  • In Sanwo-Olu’s Lagos, workers are reaping rewards here on earth

In Sanwo-Olu’s Lagos, workers are reaping rewards here on earth

    By Ibrahim Adesokan

The conversation on the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers has become a topical national issue since Wednesday, May 1, 2024. The commemoration of this year’s International Workers’ Day again brought to the frontburner the lingering wage issue and attendant problems. The various labour unions, particularly, the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC and their affiliates have been hellbent at forcing the federal government to open negotiation on the 615,000 minimum wage proposal they put forward for the government, despite the announcement of certain increments in salaries for public servants.

In the midst of the confusion, the government of Mr, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State towered high in terms of workers’ welfare and providing an enabling environment for state workers to thrive. At the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Arena, Onikan, the venue of the May Day commemoration ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated his readiness to implement and pay the new minimum wage that will be decided by the Federal Government.

Governor Sanwo-Olu who was applauded by the union leaders in the state for his pro-workers policies and various interventions he had put in place to cushion the impact of the economic hardship on the workers, said: “This year’s theme, ‘People First,’ resonates deeply with our administration’s philosophy, which is underpinned by our firm belief in prioritising the welfare of our people.

“Through various measures, policies, and initiatives, we have demonstrated that the interest and welfare of the people come first and remain the ultimate goal of all our actions. Our response actions are geared towards mitigating the impact of these trying times and offering support to both our workers and citizens alike.

“We have been steadfast and intentional in implementing our social intervention programmes, providing crucial assistance to those in need throughout the state. From subsidised food items through our Ounje Eko, and Eko Cares initiatives to incentives on social services, we have made tangible differences in countless lives.

“Healthcare initiatives that ensure access to quality medical services for all, transportation support, and educational opportunities for our children exemplify our commitment to creating a Lagos where everyone has a fair chance to thrive. Our dedication to putting people first extends beyond mere words.”

Speaking further on his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, Governor Sanwo-Olu added that : “As we look towards the future, I want to reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable society in which the interests of workers receive the attention it deserves.

“We will continue to invest in education, training, and skills development to equip our workforce with the tools they need to succeed in their places of work because we recognize the vital role that workers play in driving progress and prosperity in our society. And we pledge to build a future where every worker is respected, empowered and able to live with dignity and pride.”

The Chairperson of NLC, Lagos State Council, Comrade Agnes Funmi Sessi and her TUC counterpart, Comrade Gbenga Ekundayo, praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for making workers’ welfare a priority of his administration, attesting that under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State Government has implemented a plethora of social intervention programmes that are targeted at enhancing the well-being of the populace.

In her words, Sessi said: “Let me use this unique occasion of May Day to commend and appreciate our Mr. Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for all his interventions to cushion the effect of the economic problems and ameliorate the suffering of the workers in the State.

“We all witnessed his policy on the last reduction in BRT transportation, the setting up of a discounted food mart, the three-day working policy, the payment of a 20 percent increment in salary, the full implementation of N35,000 Wage Award as approved by the Federal Government, and prompt payment of salary.”

Ekundayo commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his prompt action in implementing the Wage Award for all public servants in Lagos State, noting that the swift response has provided much-needed relief to mitigate the adverse combined effects of the recent subsidy removal and devaluation of the Naira.

“Lagos has been at the forefront of implementing welfare programmes that positively impact workers, and your (Governor Sanwo-Olu) dedication to this course is deeply appreciated. Your commitment to prioritising the welfare of your people is perfectly aligned with our core belief of placing citizens first,” he said.

Lagos has set the pace  and standard in industrial harmony. Governor Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated repeatedly that he is indeed committed to the welfare of the Lagos workforce. The pronouncements at the May Day event at Onikan were not just political statements, they are facts and solid promises premised on the track record of honesty and transparency which are the anchors of the relationship of the Governor Sanwo-Olu and the respective labour union affiliates in Lagos State.

In assessing the general welfare of the workers, it cannot be done in isolation. The infrastructure and massive social support programmes provided by the state government also contribute to ameliorating the plights of the workers. The subsidy on public transportation, including public buses, rail and ferries go a long way in reducing the burden of cost of mobility to work and other destinations. The transportation cost that should have utterly depleted the take-home of workers have been cushioned through the intervention.

Ditto for cost of healthcare, public hospitals in Lagos State which are adjudged efficient by many Lagosians also provides succor to the vulnerable members, including workers, through Governor Sanwo-Olu’s intervention to reduce the cost of medicare and certain categories of drugs in response to the record economic hardship that many Lagosians are facing.

In the education sector as well, many workers whose children are in Lagos State-owned public tertiary institutions are also benefiting from special bursary and scholarship schemes of the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu administration.

So, the accolades and commendations showered on Governor Sanwo-Olu by the workers are true reflections of his contributions to the general well-being of Lagosians, workers inclusive.

Oba Adebambo was reported to have engaged in brawl with some masqueraders during an annual festival that featured a masquerade called Jigbo in Ibeju, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, Lagos.

