Ogunsan lauded his dedication to infrastructural renewal, sustainable transportation, urban regeneration, youth empowerment, and robust security architecture that have transformed Lagos into a thriving, global megacity.

Today, we celebrate not just the man, but the legacy he is building. As a member of Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Ogunsan noted that Sanwo-Olu’s strategic investments in security have greatly enhanced safety and investor confidence.

His words: “Governor Sanwo-Olu’s support for LSSTF has been instrumental in improving security infrastructure, empowering our security agencies, and making Lagos a safer place for residents, businesses, and visitors. President Federation Cup: Sanwo-Olu, Abdulrazaq set to grace grand finale

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State is expected to be the special guest of honour at Saturday’s President Federation Cup grand finale at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos in which Cup holders Rivers Angels will confront Nasarawa Amazons in the women’s final, before ‘giant-killers’ Abakaliki FC tango with Kwara United in the men’s final.

A colourful occasion is afoot by the Lagos Waterfront with Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq also confirmed to be in attendance, while the number one citizens of Nasarawa, Ebonyi and Rivers State may also be in attendance or send high-powered delegations.

It is the first time that a team from Ebonyi State, which was created in October 1996, will reach the final of Nigeria’s national Cup competition, while it is the first time in 49 years that a team from Kwara State, which was created in 1967, will show up at the final of the competition.

In 1976, little-known Alyufsalam Rocks of Ilorin decimated more illustrious clubs across the country to reach the final of what was then known as the Challenge Cup, losing 2-0 to Rangers International of Enugu. Today’s Ebonyi State was created from parts of Enugu and Abia States.

This year, Abakaliki FC have turned out to be the surprise packets. The club has continued to show disdain for big names, and have, like Kwara State’s Alyufsalam Rocks 49 years ago, sailed into the final at the expense of fabulous names in the football establishment.

NPFL clubs Katsina United (who fell 2-3 after penalty kicks in the Round of 32), two-time African champions Enyimba FC (grilled 2-0 in the Round of 16), Nasarawa United (bumped in the quarter finals following 4-5 penalty-kicks defeat and Ikorodu City (whose sweet song was truncated after another 4-5 penalty-kicks defeat in the semi-finals) were the victims, after Yobe Desert Stars were cut out in the Round of 64.

The club is financed by Senator Joseph Obinna Ogba, a former Chairman of Ebonyi State Football Association, one-time vice president of the Nigeria Football Federation and a two-term Senator of the Federal Republic.

Although Kwara United had a foretaste of Ebonyi opposition earlier in the competition, when they dismissed Cynosure FC in the Round of 64, they will do well not to take anything for granted against Abakaliki FC when the whistle goes for kick-off inside the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

Nicknamed Afonja Warriors, the progress of Kwara United, coached by Tunde Sanni to this year’s final has attracted the keen interest of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq; the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari and indeed persons in high and low places in the entire Kwara State.

“I was once an official of Shooting Stars (another top-tier club based in Ibadan) and the Nigeria Football Federation. I know what is at stake in a crucial match like this. Prepare well, remain focused and stay united. We will continue to pray for your success,” were the words of the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari to the team before the contingent departed for Lagos.

  • Sanwo-Olu at 60

    Sanwo-Olu at 60

Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu is 60 today. Deputy Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU examines the feats of the dynamic and workaholic administrator, which have made him a reference point in good governance.

At 60, Babajide Olusola Aduragbemi Sanwo-Olu, surveyor, banker and governor of Lagos, is forging ahead with purpose, courage and confidence.

In the last six years, he has been the captain steering the ship of the largest state, former federal capital and economic nerve centre. The destination is a safe harbour.

The testimonies of stakeholders underscore their perception of an effective captain, who is living to expectation through sheer fidelity to Lagosians who conferred on him the mandate to govern with the fear of God.

To ordinary Lagosians, who savour the expanded dividends of democracy across the sectors, Sanwo-Olu is, on steady course in implementing his THEMES Agenda, which is anchored on the Development Blue Print initiated by his leader, President Bola Tinubu, when he was governor of Lagos State.

The foundation laid by the Jagaban Borgu has made it easier for his three successors, who built on it under hid guidancd, to excel.

Hailing the governor, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, said Sanwo-Olu’s  Diamond Jubilee is a celebration of the grace of God who has bestowed on him the manifold opportnities to serve and make a mark on the lives of Lagosians.

