Football enthusiasts hail Eagles’ good start

Football enthusiasts on Tuesday hailed the Super Eagles for the team’s good start to their campaign in the ongoing West African Football Union (WAFU) Cup of Nations in Ghana.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Eagles B team got their WAFU Cup campaign underway on a positive note with a 2-0 victory over their Sierra Leoneans counterparts on Monday night.

Late goals from Osas Okoro and Peter Eneji were the tonic needed by the Salisu Yusuf tutored lads to break the resistance of the impressive Lone Stars at the Cape Coast Stadium.

With the win, Nigeria progressed to the Group A, which also comprises hosts Ghana, Mali and Guinea.

A cross section of football enthusiasts who spoke to NAN noted that it was a hard fight won by the Ikechukwu Ezenwa side, adding that the team must sustain the momentum and team spirit.

Garba Lawal, an ex-international said teamwork was germane to the Eagles’ victory against a resilient Sierra Leonian side.

“It was a well-coordinated effort by the team from the goalkeeping, defence, midfield to the attacking departments.

“I must particular commend Ezenwa for putting up a ‘man-of-the-match’ performance.

“He was mountainous in goal and proved why he is ready for bigger tasks for the Super Eagles in future.

“I hope the boys can continue playing like this and if they do, they will definitely be a handful for any other team in the tournament,” he said.

Bala Mohammed, Technical Adviser of Niger Tornadoes FC said Rabiu Ali’s performance, among others, impressed him the most.

“Ali is a sure stopper when he gets his bearing in games.

“He was at the heart of the Eagles’ positive moves and linked up well with his wicked passes, just the way he does for Kano Pillars.

“Also, Osas Okoro and Chima Akas were always venturing forward and looking to provide support to the attackers.

“They provided width to the tactical system of the Super Eagles and weren’t found wanting.

“Okoro’s free kick was a typical “Television Goal” and he started the move that resulted in the second goal of the game.

“With this kind of performance, I think the boys will go very far in the tournament,” he said.

Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu of MFM FC praised Coach Salisu Yusuf for his tactical and technical prowess which saw the game turn on its head.

He explained that the positive substitutions made by the coach was unprecedented, noting that a difficult game was always won from the bench.

“The trio of Peter Eneji, Ubong Friday and Gabriel Okechukwu read a script dished out by Yusuf Salisu and acted it perfectly.

“The three attackers were menacing when they were thrown into the fray and that was the antidote needed to deal with such games.

“Kudos to the team for a hard-fought victory,” he said.

Dele Johnson, Coach of Henfield FC, Abuja said he was impressed by team’s style of play, adding that they made football look beautiful to watch.

“The team played a fluid and interesting game and the goal by Peter Eneji was a sweeping team move. Tic tac, sexy football, one touch game and whoops it landed at the back of the net.

“It was a one time finish from Eneji, who curled a low shot beyond the stranded keeper.

“The Plateau United man reminded fans of the predatory abilities of the late Rashidi Yekini with his goal poacher’s effort.

“Keep it up guys and keep flying the country’s flag high,” he advised.

SALISU YUSUF:No NPFL stars for Algeria game

Super Eagles Chief coach, Salisu Yusuf has asserted that it would be difficult for any Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) player to make the 23-man list for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Algeria.

Yusuf revealed that with the NPFL season on break,  the senior national team coaches cannot guarantee the fitness level of the local league players and so they would be excused from the November 12 cracker against the Desert Foxes at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

“I don’t think any home based player will make the list for the Algeria game,” Yusuf told Goal.

“It is a crucial game for us and we do not want to toy with it. The league season is on break and the players have gone on break to their respective families.

“Their slots would be used to add more new players who have been scouted but are yet to be invited to be watched at close range. We want to assure Nigerians that the players that will be invited for the tie with Algeria will be players who will do the nation proud.”

Salisu Yusuf: NPFL based players to get Super Eagles invitation but…

Any NPFL player hoping to get the consideration of national team selectors, especially in the Super Eagles will need to put in extra work and consistency in their performance and focus without distractions from their clubs, according to Chief Coach , Salisu Yusuf.

Recently, Godwin Obaje, Chisom Egbuchulam and Ikechukwu Ezenwa were invited for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zambia. Though he admitted the door is always open to NPFL players, Yusuf believes the foreign based players will have an edge because they are mostly readily fit for high profile matches.

Speaking with footballlive.ng, Yusuf said club distractions often hindered training programmes with home based players; recalling the NPFL All-Stars Carranza World Tour earlier in the year and the logistic challenges with clubs.

Blame Eagles’ stars for AFCON failure – Yusuf

Super Eagles coach, Salisu Yusuf, has said the country’s stars were to blame for Nigeria’s failure to qualify for next year’s African Nations Cup (AFCON) in Gabon.

However, the coach believes the players will push themselves more to qualify Nigeria for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“The players did not give what they were supposed to give and so we failed to qualify again for the AFCON,” Yusuf told africanFootball.com.

“The players fought like home-based players in the friendly against Mali and I believe that with better self-motivation, they will be at the World Cup.

