  • Putin-Trump summit to have limited impact on Russia-U.S. ties – Experts

Experts on Friday said little could be expected from the Putin-Trump meeting, as the two sides are unlikely to end the state of “systemic confrontation” in the near future.

Russia and the U.S. have confirmed their respective presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump will hold a full-fledged summit in Finland’s capital Helsinki on July 16, widely seen as a signal of the two countries’ willingness to start mending their worsening relations.

The long-delayed summit comes at a time when Russia-U.S. relations have deteriorated to a record level due to multiple disputes including alleged Russian involvement in the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign and divergence in Syria and Ukraine.

“We are now in a state of confrontation with the U. S.,” said Dmitry Suslov, deputy director of the Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics.

Suslov said that an unacceptable “pre-war situation” has developed in Russia-U.S. relations.

Both sides realize the need to keep things more manageable and predictable, which in turn inspired the idea of resuming bilateral dialogue in order to prevent further deterioration of relations.

The strengthening of Trump’s political position this year has made it possible for Trump to renew his friendship with Putin.

However, experts warned that one should not be over-optimistic about the results of the summit or short-term prospects of Russia-U.S. relations.

The main reason lies in the fact that the two sides have “fundamental disagreements” regarding the world order and their roles in it.

The U. S. is trying to restore its global dominance while Russia stands for a more equitable multipolar world.

“I think controlled confrontation is the maximum that can be achieved in Russian-U.S. relations in the next few years.

“As the U.S. will try to maintain its hegemony and primacy with all its might, there can be no question of any constructive relationship in Russian-U.S. relations,” Suslov said.

Experts said there are still ways in which the two countries could cooperate.

Potential approaches include restoring diplomatic missions, promoting cultural, social and scientific ties, as well as establishing a new joint stability mechanism in the world.

“Both Russia and the United States are in favor of a more flexible and modern approach to the issue of strategic stability … Here we can come to a common understanding,” Suslov said.

  • Russia 2018: Fresh corn as added delicacy for fans

The ongoing world cup in Russia no doubt has lived up to expectation so far. Though teams that are on the verge of crashing out and those who have already booked their exit, will tell you their expectations were not met.

Different strokes for different folks you will say.

The solution probably will be to go back to the drawing board and begin preparation for the next edition in 2022 in Qatar.

For the fans it is not just about supporting and cheering their fans to victory but also catching fun by visiting places of interest and perhaps having a taste of some local delicacies.

Talking about local foods it was interesting to receive a picture of a pot full of freshly boiled corn on sale at one of the match venues in Russia dispatched by our photographer, John Ebota.

On a good day a diet of corn with coconut or pear can make a complete meal and has been proved to have the capacity to sustain a hungry fellow.  The good thing about corn which is one of the stable foods in Nigeria and in Africa some nutritionists have confirmed is that you can never have too much and it can be made readily available as it matures within a short time.

Corn or maize takes from 60 to 100 days to reach harvest depending upon variety and the amount of heat available to it in the course of growing.  What this means is that it is possible to plant and harvest corn three times in a year, thus providing it all year round and providing source of income for farmers.

It is relatively cheap and affordable.  For lovers of this stable food, the mere sight of a pot of boiled corn will no doubt trigger off appetite and to realise that corn is also on the menu at the world cup in Russia, could be a major take home for some of the fans currently enjoying all the action a the event that has as usual seized the attention of the world and will retain it till July 15.

According to verywellfit.com, Corn is a good source of fiber. Diets high in fiber can help to lower cholesterol and regulate blood sugar and weight control.

In addition, corn is a good source of vitamin C, magnesium, B vitamins, and carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. Vitamin C is important in cell repair, boosting immunity and has anti-aging properties, whereas, B vitamins are important in energy metabolism. Magnesium is important for nerve conduction and muscle contraction. Carotenoids, lutein, and zeaxanthin have been shown to have antioxidative properties and are important in eye health.

I recall during the 2016 edition of the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) hosted by Rwanda, Rubavu was one of the venues and heading to Rubavu from Kigali provided a very interesting sight. Maize farms waiting for harvest could be seen and at the beaches corn was one of the delicacies. Though they choose to garnish their roast corn with some form of sauce which makes it extra delicious I must confess, corn is eaten in various ways by those who love it. Seeing the delicacy displayed in Russia is nostalgic don’t you agree?

  • No room for dull moment in Russia

We have so far seen 9 days of action in Russia with 28 matches played and 68 goals scored just before the last match of Saturday June 23rd. It has been a case of no dull moment.

If it is not a case of players scoring breath taking goals, it is a case of missing begging chances or worse still missing penalty.

You may choose to call it a kaleidoscope of events and you will be right. The camera of course is not only on the pitch which is the focal point of the battle of supremacy but also the fans that have come from far and wide to make the event unique.  Here are some of the eye catching actions:

  • Obaseki hails Super Eagles’ triumph over Iceland

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has praised the Super Eagles for their 2-0 victory over Iceland, on Friday evening in the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia.

