  • Curtains drawn in Russia

Coming to Russia for the 2018 World Cup was with a lot of fabulous stories which became what they are – a mirage. As first time visitors, we expected to see a rustic Russia craving for civilisation. How wrong we were. What we  saw dazzled us – state-of-art facilities.

I travelled to at least seven cities where the games held and the environment shocked me. I flew domestic airlines. The  aircraft were new, comfortable and noiseless. The airports in these seven cities are top notch, unlike what we have in Nigeria. As we taxied on landing at these airports, it was a great spectacle watching many other aircraft hit the skies one after the other. But the most fascinating was watching aircraft landing as if they were on a queue. I had a quick flashback to the harrowing experience of having a presidential or VIP movement in Nigeria, where aircraft were made to hover in the skies endlessly.

Volgograd and Kaliningrad, for instance, are not as strategic as Lagos and Abuja, but their airports dwarf the ones in the aforementioned places in Nigeria.  Little wonder Russia is listed among countries with great aviation industry.

There are a few rustic places but it was apparent that things are looking up for good. All through the 33 days that I spent in Russia, only one instance of racism was recorded. It could be attributed to a happenstance, unlike what we were fed with before we came.

In Saint Petersburg, for instance, when we boarded a taxi, the driver told us that we could make the distance from the airport to Park Inn by Radisson Hotel in 25 minutes for 1,300 rubbles, if we followed the expressway. He gave us the flipside to this trip taking us an hour to travel, but that we will pay 1,150 rubbles. We chose the expressway option and we marveled at what we saw.

Incidentally, going to the airport from the hotel, the cab man took us through the longer route, where the traffic reminded us of Lagos. The heave movement of people while we struggled through the streets captured the size of Russia. But we found comfort in the serene setting of the small lakes, many of them looking at artificial ones provided. This setting wasn’t just bland, we saw tourists in their droves utilise the boats and other voyage apparatuses to enjoy their time. What struck us on our way back to the hotel was that hosting of the 2018 World Cup informed the need for the development in the country that will soon catapult them to being tagged a developed country.

Indeed, going to Saint Petersburg by bus drew the ire of The Punch Sports Editor Festus Abu, when he saw the electric bus plying the roads with passengers disembarking before every traffic light. What drew Abua’s angst against was when our normal bus queued behind the electric bus obeying the traffic light. It looked like a fairytale to Abu. Of course, the silent thought of seeing our bus on the same path with the electric bus.

Surprised! Don’t be. The source of power for the bus in front of ours came from above us, making it absolutely impossible for us to be electrocuted. The roads were eight tracks on each side with walkways several metres apart from vehicular movement. Scenes arising from accidents were quickly demarcated by the relevant agencies with a towing vehicle racing to the spot in less than eight minutes, we were told. Those people who disobeyed the traffic laws by parking on both sides of the roads returned to find their vehicles towed. No preferential treatment. These mechanisms eased traffic in the cities.

Boarding the bus after the game against Iceland in Volgograd exposed us to how people pay for such services. Non-accredited passengers slid their cards through the mechanism by the side of the door to pay for their trips. No conductors. No rough necks or what we call agberos. No indiscriminate dropping and picking up of passengers on the streets. In fact, we walked over six kilometers from where Volgograd stadium was situated before we could board the bus back to the airport to catch our flight to Saint Petersburg. Accredited people walked into the buses free on match days, but you must show your World Cup cards. The bus driver won’t move his vehicle if people stood. No overload, like we say here.

The World Cup reinvented Russia but the beauty of the two halves of the cities was that money was properly utilised so much so that it won’t come as a surprise if the older structures are modernised after the Mundial, given the contrasting outlooks of the two halves. In Russia, high

rise buildings are in vogue. They symbolise the housing estates for the people. The buildings are structured in such a way that the over 140 million people are accommodated. This is not to say that we don’t have the hewers of wood and drawers of water here. They exist. No surprises. If you try to give alms to them out of pity, other Russians urge you not to, insisting that you would be arming them with cash to perpetuate nefarious acts.

