LP chairman joins APC as Sanwo-Olu solicits votes for party

The Labour Party (LP) Chairman in Apapa Local Government of Lagos State, Prince Femi Badia, yesterday led some members of the party across Lagos Central to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Badia declared for the ruling party at the Lagos Central Senatorial District APC Mega Rally,  held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena (Formerly Onikan Stadium), Lagos.

He said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu s performance and the need to support him  and President Bola Tinubu in 2027 to record more successes  motivated their decision.

Badia added he and supporters defected to join forces APC to ensure the ruling party wins Saturday’s council polls in the senatorial district.

Badia said: “We are also here to work with APC to deliver the forthcoming council polls to all its local government chairmen and councillors. We are grateful for the privilege to be on this stage and talk to the people. I can assure you that come Saturday, we will deliver our polling units. We are starting ‘Operation Go to Your Polling Units and Deliver for APC’ from now. I can also assure you that in the 2027 general elections, our President will emerge victorious” he said.

Badia, who thanked party leaders for accepting the group, said that the defectors were from four local governments in the district.

Lagos State APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, who received the  defectors, commended the Chairman of Local Government Campaign Council, Alhaji Babatunde Balogun, for facilitating the defection of the LP members.

Ojelabi, who presented the party flags to the defectors, commended them for joining the progressives, saying their decision would be rewarded.

Urging the defectors to work hard within the party, Ojelabi, however, said that the rewards would be based on hardwork and the value added by the former LP members.

“Thank you for seeing the reality of the progressives. I welcome you on board and I am going to assure you that you will be properly integrating into the party. I promise you that our candidates will not disappoint you. They are going there to complement Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu. The opposition is in disarray,” Ojelabi said.

Governor Sanwo-Olu represented by Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, told the party faithful to arm themselves with their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) against Saturday.

Urging party leaders and members to mobilise voters at the Lagos Central Senatorial District, Sanwo-Olu tasked stakeholders to make the President proud with total victory.

“We must not put our President to shame on Saturday. Tinubu is promised made and promise kept. We have done a lot for the state.

So, we have a party all of us can be proud of and sell to the electorate,” he said.

Deputy Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mrs Mojisola Meranda, urged the electorate to cast their vote for the candidates of the APC.

Activist appeals to Tinubu, Lagos governor over illegal eviction from residence

A Lagos State business man and activist, Vincent Uba has appealed to President Bola Tinubu and the Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu over move by some individuals to forcefully evict him from his residence.

Uba, speaking to journalists in Lagos, said he had been subjected to series of intimidations by the so called agents in the apartment which he is currently occupying in Ilupeju, Lagos.

Uba said he had been subjected to harassment and intimidations from both the security agents and those who claim to be acting on the new owners of the said apartment.

Amid growing fears for his safety, Uba, who was the national coordinator of No Alternative to Tinubu 2023, a support group for Tinubu’s during the 2023 presidential election appealed to President Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state and all well-meaning Nigerians to urgently intervene in what he described as a campaign of intimidation and dehumanisation allegedly orchestrated by the new owners of the property.

The Lagos businessman who had been living in the said apartment for the past 10 years said he was shock d when he received a quit notice to vacate the house within seven days.

According to him, ever since he and other tenants got the quit notice on May 13, 2025, he has not had any rest, and his business had been adversely affected.

Uba disclosed that the quit notice was irregular and poorly drafted, referring to all occupants as “tenants at will”.

“I was shocked upon reading the notice and asked why we were given only seven days instead of the legally acceptable six months.

“After the seven days elapsed, I received a Whatsapp message from the office of the AIG, zonal oracle unit zone 2 police command Onikan, Lagos.

It was an invitation for what was described as a ‘mere fact-finding exercise’. But when I got there, I was confronted with two petitions falsely accusing me of collecting rents illegally and being a nuisance,” he said.