In a, congratulatory statement, the apex leadership structure added that in the last six years, he has earned public confidence because his policies and programmes are dictated by their needs, aspirations, expectations and yearnings for improved welfare.

The advisory body stressed: “Saneo-Olu is presiding over a government of inclusion. You are accessible. You are listening governor, and your open door policy has contributed to the flow of feedback on government activities, thereby expanding the level of public input into governance and enhancing accountability and good governance.

“Your people-oriented policies and programmes, particularly your commitment to the huge infrastrutural battles in consonance with your THEMES agenda, are marks of success that underscore your fidelity to your campaign promises.

“We have confidence in your ability to sustain the tempo of achievements to the end and errect lasting legacies that would sustain the status of Lagos State as a reference point in the country.

“May God contnue to strengthen you as you renew your resolve to serve our beloved state with vigour, patriotism and sense of responsibility.”

Also hailing the governor, Ikorodu apex APC leaders, led by Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, former party chairman and deputy governor, thanked God for his, life of service, diligent contributions and commitment to the welfare of Lagosians.

In a, statement, the group said: “Your Excellency, you have lived to expectation by building on the sound foundations laid by your predecessors in accordance with the Lagos State Blueprint on development initiated by our leader, President Bola Tinubu GCFR, when he was governor of the state.

“The implementation of your THEMES agenda, which derived from the blueprint, has led to the expansion of dividends of democracy across the sectors. You have not rested on your oars in breaking new grounds of infrastructure development across the three senatorial districts.”

It added: “You have presided over a government of continuity that has protected the interests of Lagos State and earned the trust and confidence of the people as a true progressive, a democrat and statesman.

“We note that through your humility, candour and open mindedness, you have fostered inclusion, and under your leadership, there is peace in the party, cohesion in the government and harmony in the state.

“As a tested and trusted leader, and true servant of our dear state, your impact will always be remembered and your legacy will definitely outlive your tenure.

“Our prayer is that God should continue to order your steps and give you more wisdom as you rededicate yourself to the service of Lagos State.”

According to the Lagos State Caucus of the House of Representatives, what Sanwo-Olu is celebrating is the reality of a worthwhile existence as an accomplished technocrat, an achievement-oriented administrator and a statesman with a promise of a greater future.

The caucus added: “It is gratifying to note that as a politician and progressive leader, you have exhibited patriotism, courage, dedication to public welfare and commitment to the sustenance and defense of the vast interests of Lagos State.

“Your utmost fidelity to the implementation of your THEMES agenda has been bearing fruits in various sectors, including education, health, social infrastructure and security.

“Lagos State has benefitted from the avowed implementation of laudable people-oriented policies and programmes dictated by the aspirations of our people for development and progress in the last six years.

“We note with fondness that you have fostered inclusion and expanded the horizon of democratic participation in a way that has forged effective synergy between the ruling party and your government.

“Also, you have also succeeded in presiding over an atmosphere of peace and tranquility peace in our beloved state through your display of humility, simplicity, forthrightness and belief in team work.

“Much still needs to be accomplished in the remaining two years by your progressive administration, which has through its giant strides, remained a reference point in the country.

“We are confident that you will build on your achievements, break new grounds and make more impacts.”

In a congratulatory message, the Lagos State APC, led by Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, noted that Sanwo-Olu you has justified the confidence reposed in him by the chapter and the generality of Lagosians, adding that his programmes have met the aspirations of the people for greater dividends of democracy.

It added: “We are particularly delighted that you are breaking new grounds of infrastructure development in consonance with your campaign promises to the electorate.

“You have presided over a progressive and inclusive government that has protected the interests of Lagos State and earned the trust of the people across the sectors.

“Your Excellency, you have are steering the ship of state with your humility, candour and open mindedness, which have endeared you to the stakeholders.

“We are confident that you will erect lasting legacies worthy of pride by this generation and those yet unborn.”

Sanwo-Olu never dreamt of becoming governor. According to an account, his highest political aspiration was to serve as Chief of Staff to an aspirant, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, who later became his deputy.

His ascension to power was an act of God and a fulfilment of destiny. While those who brought him to government around 2003 floundered at a time before retracing their steps, the ‘young’ technocrat exhibited loyalty.