The people were friendly. It looked like they had been taught how to relate with visitors. Even with the apparent language barrier, they smiled at your sign language and offered you the option of asking the next person if he or she could solve the problem. Those who understood little English were helpful, with a few using the telephone to get you cabs or explain in their language where you were headed for.

In Moscow, I met Anthony, my Uber taxi driver who picked me from the airport to my Younos hotel. He told me to be very careful of picking cabs on the road, that it is better and safe for me to use Uber or Yandex. When I joked that they couldn’t be like Naija people, Anthony laughed and said, they are ‘better‘ than Nigerians when it comes to ‘negative acts‘. He also told me that most of the drivers understood English perfectly but will pretend not to understand  to ‘over charge‘ a passenger who does not speak Parosky- the Russia language. I experienced this when I arrived at St. Petersburg before the Super Eagles Vs Argentina match. A Yandex taxi driver restarted his handset and put me off my order, placing me on a minute per 3RUB on a trip that should take 25 minutes. When I placed my order, the price was to be 215RUB but after 15 minutes into the trip, the meter already had over 500RUB. I stopped the driver along the way and we had a bit of slanging match of words. The police were called to settle the issue. The policeman was efficient and also had some words for the taxi driver for trying to ‘cheat’ me because I don’t understand their language. I was happy as the police ensured my next ride was smooth and for the right price too.

On my train ride from Moscow to Saint Petersburg, I was told by the man behind the counter that the journey will be over 10 hours. I was deflated. The “Abuja/Lagos” by luxury bus scenario started playing through my mind. I almost told the man to cancel my ticket. But someone behind me said, ‘‘go on the train you will enjoy it.’’ With a sigh, I grudgingly told the man to print out my ticket. I went to the sit out area which looked more like sitting at airport lounges. That gave me some kind of reprieve. When I boarded the train, I stopped in my track because it was like being on one of those international flights. Airconditioner, spacious sleeping beds, phone charging points, free wifi, coffee making points and courteous ‘hostesses’. I woke up when the train arrived in my destination, after sleeping off as if I was at home.

Back to the World Cup venues, I can’t recall any encounter with hoodlums within the stadium premises. The stadium was a long walk away, which gave the security operatives enough time to fish out likely lawbreakers. The gateways to the matches were never crowded because there were many options and the devices used to detect fraudulent tickets starts from the first gate. It was absolutely impossible for unqualified people to assess the stadium, irrespective of the time the games held.

All the gates were thrown open early enough to avoid stampede or create a crowded setting where fans lose their valuables to urchins. Did I really see them?

Hosting the 2018 World Cup was a commercial success for Russia, the government and its citizenry as they milked the benefits of a huge influx of people into the country for over 38 days. The average income per capital per head of the Russian must have risen. The citizens’ purchasing power will be increased. The volume of cash and investment which came with hosting the Mundial for the Russian government is unquantifiable. Indeed, all the cities in Russia are construction sites with massive modernisation of the infrastructure to the benefit of the people.

Today is the 2018 World Cup finals between 1998 winners France and Croatia in Moscow. I chose not to preview this game because it would amount to repeating what had been published. I expect an exciting game. No predictions please. Instead, the set of players who are hungrier to lift the World Cup should accomplish their dreams.

  • Red Devils on rampage

The Red Devils of Belgium looks poised for their first ever World Cup final berth in history when they meet Former Champions, Les Blues of France in the 1st Semifinal of the mundial at the 65,000 seated, St. Petersburg Stadium in Russia Tuesday at 1900 hours West African Time. On paper, the Belgians even look good as World Champions already.

The stadium itself is a show of modernity designed by Japanese Architect, Kisho Kurosawa in the shape of space shift with retractable roof and a sliding pitch meant to keep the turf at 15*c. Surely you must have seen players gliding gleefully on the turf, which is a spectacular sight.

Contrary to speculations of football permutations who are giving the match to France with 38% votes, those who think penalties will decide the match at 29% or those who think Belgium will coast easily to the finals 33% did, current performance gives it to Belgium.

Records before now states that they have met a whopping 74 times with W24 to France, W30 to Belgium and D19, that record is like considering the Old Black Stars of Ghana whipping The Green Eagles now Super Eagles of Nigeria. Different story now.