Despite denying the allegations and providing evidence of consistent rent payments from 2015 to May 2025, Uba said he was briefly detained, and later released and asked to return to the station on June 3. At that follow-up visit, he claimed he and other tenants were given a 14-day ultimatum to vacate the premises or face the “full force of the police.

“We were coerced into signing an undertaking agreeing to vacate. Others signed out of fear, but I refused. My release was delayed because of this, and I was only let go after insisting I would rather be locked up than sign under duress,” Uba said.

According to Uba, the next phase of harassment began almost immediately as building materials were brought into the compound, obstructing access to his apartment.

Even more troubling, Uba said, was an incident on June 24, when police officers raided the compound and arrested occupants.

“Those arrested were later arraigned converting the next day in handcuffs, based on frivolous allegations of converting the building into chalets and bringing underage girls, a narrative he said was orchestrated to secure a questionable demolition permit.

“These people were paraded in handcuffs and taken to Ikoyi Prison. As I speak, two of them are still there. Innocent people. Victims of a failed system,” he lamented.

“I campaigned vigorously for this government in 2023. I would have died for it. I have prayed for its success. But now I am pleading with President Tinubu and Governor Sanwo-Olu to step in and com to our aide.”

Sanwo-Olu renews call for LCDA’s recognition as local governments

The Lagos state governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has renewed his call for a constitutional recognition of the 37 local council development authorities as local government authorities.

Sanwo-Olu made the presentation in Lagos at the ongoing zonal public hearing on constitutional review, an exercise that goes on simultaneously in Enugu, Kano, Jos, Lagos, Ikot-Ekpene, and Maiduguri.

According to the governor, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said that by all standards, the creation of LCDAs in Lagos and other southwest states should be given the needed recognition as local governments.

Sanwo-Olu noted that the calls for amendments and reviews to the constitution have remained persistent and vigorous.

He said in response to the demands of Nigerians, the National Assembly has enacted five sets of amendments to the constitution, known as the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Alteration Acts.

These amendments, he added, tackle various issues related to good governance, institutional strengthening, and national aspirations.

Regrettably, Sanwo-Olu said several fundamental issues of national importance remain unresolved, requiring more than just routine lawmaking by the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly.

He said that the LCDAs created by Lagos under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as then governor, were overdue for full-fledged local governments.

Sanwo-Olu added that Lagos, by population and revenue, merited more than 20 local governments listed.

“A population of a local government in Lagos is almost at par with some states in the federation, yet we have just 20 local governments.

“We followed all the processes in creating the 37 LCDAs, and they have been very helpful to our people, the state and the country.

“These LCDAs have been given birth and have tremendously helped in governance; we cannot afford to make them die.

“All we’re asking from the National Assembly is to list all the LCDAs.

“Jigawa State, with 27 local governments, was created from Kano State, which has 44 local governments.

“Our councils are viable and control a huge population, and we would be glad to see the National Assembly grant our proposal.”

Sanwo-Olu, who noted that though some states in the zone had backed down, Lagos will continue to pursue its demand to recognise the local council development authorities.

Residents, drivers, commuters excited as Sanwo-Olu opens roads

The Lagos State Government yesterday, inaugurated the rebuilt  Abaranje Road in  Ikotun-Igando Local Council Development Area and Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Old Dopemu) Road in Agege Local Government Area.

The 3.86km Abaranje Road in Alimosho Local Government is a major arterial that provides access from the densely populated Abaranje community to Igando on LASU-Iba Road in Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the reconstruction of the Abaranje Road  demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the administration to continually energise the local economy by providing essential infrastructure that promotes development across the nooks and crannies of the State.

He said the Lagos State Government is determined to bring relief to residents and make commuting pleasurable for the people.

Sanwo-Olu noted that aside from the roads commissioned today, Alimosho has a fair share of road projects completed by the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led Administration. The roads include Akesan Obadore Road, Ishefun Camp-Davies Road with a Jetty, Lagos-Ogun State Boundary Road (Phase 2), Agric Access Road (Bamidele Kasali/Disu Ekunrin Road) and Isuti Road.