Reminiscent of his student days and life as a banker, he embraced the duties assigned to him with passion, demonstrated humility, intelligence and candour. As an aide to former Deputy Governor Olufemi Pedro and Asiwaju Tinubu, he shunned idleness.

In the Tinubu government, Sanwo-Olu’s talents unfolded, making him a vital asset. He was tested and trusted by his leader; a round peg in a round hole. In the positions he held before becoming the governor, he performed creditably.

As Special Adviser on Corporate Governance, Acting Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pensions, and LSDPC boss, he made his marks.

Sanwo-Olu had also earned a reputation for hardwork, diligence, focus and achieving results as, governor.

From day one, he had hit the ground running, conscious of the fact that the progressive beat must go on in the Centre of Excellence.

He increased the tempo of infrastructure battle, knowing that as population grew in geometric proportions, there would be pressure on the pre-existing social amenities.

Then, the strange pestilence, Covid-19 pandemic, sneaked into Lagos to distract his government. Sanwo-Olu became the Incident Commander. But, conscious of the nature of the vast city state and people’s yearning, he has maintained a sensitive balance.

While tackling the public health challenge, concerted efforts are also made to full the campaign promises he made during the electioneering.

The EndSars protest was, also a challenge. Although it was a mass response to the police behaviour by youths, the government bore the brunt. Up to now, some activists still insist that there wasa massacre at Lekki Toll Gate. But there, was no evidence. It was an inaginary attack without wound, a massacre without blood.

Refuse dumping, traffic management chaos and public work challenge have been tackled based on the acknowledgment that the state has groaned under the yoke of filth, chaotic traffic situation and infrastructural deficit.

Also, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) was directed to operate a minimum of two shifts until 11.pm daily.

The Office of Drainage Services in the Ministry of Environment embarked on an aggressive cleaning of secondary and tertiary drainage system to ensure the free flow of rainwater during the raining season.

The integrated mass transportation blueprint of the Lagos Government has been a, success story. Also, the bandoned Blue and Red Line Rail projects, and the commercial waterways transportation have seen the light of the day.

Today, Lagos State pays N85, 000 minimum wage. Gratuities and pensions are paid promptly. Housing schemes ars delivered.

Sanwo-Olu has defended the education sector with improved funding. For the first time in 38 years, Lagos State University (LASU) became a residential tertiary institution.

The Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCED), Ijanikin, and Lagos, State University, Ikoridu, have  been upgraded to  fully-fledged universities.

Many road projects in urban and rural areas have been inaugurated. Lagosians now expect him to commission the Opebi-Odo Iya Alaro link bridge this year.

Much is still expected from Sanwo-Olu in the next two years so that a “greater Lagos” can really rise through the continuous implementation of “six pillars of development agenda,” which represent the governmen’s response to public yearnings.

The pillars that encapsulates his vision, include traffic management and transportation, health and environment, education and technology, making Lagos as a 21st century economy, entertainment and tourism, and security.

But there are also dark moments. Life is not a bed of roses. Political life could be full of ups and downs. The field of politics and the corridor of power could be slippery. Occasional clouds can blur an otherwise illustrious career. Sometines, governance is, stressful, although stress itself  is concomitant with human existence. In the highest offices in the land, occupants can suffer a sort of executive stress arising from demands, pressures, commissions and omissions, unconscious misteps, gaps in role fulfilment, disparity between expectation and reality, and perception of inexplicable dilution of loyalty which could lead to adversity of power. There could be turbulence. The lesson should not be lost on all office holders. It should be learned by the wise. Not all in similar circumstances would survive the tumoil. But, unlike his predecessor, the BOS of Lagos survived the multiple tests of power, and if the acquired experience is properly deployed, he will wax stronger.

The governor was born in June 25, 1965 in Lagos. He is a graduate of the cosmopolitan University of Lagos, Akoka, where he studied Surveying. He also attended the London Business School, the Lagos Business School and the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Sanwo-Olu earned an MBA degree from UNILAG. He is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) and Fellow of the Nigeria Institute of Training and Development (NITAD).

Sanwo-Olu is not a politician without a second address. He was the Treasurer at former Lead Merchant Bank from 1994 to 1997. He also worked with the United Bank for Africa (UBA) as the Head of Foreign Money Market. At the First Inland Bank, Plc (now First City Monument Bank), he was a Deputy General Manager and Divisional Head.

