Lagos to host Africa’s first E1 Electric Boat Race – Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State has officially been announced as the first African city to host the E1 Racing Championship, a global electric boat racing series, scheduled to hold on October 4th and 5th, 2025.

The announcement came after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s recent visit to Monaco over the weekend, where he attended the latest stage of the championship.

Reflecting on the experience, Sanwo-Olu highlighted it as a powerful reminder of how bold innovation and forward-thinking ideas can shape the future of clean energy and sustainable transportation.

The governor expressed pride in Lagos clinching the hosting rights, stating that the event puts the city at the centre of global clean energy conversations.

He noted that Lagos’ inclusion is proof that the city is ready for sustainable innovation and marine technology on a global scale.

“This is an opportunity to show the world what makes Lagos special — our culture, our energy, and our people,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He explained that the October event is a chance for Lagos to welcome global visitors, share its stories, and highlight its growing tourism and tech sectors.

Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the crucial support of Afreximbank, which is partnering with Team Drogba and backing Lagos’ vision.

He said the bank’s role is not only financial but a reflection of confidence in the state’s potential to lead in innovation.

He explained that the initiative aligns with the state’s sustainability goals and efforts to build a greener future.

“The world will see Lagos not just as a megacity, but as a pioneer in environmental responsibility and marine innovation,” he said.

The E1 Championship showcases electric-powered RaceBird boats and seeks to inspire a movement toward cleaner oceans and sustainable transportation.

  • Sanwo-Olu vows prosecution of LASTMA attackers as Lagos celebrates 25 years of traffic reform

Sanwo-Olu vows prosecution of LASTMA attackers as Lagos celebrates 25 years of traffic reform

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the protection of officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), declaring that anyone who assaults traffic officials will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

The governor issued the warning during the agency’s 25th anniversary and second Lagos Traffic Summit, held on July 15 at an event that doubled as a high-level policy forum on the future of mobility in the state. The message was delivered on his behalf by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.

“Let’s put it on record that anyone who attacks our officers will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Sanwo-Olu said, addressing a hall filled with stakeholders from across the transportation and public safety sectors. “Without LASTMA, all of us can’t function. That is the truth. And as such, we must respect them while they do their job.”

The solemnity of the governor’s message was reinforced with a minute’s silence in honour of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Their names were read out as a mark of remembrance, while the governor pledged continued support for their families and assured current officers of the government’s backing.

Highlighting the summit’s theme, “Enhancing Traffic Efficiency and Safety on Lagos Roads: Challenges, Opportunities and Innovations,” Sanwo-Olu praised LASTMA’s technological transformation. From real-time surveillance to automated number-plate recognition and plans for drone-based traffic monitoring, he described the agency as “a model institution, not just in Nigeria but across West Africa.”

The governor also unveiled a forward-looking 20-year strategic traffic management blueprint, which includes smarter urban mobility systems, expanded intermodal transport infrastructure, and embedded artificial intelligence for predictive traffic analysis, and making Lagos the human capital center of the world in the transport sector by enhancing the innovative competitiveness of the Lagos State University School of Transportation.

Opening the session, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, set the tone for the summit, describing the occasion as ‘a solemn recognition of a quarter-of-a-century-long journey that began with a powerful idea: that Lagos should take control of its traffic density.’”

Giwa detailed how LASTMA, established in July 2001, evolved from a modest team of less than 500 with rudimentary tools to a 4,000-strong workforce managing over 2 million daily vehicle movements across the state’s 9,100-kilometre road network. “Our officers have braved the sun, storms, and strenuous streets, not only to clear bottlenecks but also to save lives during accidents, coordinate disaster response, and facilitate seamless movement of goods and services,” he said.

Giwa further noted the enormous economic implications of traffic mismanagement. With Lagos holding 30% of Nigeria’s vehicular population, and commuters losing four to six hours daily to congestion, the state suffers an estimated N1 trillion in annual productivity losses. “These are no longer just figures. They are about lives, mental health, and economic competitiveness,” he said.

Giwa called for deeper institutional accountability. “Enforcement agencies must act with fairness. We must earn public trust, not just demand compliance,” he said, adding that with over 4,000 LASTMA officers, the agency helps Lagos recover an estimated N400 billion in productivity value annually.

International transport systems expert and founder of Infotran, Mr. Shridhar Uttara, also addressed the summit, providing a global perspective on traffic technology. Drawing on over 15 years of collaboration with Lagos transport agencies, Mr. Uttara presented a roadmap for integrating AI, adaptive signal systems, and unified transport platforms to enhance mobility and reduce congestion.

