  • Eagles will bounce back, says Rohr

Gernot Rohr has said the Super Eagles have picked up lessons from the 2-0 loss to Serbia and will bounce back in time for the World Cup.

The Eagles lost to fellow World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday night in London courtesy of two second-half goals by Aleksandar Metrovic. It was a dress rehearsal for their opening Group D match against Croatia, which plays a similar style of football with the Serbs.

“Rohr commended the boys and urged them not to drop their heads because “no football team in the world wins all their games,” Eagles’ spokesman Toyin Ibitoye said.

“The coach told the team to learn from this defeat and not sulk, but rather go back to their various clubs and keep fighting. He said what was most important after such a loss is how you react, he said we have to bounce back.”

“The coach reminded the boys they had not done badly as a team and what had happened should be left in the past. He said it was a game and they had done their part and should forget the rest. We have three more friendly matches to play before the World Cup proper. Ours is to take the positives from the Serbia game, study them critically and implement.”

The Serbia loss was only the second in 14 games for the Eagles under Rohr. Contracted 20 months ago as Eagles’ coach, Rohr has won eight matches and drawn four.

  • Baruwa to Rohr: Play Uzoho in goal against Serbia

Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr has been urged to retain Deportivo La Coruna shot-stopper Francis Uzoho against the Serbian senior national team when the team takes them on Tuesday night, AOIFootball.com reports.

Uzoho, who was in goal against Poland, had a below average first half but improved in the second half and former Nigerian goalkeeper, Abiodun Baruwa believes the young goalkeeper can be better with more games and has advised Coach Rohr to give him another chance to help build his confidence in goal.

Baruwa stated this while speaking on Brila FM, monitored by AOIFootball.com.

“Uzoho did well overall against Poland, though he had a poor first half, he improved in the second half. My opinion is that the coach should give him another chance to help build his confidence. I think he will come good with time,” he said.

Nigeria battles Serbia on Tuesday night at the Hive, Barnet FC Stadium, Canons Park at 8pm.

  • Why Enyeama won’t be in Russia —Rohr

Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has reiterated that he would not rescind his decision to omit Lille goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama from Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup roster.

Enyeama called time on his international career in October 2015 following a row with former Nigeria coach, Sunday Oliseh, but there were insinuations that he may go back on his decision and rejoin the national team.

Enyeama’s inactivity for Ligue 1 strugglers Lille has counted against him and Rohr has kept faith with the goalkeepers he used during the World Cup qualifiers and November’s friendly against Argentina in his latest roster.

”He has problems in Lille. He is currently not playing and is only the number three at his side,” Rohr told Soccer Laduma.

”He wanted to switch clubs, but he didn’t find a new team. As a consequence, the question about Enyeama returning is not really up for debate.”

Enyeama, 35, was part of Nigeria’s roster for the 2002, 2010 and 2014 World Cups. Enyimba’s Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Chippa United’s Daniel Akpeyi and Spanish-based Francis Uzoho are far ahead of other candidates as the three goalkeepers to be named in the squad for this summer’s football fiesta in Russia.

  • POLAND, SERBIA GAMES: Rohr picked Nigeria’s best squad — Westerhof

Dutch coach, Clemens Westerhof has said Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr’s 28-man squad for the two friendly matches against Poland and Serbia represents Nigeria’s best squad for the Russia 2018 World Cup.

“Is Mikel in the team? What of (Wilfred) Ndidi, (Odion) Ighalo, (Ogenyi) Onazi, (Victor) Moses?,” Westerhof asked. When told they were in the team, he said Coach Rohr has unveiled his real World Cup team.

“Good, that is the best team Nigeria has at the moment. That is the team he (Rohr) will take to the World Cup.

But they must fight to get to the quarter-final, semifinal, yes. Nigeria has good players, but they must prepare very well. The coach must use good tactics at the World Cup,” he told Scorenigeria.com.ng.

Westerhof qualified Nigeria for its first World Cup in 1994, when the Eagles reached the Round of 16.