In private business, he was also a success. Sanwo-Olu was the Chairman of Baywatch Group Limited and First Class Group Limited. He was a board member of the Department for International Development (DFID/DEEPEN) Fund and Audit Committee of Caverton Offshore Services Group, PLC.

Since 2003, he had placed his hand on the plough and never looked back. Although he joined the Tinubu administration as a technocrat, when was appointed a Special Adviser on Corporate Matters to Pedro, he later learned the ropes. He served as Acting Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, and later, Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in 2007.

In 2007, he was appointed as Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions by former Governor Babatunde Fashola SAN). In 2016, Ambode appointed him as Managing Director/CEO of LSDPC. His achievements include the supervision of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) Privatization Projects.

He also played a great role in the setting up of the Lagos Security Trust Fund. He served as its pioneer board chairman. The LAGBUS System and the Control and Command Centre in Alausa were also part of his initiatives.

Sanwo-Olu is a recipients of many awards and honours. They include the Platinum Award from the Lagos State Public Service Club, 2009 Best in Human Capital Development award from the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Merit award from the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, Merit award from the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management in Nigeria (CIPMN), Merit Award from the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), and LSDPC Impactful Leadership and Recognition Award.

Sanwo-Olu is married with children to Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu.

  • Celebrating six decades of Governor Sanwo-Olu

Celebrating six decades of Governor Sanwo-Olu

    By Hon. Olumuyiwa Jimoh

Leaders demonstrate a high sense of connectedness with society as they have a great and deep understanding of the relevance of power and that it becomes useless if it is not deployed in serving the people.

Service to the people, they believe, can only be seen and expressed in the degree to which the proclivities of power manifestations become instrumental to positively impacting the lives of the citizenry. In essence, Governance can only be relevant to the extent to which it has touched the lives of the people and the community.

It is in these dimensions that we have come to analyse His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was born next to my father’s house at 63 Omidun Bestridden the seat of Government in Lagos State as Governor of the State.

Governance benefits the people that it governs. He has remained a symbol of pride to those who stuck their necks out in support of his leadership in the State from conception, and as he marks his Diamond of existence on Mother Earth, his grade A performance has not waned, rather, it is gaining increasing momentum.

The struggle and the political ferment that led to his emergence as the Governor of our great State are still very fresh in the minds of political insiders. Despite all the fears and trepidation in the hearts of those who have demonstrated completely for everyone to see that he has pledged his life and honour to the service of the people of Lagos state.

It is a belief that is borne out of the understanding that when every Nigerian plays his own role effectively, a critical mass of greatness will be built that would generate the needed momentum for national renaissance. His leadership motive, therefore, is not limited to the corners of Lagos state but has an innate pursuit of contributing to a Nigeria that is able to deliver justice and welfare to her people and a greater world that would provide equal access to global resources to all peoples of the world.

I have watched with admiration and awe the continued transformation of Lagos State under the dexterous hands of our governmental processes are becoming compliant with global standards, while various institutions of Governance are being strengthened. He is, in fact, creating a State that would outlive and contend with its

Contemporaries, as he leaves his imprints in everything that he has touched thus far. His marks are indelible, succeeded in turning governance into a symbol of hope and not of despair that many other leaders have come to foist on the citizens of other climes since the inception of this democratic experiment. No facet of the state’s economy has escaped his transformative touch.

He has always demonstrated his acute realisation that Governance is teamwork. The enthronement of a smooth interface between the Executive, which he leads, and the State Legislature, where some of us belong, is a conscious effort to create a functional, effective, but constructive democratic governance that would produce the best result possible for the benefit of the majority of the people of the State.

Unlike some governors who interfere in the affairs of their state legislatures, Governor Sanwo-Olu has taken a different path. He respects the independence of the legislature, allowing it the freedom to operate creatively and effectively. This hands-off approach has resulted in the development of robust laws and statutes that both empower the citizens and strengthen the machinery of governance in Lagos State.