Both have played 5 games in this tournament where Belgians are the highest scorers with 14 goals to France haul of 9 goals. Belgium conceded 5 goals while France let in 4 but when you look at the goals difference of each country, the +9 of Belgium is the total that France scored but when you consider the 4 goals France conceded, there is an imbalance. Goals win matches and if Belgium come smoking, Les Blues are Goners. Bet.

The News Agency of Nigeria went to town asking how Nigerian fans who love Thierry Henri called Igwe, meaning King, for his penchant for goals while at Arsenal F.C., but now Assistant Coach for Belgium feel sitting on Belgian bench. They were all at sea, confused like an Egba man who was elected to lead Kiriji war against his Egba kinsmen by a foster Igbajo people.

Oliver Giroud who cross-carpeted from Arsenal to Chelsea and the oldest player for France at 31 said “I know Thierry would have loved to be coach of France and we will get him back”. The Nigerian fans made two requests, that Belgium allow Thierry to go seat elsewhere and that FIFA cameras would spare him showing emotions.
Thomas Meunier will be off for France because he bagged the second yellow in the quarters but Blaise Matuidi will be back. It will be interesting to watch Belgian captain, Eden Hazard face the hard tackles of his Chelsea team mate, Ngolo Kante. Oliver Giroud also of Chelsea however thinks much more of his international team mate, and France Captain, Goal Keeper Hugo Lioris as being better than his Chelsea mate and Belgium goal tender, Thibaut Courtehu. Thinking of penalty shoot outs?

Uruguayans will officiate the Belgium-France match. Centre Referee is Andre Cunhe; the two astant Refs who are his country men are Nicolas Taran and Manricio Espinosa. The 4th and 5th Refs are Cesar Arturo Ramos and Marvin Torrendera both from Mexico.

It is expected that the match will not go to the wire. France spanked Belgium 3-1 in the 1st round in 1938 and shoved same Belgium 4-2 at the Bronze medal battle of 1988. This is Belgium’s 2nd world cup semi. They lost to eventual winners Argentina in 1986.

Fireworks are expected from the two sides who have gotten the experience of the quarry site in this tournament, What do you think of a France that played goalless with Denmark; dismissed Argentina with their megastars of Messi, Di Maria, Aguero, Mascherano etc 3-2 at the round of 16 and pecked Uruguay 2-0 in the quarters.
Belgium caged the aristocratic Three Lions of England 1-0; dismissed the stubborn Japanese 3-2 and shoved off the prolific Samba boys of Brazil who believe the world cup is their birth right 2-1 in a breathtaking encounter.

The attackers of Belgium are as dangerous as rattle snakes. Belgium kept injuring all opponents through set pieces especially corner kicks. Fellaini leads six other tall players in the Belgian squad. Most of the goals are through powerful headers. Hazard is terribly hazardous when on duty. Belgium needs an antidote for the lethal shots of Griezmann of France.

The two teams know what is at stake. Belgium knows this kind of opportunity comes perhaps once in a life time. The team is a bunch of relatively young folks. Lukaku has been a star from age 16 and has 4 goals behind Harry Kane of England but the third goal scored against Japan that came through an Eden Hazard pass he jumped over for Chadu to slam in in 90+4 minute.

France is regarded as an African team because they have 8 blacks or Africans in the team who got their citizenship. France plays physical football like Africa. I suspect that the team that will go out is the team that commits error.

  • More GO RUSSIA promo winners depart for Russia

  • An English-speaking Russian

The 2018 World Cup may be the best thing to have happened to Russia in recent times. The world is viewing the country through different lenses because of the sights and sounds of what has been a fantastically entertaining tournament.

The organisation has been excellent and so has the reception by the people been. We have not witnessed some of the delays in completion of stadia and other infrastructure as happened with some of the recent tournaments. Racism has so far not reared its head.

Today’s Russia is a world removed from some of the narratives pushed by the West. The beautiful and scenic city of St. Petersburg could be anywhere in Europe or America – with its broad avenues, efficient transport and massive malls.

Still, Russia remains to a great extent a closed society. One found it curious that in a city hosting many matches of the World Cup there was little concession to the fact that there would be an influx of tourists from all corners of the globe who don’t all speak Russian. Very few signs were in English, French or any other popular international language.