  • RUSSIA 2018 WORLD CUP No special plan to stop Messi-Rohr

COACH Gernot Rohr has said that he will not put a man on Argentina superstar, Lionel Messi when both countries clash at the World Cup in Russia. Nigeria have lost on all four occasions they faced the twotime world champions at the World Cup with skipper Messi grabbing a brace when Argentina beat the Eagles 3-2 at the last World Cup in Brazil. Rohr has now said the Eagles will defend as a team so as to reduce the threat posed by one of the best players in the world. “At this stage, there is no special plan (to stop Messi). We don’t even know whether he will play. Of course, we all know him and we know of his quality,” the Nigeria coach said in an interview published by Soccer Laduma Wednesday.

“But we also played against some really good players in our qualification and we were able to deal with them. We had Riyad Mahrez in Algerian team, we played against Sadio Mane and Senegal in a friendly. We know how to organise our defence against top quality players. “What I can tell you now is that there will be no man-marking of Messi. We did this in the old days, even me, but it’s not used too often these days. We will deal with Messi or any big player as a unit. But often you won’t be able to keep top players quiet over the whole 90 minutes.”

Messi missed his team’s 4-2 loss to Nigeria in a friendly in November in Russia and Rohr said on that the result may now be a big disadvantage for the Eagles as the South Americans will take them a lot more seriously at the World Cup. He said: “We are very cautious and have to analyse this great result in context. Argentina had played another friendly against Russia before facing us. Perhaps, they were a bit tired – they also left Russia soon after our game. “I think no one should overrate the result. I definitely won’t overrate it. It was definitely not to our advantage because Argentina will take us more seriously now. “

  • Alampasu, Ajiboye won’t be in Russia- Rohr

Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr has hinted that Plateau United goalkeeper, Dele Ajiboye and Feirense starlet, Dele Alampasu will not be included on the 23-man roster for the 2018 World Cup.

The German stated that Alampasu is inactive at his Portuguese club, while Ajiboye has not been selected in the latest squad because he was given the chance to displace Ikechukwu Ezenwa as the number one goalkeeper in the African Nations Championship team and could not do so.

”They already had their chance, remember that we invited Dele [Ajiboye]. Dele is number two in CHAN team and it’d be surprising that he is number one and Ezenwa will be number two in the Super Eagles,” Rohr was quoted as saying by Goal.com.

”Alampasu, unfortunately, is not playing. You cannot take a goalkeeper who is never playing. Uzoho made his debut for Nigeria against Argentina and did very well. He plays for the second team of La Coruna; we could see him [at the World Cup]. Ezenwa was injured but he is returning gradually and he’s played with the second team at his club already. We’ll see who will be the fittest.”

Former U-17 World Cup winner Dele Alampasu has not played a league game in Portugal since April 30, 2017 when he went the full 90 minutes in Cesarense’s 3-0 loss at águeda.

  • NIGERIA’S WORLD CUP SQUAD: Everyone must fight for a shirt – Rohr

NIGERIA’S WORLD CUP SQUAD: Everyone must fight for a shirt – Rohr

There are still chances of the Super Eagles of Nigeria going to the World Cup with some players who have not been a part of the set up since the appointment of coach Gernot Rohr.

On Thursday the coach released his list of players for the games against Poland and Serbia respectively, and in the list he handed call ups to four new players who have not tasted action under his guide.

Al-Ahly Junior Ajayi, Torino of Italy Joel Obi, Stephen Eze of Lokomotiv Plovdiv and Gabriel Okechukwu of Akwa United were named for the first time by Rohr in the 28-man.

According to the coach, there could be more new faces in the team in subsequent games, because he intends to make the team competitive to bring out the best in his favoured players.

”We must keep the door always open for new players because if we say we already have our players there’s no competition and it’s not good for the level of all the teams”, the coach said.

  • Roaring Rohr

    Roaring Rohr

I don’t envy Gernot Rohr. He has the daunting task of ensuring that Nigerians enjoy the matches of the Russia 2018 World Cup, beginning with Nigeria’s opening game against Croatia on June 16. The German updates us on his work whenever he comes into the country. And his plans are quite laudable, with many of them answering questions on our preparations for the Mundial.