A great party man who has championed the cause of the party that bred him and gave his political ambitions vent to express itself, as the Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and as  the celebrant, he has implemented most of the policies of the APC, adhering strictly to the dictates of its leadership and never seeking to overthrow its leadership or

Pocket its leaders. He has encouraged free choices and abhorred all decisions which has helped to make the party more cohesive and vibrant in the State than ever. However, I need to say that he was also blessed with a good wife who gave all necessary support to him when it was needed, as the saying goes, the hand that rules the empire rules the nation. If it’s not arrogant to say that the contribution of Ibironke Sanwo-Olu gave adequate support to the Governor

As he marks the sixth on the surface of the earth, I want to join millions of his admirers all over the world, especially in our great State to say that this diamond age should continue as a golden opportunity to continue delivering.

West Africa’s largest safety footwear factory for commissioning

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu will lead other dignitaries for the commissioning of the ultra-modern, expanded manufacturing facility of Yikodeen in Lagos.

The commissioning ceremony, taking place today, marked a pivotal moment for Yikodeen and Nigeria’s broader industrial ambitions.

With the completion of the expansion, Yikodeen now operates the largest safety footwear manufacturing plant in West Africa, a 120,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility capable of producing 5,000 pairs of safety boots per day. This represents a 250 per cent increase from the company’s humble beginnings in 2016, when daily output stood at just 20 pairs.

Other dignitaries expected at the commissioning ceremony include His Royal Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ooni of Ife, His Royal Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III, Olu of Warri and Executive Secretary, Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe. Chairman, Yikodeen, Engr. Ajibola Akindele, the chief host, will welcome guests alongside Yikodeen’s leadership team.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Yikodeen, Atunde Shamsideen Olayinka, said the commissioning is more than a ribbon-cutting event but a declaration of intent; a symbol of what is possible when visionary thinking, local talent, and long-term investment converge in the service of national development.

He said: “We are not just opening a factory; we are unlocking new possibilities for industrial self-reliance in Nigeria and across Africa.”

According to him, the new facility is equipped with some of the most advanced manufacturing and quality control technologies available globally, including automated European production lines, precision-based quality assurance systems, and fully integrated production processes that support a diverse product range: industrial safety boots, educational footwear, and the fast-growing Yiko Plus athletic shoe line.

He explained that the scale and efficiency of the new factory reflect a deliberate strategy to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported safety footwear while promoting local job creation.

According to him, since the start of the expansion phase, Yikodeen has added over 180 skilled roles and anticipates hiring at least 20 more as operations scale to full capacity.

He pointed out that the factory’s increased output is projected to inject over N5 billion annually into the Nigerian economy through direct employment, local procurement, and regional supply chain engagement.

He noted that the expansion was made possible through a strategic investment from Aruwa Capital Management, one of Nigeria’s leading women-founded and women-focused private equity funds.

While the financial terms were not publicly disclosed, the investment is widely believed to be in the multi-million-dollar range and was deployed to accelerate Yikodeen’s digital transformation, factory upgrade, and market expansion initiatives. The company’s leadership has also emphasized the social impact of its journey. As part of the commissioning event, Yikodeen will present a short documentary video showcasing the company’s transformation from a microenterprise in 2016 to a continental manufacturing leader in 2025. A separate segment will highlight the company’s social investments, including training programs for youth, mentorship opportunities for aspiring manufacturers, and ongoing support for SMEs navigating capital access.

Yikodeen’s operations have been consistently aligned with Nigeria’s Local Content Development policy, and it remains the only safety footwear manufacturer certified by the NCDMB for supplying safety boots to the Nigerian oil and gas industry. This exclusive positioning has allowed the company to win major contracts, deepen its compliance infrastructure, and elevate local content as a standard of competitiveness.

There will also be a interview session and live brand storytelling led by the company’s executive team to provide a deeper understanding of Yikodeen’s vision, milestones, and market strategy.

Sanwo-Olu is expected to speak on the significance of industrial development in Lagos State and the importance of supporting homegrown enterprises that are committed to manufacturing excellence. His participation reflects the Lagos State government’s ongoing interest in catalyzing local production and job creation as key drivers of economic transformation.

Yikodeen’s recommissioning is not just a moment for celebration; it is an invitation to stakeholders, partners, and policymakers to reimagine Nigeria’s future as a destination for industrial excellence. The company has already signaled its intention to explore export opportunities to neighboring West and Central African countries with its new infrastructure designed to meet the compliance and volume requirements of both domestic and international markets.