Disclosing that the administration has also embarked on the reconstruction and rehabilitation of about 28 others, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the projects include Akesan Igando Road; Ijegun-Ijagemo Road; Ile-Eja, Ola-Iya/Ajibola Hassan, Alhaji Mustapha-Olu Adeyanju with Bridge, Rabiatu Ogedengbe Road Network; Oke-Anu /Ezenwaobi Streets; Famakin Road; Rilwan Onifade/Osidele Streets in Ikotun; Rabiatu Ogedengbe; Alhaji Waidi Ewenla, and many others.

“Many other roads are also undergoing routine maintenance and palliative works simultaneously within Alimosho,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu hailed the Lagos State Public Works Corporation for the strategic intervention and reconstruction of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road in Dopemu, saying it shows that the administration’s heavy investment and efforts to reposition the Corporation as a world-class construction outfit are indeed yielding results.

He said: “The delivery of these road projects and 35 others earlier, even as we enter into the penultimate lap of the administration’s tenure, is an indication that ours is not just about promises and hopes but of plans, delivery, and a commitment to serve the citizenry better.”

In his welcome address, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Engineer Olufemi Daramola, recalled that before the award, Abaranje Road was in a deplorable state. It was narrow, flood-prone, and riddled with failed sections that caused daily hardship for road users and residents. The absence of proper drainage, combined with the growing population and increased vehicular movement, was a challenge for commuters.

Praising the Lagos State Government, a resident, Funmilayo Daniel, said: “This road is a good one. The government did not just give us a road; they gave us a solid road. Unlike before when people were afraid to visit us, the new improvement on our road makes it easier and safer for our people”.

Also speaking on the condition of the road, Idowu Olaiya, a landlord in the area, said it was difficult to go out before the construction.

“The journey from here to Ikotun is just about three minutes if the road is okay. Before now, it took us almost 30 minutes, which was very unfortunate. I didn’t go out with my car. What type of life is that? After struggling to get money for my life, everything looked miserable”, he lamented.

In the same vein, Joseph Njoku, a businessman in the area, said, “The road was so bad that even before you get to your house, you don’t spend less than N2,000 from this Ikotun to your own house in Ikotun here. At times, the road is so bad that you cannot cross to the other side.

Maruwa will not cross. The motor will not cross. The bike will not cross. Everybody has to stop over. If we reach, we’ll stop. We’ll use the leg and cross, and enter another bus going to the street”. He gave accolades to the Lagos State Government for easing the burden caused by the bad roads before the rehabilitation.

Many residents acknowledged that the journey along the route has become faster with easier movement along the 3.86-kilometre route.

An excited resident said: “The road is now in good motorable condition, it has become the darling of commercial drivers and riders”, just as he expressed gratitude to the Governor for coming to the aid of the people.

Sanwo-Olu to inaugurate two roads today

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu will tomorrow inaugurate two major roads aimed at enhancing connectivity, easing traffic congestion, and boosting economic activities across the state.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, who broke the news in a statement yesterday, listed the roads as Abaranje Road in Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road (formerly Old Dopemu Road) in Agege Local Government Area.

Omotoso said the projects reflect the government’s commitment to providing infrastructure that supports inclusive economic growth and improves the quality of life of residents.

“In the past few months, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has handed over 36 roads and five bridges to Lagosians,” he said.

According to him, the completion of the roads aligns with the state’s strategies to build sustainable communities and reduce gridlocks.

He explained that Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road was reconstructed by the state Public Works Corporation to serve as a bypass cutting across the administrative boundaries of Agege and Alimosho local governments. The road links Akowonjo Road, Old Ipaja Road, and Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

Omotoso noted that the delivery of the projects has significantly improved road connectivity, and eased traffic flow. reduced travel time, and eliminated perennial flooding in the areas.