Rohr isn’t asking us to pray for the Super Eagles. Nor is he stirring any controversy about his dealings with his employers, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). He isn’t talking about going back to the drawing board (it must be in tatters now) . He is telling us his plans and debunking those that are off the mark. We have been saved the needless debate of the powers of the Technical Committee over the tactician. No cheap talk of having a certain number of home-based players. We seem to know those likely to make the country’s 23-man squad to the Mundial.

Rohr’s plans are not speculative. Now we know that Vincent Enyeama is out of the squad. This Enyeama disclosure underscores the importance that Rohr attaches to our preparations. He has sent one of the goalkeepers’ trainers to Spain to drill Francis Uzoho. This means that Uzoho will be the country’s number one goalkeeper at the Mundial. The training sessions are meant to keep him fit. And the managers of Uzoho’s Spanish side have keyed into Rohr’s dream by fielding the Nigerian in the team’s recent matches. Uzoho has recorded 10 clean slates showing the huge prospect he is for Nigeria.

The friendly games against Poland on March 23 in Warsaw and Serbia on March 27 will give the manager the platform to see how well the trainer has worked on Uzoho in Spain. It will also serve as the best opportunity to improve on Uzoho’s confidence. Ezenwa has been off the pitch due to injuries; he can’t feature in such top grade games against Poland and Serbia.

Rohr knows how not to dampen the morale of contenders for each position. The truth is that the first choice goalkeeper looks like Uzoho, irrespective of what Rohr told the media on Wednesday in Germany.

“Uzoho is working hard, but he is only third choice keeper at La Coruna, and very young. Let’s work on all our goalkeepers,’’ he said, adding: “We will give the same attention to Alampasu, Alloy Agu will work on the local lads as well. We will work equally with all the goalkeepers we have available, even with Daniel Akpeyi in South Africa.” Well said, Rohr; it is better to throw the fight for positions open.

Ezenwa and Akpeyi will warm the bench, although Ezenwa may feel cheated, having manned the goalpost creditably. The World Cup is the platform for excellence, not the podium to celebrate mediocrity. Fielding Uzoho ahead of Ezenwa raises hope for Brian Idowu at the left back position. Idowu utilised the opportunity of the Argentina game to score a goal on his debut and impress Rohr, who had been pondering how best to plug the hole at the team’s left back position.

Idowu’s imposing personality and sublime skills stand him out as a defender strikers must be wary of. He also showed tremendous pace and strength while running down the left flank. His goal against the Argentines enhances his chances of manning that position for Nigeria.

Will Rohr rely on players’ experience or their current forms in picking his first 11? Elderson Echiejile is the most experienced left back, having played at the Brazil 2014 World Cup and the 2013 Confederations Cup held in Sao Paolo. Echiejile graduated from the age-grade teams to the Eagles after stints with Bendel Insurance FC of Benin City in the domestic league. What would give Rohr’s team the tenacity at the rear would be those versatile players who can play in more than one positions. Ola Aina, another Nigeria-born lad offers the manager that quality since he can play in any of the five defensive positions. Aina is distinguishing himself weekly for Hull City in the Coca-Cola Championship League in England.  He has been selected severally this season in the division’s team-of-the-week.

Tyronne Ebuehi will be the surprise first team player at the Mundial. He is immensely gifted; recall the ease with which he took the ball off the feet of  the Argentines. Ebuehi didn’t play regularly in the qualifiers, largely because of the physical style in Africa. He doesn’t have to chase his markers since he ensures that he gets to the ball first.

Such intelligent players earn their marks at the Mundial, little wonder Ebuehi has been listed in the team-of-the-week in Holland for Netherlands ADO Den Haag recently in the Dutch League. Will Rohr dump Shehu Abdullahi for Ebuehi? Reading Rohr’s mind, one won’t be shocked. Ebuehi is a natural defender, unlike Abdullahi who is a defensive midfielder. This explains why he hesitates to launch tackles inside the penalty box. Natural defenders would simply shield the ball and make it almost impossible for the striker to score, except such strikers are English – apologies to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who once described English strikers as divers for penalty kicks.