The recommissioning of Yikodeen Factory 2.0, under the theme “The Walk That Matters” will serve as a reminder that Nigeria can produce, innovate, and lead, not just in theory but in practice. For the Yikodeen team, it is not merely the opening of a facility; it is the launch of a renewed national promise, one stitched, laced, and walked in every pair of boots they make.

NMA urges Sanwo-Olu to approve retirement age review for doctors to curb exodus

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State chapter, has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to urgently approve the implementation of an upward review of the retirement age for healthcare workers from 60 to 65 years, citing the growing exodus of medical professionals.

In a letter signed by the NMA Lagos Chairman, Dr. Saheed Babajide Kehinde, and Deputy Secretary, Dr. Olusola Temiloluwa Soyinka, the association warned that failure to implement the policy could further deplete the state’s already strained healthcare workforce.

The appeal comes on the heels of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval for the extension of retirement age across the health sector—a directive the NMA says Lagos must domesticate promptly, especially as Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre and a critical hub for healthcare services.

Lagos currently has around 8,000 doctors catering to an estimated population of 30 million, a figure the association described as “grossly inadequate,” especially as brain drain continues to worsen the doctor-to-patient ratio.

“The healthcare system is facing an emergency,” Dr. Kehinde said in an interview. “Infrastructure can be expanded, but without retaining personnel, it will amount to nothing. We are losing our most experienced hands daily, and this policy will help slow the bleeding.”

He lamented that under the current policy, seasoned doctors are forced into retirement at a time when their skills and mentorship are most needed, often returning under contract terms that lack dignity and hinder productivity.

“The same state government that extended retirement ages for teachers, lecturers, and judicial officers should do the same for health workers,” he added.

Kehinde also faulted the strategy of increasing medical school admissions as a standalone solution to the workforce shortage, arguing that unless underlying issues such as poor welfare, limited facilities, and burnout are addressed, newly trained doctors will continue to leave the country in search of better opportunities.

He concluded by urging the Lagos State Government to show political will in implementing the retirement age extension, which he described as a necessary step toward stabilising the healthcare sector and safeguarding the lives of millions of Lagosians.

“The health sector should not be left behind. Lagos is the centre of excellence. If the healthcare system collapses here, it is a reflection of the entire country,” he warned.

The NMA stressed that retaining experienced hands would not only address staffing gaps but also promote mentorship, uphold professional dignity, and reduce the burden of recruiting and training new personnel under duress.

Kehinde also decried the growing crisis facing young medical graduates in securing hospital placements for their mandatory one-year internship, describing the situation as “a ticking time bomb.”

He, noted that despite increasing enrollment in medical schools across the country, there has been no corresponding expansion in the number of accredited hospitals to absorb graduates for internship, a key requirement for their professional licensing.

“Doctors have graduated for over a year, some close to two years, and are still roaming around looking for where to do their internship. It’s becoming a serious problem,” he lamented.

According to him, while Lagos State has made efforts to increase the number of accredited centers—adding a few general hospitals to the previously limited list that included Gbagada General Hospital, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), and the Federal Medical Centre (FMC)—the slots available are grossly inadequate compared to the volume of graduates being churned out.

“Many of these centres only take 20 or 30 interns at a time. Yet, every medical school, both public and private, is expanding its student intake. When they graduate, where do they go?” he queried.

Kehinde criticised government planning, saying it is “uncoordinated and unsustainable” to expand training institutions without a structured internship pipeline in place.

“You can’t train a student for six years and then abandon them to scramble for internship slots like they’re begging for jobs,” he said.

He noted that the Doctors are stranded and frustrated. The system is not thinking ahead.”

He warned that unless urgent steps are taken to accredit more hospitals and create structured internship placement systems, Nigeria may witness a further breakdown in healthcare service continuity and even higher rates of brain drain.

“We are producing doctors we cannot absorb. What message are we sending to these young professionals? That they are not needed?” he asked.

The NMA appeals to federal and state governments, as well as the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), to urgently prioritise internship infrastructure and make it a central part of healthcare and education policy.

“If we don’t fix this bottleneck now, we will be losing even more doctors to Japa before they ever get a chance to serve the country,” Kehinde warned.

They urged the Lagos State Government to act swiftly in implementing the policy in line with the Federal Government’s THEME-PLUS agenda and national healthcare reform efforts.

“Let those who have chosen to serve their country be allowed to serve with dignity and retire with honour,” the letter read.