The upshot was that it a nightmare for the adventurous tourist looking to take in the sights. Very few people on the streets spoke English and hotel and shop staff were only slightly better.

On the day before Nigeria took on Argentina, our intrepid team of four decided to shop for a couple of personal items after picking up our laminated Fan IDs. All the signs were in Russian and there was not an English speaker in sight. After wandering about for a while we ended up at a station and continued our enquiries.

For our troubles we got an earful of Russian – until a burly, boisterous man in his 50s rushed to our ‘aid’. He swore he spoke English fluently and promised to take us to our destination in his taxi for just 200 roubles. We were only too glad to find help – even if he had asked for 400 roubles we would have gladly paid up.

A little while later he arrives with an ancient Lada which looked like it was manufactured when Leonid Brezhnev was president. We all piled in – three of us squashed in the back and the tallest of us enjoying slightly more legroom in front.

As he took off he proudly announced to us that his was an ‘original Russian Lada.’ Every step of the way he chattered away in his ‘fluent English’ which on closer examination was more like 90% Russian, 5% Ukrainian and 3% English!

But we didn’t care because he delivered us safely to our destination. And the parting was cheerful as he posed proudly while we snapped pictures of his ‘original Russian Lada.’

  • Russia 2018: Brazil crash out of World Cup, as Belgium win 2-1

    Adeyinka Akintunde

Belgium have beaten Brazil 2-1 in Kazan to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup home, sending the five-time World champions home.

The Samba Boys  had conceded just one goal in their past four games in Russia but were behind early when Nacer Chadli’s corner struck Fernandinho’s arm and flew into the net, the 10th own goal of this World Cup.

Fernandinho’s Manchester City team-mate Kevin de Bruyne doubled Belgium’s lead with a sublime arrowed finish from 20 yards after Romelu Lukaku’s powerful run.

Brazil could find no answer until a 76th-minute headed reply from Renato Augusto, with star man Neymar virtually anonymous other than three poor attempts to win a penalty, although Referee Milorad Mazic perhaps should have pointed to the spot when Vincent Kompany dived in on Gabriel Jesus.

Neymar did finally come to life in injury time, forcing a brilliant save from Thibaut Courtois with a curling shot from outside the area, but it was not enough to sustain his team’s challenge.

Belgium will battle France, who had earlier on sent Uruguay home with a 2-0 victory, in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday 10th July, for a place in the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup

  • World Cup breaks stereotypes about Russia – Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that his country’s hosting of the soccer World Cup had helped debunk stereotypes about it.

Russia’s host nation status had been met with resistance by some in the West, who suggested the tournament could be unsafe and play into the hands of Putin.

The Russian president stands accused by Washington of conducting “malign activities” around the world.

But the month-long tournament, which ends on July 15, has so far been without major security incidents.

Concerns about racism and hooligan violence that were discussed in the run-up have not been borne out and most visiting fans have spoken of a positive experience.

At a meeting with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and former soccer stars at the Kremlin, Putin said the tournament and its coverage on social media had “helped break many stereotypes about Russia”.

“People have seen that Russia is a hospitable country, a friendly one for those who come here,” Putin said.

“I’m sure that an overwhelming majority of people who came will leave with the best feelings and memories of our country and will come again many times.”

Increasingly isolated on the global stage, Putin has used the tournament to send a defiant message to his opponents that Russia is succeeding despite Western efforts to hold it back.

Moscow’s pedestrian streets have been flooded with fans and locals who have celebrated the world’s most prestigious soccer tournament until the small hours of the morning.

“I was told people, police in the Red Square are smiling,” Infantino told Putin, laughing.

“When they are asked for some information, they are very friendly. This is great. This is exactly what Russia is. This is the new image that we have about Russia.”

The Russian team’s unexpected success at the World Cup has also added to the event’s appeal in the country.

After entering the tournament as the lowest-ranked side, Russia made it through to the knockout stage for the first time in post-Soviet history before upsetting Spain to make it to the quarter-finals.

Russia will face Croatia in the quarter-finals in Sochi on Saturday.

  • Les Blues at exit door?