“Similarly, the Abaranje Road in Igando-Ikotun LCDA was rebuilt to enhance accessibility in one of the largest settlements within the Alimosho axis. Also, we have enhanced intermodal transportation and positively impacted the socio-economic well-being of residents.”

The commissioner reaffirmed that the government remains resolute in its commitment to upgrade existing roads and construct new ones in fulfilment of governor’s promises to the people of Lagos State.

    • Falana: new law a game-changer

Lagos State House of Assembly has expressed concerns over Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s proposal to delay the implementation of the recently amended Local Government Administration Law.

The law was set to take effect immediately but is now proposed to start next month.

Rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN), has, however, lauded the new Law, describing it as a game-changer that could redefine democratic governance at the grassroots.

The Assembly has summoned key officials, including the Solicitor-General, Attorney-General, Commissioner for Local Government, and Director of Litigation, to explain the rationale behind the proposed postponement.

Lawmakers have condemned the executive’s attempt to delay the law’s enforcement, asserting that no executive order can override an existing statutory law.

Sani Okanlawon (Kosode 1) asserted that no executive order could override an existing statutory law, while Dipo Ajomale (Oshodi 2) questioned the timing and necessity of the proposed delay, noting that the governor had already signed the law on May 7, 2025.

Sa’ad Olumoh also stressed the supremacy of legislative enactments over executive directives.

Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, emphasised the supremacy of legislative enactments over executive directives, noting that such executive-legislative frictions could test the resilience and clarity of enacted laws.

The Assembly has summoned officials from the Oto-Awori Local Council Development Area (LCDA) over a leadership crisis, following the death of the council’s chairman.

The council’s Vice Chairman, Kareem Abiodun, has declined to step in as acting chairman, citing his interest in contesting the upcoming election.

Obasa has declared that Abiodun must either resign to pursue his political ambition or fulfill his duty by stepping into the leadership role, warning him to exercise caution in handling council resources.

The Assembly’s actions aim to ensure transparency and accountability in the implementation of the Local Government Administration Law and resolve the leadership crisis in Oto Awori Council.

Falana said the new law not only aligns with the 1999 Constitution but also offers a robust framework for tenure regulation, succession, and legal continuity—critical issues that have plagued local government administration across the country.

According to him, the legislation sets a new constitutional benchmark that other states should study and adopt in order to sanitize local governance.

One of the key highlights of the 2025 Law is its firm position on tenure limits for local government chairmen. Section 27(5) states that any person elected to complete the unexpired term of a previous office holder through a by-election shall be deemed to have served a full term.

Falana noted that this provision addresses a long-standing loophole in the repealed Cap L82 Law of 2015, which failed to clarify whether such completion of term counted toward the two-term limit.

    …drums support for candidates

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged Lagosians to vote for the chairmanship and councillorship candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during the July 12 elections.

He said if elected, the local government chairmen will not disappoint them.

The governor, who was represented by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, made the call at the mega rally held in Ijanikin, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

He urged the party faithful to embark on a house-to-house campaign and generate enthusiasm about the approaching dawn of more effective council administration.

Sanwo-Olu fired salvos at the rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying that the umbrella is either torn or burnt in Lagos state.

He said, “There is no umbrella in Lagos State. It has either torn or burnt? Don’t let us disgrace our leaders. There is no other party in Lagos state that is doing what we are doing in Lagos state. It is only Lagos.

“There are a lot of ongoing projects in Lagos State. As members, we must be proud of our party. We must be proud of ourselves. We are progressives. We are doing well. May God make it easy for us.

“It is important for us as a political party to come out and vote. We are happy you are all carrying placards, but it is more important for you to go out with your PVCs and vote for candidates of the party. Ensure you support the candidates of the party and defeat opposition candidates.”

The party chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, urged Lagosians to reward the good governance and developmental projects of the APC-led government at the centre and Lagos State by voting for the party.

He said: “We are here to present our candidates for the local council polls to the public. Let me ask you this question: What do you have to give the president and the state government, who created an additional six LCDAs, infrastructure development and various opportunities for the districts?