Uttara proposed body cameras for LASTMA officials to deter violence and ensure transparency, while also urging Lagos to adopt Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platforms that unify ferry, road, and rail transport under a single digital infrastructure. “You cannot build a 21st-century city on 20th-century transportation systems,” he warned.

‘Resounding victory’ belongs to Lagosians, says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday said he received the victory news of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Saturday council poll with joy and gratitude.

The governor described the feat as a resounding victory.

He congratulated “the APC, and to our party leaders, stakeholders, and loyal members on this overwhelming electoral success.”

According to him, the outcome is a clear affirmation of the trust and confidence that Lagosians have in the APC’s vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to inclusive development at the grassroots.

He said: “Indeed, this victory belongs to the people of Lagos. It reflects your belief in our shared goals and your support for continuity, progress, and people-centered governance.

“To our newly elected Chairmen and Councillors, I offer my warmest congratulations. But more importantly, I offer you a reminder: this victory is not an end, but a means to an end—that end being selfless, responsive, and accountable service to the people. Your responsibility is to deliver good governance, uplift communities, and promote the welfare of every resident—regardless of political affiliation.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu enjoined them to be magnanimous in victory, reach across all divides, and embrace the spirit of humility, inclusiveness, and sportsmanship.

Leadership, he said, is a sacred trust, and “you have been chosen not just to lead your supporters, but to serve your entire community with equity, transparency, and compassion.”

The governor commended the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for conducting a peaceful and credible election.

He hailed the security agencies for ensuring law and order throughout the electoral process.

“Above all, I extend my sincere appreciation to the people of Lagos for exercising their civic responsibility peacefully and for reinforcing the ideals of democracy with dignity and maturity. As the new local government administrations prepare to assume office, I reaffirm my unwavering commitment to working closely with them to drive meaningful development to all corners of our state. Sanwo-Olu commissions 10 new ambulance points to boost emergency healthcare in Lagos

The Lagos State Government has commissioned 10 new ambulance points across the state as part of efforts to strengthen emergency medical services.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, announced the development during a commissioning ceremony held Saturday at the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) Point in Agege.

The newly established points are located in Agege, Agbowa, Masha (Surulere), Badagry, Mile 2, Epe, Shomolu, Igando, Iba, and Ibeju-Lekki.

Dr. Ogunyemi said the initiative aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda and is aimed at reducing emergency response times, particularly in underserved areas.

“These new ambulance points are more than buildings—they are symbols of hope and progress in saving lives,” she noted.

The event was attended by top officials including the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, and the contractor, Mr. Sulaiman Hammed of Hamibra Integrated Nigeria Ltd.

Dr. Ogunyemi commended Mr. Hammed for exceeding expectations in delivering quality infrastructure and recognized Mr. Moshood Akintayo, a former LASAMBUS patient, who voluntarily beautified the Agege ambulance point in gratitude for life-saving care he received.

Dr. Ogboye described the project as “a major leap forward” in enhancing Lagos State’s emergency healthcare system.

“This is not just about cutting ribbons. It’s about building a system that works for the people,” he said.

He added that the new ambulance points are part of a larger plan to build more centres in hospitals, busy roads, and local government areas, with trauma centres already functioning in Epe and Tollgate.

“We’re building systems, from ambulances and personnel bases to communication upgrades and trauma centres,” Ogboye said.

He also thanked the LASAMBUS team for their continued dedication, saying, “We know the work will increase, but your efforts are saving lives every day.”

Contractor Mr. Sulaiman Hammed said the new pre-fabricated structures are strong, mobile, and can last over 50 years.

According to him, the ambulance stations are fitted with high-quality steel, anti-burglar panels, hybrid plasma cooling systems, and modern hangars that can hold up ambulances safely.

“These structures are cost-effective and can be relocated if needed. We’re proud to contribute to a healthier Lagos,” he said.

Deputy Director of Nursing and a representative of LASAMBUS, Mrs. Rasheedat Saka called the new ambulance points a “game-changer.”

She praised the government for listening to the needs of ambulance workers and for providing continuous training.

“With these new points, we are now more ready and comfortable to respond to emergencies, ww rain or shine,” she said.

She reminded Lagosians that in emergencies, they should call the toll-free numbers 767 or 112 for help.

One of the highlights of the event was a touching testimony by Mr. Akintayo, who shared how LASAMBUS saved his life earlier this year.

“They came quickly, treated me on the spot, and took me to the hospital, all for free. I’m alive today because of LASAMBUS,” he said. As a show of appreciation, he painted the perimeter wall around the new Agege ambulance point.

The unveiling brings the total number of new pre-fabricated LASAMBUS Points in Lagos to 16, following the commissioning of six others last year.

The state government says it is working towards setting up at least one ambulance point in every local government area.

