How Mikel, Rohr Voted in FIFA Best Football Award

The two Nigerians who were eligible to vote in the 2017 FIFA Best Football Award were Super Eagles Coach, Gernor Rohr and the team captain John Mikel Obi.

According to FIFA, National team coaches and their team captains could vote among other categories for the Best Men’s Coach and the Best Men’s Players.

And doing justice with their votes for the categories Super Eagles Captain, Mikel and his national team coach tolled the-same line of thought as they voted Argentina forward and Barcelona ace, Lionel Messi for the Best Men’s Players award.

Some of the Nigerian ex-international present at the London ceremont were Emmanuel Amunike(L) and Austine Okocha

While Mikel nominated Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Buffon Gianluigi as the best to compete for the honour, Rohr named the trio of Messi Lionel, Griezmann Antoine and his German compatriot and goalkeeper; Neuer Manuel as the best three for the award.

But, FIFA went with the majority as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar won the vote as the best three, before the Real Madrid ace, Ronaldo Outshined his rivals with the highest number of vote and was eventually crowned by FIFA as the Best Player in 2017.

Both Captain and Coach also voted the different ways for the Best Men’s Coach 2017 Category.

While the Super Eagles foreign manager cast his vote along the line of the majority that voted in the category, john Mikel Obi did not.

Rohr voted Zinédine but Mikel voted the head coach of his former club in the English Premier League, Chelsea Antonio Conte.  Mikel had some playing time under the manager before moving to Chinese Super League.

NFF President, Amaju Pinnick and Worlf Football Star, Lionel Messi at the FIFA Best Football Award ceremony in London on Monday.

Mikel listed Allegri Massimiliano as his best second coach and named Zidane Zinédine for the third position.

After picking Zidane, Rohr picked head coach of the Germany national team, Löw Joachim as the second best coach in the category and named Conte Antonio as the third.

But, Zidane won the honour as the FIFA Best Men’s Coach for the year 2017.

Some of the Nigerians who graced the Best FIFA Football Awards 2017 (Formerly Called Ballon d’Or 2017) included, former Nigerian international Austine Jay Jay Okocha and Emmanuel Amunike. NFF President and Amaju Pinnick were also in London for the prestigious ceremony.

  • Rohr, the right choice

Nigeria needed a quick fix for the biggest brand in the country. It was lying prostrate, waiting for the surgeon’s death certificate. The oxygen bag was running out of gas. There was panic everywhere.  Nigeria had been eliminated in two consecutive Africa Cup of Nations, a competition which should be our birthright, given the exploits of our young men overseas.

Our age-grade teams were fumbling, losing to countries we could have beaten easily. Indeed, the female soccer teams were not faring better, in spite of the fact that we started the game much earlier than most African nations. The teams that made it to the world stage showed their naivety, no thanks to the quality of coaching the players were exposed to. So, the need for change became inevitable to revive the game.

Soccer is Nigeria’s most popular game. It is like a religion here. It unites Nigerians, such that when it is played everything comes to a halt – for the duration of the game. Most governments, especially during the jackboot era of the military used soccer as their biggest Public Relations (PR) tool. I remember how the Atlanta ‘96 Olympic Games’ gold medal team was celebrated on all the front pages of American newspapers, despite Nigeria’s pariah nation status in the Sani Abacha years.

People’s perception of the country changed, such that former President Olusegun Obasanjo was presented with Austin Jay Jay Okocha’s Paris Saint Germain (PSG) jersey during one of his visits to France. For a long time, the pre-face of the German Bundesliga had one of Okocha’s wonderful goals as the symbol of the domestic game.

So, when the door was thrown open for a foreign coach for Nigeria to re-jig our soccer, people waited to see the country’s choice. Many renowned coaches’ names were dropped. Some others with less pedigree than those who had handled the Eagles tried their luck. There was stalemate. The committee charged with the responsibilities of picking the new manager opted for Belgian Tommy Saintifet, who was rejected by former Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi. NFF President Melvin Amaju Pinnick sneezed at the choice, preferring Franco-German Gernot Rohr.