“They are already producing high performances at their various European clubs and we expect them to give more to be at the World Cup.”

He charged the country’s Europe-based stars to adapt to whatever conditions they will come across in their bid to qualify for a sixth World Cup.

The pitch at Ndola, Zambia, where the Super Eagles will begin its 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign is presently not in top shape.

But Yusuf believes that should not be a drawback.

“We must adapt to the African environment. With players with strong character, a bad pitch won’t make any difference after about 15 minutes, when you would have familiarize yourself with it,” he added.

Salisu Yusuf yet to sign Eagles deal

Salisu Yusuf is still to sign a contract as Super Eagles chief coach even after top officials ordered him to be in Abuja this week to do so.

An official revealed: “Salisu still has not signed a contract even after he was ordered to come into Abuja and do so.

“The official in charge of the contract was again out of the country and so the coach has had to return to Kano.

“He will now possibly sign his contract before the World Cup qualifier in Zambia next month.”

This will be the second time the former Enyimba and Kano Pillars coach has failed to sign a new contract as scheduled.

Head coach Gernot Rohr has since signed his own contract, which pays him $47,000 a month to be funded by a mystery sponsor.

No Eagles contract for Salisu Yusuf

Nigeria chief coach, Salisu Yusuf has not secured a contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) several weeks after Gernot Rohr sealed his own deal.

Before his appointment as the country’s chief coach, the 54-year-old Yusuf was assistant coach and then caretaker coach of the national team.

He was on a salary of N2 million  a month before his latest appointment.

An NFF official disclosed: “Salisu Yusuf was to have discussed and agreed on his own contract after he led the NPFL All-Stars on a playing tour of Spain recently, but all the top officials who would have attended to him were overseas on official assignments.

“He does not know what is on the table for him as no one has discussed the contract with him.

“It is now hoped he will seal his own contract at least before the AFCON qualifier against Tanzania in Uyo next month.”

The contracts of both coaches as well as some other national team coaches will be bankrolled by an oil company believed to be owned by Ifeanyi Ubah, proprietor of Nigeria premier league side, FC IfeanyiUbah.

Baraje to NFF: Allow Yusuf to lead Super Eagles

Plateau United head coach, Zachary Baraje, has said it is absurd that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is thinking of hiring a foreign manager for the Super Eagles despite the federation’s investment on training programme for the team caretaker boss, Salisu Yusuf and other Nigerian coaches.

Baraje told Goal that the cash, energy and the time expended on trip to England for a training programme would amount to a waste if the NFF eventually appoints a foreigner as Eagles’ coach.

“I want to state my own view regarding the craze for a foreign coach,” Baraje told Goal.

“I want to ask a question, what has happened to the training received by some coaches taken abroad by the NFF some time ago last year? Will the training they had just go down the drain like that?

“I am not in support of bringing a foreign coach to lead the Eagles when we have coaches that are qualified and have gone through the necessary training to be equipped for the challenge of coaching the senior national team.

“Salisu Yusuf was one of the coaches sent to the United Kingdom not too long ago for a training course and he has worked with past Super Eagles coaches as assistant coach and should be given the chance to lead the team now.

“We are still struggling to pay the salaries of national team coaches including the ones that are dead and how are we going to offset the salaries of a foreign coach?”

The NFF had said over 20 coaches including Peter Ijeh and Salisu Yusuf applied for the Super Eagles job with applications expected to close on Wednesday.

Nigeria caretaker coach, Salisu Yusuf, has submitted his application to head the Super Eagles coaching crew in full capacity.

The technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had requested all interested coaches to apply for the post vacated by Sunday Oliseh in February, africanFootball.com reports.

Yusuf had assisted the late Stephen Keshi, Sunday Oliseh and Samson Siasia in the Super Eagles’ bench in the last one year.

He led the team two  international friendlies against Mali and Luxembourg in May.

  • Yusuf not ripe to lead Eagles – West

Yusuf not ripe to lead Eagles – West

Former Super Eagles defender, Taribo West, has backed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in its quest to hire a foreign coach for the Super Eagles, insisting that caretaker manager, Salisu Yusuf, is not ripe enough to lead the team.

There have been calls for the former Kano Pillars coach to be appointed substantive Super Eagles manager based on his recent exploit with the team in the two friendlies against Mali and Luxembourg.

However, the ex- Inter Milan defender believes people clamouring for Yusuf retention are doing so for selfish reasons.

West said the tight nature of Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying group makes it imperative for NFF to get a foreign coach for the Super Eagles.

” I have watched with keen interest the debate on if Salisu Yusuf should be retained or not and my take is that he is not ripe enough to handle the Super Eagles in competitive games especially at this time when we are under pressure for missing two consecutive Africa Cup of Nations,” West told Owngoalnigeria.com

” The last two editions of the Cup of Nations we failed to qualify for was down to marginal technical error on the part of our coaches against superior coaches of our opponents. Therefore we can’t afford to make such mistake again.

“This is the World Cup qualifiers and with all due respect if we want to qualify from a group that has Cameroun, Algeria and Zambia we need a better coach than Salisu Yusuf.”
