He made this known at a graduation held for 5,309 students who graduated from the 2024/2025 session of its skills acquisition programmes under the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty (WAPA).

He said the state’s skills acquisition programmes were initiated to support young entrepreneurs with the needed skills and tools to start their businesses.

Sanwo-Olu identified entrepreneurship as one of the major means to tackle and alleviate poverty in the society.

The students were trained in diverse skills such as vulcanising, welding and aluminium fabrication.

Others are carpentry, photography, barbing, catering, hairdressing and bead and hat making,  gele tying and makeup artistry, among others.

They also received start-up tools and certificates.

Sanwo-Olu seeks legal backing for sustainable HIV funding

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on state legislatures across the country to prioritise the passage and implementation of laws that guarantee sustained financing for the national HIV response.

He also urged lawmakers to support legislation that eliminates stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV and promotes inclusive, equitable access to services.

Sanwo-Olu made the call at the closing ceremony of the 7th National Council on AIDS (NACA), held in Lagos on Thursday.

The event, themed “Advancing National HIV Sustainability Agenda in the Changing Global Policy on Aid,” focused on the need to reposition Nigeria’s HIV response amid shrinking international donor support.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said the time had come for Nigeria to fully take ownership of its HIV programmes and shift away from a donor-dependent model to a more resilient and homegrown solution.

“We must shift from dependency to sustainability, from fragmented responses to coordinated systems, and from ad hoc programming to long-term strategic planning,” he said.

According to him, Lagos State is already taking the lead in this regard through initiatives such as the Lagos State HIV Trust Fund, the ongoing reform of the HIV Anti-Stigma Law, and the integration of HIV services into broader health systems.

“These efforts reflect our unwavering commitment to human dignity, inclusion, and justice. Sustainability is not just about funding; it is about building a system that protects our people today and in the future,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu further urged stakeholders to ensure that the resolutions reached at the NCA are translated into concrete policies and actions that impact lives across communities.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Control, Hon. Amobi Ogah, underscored the urgency of increasing domestic funding for the national HIV response.

Ogah disclosed that Nigeria would need an estimated $8 billion annually to sustain its HIV interventions and ensure access to quality care for people living with the virus.

“The Nigerian government must take the lead by increasing its budgetary allocation to the HIV sector,” Ogah said, assuring that the National Assembly would continue to provide legislative backing and oversight to support the fight against the disease.

The Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Dr. Temitope Ilori, reiterated the agency’s commitment to aligning both national and sub-national HIV response strategies to achieve long-term sustainability.

Ilori said the implementation of the National HIV, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Sustainability Plan was critical to ensuring that no Nigerian is left behind in accessing comprehensive healthcare services.

“We are at a defining moment. We must ensure that our plans are not just on paper but are translated into action, especially at the community level,” she stated.

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, in his remarks, stressed the importance of domestic resource mobilisation and institutionalising HIV funding at all levels of government.

He explained that sustainability went beyond financial investment, noting that stronger leadership, adaptive health systems, innovation, and accountability must drive the HIV response going forward.

“As a state, we are committed to reducing mother-to-child transmission, scaling up treatment, and strengthening prevention efforts,” Abayomi said.

He added, “HIV care must become cheaper, more accessible, and fully integrated into routine healthcare services. We must also begin to treat HIV as a critical public health security priority.”

The 7th National Council on AIDS, convened by NACA in partnership with key stakeholders, brought together policymakers, development partners, civil society actors, and representatives from various states to deliberate on strategies to sustain Nigeria’s HIV response in a rapidly changing global funding landscape.

Magodo residents seek Sanwo-Olu’s intervention over environmental degradation, others

Magodo Residents Association(MRA) have urged Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to save the estate from a looming infrastructural and environmental degradation.

In a statement yesterday, Chairman of the MRA, Mr. Niyi  Odusi, appealed to the governor to stop the development of buildings in a land-locked location originally classified as a gorge in the masterplan of Magodo GRA Phase 2, Shangisha, Lagos.

Odusi said the gorge serves as a natural water collection point and is supported by vegetation and sand mass that holds the elevated part of the location, which prevents the structures on the low lands from being submerged by flow of rain water.

The residents urged Sanwo-Olu to prevail upon a property developer allegedly  in connivance with the state’s Ministry of Physical Planning  bent on distorting the natural setting and peace of the environment at the expense of existing properly situated properties and infrastructural conveniences.