Blue murder, Technical Committee members screamed. Many Nigerians who rooted for a high profile manager for the Eagles, considering the stature of most of our Europe-based players, sneered at the choice.

Rohr’s previous records at Burkina Faso etc couldn’t match what the committee wanted. They considered the stature of our players as being too big for Rohr, who coached African countries whose players were not as big as ours. Some people argued that Clemens Westerhof and Johannes Bonfrere, who have the best records with the Eagles, didn’t have intimidating career records, but they picked our best players and gave them the feats they used to get other jobs after exiting the Nigerian job.

For Pinnick, it had to be Rohr based on researches he conducted with technical experts in FIFA and CAF. They recommended Rohr, despite his inexperience with big African team. Rohr was doing technical jobs for the German Football Federation. His employers were excited that he was being tipped for the Nigerian job. In fact, Pinnick talked with Rohr’s former employers in Africa. They recommended him strongly and cited his fatherly relationship with his players. Nobody was shocked by Pinnick’s actions, coming especially after the Sunday Oliseh saga.  The buck stopped on Pinnick’s desk and he took the risk in giving Rohr the Nigerian job, a gamble he confesses he took that turned out very well.

Was it worth the gamble when most of our players were warming the bench in their European clubs? Yes. Rohr provided the missing link for our players by visiting their European clubs’ managers to find out what their problems were. Rohr’s sessions with our players’ managers changed their mindset about our relationship with our players beyond just playing for Nigeria.

These European managers got assurances from our coach. The discussions helped our players. It became easy for our boys to leave their teams and return without squabbles or losing their first team shirt. Unlike in the past when our players lost their shirts after coming home to play for their country.

Rohr succeeded because he watched our players. He didn’t rely on second parties before taking his decisions. He had an incredible scouting team that identified new players. But he watched them unnoticed – to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. Rohr’s players’ selection was flawless. Those who did well earned their places. It showed in the way the Eagles played.

Rohr’s biggest impact in the Eagles has been his decision to field younger players, which has drastically reduced the average age of our players to 26. We have a mobile team which competes at any pace during matches. In picking players, Rohr chose Nigeria-born lads whose ages we can vouch for to replace our stars in the twilight of their careers. Today, the Eagles can boast of Victor Moses, Leon Balogun, Troost-Ekong, Aina Ola and Alex Iwobi as some of the additions from Nigerians in the Diaspora.

I was in Ndola last year when Nigeria beat Zambia at home. Rohr ensured that the players bonded as a unit. He fought for new welfare packages for his boys. His methods enthralled them  because they were seeing what they had in their European clubs. Nigerians forgot the code of conduct act which addresses discipline largely because Rohr is an advocate of keeping to camp rules. We had a few cases of players’ unruliness but the coach handled matters maturely.

Indeed, Rohr stood by his players in everything. He took responsibility when the team didn’t play well. He applauded them in victory but was quick to remind them of  the task ahead – qualifying for the Mundial and doing very well. These attributes by the manager created the right synergy between the coaches and the players.

Rohr has used the last 11 months to introduce new players into the team, such that Nigerians can easily pick 14 who will be in the Eagles squad, barring injuries. The manager’s transparent handling of the team is such that no one will be surprised if Vincent Enyeama returns to the team. Enyeama stormed out of the team after a feud with the former Eagles manager Sunday Oliseh, himself an ex-international and captain of the team. Rohr thinks the team needs him. He wants to excel in Russia and needs our best, which is what he can get from Enyeama’s experience. It is heartwarming that Enyeama has been recalled by his France side. This will help him regain his form and agility. The NFF should let Enyeama return. At best, he could be made to apologise to the team.

Eagles’ defence is on the verge of being fixed. We can heave a sigh of relief about the central defence where Troost Ekong and Leon Balogun have been awesome. We can smile now that Mohammed has mastered his act at the right back position. Many people have blamed Elderson Echiejile for his role in the left back position. I shudder to differ here. Those who function on the left side for the Eagles’ attacking line hardly fall back to retrieve the ball. This flaw leaves Echijile with the task of marking the opposition’s right back, their right sided midfielder and their right winger. Marking three men is quite an impossible task. Rohr needs to instruct Victor Moses, Mikel Obi and Alex Iwobi to fall back. Iwobi does; Moses and Mikel don’t.