A French aka Les Blues victory over Uruguay in the 1st Quarter final of the 2018 World Cup on Friday at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium in Russia is like a man trying to ride a bicycle up Olumo Rock, a tourist spot in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

On current rating, both have played 4 matches, Uruguay won all (beat Egypt and Saudi each by a lone goal; spanked hosts Russia 3-0 before Cavani’s brace decision Ronaldo’s Portugal 2-1 in R16); scored 7 goals, conceded 2 goals and has +5 goals difference. France won 3 matches ( beat Australia 2-1, Peru 1-0, played goalless with Denmark before the 4-3 thrashing of Argentina in R16) scored 7 goals like Uruguay but conceded 4 goals and has +3 goals difference.

The implication of this is that France with a record of poor marksmanship may need more than the elasticity of Mbappe and Pepe to score. Before the desperate encounter with Argentina where France scored a whopping 4 goals, they could only squeeze a goal per match, one against Australia but for the own goal by Behich in the 80’, the match would have ended in a draw and that lone goal against Peru scored by Pepe. France was not doing well.

Book makers are hinging their 47% win vote to France because of the surprise performance against Argentina. 23% feels Uruguay will win while 30% feels there will be a draw and then a penalty shoot-out. Uruguay W1 D4 L3 in their encounters. Suarez scored in the lone victory of June 2013. In their world cup encounters, Uruguay had W1 D2 winning in 1966 with draws in 2002 and 2010.

There is something Uruguay will not like to hear, they have never won five times in a row in same world cup tournament. Diego Maradona had said the new French wonder boy; Mbappe is like Claudio Canigga a notable Argentinian star who wrecked opposing teams at will. There is a sentimental angle to it.

France Forward, Griezmann is team mate with Uruguay defenders Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez at Athletico Madrid. They are so close that Griezmann keeps feeling he is from Uruguay. Godin is the godfather of Griezmann’s daughter. Suarez said Uruguay does not have time for sentiment and Friday will show it.
Cavani is PSG’s all-time top scorer and is ready to bang in goals for Uruguay. Cavani killed Portugal with his brace. Will he also wreck France? But the news from Russia is that Cavani may not be fit for the match because of a calf injury. Mbappe and Griezmann have scored two goals each for France. The match is 1500 hours WAT.

The second match at 1900 hours may not go to the wire at all. Belgium v Brazil. Surprised? Kazan Arena will see ‘wenn’ as we say in Warri language meaning they will see American Wonders. Brazil is playing quarter final in consecutive 7th time in world cup. They were beaten two times at this stage in 2006 by France and 2010 by Netherlands. It is important to tell you that European teams knocked out the five times world champions in 2006, 2010 and the last one in Brazil 2014.

Pundits are always saying Brazil is favorite to win in every tournament, even at this stage, 43% vote a Brazilian victory, 28% say it’s a Belgium win while 29% say it go to the wire and be decided via penalties. Both teams have met five times mostly friendlies. Belgium won in 1963 but Brazil won the three other encounters.

The only time the ever met in the world cup, was in 2002 Round of 16 and Brazil ran away with a 2 nil victory.

On current standing, both have played 4 matches each, Brazil has W3, D1 (drew 1-1 with Switzerland; defeated both Costa Rica and Serbia 2 nil each and also dazed Mexico 2-0 in R16), scoring 7 goals conceding 1 and having +6 Goals difference.

Belgium won all her 4 matches (walloped Panama 3-0; defeated hard fighting Tunisia 4-2; subdued almighty Three Lions 1-0 before edging Japan 3-2 in a pulsating R16), were the high goal scorers with 11 goals conceding 4 goals with +7 goals difference.

The implication of this is that Belgium may adopt wing play to break the Brazilian defense. Belgium manner of pumping in goals is dangerous for the Samba boys. The Belgians currently eyed to lift the cup will look unto Lukaku already runners up goal scorer with 4 goals and Felaini to use his height to score from corner kicks. Eden Hazard could create hazardous moments for Brazil.

Marcelo, the tireless horse is coming back for Brazil in the midfield. Refs have started neglecting the theatrics of Neymar in diving or his attitude when tackled.