“They are not asking for anything other than your votes. We need your votes to get our candidates into power. This is the time we must unite. Your party, the APC, has chosen wisely; it is for you to canvass and mobilise the people to come out in large numbers and vote for the candidates of the party. Let us tell the world that Badagry West 2 is for the APC.

“To the youth of this corridor, this is the time for you to show your appreciation for all the good things President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu have done for us in the Lagos West senatorial district. We must show our appreciation by mobilising support for the party.

“I appeal to the CDC, our youths and market men and women, I appeal to you to support the party’s candidate by voting for them come July 12.”

The Chairman of the Campaign Council, Babatunde Balogun, urged the candidates and the aggrieved aspirants to unite in the interest of the party.

He also enjoined members and supporters at the APC mega rally to mobilise the grassroots and ensure that the candidates record success at the polls.

Balogun added: “The candidates on parade today are the flag-bearers of our party in the July 12 council polls. As our candidates, you must be capable enough to unite and mobilise the electorate for the task ahead.

“Many of you jostled for this position, now that you have been given the party ticket, I am appealing to you to unite the aggrieved and form a formidable force ahead of the council elections.”

A member of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, described the proposed polls as a litmus test for the 2027 presidential election.

He said: “Let us bear in mind that the State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC, has announced that seven million voters are in Lagos. There is nothing stopping us from pulling 6 millions vote out of the total number. This is an opportunity for us to cast our votes and send a signal to the entire country that, come 2027, APC shall win the presidency for President Bola Tinubu. This coming election is very important, and I trust in your capacity to deliver.

“We don’t have any enemies anymore. Everybody is your friend. We have to live for today and tomorrow.”

Former Deputy Governor Sarah Sosan acknowledged that women have the population, urging them to come out en masse and vote for the ruling party.

She said, “I am happy for today. We will all live to reap the reward for our labour. We own the Nation and the home. We own everything; therefore, let us come all out to vote in Lagos West 2. Let us make our father, the President, happy by encouraging all women and others to come out and vote.

“I congratulate our candidates, and I also appeal to you all to work in harmony with all other aspirants for the work to translate into success.”

At the rally were other GAC members, party executives, members of the House of Representatives, representatives of ethnic groups, the traders’ association, members and chairmanship and councillorship candidates of the APC in the council polls.

    Lagos adopts gender-inclusive procurement

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has signed a Gender Policy Framework for Inclusive Procurement to institutionalise gender-responsive procurement practice.

The policy, announced during a top dialogue on Gender-Responsive Procurement in Lagos, is part of the state’s efforts to level the playing field for women entrepreneurs and integrate them into public procurement systems.

Speaking at the event, organised in partnership with UN Women, Commissioner for Finance and Chairman of Lagos State Public Procurement Agency, Abayomi Oluyomi, said the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to promoting women’s economic rights and enhancing financial inclusion.

Oluyomi, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mamud Tajudeen, highlighted the broader economic benefits of empowering women entrepreneurs, noting that thriving women-owned enterprises contribute meaningfully to tax revenue and growth.

“As more women-owned businesses access procurement opportunities, their participation will impact development, while reinforcing government’s vision for an inclusive society,” he said.

According to the Director General of the agency, Mrs. Fatie Onafowokan, the agency has established a dedicated Gender Desk offering direct support to women entrepreneurs, guiding them through procurement procedures and helping to remove barriers that hinder their access to public contracts.

“The Gender Desk is designed to provide hands-on support and demystify the procurement process for women-led businesses,” Onafowokan said.

She added that the Agency, in collaboration with UN Women, has empowered 50 women-led home businesses under the “Women’s Ideology Programme”, an initiative aimed at nurturing female entrepreneurship and expanding their participation in the formal economy.

The newly signed framework is expected to create a more equitable procurement environment and serve as a model for other states seeking to implement inclusive economic policies.