Obaseki, who lauded the brilliant performance of the attack led by Ahmed Musa, said the team restored the hope of Nigerians in the campaign for a place of pride in the soccer mundial.

“The Super Eagles’ exceptional performance against Iceland shows the true Nigerian spirit, that when we are committed to a task, we would give it our all, to succeed,” the Governor said.

He urged members of the team not to rest on their oars as they prepare for the last group game against Argentina on Tuesday, June 26, adding, “All that is required of the players is to keep their eyes on the trophy and approach the game with Argentina with a high sense of commitment to national duty.”

Obaseki reiterated that Nigerians have the team in their prayers and hopeful that the team will do the country proud by qualifying for the next round of 16 and go even further to claim the highly prized trophy.

“The current Super Eagles team is made up of young and talented players who have distinguished themselves in their various teams, home and abroad. With their performance against Iceland, they have shown determination to excel in Russia,” he added.

The Super Eagles are tipped to qualify for the next round of 16 in the month-long soccer event, after their victory over Iceland which earned the team three points behind Croatia with six points. Argentina and Iceland are below on the table with one point each.

  • Ekweremadu hails Super Eagles on victory over Iceland

Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, on Friday congratulated the Super Eagles of Nigeria on their victory over Iceland in their second group game at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Ekweremadu in a statement by his media aide, Uche Anichukwu, said the Eagles manifested the true Nigerian spirit, noting, however, that they should not relent, but bring out the best in them in order to book a place in the round of 16.

“I congratulate the Super Eagles on this resounding victory. I am happy that they overcame their demoralizing loss to Croatia and a disappointing first half against Iceland to give Nigerians and Africans something to cheer.

“However, we are obviously not in the round of 16 yet. The Super Eagles should rather see this superlative win as a motivation to fly over a wounded and demystified Argentine team. The Super Eagles can do it.  They understand the Argentine team, having confronted them in previous World Cup events and also beating them in the friendly ahead of the mundial”, Ekweremadu said.

He urged Nigerians to continue to support and pray for the team.

  • World Cup attendances pass one million mark – FIFA

More than one million fans have attended games at the World Cup, FIFA said in a statement on Thursday after Denmark’s 1-1 draw with Australia, the 21st match of the tournament in Russia.

“To date, more than 2.6 million tickets have been allocated to football fans all around the world, with ticket sales ongoing until July 15.

“On average, World Cup stadium occupancy is at 97 per cent and more than 70,000 tickets have been resold,” added the statement.

The only glaring case of large numbers of empty seats was Uruguay’s 1-0 win over Egypt in Yekaterinburg, where 6,000 tickets which had been allocated were left unused.

FIFA said that was due to “no shows” from constituent groups which include sponsors, member associations and supporters.

  • Nigerians in Russia task Eagles to beat Iceland

Nigerians in St. Petersburg have urged the Super Eagles to go all out for outright victory against Iceland in their second group D encounter on Friday at Volgograd.

The Super Eagles had earlier suffered a 2 – 0 painful defeat in the hands of Vatreni of Croatia in their first match in Group D on Saturday at Kaliningrad stadium.

The Nigerians told the News Agency of Nigeria, on Thursday, that the only way to redeem the team’s pre-tournament rating was for the Coach Garnet Rohr tutored side to come out strong against their opponents.

Celestine Okonkwo, a Nigerian who is in Russia to witness the Mundial said that for Nigeria to remain in contention, the Eagles must up their game and beat Iceland outrightly.

“Before the competition, a lot of people rated the team to do well, but since they fail to beat Croatia in the first game the only option now is to go all out for victory against Iceland.

“It will not be too good for the Eagles to crash out of the competition in the first round of the tournament. It is better for the players and the coaching crew to work out a winning formula against their next opponents,’’ he said.

Mohammed Abdullaih, another Nigerian, told NAN that the match against Iceland must be won by Super Eagles to redeem not only Nigeria’s image but also that of Africa.

“After the exit of Egypt and Morocco from the competition, Nigeria must join Senegal to redeem the continent’s image by winning the match against Iceland tomorrow,’’ he said.

According to him, the team needs to be more aggressive in their opponent’s goal area unlike what happened against Croatia in their first game to achieve their mission.

Festus Ennahirre, another Nigerian who spoke to NAN, said that the only saving grace for the Eagles would be for the team to win the game against Iceland.

“It will not only keep them in the competition but also enhance the team’s image and rating.

“Prior to the competition, a lot of Nigerians at home and abroad expected much from the team, but after the scandalous 0-2 loss to Croatia they appeared disappointed.

“So the only thing left now is for them to win,’’ the soccer fan said.

He stressed that anything short of total victory against Iceland would not be acceptable to Nigerians and the followers of the team.

NAN investigation in the team’s camp revealed that the technical crew led by Coach Rohr have been working hard to ensure that the Eagles come out victorious on Friday.