He has to watch it. Will Brazil go out again at the quarters?

Saturday the other quarter finals shall be decided. Sweden v England at 1500 hours and hosts Russia v Croatia at 1900 hours both WAT. We shall periscope those two matches later.

  • Mining: Russia declare interest in re-investing in steel sector

Russia has declared its interest in re-investing in the Nigerian steel sector.

Acting Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Hon. Abubakar Bwari, said that Russia was part of the Soviet Union when Nigeria’s dream of steel independence began with the Ajaokuta plant even though it is yet to be realized.

He said that very soon, all the issues surrounding some of the country’s national assets will soon be resolved.

The Minister spoke in Abuja, while receiving the Russian Ambassador to Nigeria Mr. Alexey Shebarshin.

His words, “I am sure the Russians will not be surprised when we talk of mining in Nigeria because of our history and relationship, Russia was part of the Soviet Union that had a good economic relationship with Nigeria that led to the establishment of Ajaokuta Steel Plant, unfortunately the objectives of the plant is yet to be realized but I believe that with the renewed attention to the sector and this relationship we are about to start again, we believe the dreams are realizable.

“And very soon, Ajaokuta will come back to life again and I believe that we have the political will to do just that. Russia was also involved in the Aluminum Smelting Company in Ikot Abasi. The issues surrounding it are almost being resolved and I have received an update from BPE and i believe that we are on the part of getting it right again.

“All the issues surrounding some of these important national assets are almost resolved and I believe that our relationship with Russia will not stop with these one or two plants. The ambassador discussed a company that was in Nigeris from 1968-1983 that has shown interest in coming back to Nigeria to continue what they started in the area of geological survey and they want us to invite them very soon to come to Nigeria.

“The ambassador has said that his mission is to improve the country’s relationship with Russia particularly in the area of economic development. We will like to discuss further on this and if necessary go over there.”

The Ambassador in his speech said, “Before coming to Abuja, I met with Russian officials and private companies that want to cooperate with Nigeria on Solid Minerals, one of such company is a Russian mineral deposits prospecting company, JSC Zarubezhgeologia who has declared its interest in working with the solid minerals sector.”

  • Russian women under fire over romance with fans

With less than 16 days to the end of the World cup, Russian women have come under heavy criticism for allegedly flirting with foreign fans that have converged from far and near for the fiesta which ends on July 15.

The criticism which came from a well known columnist and Psychologist Platon Besedin, has generated a lot of reaction from the women with some insisting they have a right to get down with anybody they like.

The 32-year-old author railed against ‘the corruptibility of Russian young women’.

He wrote in Moskovsky Komsomolets: ‘Social networks are overloaded with videos where young and not quite young Russian women are behaving like overused prostitutes with low social responsibility” adding that it is clear that majority of them are doing so for money and others for a chance of getting married

‘Escort services have raised their prices. And some are ready to sleep with a foreigner for free. Just because he came from  [abroad].’

He claimed: ‘Russian women courting foreigners have abandoned concepts of shame and morality from their minds.

‘We have raised a generation of wh****, ready to open their legs as soon as they hear some foreign language sounds” the apparently worried columnist added

A petition posted by Cosmopolitan writer Snezhana Gribatskaya has however collected more than 6,500 backers demanding apologies from the newspaper ‘for insulting Russian women’

Some of women who reacted appear however to have provided a reason for the embracing their new passion while the world cup lasts.

One angry commenter, Yulia Skulkina, wrote: ‘I don’t understand why a woman can’t choose herself who she should have sex with…

‘Maybe Russian girls fall in love with foreigners because they behave like men, and not just hold a bottle of beer and retch during the championship?’Foreigners smile, court women, and let them feel themselves.’

Svetlana Zhukova wrote: ‘I am signing this because every woman has a right to be in charge of her own body.

One of the several pictures dished out alongside the report by Mailonline shows one Russian woman sandwiched between two men in the Nigerian jersey that was voted the most attractive in Russia 2018.

The fashionable jersey did not however turn out to be a good omen as the Super Eagles crashed out in the group stage after losing to Argentina and Croatia respectively while defeating Iceland 2-0 thanks to a double from Leicester City forward Ahmed musa.
