.

    The accused, whose address was not provided, is being tried for fraud.

    Police prosecutor Caleb Leranmo alleged the accused committed the offence on June 23 at Ajebamidele in Ado-Ekiti.

    He said the accused obtained N350,000 from the complainant, Mr. Falana John, on the pretext of selling a plot of land to him.

    Leranmo said the offence contravened Section 419 of Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The plea was not taken, as the accused’s counsel, Mr. Jantiku Mamsa, applied for his bail, but it was refused by the magistrate.

    The prosecutor opposed the bail application, saying the accused “is a hardened criminal”, who may not show up in court, if granted bail.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Adesoji Adegboye, remanded the accused in prison and adjourned the case till tomorrow for ruling on the bail application.

    Man remanded in prison for defiling friend’s 12-year -old daughter

    A 65-year-old man, Friday Azala, was on Tuesday remanded in prison custody by an Egor Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly having canal knowledge of his friend’s 12-year-old daughter.

    Azala was accused of defiling the girl at No. 6, Agho Street, off Textile Mill road, Benin, on April 9, 2017.

    According to the prosecutor, Ben Omoruyi, the accused is a friend to the victim’s father, who is bed-ridden, and always comes to the house on the pretence of seeing his friend.

    Omoruyi told the court that the accused had defiled the girl “several times before he was caught in the act.”

    He also said the accused always lured the girl with N20, to have his way.

    When his plea was taken, Azala, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The accused said he only embraced the girl and had never had sex with her.

    “I did no such thing as having canal knowledge of her, I embrace her only on five
    occasions, and I also released on those occasions.

    “Am only been lied against by her mother because we had a misunderstanding. We are neighbours.”

    The Chief Magistrate, Igho Braimah, who ordered Azala to be remanded in prison, adjourned the case till April 19, for hearing.

  • Man remanded in prison over murder of teenager

    A 20-year-old man, Waliu Ponkunh, who allegedly hit a 14-year-old boy with an iron rod on the head and killed him, was on Monday  remanded in a Lagos prison.

    An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, said  Ponkunh should be kept behind bars at Ikoyi Prisons pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Chief Magistrate O.O. A Fowowe-Erusianfe ordered that the case file should be sent to the DPP.

    The accused is facing a charge of murder.

    Earlier, prosecutor, Sgt. Maria Dauda told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb. 15 at about 5.00 p.m. at No. 19, William Awodehin Drive, Oko-Oba GRA in Agege, a Lagos suburb.

    She alleged that the accused had an argument with the deceased about who was older, and in the process, he picked an iron rod and hit the deceased, Emmanuel Akinola, on the head.

    “He was confirmed dead when he was rushed to the hospital.’’

    The offence contravened Section 222 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section stipulates death sentence for offenders.

    The case has been adjourned until April 20.

  • Two remanded for fraudulent sale of property

    Members of a syndicate which specialise in fraudulent sale of property in Ekiti State have been charged to court by the police.

    They were arraigned before Chief Magistrate R. A. Adegboye of an Ekiti State Chief Magistrate’s Court  in Ado-Ekiti.

    The suspects, Pastor Akintoye Joseph, Ogundipe Sunday and others at large  are facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, false pretence and conduct likely to breach public peace.

    According to the police, the suspects  allegedly conspired to sell a “building at  1, Ijigbo Street, Mugbagba , Ado Ekiti, property of the late Idris Omole for  N7million, without the consent of the family”.

    They pleaded not guilty to the offences.

    The accused were granted bail of N250,000 and two sureties.

    The judge ordered them to be remanded in prison, until they are able to meet their bail conditions.

    The case has been adjourned till January 11, next year.

    Man remanded for stealing Joy soap, peak milk

    A 20-year old man identified as Omoatama Akachor has been remanded in prison custody for using a locally made gun to rob six Joy soap worth N360 and three cans of Peak Milk valued at N900.

    Omoatama who was remanded by an Evbouriaria Magistrates Court committed the offence on February 12, at No. 2, Esohe Street off Saint Saviour road in Ikpoba-Okha.

    Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Olatoye Oluwaseun, listed other items robbed by the accused to include N15,000 cash, four cans of Titus valued at N600, one Delta Soap valued at N240 and three and half yard of cloth valued at N7,500 belonging to one Iziegbe Igbinigie.

    Omoatama was arraigned on a two-count charge bothering on conspiracy and armed robbery but his plea was not taken.

    The Prosecutor said the offence contravened section 6 (b) (2) (a) (b) of the armed robbery and firearm (Special Provision) Act. Cap.RII laws of the Federation, 2004.

    Presiding Magistrates, Mrs. C.E Oghuma, ruled that the Court lacks jurisdiction to entertain the case.

    She ordered that the case file be sent to Department Of Public Prosecution for legal advise.

    Oghuma adjourned the case till April 29 for mentioning.

    • EFCC accuses Mohammed Gobir of $1m, N514m, N123m and £51,000 scam

    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday arraigned Alhaji Mohammed Gobir before Justice Raliat Adebiyi of a Lagos State High Court in Igbosere, on multi-billion naira fraud charges.

    Gobir, a former non-executive director and chairman of Business Development Committee of Afromedia Plc, is accused of fraudulently obtaining $1 million (about N198,870,000.00); N514,457,151.87; $2,102,740 (about N418,171,903.80); N123 million and £51,000 (N14,667,898.25).

    He is facing a 17-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretence, stealing, fraud, use of forged documents, and possession of forged documents.

    In a charge marked LS/2542C/16, EFCC prosecutor, Mr. A.B.C. Ozioko, told the court that between January 2009 and December 2011, with intent to defraud, Gobir obtained N514, 457, 151.87 from the firm by pretending that the amount represented the cost of facilitating and securing the sum of $70 million from his account with NATVEST Bank, London, United Kingdom, “as your investment fund in Afromedia Plc out of the sum of $250 million USD.”

    Policeman remanded for defiling minor

    A 37-year old police officer, Umar Babatunde has been remanded in prison custody by an Egor Magistrate Court for having unlawful carnal knowledge of a 9-year-old girl in Benin.

    Babatunde was alleged to have committed the offence on November 2 at No 12,  Omokaro Street off Siluko road in Benin.

    Investigating Police officer (IPO), Sergeant Vivian Akhionbare told the court that the accused has been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force since November last year when the case was reported.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge on unlawful carnal knowledge preferred against him.

    State Counsel, Mrs O.R. Ewemade, said the offence contravened section 218 of the criminal Code Cap. 48 Vol. ll laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976 as applicable in Edo.

    Presiding Magistrates, Mrs Igho Braimoh, remanded the accused in prison, and ruled that bail would be considered in the course of trial.

    She adjourned the case till May 11 for hearing.

    17 ABUAD students remanded for ‘robbery, arson’

    An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s  Court yesterday ordered 17 students of the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), who are on trial for their alleged involvement in Sunday’s violence, remanded in prison custody for alleged arson and attempted robbery.

    The accused – 16 men and one woman- were remanded in police custody on Tuesday when they were arraigned on a six-count charge bordering on rioting, illegal possession of firearms and malicious damage to school property.

    But their hope of returning to the campus to conclude their exams was dashed when new charges were added to the charge sheet.

    Police Prosecutor Samuel Osobu told the court that the accused on February 7 unlawfully committed arson by setting on fire houses belonging to ABUAD security staff.

    Osobu also told the court that the accused burgled the boutique belonging to the wife of ABUAD Founder, Mrs. Modupe Babalola, located inside the Talent Discovery Centre on the campus.

    The prosecutor also told the court that the accused also attempted to rob a branch of WEMA Bank on the campus.

    The offences, according to him, violated Section 443 (a), 411 (2) and 403 of the Criminal Code Cap C16, Laws of Ekiti State of Nigeria 2016.

    Osobu disclosed that he had had forwarded the case to the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

    At yesterday’s proceedings, the pleas of the accused were not taken as their lawyers, Peter Ogunkinle and Chris Omokhafe and eight others, sought an adjournment, pending the advice from the DPP’s office.

    Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody, pending the receipt of advice from the DPP.

    He adjourned the matter till Friday for further hearing.