Abdullahi has made the right wing back position his. But with the way Ebuehi played against Argentina, he must roll up his sleeves to keep the shirt. Aina could dethrone Abdullahi, now that it appears that Idowu has clinched the left wing back shirt, if he does well against Poland in Warsaw and Serbia in London.

The central defensive pair of Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun have been very effective. My only fear is with injuries (God forbid), but it is in the game to be injured or become ineligible for the next game due to card offences. Pundits aren’t comfortable with Omeruo’s style, despite his playing at the Mundial in Brazil in 2014. Will Rohr hit Europe again to get Nigeria-born lads to serve as substitutes? Names, such as Kevin Akpoguma, are being dropped as prospects even as the manager is ruling out any new face in the squad. Coaches talk like that. They like to keep their cards to their chests.

What is important to Rohr is how to distinguish himself in his debut appearance at the Mundial. Having been persuaded to leave Germany FA for the Nigerian job, Rohr knows that doing well at the Mundial will raise his profile at home. It will also throw open the gate of opportunities from clubs and countries seeking to improve on their profile in global football. It is a win-win situation for Eagles and Rohr – both parties need the World Cup stage to excel.

I’m glad that we are going to the Mundial with the youngest group of players. I’m inclined to celebrate this feat because a large number of players use birth certificates, not sworn affidavits. Age cheating has been the bane of our national teams after big competitions, such as the Mundial. If we exit from the Russia 2018 World Cup, we won’t be talking about a complete overhaul of the team. We would know if the exit arose from having an inefficient manager. Those players to bid farewell in the new dispensation will also be known. Conversely, if we excel, Rohr stays and builds on what he has in place.

Nigeria, with a population of over 170 million, should make her participation at the Mundial a birthright, given what our players are doing in Europe. We hardly hear of issues of allowances from big players during competitions. Eagles’ players have truncated our chances to excel on the big stage due to the shortcomings of the federation, only to play again under the same setting. Messi and Ronaldo have issues with their federations but they give their best, knowing that the issues will be resolved. Our players make it look like the world will end if they are not paid. Don’t get me wrong;  they deserve their wages. Till date, no federation chief has been found guilty of misappropriation of funds. It means that our players must learn how to believe their federation chiefs, especially if things remain the same.

Our players know the importance of playing at the World Cup. Many Nigerians haven’t recovered from their wasted revenue when we failed to qualify for the Mundial. Nigerians make a lot of money when Eagles are doing well in major competitions. The media are awash with stories and people do brisk business selling wares with our players’ pictures, business centres accommodate more fans and eateries, bars and hotels increase their stock.

A credible outing for Nigeria in Russia will attract European scouts and managers to Nigeria in search of more talents like we had in the past.

  • FIFA 2018 W/C: Rohr did not reject friendly games says NFF President

FIFA 2018 W/C: Rohr did not reject friendly games says NFF President

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mr Amaju Pinnick on Monday said that the allegation that the Super Eagles Manager, Gernot Rohr rejected friendly games with Chile and Morocco was false.
Our Reporters recalls that speculations were rife that the Super Eagles Technical Adviser cum Manager refused to accept friendly games for the team from Chile and Morocco.
The NFF President told Newsmen in a chat in Lagos that the decision of the coach on friendly games for the team was agreed on based on tactical and technical reasons and that the team had already sealed the friendly games it would play.
“Most countries are playing three games before the world cup but the super eagles are playing five and care must be taken not to tire out the players before the world cup kicks off.
“We are taking on Poland and Serbia on March 23 and 27 respectively, Congo on May 28, England on June 2 and Czech Republic on June 6.