The government had earlier, in December 2022, renovated an abandoned ambulance point on Bajulaiye Road in Shomolu after over five years of neglect.

They have been going round for surveillance and will be involved in this election. Also, our waterways have been properly policed. We have put measures in place for adequate security and to ensure things go well.

“There has not been any flash of incidents of violence anywhere throughout the state…We will not tolerate overzealousness and over-dramatization from any group. Nobody will be allowed to take us into his hands.”

The CP said the restriction of vehicular movement was in the utmost public interest, adding that it would ensure that nobody conveys prohibited firearms, objects or things that could cause harm anywhere in the state.

Addressing the operatives, CP Jimoh charged them on professionalism, warning that they should not allow miscreants and hoodlums to hijack the exercise.

“We should be very professional, polite and firm. We should be strict in carrying out our responsibility. This is to ensure that there is safety everywhere across Lagos state.

“As residents go out to vote, they should go without fear or apprehension. They should not be afraid that they will be attacked or that anybody will snatch ballot boxes or cause disturbance of public peace. Is that clear?” He stressed, assuring them that their welfare would be adequately sorted out.

“You shouldn’t be afraid that your welfare will not be taken care of. No, your welfare will be taken care of properly and directly. So you go out there and make us proud,” he added.

The police boss reminded them of their roles as provided by the guidelines on election security, reiterating the need to adhere to best practices.

“This is not the first time we are coming for election duty and this will not be the last time. This will not be an exception in giving the maximum and ultimate performance in ensuring that the election is secured, safe.

“So, I welcome you to the Lagos State Police Command. There are a lot of expectations on us as the lead agency for internal security. We have put a lot of resources into this planning for the security of the election.

“In terms of material resources, in terms of time for lectures and meetings and in terms of deployments. The Inspector General of Police equally provided us with all the equipment that we needed to ensure adequate security for this election. He gave us additional four armored personnel carriers to ensure we protect ourselves while deterring criminals so that we don’t suffer bodily harm.

“He has equally provided us with water cannons so that if there is any disturbance anywhere we can promptly put it under control….

“I want you to shun any act of indiscipline, shun any act of corruption. Don’t allow anybody to embarrass you with issues of corruption. I know very well we are professional officers, we are not corrupt and we make sure that we do as is expected of us to make the Nigeria Police Force and the IGP very proud,” he concluded.

Akiolu to politicians: play by the rules

The Oba of Lagos,  Oba Rilwan Akiolu has appealed to political parties contesting in today’s Lagos State council election to ‘play the game of politics according to the rules’ by ensuring the election is peaceful and devoid of any forms of violence.

Akiolu spoke on Thursday at his Idunganran palace, Lagos Island when he hosted representatives of the C & S Unification of Nigeria, who paid him a visit to intimate him of the forthcoming centenary celebration of the church in Nigeria.

Speaking on the council election, Akiolu urged electorates, candidates and parties to be calm and vote for candidates of their choice irrespective of party affiliations.

“My special appeal to all residents in Lagos irrespective of party alleviation is to be calm and play the game according to the rules.  Politicians do not quarrel, they only disagree. If one party has something profitable for the people, they should meet with other parties and iron it out,” Akiolu said.

“For a very long time, we have been enjoying peaceful coexistence in Lagos State. We noticed from the first civilian government of Lateef Jakande to Bola Tinubu as governor, even during the military leaders in Lagos, they all did well and Lagos has been progressing.

At this particular time, we have the President, the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the governor of CBN. I appeal to the traders not to look for excessive profits. They should not put high prices on their goods.  The naira is stabilizing and I have the belief that God will help the country,” he added.

The leader of the delegation that visited him, Archbishop Apanisile Olufemi who is also the Coordinator of Holy Mount Sinai Conference Worldwide said the church founded in 1925 in Lagos Island clocked 100 years this year and they find it necessary to carry Oba Akiolu along in their preparation.

He said the church is praying for the election to be peaceful, and urged the people ‘to obey the rule of law and do everything with contentment.’

“She is the Princess and Mayoress of our time. She deserves all the recognition,” Sanwo-Olu said. “This is my third visit to Ikosi-Isheri—some council chairmen have not invited me even once. That shows there’s something worth celebrating here.”

Sanwo-Olu commended Bada for attracting high-level attention to the area, noting that her achievements had drawn the First Lady’s office to Lagos in a clear show of support.

He emphasized that development was taking place not only at the federal and state levels but also at the local government level—evident in impactful projects like the new health centre.

The governor used the opportunity to rally support for Bada and other All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates ahead of the July 12 local government elections, saying: “It’s no coincidence that this Saturday, Princess Samiat and 56 others are being presented for the mandate they seek. Let us support them.”