I have watched Eagles’ game against Zambia in Uyo. I noticed that our defenders could not sprint. The Zambians outran us in the defence. You need to check this flaws, knowing that most big strikers are fast. I don’t think that Eagles midfield can compete against teams with taller and bigger players. Our players can easily be shoved aside. We need strong markers, such as Oguenyi Onazi. The Mundial is a different kettle of fish.

Like a true professional, Rohr has asked his employers to settle all financial issues with the players before the camp opens. NFF chieftains rose from their Annual General Assembly (AGA) on Thursday in Jos with some resolutions.

According to NFF Second Vice Chairman Shehu Dikko: ‘’NFF would work to ensure we discuss and agree all fundamental issues with the players and officials as per training camps, bonuses, allowances, appearance fees, rewards etc for the World Cup 2018 and agreement put in place before the year 2017 runs out and so the players in the World Cup squad would know what they are entitled to, what they get for performances and when and how the money would be paid and from which source. So this would certainly ensure a rancour-free and optimum motivation and concentration for the World Cup by all parties which could help deliver a great performance.

‘’ NFF have the objective to see if we can prosecute the World Cup with “Zero Public Budget” meaning we will give it our best shot to source funding from our sponsors, new commercial and business development activities, fees from participation at the World Cup etc to fund the World Cup activities. Hopefully, we will achieve this noble objective and we may end up even declaring surplus from participation at the World Cup and or worst case require little intervention from public purse.’’

So help us God, my father would always say to such propositions.

  • Rohr targets three points from Cameroon clashes

Rohr targets three points from Cameroon clashes

NIGERIA head coach Gernot Rohr says his side will do everything possible to defeat Cameroon in their upcoming encounters.

Super Eagles square off with Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions in back to back 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month.

Nigeria will host the Indomitable Lions in Uyo on 1 September 2017, while the return match is scheduled to take place in Yaounde, Cameroon three days later.

“I discussed with the chairman of the technical committee and technical director about the match against Benin Republic and the preparation for Cameroon,” Rohr told Goal.

“We hope to do everything to win the first match in Uyo. We have a list of 29 players for the two games – 23 plus six players on the stand by because we could have problems.

Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel, who plays for Chinese club Tianjin TED, is back in the Super Eagles squad after missing the 2-0 defeat to South Africa in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in Uyo last Junen

“Some players will be playing in the UEFA Champions League and league matches, so we must be careful and be prepared because we could have problems either at their clubs or even in the first leg game in Uyo,” he added.

“We know that in these two games, we need at least three points and the best is to get it in the first game. To win the games, I think we have a team which is stronger than the last time with more experience because three other key players are back now.

Rohr names Mikel Obi, 22 others for battles with Cameroon

Team captain Mikel John Obi and striker Odion Ighalo return to the Super Eagles as Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr yesterday released the list of 22 players for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying ties against Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions.

Also returning are Germany –based defender Leon Balogun who missed the World Cup qualifier against Algeria and the Africa Cup qualifier against South Africa and Chelsea wing back Victor Moses who missed the duel with the Bafana Bafana in June due to injury.

Israel –based strike Anthony Nwakaeme gets a first call.

Rohr keeps regular players like goalkeepers Daniel Akpeyi, Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Dele Alampasu, defenders William Ekong, Elderson Echiejile and Abdullahi Shehu, midfielders Ogenyi Onazi, John Ogu, Wilfred Ndidi and Oghenekaro Etebo, and forwards Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho.

Nigeria will host reigning African champions at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo on September 1, before flying to Yaounde for a quickfire return session on September 4.

The Super Eagles are top of Africa’s 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Group B with six points, after wins over Zambia and Algeria in their first two matches, while the Lions lie second with only two points following 1-1 draws with Algeria and Zambia.

Seven other players have been placed on standby, but any of them would be contacted to move to camp only in the case there is any issue with any player on the list of 23.

