Sanwo-Olu signs LG administration law as tension rises over implementation in Lagos APC primaries

In a major development that could reshape the political landscape of local governance in Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has signed into law the Local Government Administration Law 2025—a bold legislative framework that now governs the tenure, succession, and disqualification of Chairmen and Vice Chairmen across the 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs of the state.

Signed in 2025, the new law provides a clear legal structure for leadership succession in cases of death, resignation, or political defection, and firmly stipulates that a Vice Chairman who assumes the office of Chairman due to any such circumstance shall be considered to have served a full term, regardless of the duration.

However, political watchers have begun raising questions about the consistency of application in the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly in two LCDAs—Agbado-Oke Odo and Ikosi-Isheri.

In Agbado-Oke Odo LCDA, the new law has been duly implemented, as a former vice chairman who had previously stepped in to complete his chairman’s tenure was disqualified from contesting again, in accordance with Section 28(4) of the law, which considers such succession a full term in office.

The situation in Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, however, presents a stark contrast, where the current APC candidate and flag bearer in Ikosi-Isheri LCDA first served as vice chairman, then took over as chairman following the death of the sitting chairman, and afterwards completed a full four-year tenure as elected chairman. Despite having effectively served in the role across two tenures, she has been cleared to contest once again, even officially unveiled as the APC flag bearer at the party’s campaign flag-off held yesterday at the Lagos APC State Secretariat.

This development has raised serious legal and moral concerns, particularly among observers who question the inconsistent application of a now-binding state law. If the law was used to disqualify a candidate in Agbado-Oke Odo, why was the same not done in Ikosi-Isheri?

Igbokuta community to Sanwo-Olu: stop planned installation of monarch

Some elders of Igbokuta community, a suburb of Ikorodu, Lagos State have cried out to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to stop the planned installation of a certain Olayiwola Jimoh Nosiru as the monarch of the community.

They are also singling out the Ranodu of Imota, Oba Ajibade Agoro, as the monarch behind the ploy.

Also, they are appealing for speedy delivery of justice, as the case has dragged for too long – almost 20 years.

Speaking to The Nation, two elders of the community, Ahmat Abiodun Akinrele and Ayodele Benson Ige, alleged that Nosiru, was arraigned before Justice Onigbanjo at the Lagos State High Court over the murder of a young man, Afis Ayeni, on July 3, 2008, following a disagreement in the community.

Said Ige: “The interesting thing is that the case dragged endlessly before Justice Onigbanjo. They could adjourn for up to seven months, to the extent that the case sometimes came up only twice a year. This went on until Justice Onigbanjo retired.

“Later the case was revisited and reassigned to Justice O.H. Oshodi with current suit number: 1D/178C/2019 State vs Nosiru Jimoh Olayiwola. However, despite evidence from doctors, ballisticians and witnesses, the case has dragged on for almost 20 years.”

But, in a phone interview with The Nation, Ranodu of Imota, Oba Agoro, however, dismissed the agitation, asking: “How many times have they gone to court and lost? Tell them to produce the suit number. They have gone to court and he has defeated them four times, yet they are not relenting.”

But Akinrele countered him, saying: “That is not true. The case came up as recently as the 13th of May 2025, and was adjourned to 13th of October, 2025. The governor and the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs should prevail on him to desist from trying to impose such a person as king over us.”

When contacted through his verified phone number, Nosiru pretended not to be the owner of the phone after this reporter identified himself. His words: “I’ll deliver your message when he comes back.” He subsequently put the phone in busy mode and refused to pick.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has emphasized the crucial role of parents in the development of a responsible and morally grounded younger generation, describing parental values as fundamental to the nation-building process.

The governor made this known on Monday during the Eid el-Kabir celebration hosted by the First Family of Lagos State at the State House, Marina.

In his message, Sanwo-Olu urged parents to take active roles in shaping their children’s futures by instilling values that promote discipline, truth, and devotion to God.

“Our children are the leaders of tomorrow. As parents, it is our sacred responsibility to guide them in the path of truth, discipline, and obedience to Almighty Allah,” he said, adding that this form of upbringing is vital to fostering peaceful and progressive communities.

  • Lagos fully aligned with Tinubu, says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos fully aligned with Tinubu, says Sanwo-Olu

Those insinuating that a gulf had been created between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu got it all wrong, the governor said yesterday.

He said there was no rift between him and the president and dismissed such rumours as not only unfounded, but mischievous.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the President at his Ikoyi Lagos residence, Sanwo-Olu said there is no discord whatsoever, reaffirming his loyalty and that of Lagos State to Tinubu’s leadership.

With the governor at the meeting were members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC). They were on routine festive visit to the President, who is in Lagos for the Eid-el-Adha celebration.

“There’s none”, the governor said in response to a reporter’s question about reported tension between him and the President.

He went on: “Even you are smiling and I’m smiling. There are people that believe they are more Catholic than the Pope. There are things that you see – people crying more than the bereaved. He’s my father, he’s my leader, and we’re grateful that he gave us audience today.”

Sanwo-Olu said the group took the opportunity to show support for the President and expressed their satisfaction with his leadership over the past two years.

“It’s our usual festive period courtesy visit. It’s a time for Mr. President to meet with his brothers and leaders of our party. The GAC looks forward to it every time he is around, and this was no exception”, the governor explained.

Sanwo-Olu praised President Tinubu’s administration for delivering tangible improvements, particularly in the areas of the economy and public infrastructure.

Highlighting recent developments in Lagos, he pointed to the unveiling of newly-acquired Blue Line trains, a project he credited the President for supporting.

“Coincidentally, earlier today, I unveiled our new Blue Line trains at the National Arts Theatre. We received 12 brand new coaches – four sets of three-car trains.

“At that unveiling, we acknowledged and thanked Mr. President because he made it happen. About a year and a half ago, he supported us under his intervention for subsidy removal, understanding that Lagos would need additional means of transportation.”

The governor added that the economic reforms implemented under Tinubu’s leadership are beginning to yield visible results.

“We can feel it. We can see it. For the first time, you see petroleum pump prices coming down. You see food prices coming down. These are things that put money in citizens’ pockets. If you’ve done well, let’s say it”, he said.

On the recent call for protests by some groups ahead of June 12, Sanwo-Olu questioned the motives behind the planned demonstrations.

He urged Nigerians to allow the President more time, stressing that the economic trajectory had taken a positive turn.

Sanwo-Olu said: “I also want to use this opportunity to admonish… we’re hearing people saying they want to protest on June 12. What will be the basis? We’re engaging them, we’re talking to them. In two years, give this President more time. The economy has made a positive bend, and we just need to stay the course.”

During the meeting, President Tinubu reportedly charged party leaders to focus on grassroots mobilisation ahead of next month’s local government election in Lagos.

Describing the gathering as one marked by unity and enthusiasm, Sanwo-Olu said: “He (President) was very happy to see us – extremely happy. He was excited that we are one big, happy family and not divided in any form. We all honestly pledged our full loyalty to him and his government. It was unanimous.”

“We’re not just excited because he’s our father and leader…we’re excited because we can feel the impact of his leadership. Lagosians are happy, and we are firmly behind him,” the governor said.