“Our concern is that developers aided by top officials of Lagos State Physical Planning have decided on building in the gorge and are bent on distorting the natural setting and peace of our environment at the expense of existing properly situated properties, infrastructural conveniences, and thereby cause ecological distortions in an otherwise natural and stable space.

“In our letter of 24th April 2025, we had intimated the Ministry of Physical Planning and other relevant departments and agencies of Lagos state to this development. We expected that the relevant government agencies and departments would rise to the occasion to prevent a looming environmental disaster being perpetrated by this developer. Our suspicion is that there may be individuals within these agencies that are in cahoots with this developer,” Odusi said.

The residents added that  distorting the gorge, which hitherto offered natural ecological balance, would constitute avoidable danger to the environment and to precious lives and properties.

Among many demands, they urged the state government to stop activities in the gorge at the Green Valley Zone of the estate; order the developer to reinstate the natural setting of the location and indemnify the existing property owners and residents against actions that may affect their safety, security, and quality of life.

•Lagos governor hosts POWA’s first convention

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA) as the backbone of the country’s security, whose support to police families have stabilised officers in the discharge of their duties.

He said this at the POWA National convention in Lagos for the first time. He commended the association for its impact on police families and communities across Nigeria. “You are not just women, not just wives and mothers; you are powerful, elegant, and the backbone of our national security,” he said.

The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mrs. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, commended the association, for its welfare and empowerment initiatives, including the recent training of over 1,000 women; expanding microfinance programmes, and launching health and entrepreneurship projects.

He noted that such interventions not only uplift families within police barracks but also contribute to national unity, peace, and socio-economic stability.

Sanwo-Olu said the group’s efforts deserve national recognition, particularly at a time when security challenges require holistic, community-based responses.

“The theme of this conference, Unlocking POWA Potential and Transformational Leadership, is timely and thought-provoking,” Sanwo-Olu noted, urging the association to continue fostering collaboration with government institutions, civil society, and community stakeholders to ensure sustainability and wider impact.

Highlighting the often-overlooked role of families in national security, Sanwo-Olu said the emotional and logistical support provided by POWA members enables officers to serve with confidence and dedication. “There is no man, no policeman, no Commissioner, no Inspector-General without you. You make them whole,” he stated.

The governor urged participants at the conference to sustain the spirit of unity, resilience, and innovation that has defined POWA over the decades, emphasising that the strength of the association lies in its resolve to build stronger families and safer communities.

According to Sanwo-Olu, Lagos would continue to partner POWA, especially in areas such as women empowerment, youth development and public safety.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, said POWA was a vital but often unsung strategic pillar that supports the morale and emotional strength of officers.

Represented by the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Zone 2, Adegoke Fayoade, Egbetokun praised the association for evolving from a welfare-based group to a dynamic body driving transformational leadership, family stability, youth mentorship and economic empowerment across police communities.

“Over the decades, POWA has moved beyond hospital visits and charity work to implement skill acquisition programmes, educational support, and health initiatives-making it a beacon of resilience and progress in the security ecosystem,” he said.

IGP Egbetokun highlighted three key strategic roles of POWA: as a support pillar during crises, a socio-economic influencer through cooperatives and training centres, and a bridge between the police institution and civil society.

He said POWA’s outreach efforts help improve public perception of the police, foster trust, and promote community development.

POWA President, Dr. Elizabeth Egbetokun, re-echoed the association’s renewed commitment to growth, leadership and community development.

She described the convention as a platform that unites wives of serving and fallen police officers to reflect, grow, and explore opportunities for empowerment especially for  widows, orphans, and vulnerable members of the police community.

Egbetokun said the theme of the conference was chosen to inspire members to rise to their highest capabilities, explaining that transformational leadership is rooted in shared vision, innovation, trust, and transparency.

Highlighting the association’s achievements under her leadership, Dr. Egbetokun noted that POWA has conducted empowerment programmes across several states.

Over 3,000 women, widows, orphans, and physically challenged persons have benefited from these initiatives. Items distributed include sewing machines, ovens, grinding machines, wheelchairs, and starter packs. These efforts, she said, align with her administration’s three-point agenda: Education for Development, Quality Health Care Delivery, and Better Life for All.

“Let this convention be a spark for transformation as we strive together to build a stronger, more empowered POWA,” she added.

Also at the event were Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu; representative of the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hazmat; Commissioner of Police (CP) Olohundare Jimoh; Commander 9 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Olawale Oyewole, Commander Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, Commodore Paul Nimmyel and other dignatories.