  • Don’t pull Rohr down

The knives are out. Critics who have been silenced by the results recorded by Super Eagles Technical Adviser Gernot Rohr are up in arms, with one objective – pull Rohr down. Curiously, they have returned with the warp argument that Nigerian coaches would have done better. They have forgotten so soon that Nigerian coaches have failed with the country’s representatives to the Confederation of Africa (CAF’s) inter club competitions since Enyimba FC last won it in  2004.

Thrown into the dust bin  are some of Rohr’s gains in rebuilding the Eagles, with the inclusion of Kelechi Iheanacho (Manchester City FC of England, Alex Iwobi (Arsenal FC of England), Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City FC of England), Troost Ekong (Gent FC of Belgium), Simon Moses (Gent FC of Belgium) et al. The immediate impact of these players’ inclusion was the high level of competition in the team. Sadly, this edge suffered a setback following injuries to key players, such as skipper Mikel Obi, goalkeeper Carl Ikeme and defender Leon Balogun. Victor Moses’ toe surgery further crippled a side that had found its rhythm in previous matches. Had the quartet played against the South Africans, the result would probably have been different. This is not to say that we lost because of their absence. No. We had lost games with these stars playing but they would have made the difference,  with their experience. Ikeme would have done better than a fumbling Akpeyi.

Eagles’ outing against South Africa underlined the importance of the quartet. Akpeyi’s errors were too elementary. If Akpeyi was more experienced, he would have stopped the South African attacker, knowing that he was the last man in the defence. If Akpeyi had fouled the attacker outside the box, he would have been shown a red card but the second goal would not have been scored.

Balogun and Mikel wouldn’t have abandoned the defence in a bid to get the equaliser, knowing that a counter attack would  be disastrous, which was what it turned out to be with the back-breaking second goal. Either Mikel or Balogun or both would have remained to protect the rear from the counter-attack.

Had Victor Moses played, the South Africans would have been kept busy, especially in the first half when the Eagles tried to impress. If Nigeria had scored from Moses’ darting runs, the visitors would have panicked. Iheanacho and Iwobi were not at their best, perhaps because of their in-today-out- tomorrow appearances for Manchester City and Arsenal in the European season.

Of  importance in Saturday’s defeat is the absence of the 12th man inside the stadium – the ever vocal Nigerian supporters club. They were missing. They watched in awe as if our players were facing the executioner; permit my usage of this coinage. In the past, the restive supporters would have begun the

Rohr goes for 4-3-3, drops Omeruo

Reports  reaching Owngoal nigeria.com has it that FC Porto Nigerian defender Chidozie Awaziem will pair William Troost-Ekong in the heart of Nigerian defence when they take on South Africa today.

Awaziem was selected ahead of Chelsea defender Kenneth Omeruo as coach Gernot Rohr wants to work with majority of the players who were with him in the training tour of France.

The coach maintained the bulk of the squad that defeated Togo 3-0 in their last friendly game with Mikel Agu and Ikechukwu Ezenwa the only players dropped for the returning duo of Ogenyi Onazi and Daniel Akpeyi.

It’s still unclear if the dropping of Omeruo who has been a stalwart in the heart of Nigeria’s defence since 2013 has anything to do with the physiological edge South Africa striker Tokelo Rantie has over him.

The last time Nigeria played South Africa in Uyo, the game ended 2-2 but Omeruo struggled to keep the rampaging forward in check, and with the forward set to lead the line again for South Africa today, it could be that he has cost Omeruo his spot in the Nigeria team for the clash.

Rohr has also picked 4-3-3 as the style his team will adopt against South Africa, who are hoping to end an unpleasant run of no win against Nigeria in any competitive game, as their only win came in a friendly game in 2004.

Rohr breaks silence over exclusion of Onyekuru

The decision of Gernot Rohr coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria to exclude Henry Onyekuru from his list of players for the training camp and friendly game against Corsica has generated a lot of debate.

Onyekuru has become the darling of most European teams following a whirlwind first season in the Belgium top flight, where his 20 goals in all competitions has helped modest and newly promoted side Eupen preserve their top flight status.