  • Why Russia should reckon with Nigeria – Saraki

    …Seeks stronger security, economic cooperation

Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Wednesday urged the Russian Government to reckon with Nigeria as the central area of focus in Africa.

Saraki said that the Russian Government should take a more serious view of its longstanding ties with Nigeria to expand its interests.

He insisted that countries desirous of expanding their interests in Africa must necessarily see Nigeria, the powerhouse in the region, as the gateway to the continent.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Senate President, Sanni Onogu, said that Saraki made the call when he addressed the Upper Chamber of the Russian Parliament known as the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, in Moscow.

It described the address as “historic” Saraki being the first head of the Nigerian legislature to perform such a function in Russia.

It said that Saraki also called for a stronger security, economic and cultural cooperation between Nigeria and Russia.

It said that Saraki thanked the Chairperson of the Federation Council, Ms. Valentina Matviyenko for the invitation to visit the Russian Parliament.

Saraki it said expressed confidence that the event would mark a new phase of inter-parliamentary cooperation between the two nations, as well as a springboard for renewed vigour in Nigeria-Russia relations in general.

It said that Saraki insisted that since aid alone cannot mitigate the enormous socio-economic challenges confronting the country, it is imperative for both countries to engage in partnerships that would “open the door to new investments and other opportunities.”

Saraki said: “Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa is unassailable. An improved relationship between us would be a definitive pathway to a stronger relationship with the whole of Africa.

“Let us, therefore, pledge to revitalise the ties between our two countries. It is important, at this point, to stress that the relationship we seek is one based on partnership.

“We recognize that aid alone will no longer sufficiently tackle the challenges ahead. Partnership, on the other hand, will open the door to new investments and other opportunities.

“It is for this reason that we in Nigeria are putting a lot of effort into ensuring that we build a strong foundation for the future and one of the ways we are doing that is by deepening links with other parliaments such as yourselves, because legislation is a necessary key to unlocking potentials in people, and delivering better prospects for citizens.

“I therefore come to you today as an economic ambassador of Africa’s largest economy. Our economy is increasingly stable and offers immense potential for investment.

“Our people are self-motivated, ambitious and seeking new opportunities and avenues to make their mark in the dynamic world of today. And I say to you: let us work together to explore new and exciting areas of cooperation and economic opportunities that will be mutually beneficial to our peoples.

“For us, there are compelling arguments for looking to Russia. I say this for the obvious reason that our two countries share certain, striking similarities,” he said.

Saraki noted that in the emerging global order, world powers are looking to Africa because “Africa is not merely rising; Africa is here. There is a world of opportunities on the continent.”

According to him, the 54 nations of Africa represent a huge geographical bloc with enormous potential for investment and strategic partnerships that would benefit only those that venture.

“Our position, therefore, is simple: those who are serious about expanding their interests in Africa must necessarily see Nigeria – the powerhouse in the region – as the gateway to the continent,” he said.

He further called on the Russian Government to reckon with Nigeria as the central area of focus in Africa, by taking a more serious view of its longstanding ties with the country.

“I make this point because we are not seeing enough of that at the present time. There is a vacuum currently, and the reality is that no other country can take your place.

“As a fellow oil producing nation, we do believe that Russia has a keen insight on some of the challenges we face in Nigeria with regard to the economy, as well as our drive towards diversification.

“As your economy, like ours, recovers from recession, we say that part of the consolidation process must be a stronger focus on Africa, and Nigeria in particular.

“As leaders of our nations’ parliaments, therefore, we must think of not just today but well into the future, to pursue and implement initiatives that release the potentials of our peoples in their desire for economic development.

“With Russia and Nigeria projected to be the biggest economies in Europe and Africa respectively in just three decades from now, it would be a travesty if we did not strive to strengthen cooperation and partnership to reap the gains in terms of GDP growth.

“As the country with the biggest gas reserves on earth, Russia should be a leading player in the African oil and gas sector. Stronger collaboration for gas development would help Nigeria solve acute problems of power generation as well as provide for other local uses.

“The time is ripe to redefine the relationship between our two countries, based on partnership, to improve the state of infrastructural and economic development, for the good of our people,” he said.

He said that Nigeria and Russia need to collaborate more to develop common strategies for tackling the problem of terrorism and human trafficking as their contribution sustainable peace in the larger world.

“Terrorism is a global threat. What affects one, affects all; and we look to Russia to join us in building stronger collaboration for the fight against this common enemy. Terrorism, most significantly in the shape of the Boko Haram sect, has continued to pose a serious challenge to the internal security of Nigeria.

“When, at the height of the crisis, we were having difficulty obtaining international support, Russia memorably saved the day by supplying military equipment and assisting us with the training of personnel.

“We are grateful that you did not abandon us in our hour of need. While Boko Haram is largely decimated now, the threat remains, and new terrorism challenges are arising; one of these being the Herdsmen-Farmers’ crisis that constitutes a clear and present threat to our national security.

“We hope for your continued cooperation and partnership towards combating the threat; and with your support, I have no doubt that Nigeria will prevail,” he said.