“There are so many considerations before a team can take on friendly matches. The NFF did not interfere and will not interfere in issues of selections and matches by the coach.
“The coach wanted a typical African traditional style of pay. Morocco and Chile has never been in the picture for the friendly games ‘’ he added.
On the appointment of new coaches by the NFF, Pinnick said that the federation followed due diligence and that the coaches were appointed based on antecedents and not sentiments.
“I am particularly impressed with the present administration for not interfering in the decisions of the NFF. It is commendable and it enables the federation to ensure that the best hands are picked without influence.
“Nigeria is having global recognition again in sports and we want to ensure that by 2022, Nigeria will have the best football team in the World.
“We have plans to build football houses across the federation for trainings. There will be two standard pitches in each state to catch them young and restore the 1994 glory to Nigeria’’ he further said.
With the NFF new tenure approaching, Picnnick however declined comments on a second term bid.
The next NFF election is billed for Sept. 30, 2017.

  • Well done Rohr but it is not yet uhuru

SIR: SUPER Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr is currently the man of the moment after his wards beat Argentina 4-2 in Krasnodar, forcing the rest of the world to recognise the team, as happened in 1994. Coming on the back of a qualification campaign that saw the Eagles emerge from the group of death undefeated, Rohr is seen as the long-awaited messiah Nigerian football has been waiting for.

To add the icing to the cake, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has also got its act together, organising friendlies, sorting out training facilities well in advance and above all signing a bonus payment agreement with the players. For the first time since 1994, we have s semblance of organisation, a well-organised team and are hopeful of success going to the World Cup.

What is most gratifying is that for the first time in a long while, we are seeing semblance of proper organisation on the pitch. No longer are we just a team of 11 talented individuals, everyone works hard to retrieve the ball, there is team spirit and we defend as a cohesive unit.

Rohr has been particularly fortunate that over the last few months, several youngsters have come to the fore and been at his disposal. However, his inexplicable attachment to players like Akpeyi, Ezenwa, Echiejile, Musa and to a lesser extend John Ogu, despite the fact that they are not good enough to compete at this level, could become Nigeria’s downfall in Russia. I am of the view that the coach should be given the free hand to pick his team as he deems fit but like everything else in life, there has got to be limits to liberties.

As things stand, it is not yet uhuru despite the spirited display and convincing win against Argentina. Yes, we have filled a few holes on the team but that should not blind us to its obvious shortcomings, which need to be fixed ahead of June next year.

For starters, he needs to find targetman and I am perplexed as to why the likes of Olanrewaju Kayode, Victor Osimhen and Taiwo Awoniyi have not been battling it out for the number nine jersey of late.

With Odion Ighalo injured, Rohr should have used the last two matches to discover which of them is best suited to the role of holding the ball up, playing with his back to goal and ploughing a lone furrow upfront. Given that he is only likely to take two targetmen to Russia, Rohr is not taking this matter seriously enough.

The main priority facing Rohr now is uncovering a playmaker who can fulfil that vital role of opening up stubborn defences, playing one-twos on the edge of the area and delver defence-splitting passes. Without both playmakers, who skippered their teams to emphatic victories, Denmark and Croatia would have struggled against stubborn defences. Nigeria needs a similar player who can thread balls through to Victor Moses and the targetman and who can spot runs in wide positions by the likes of Ebuehi and Idowu come the big dance.

For now, it appears that Alex Iwobi lacks the physicality for that role, Mikel no longer has the legs and Oghene Etebo is more comfortable as a holding midfielder.

Rohr has six months to find a playmaker or if we want to be realistic, he has to find one by March and get him to play in the two friendlies during the Fifa window.  I would start off by suggesting the teenage sensation Kelechi Nwakali, currently on loan to VVV Venlo in Holland from Arsenal but other candidates can also be looked at.

At the back too, our “Oyibo Wall” of Leon Balogun and Ekong has been solid but against Argentina, it exposed flaws that we did not know existed. For instance, for the first time, I noticed that Balogun can be susceptible to pace on the counter-attack and will struggle against pacy forwards.

In addition, we know also know that both players struggle to distribute the ball effectively out of defence. Rohr should not allow them to become too comfortable due to the lack of competition, so should look for other quality centrebacks.

In a nutshell, thanks to the emergence of Uzoho, Ebuehi and Idowu we no longer have a crisis in the goalkeeping and fullback positions, however, if we want to make an impact in Russia, we still need to find a targetman and a playmaker.