However the 19 year old wasn’t called up by the coach of the senior team of Nigeria due to reasons which according to one of his aides bothers on properly monitoring of the player before inviting him.

” Hello. Onyekuru is not being ignored. To the best of my knowledge the coach is monitoring him and he will get a chance soon. I’m sure”, Tunde Adelakun posted on social media in response to a question over the national team chances of the forward.

As exclusively reported by Owngoalnigeria.com, the forward was initially in the list of players called up for the manager for Eagles upcoming activities, but was dropped for reasons best known to the coach of the team.

Hot on the heels of allegations of favouritism in team selection levelled against Gernot Rohr the coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria by Nosa Igiebor,, another player has accused the manager of the same thing.

Nosa claimed to have been benched for players he is better than in the World Cup 2018 Qualifiers against Zambia in Ndola which Nigeria won 2-1.

Another player who has also suffered same fate has backed Igiebor for his brave stand, as he too suffered the same fate ?with the Super Eagles under Franco-German coach Rohr.

” Nosa is correct in pointing it out, but maybe he did it at the wrong time. To be honest some players are his favourite. You see him speak with them on a regular while others like me and four other players he rarely speaks with us”, he told Owngoalnigeria.com on the condition of anonymity.

” I know it’s normal for a coach to have some players he is close to but it shouldn’t be so glaring. A lot of us feel he is not carrying us along, but we can’t speak out now because the team is doing well. At the appropriate time, we will spill the beans”.

  • Rohr disappointed by Burkina Faso no-show

Rohr disappointed by Burkina Faso no-show

SUPER Eagles coach Gernot Rohr is hugely disappointed his team will no longer play a second friendly in London against Burkina Faso as the team still plan to break training camp on Tuesday.

Arrangements are however on to pitch the Super eagles against a Premiership side in place of the botched Burkina Faso match.

Nigeria played out a 1-1 draw with Senegal Thursday night in London.

“Rohr was disappointed his team will not play a second friendly in London,” an official informed SCORENigeria

The Super Eagles’ second international friendly, against Burkina Faso in London scheduled for Monday was cancelled, after seven players in the Burkinabe contingent failed to secure entry visas into the United Kingdom.

“The match in question is called off due to no fault of either the organizers or the Nigeria Football Federation. We will announce further plans for the Super Eagles’ preparation for these two important qualifying campaigns in due course.”

There is no British Embassy in Ouagadougou, and officials of the Federation Burkinabe de Football had been shuttling between Accra and Ouagadougou for visa processing. FBF sources said the Embassy in Accra told them last week to proceed to Morocco (where the Etalons played the Atlas Lions on Friday) and that the visas would be issued there.

However, the applications were still pending at the British Embassy in Morocco as at close of work on Friday, the last working day before match day in London.

Rohr woos Chelsea’s Ola Aina for Eagles

SUPER EAGLES coach Gernot Rohr has confirmed that he has held talks with Chelsea wonderkid Ola Aina regarding his international future.

As exclusively reported by allnigeriasoccer.com, the right fullback visited the Super Eagles Crowne Plaza Hotel camp in London shortly before the friendly against Senegal on Thursday, alongside his father, for discussions with the German.

“It is normal to have this situation, when we have very good player [like Ola Aina] who can pick two teams. We always leave the door open to young talent,” said Rohr according to goal.com.

Rohr hands No. 10 role to Iwobi

John Obi Mikel absence from Nigeria’s upcoming friendly games against Senegal and Burkina Faso in London has paved way for Alex Iwobi to take his spot in the team.

Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Gernot Rohr usually deploys Iwobi as a left winger, but will play him just behind the main striker in the upcoming friendly games in London.

Rohr will most likely rotate his players for the second game against Burkina Faso, but he has already lined up the players he intends to use in the March 23rd friendly game against Senegal.

Iwobi will reportedly play as part of a midfield three alongside the duo of Eddy Onazi and Leicester City highly rated defensive midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.

Oghenekaro Etebo who has been widely tipped to play behind the striker will now play from the left, while Victor Moses will play from the right according to leaks gathered by Owngoalnigeria.com.