The clash resulted in pandemonium as policemen invited from the Elemoro Area Command and Akodo Division stormed the community, firing teargas and gunshots to contain the situation.

Yoruba Week: Sanwo-Olu’s administration writes Lagos Assembly

    …sets date for celebration

The executive branch of the Lagos State government has officially communicated to the state House of Assembly regarding the establishment of the last week of September as an annual celebration of Yoruba culture.

The decision followed a resolution adopted by the Lagos Assembly during a session held on September 19, 2023.

This was contained in a statement issued by Eromosele Ebhomele, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The letter, dated April 8, 2024, and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, informed the lawmakers of the government’s intention to initiate preparations in advance of the forthcoming celebration.

“Sequel to the resolution of the House at its plenary of Tuesday, 19th September 2023, on the activation of Yoruba cultural heritage and a special day to be assigned as Yoruba day, I have the directive to officially convey Mr. Governor’s approval for the last week of September as Yoruba Week,” a part of the letter, which was read by the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, stated.

Commending Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his cabinet for the decision, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa described it as a good development.

He described the Yoruba culture and heritage as very important just as he stressed the need for its preservation.

The speaker said the House is ready to support the executive to ensure the success of the planned Yoruba Week.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday held a minute’s silence in honour of the late former Governor of old Anambra state, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, who was buried recently while the House was in recess.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa described the late politician as a pan-Nigerian who supported the Yorubas and the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), especially during the dark days of military reign and following the struggle for Chief MKO Abiola.

“We remember how he proudly stepped down for Olu Falae back then in 1999,” Dr. Obasa said.

  • Okun Ajah residents task Sanwo-Olu, Tinubu on deviation of coastal road alignment, demolition

Okun Ajah residents task Sanwo-Olu, Tinubu on deviation of coastal road alignment, demolition

Concerned about the reported deviation from the planned route of the proposed coastal road in the Okun Ajah area of Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area (LCDA), residents of the community have gathered at the Lagos State House of Assembly to seek assistance in reviewing the situation and protecting their properties from potential demolition.

The protesting residents suspect that there may be clandestine efforts underway to alter the original plan for the road development.

They held up placards with bold inscriptions to convey their message effectively.

“Okun Ajah field staff are not following the original right of way. Okun Ajah coastal road, we need a stakeholder meeting. Okun Ajah coastal road FMk, MMPP and UD follow due process,” the placards read.

Speaking with newsmen during the protest, Musiliu Ologunro who led the group of affected residents cited the fact that the deviation was actually spotted from the Owonikoko area of Okun Ajah a development he claims negates the initial template envisioned by the Governor of Lagos now President of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He said: “We have a survey plan of our area as well as the documents which were duly issued by the government to us, they were coming from Ahmadu Bello up straight to Lafiaji to Alpha Beach till when to Okun Ajah. The deviation started from Owonikoko, we are saying no to the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

“We learnt they have been compromised by some individuals, all we want is that they should follow the blueprint of Asiwaju, not to divert the coastal road.”

Another stakeholder, Saheed Olukosi was quick to add that they are against the twist of the initial plan by the physical planning ministry, in his view he claimed the roads were diverted to areas where they already have C of O from the governor indicating consent, as well as the survey plan.

“We are pleading with Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu, President Tinubu and the Assembly to help us do something about it and those who collected money should return it, they don’t have consent.

Helen Aigbe, a resident of the area also added that coastal road alignment handlers should not deviate but follow the available plan as duly gazzeted.

Mrs.Omotope Isiaq said: The marks are there. Now they have deviated without reason adduced for it, as well there was no engagement with us”

On residents already erected structures, they had confirmed from the State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development whether they were on coastal roads and that they were told that the layout was not on coastal roads.

According to a petition by the protesters titled “Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Lagos State Surveyor-General and Federal Ministry of Works Deviating From Gazetted Road Alignment” submitted to the House of Assembly, the protesters said that their houses had been marked as being obstructive to right-of-way, insisting that it was not.

The petition further stated: “We are aware of the Federal Government of Nigeria’s decision to construct a Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road and a series of Alignment Verification have commenced.”

“Okun Ajah community specifically has preserved the portion of alignment gazetted in the survey attached to the Certificate of Occupancy prepared and signed by the Lagos State Surveyor-General, while the alignment has been marked by Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development since 2006/2013, respectfully.

“However, the official of the Lagos State Government stormed the community and started marking houses that were not on the alignment, in this regard the original alignment is what has been maintained right from the starting point which is Ahmadu Bello Way to Coplage Estate which is what is expected to be maintained all through the exercise.

“We hereby appeal to the Lagos State Government, the Lagos State Governor and the Lagos State House of Assembly that those that deliberately built on the right of way cannot eat their cake and have it,” the petition concluded.

Hon. Desmond Elliot, who received the protesters on behalf of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa assured the protesters that their petition would be communicated to the leadership of the House for further deliberations.

Hon. Rasheed Shabi who also addressed the protesters, urged them to submit a clean copy of the petition, assuring that the House would get back to them in due course.
