Imam tussle: Stakeholders seek Sanwo-Olu’s intervention

Stakeholders and concerned Muslims have called on the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene in the Imam tussle in the Ikeja Central Mosque. They said the governor’s intervention was imperative to avert violence in the state capital following the alleged secret turbanning of an illegal person as Imam.

Speaking at a briefing on Tuesday, the stakeholders and the Olowolagba Family of Ikeja, Lagos State protested the way and manner in which the alleged turbaning of one Kamorudeen of Ilo Family secretly took place last Friday.

They expressed their displeasure over what they termed unlawful procedure in the appointment of an Imam.

They explained that the position of the Imam of Ikeja had for long been rotated between the Balogun and Olowolagba families such that the immediate past Imam, the late Alhaji Tijjani Balogun was from the Balogun Family.

According to the family, going by the age-long established procedure, the next person to be legally appointed as Tijani’s successor is Alhaji Afeez Ayinde Olowolagba who had worked for over 30 years in Ikeja and even served as the Deputy to the late Imam for over 16 years.

Alhaji Olowolagba said: “I led all the prayers in the Mosque, including the Friday Jumuat, exclusively for three years while the late Alhaji Tijjani was down with old age weakness before his death.

“It is therefore, a shocking, embarrassing and abuse of procedure, justice and norm in Islamic practice for the Ilo Family to bypass all established procedures and hurriedly turbaned another person.”

A member of the family, Alhaja Rukayat Amoke, added they would not watch and injustice, and cheating to prevail.

She called on the state government to intervene and ensure the right person,

“We are appealing to the Lagos State Government to intervene to avoid bloodshed,” she said.

Effective tax system, panacea to corruption, says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said that an effective tax system would curb corruption in the public sector

Sanwo-Olu, spoke on Thursday, April 25, in Lagos during a two-day House of Representatives Committee on Anti-Corruption colloquium.

The event, with the theme “Strong Will in Implementing Anti-Corruption Measures in the Public Sector, aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability and compliance in the public sector, brought together relevant agencies of government.

In his goodwill message, Sanwo-Olu said that there was a need for a reorientation and concerted effort against the menace which corruption has become “if we, as a people, truly desire to make meaningful progress in our journey towards achieving significant improvement in all spheres of our national endeavours, particularly the economic and social well-being of our people.”

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said the time had come for concerned agencies to evolve an effective tax system that would place every citizen on the same pedestal.

“I think the issue is that, with your taxes, it tells the system what you own, the income you made and the expenditure; that makes everything you have to be transparent to the authority and what is not in your books, is not yours.

“What other nations have done was to fight corruption through their taxation system and we should examine that.

“We must encourage everybody to file taxes. You can file taxes and the government pays you back if you don’t have a threshold.

“A good taxation system allows the government to know those that can assist.

“Where we don’t have such a system, it becomes a problem.  How do you make an objective assessment of the citizens you need to help?

“This will also subject everybody to the same standard.

“We need to put the right policies in place that will encourage everybody to comply with taxation.

“For example, if you get a flat in the UEA, you pay four percent of the sum to the government.  Do we do that here? So, we have to look at the whole system and see ways to contribute to our commonwealth and get taxes from our people.”

Earlier, the convener of the event and chairman of the Committee on Anti-Corruption, Prince Kayode Akiolu, argued that corruption was a huge burden that could hinder national development, stressing that history has shown that no country could develop without eliminating graft.

Akiolu said Nigeria has failed to reach its potential due to dishonest practices, stressing that the various agencies created to fight corruption should be rejigged and reactivated for optimal performance.

“There is no argument on what must be done for Nigeria to thrive.

“We need to bring corruption to its knees so that our country can rise to its full height to deliver on its incredible promise.

“We need to remove the shackles of corruption from the feet of our beloved country so that it will no longer have to limp slowly and painfully towards the Nigeria of our dreams.”

    • Governor praises Tinubu on economic measures

Before a crowd of excited community leaders, workers and ordinary Lagosians, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said yesterday that he had fulfilled his promise to stand by the vulnerable amid the global economic hardship.

“We have fulfilled the promises we made during the Media Chat in February – that we will not leave the vulnerable among us on their own – in health, transportation and education. We created 59 markets and turned them into Sunday markets. We promised that we will be selling food at 25% discount. That we have kept faith with. The medical outreach will start next week at the latest to give medical attention to a lot of our citizens who may not want to go to our hospitals. Medicines will be given and counsel will be given. You have continued to enjoy the 25% fares rebate on our ferry services. On our buses and on our trains,” the Governor said.

“Today we will be launching an attempt to reach 500,000 households.  All we have done is a tip of the iceberg. Now the real deal is about to start,” Mr Sanwo-Olu said at the public presentation of Eko Cares, the umbrella of all the social interventions announced by the government. The event was held on the grounds of the Governor’s Office in Alausa, Ikeja. The objective, according to him, is to see that food will no longer be a challenge to the poor.

He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic measures and urged citizens to play their own part.

Sanwo-Olu said: “You can see that the tides are turning. That is why we must commend the intervention of the President, who has been leading from the front.  He has been able to pass on grains to all the 36 states. We will be distributing ours to all of you. You can also see that Mr President has not sat back to fold his arms… to let us have a free flow of the issues that started this thing, which was the currency.

“Now we have seen that there has been a rebound. We can see that the currency is now getting strengthened. Naira is becoming a currency that we are truly proud of now because it is taking its proper pride of place. Now we should ensure that all gari sellers, all beans sellers are not increasing prices just because dollar went up. Prices don’t have anything to do with dollar. Even diesel is coming down. We have no excuse again. We need to be our brother’s keeper.”

According to Governor Sanwo-Olu, the food items would be distributed through religious leaders, Community Development Associations, Trade Unions and grassroots organisations. He warned that they should not be hoarded. Besides, the governor said the Sunday Market initiative would continue.

Members of the Special Dispensation Advisory Committee set up to advise the government on the initiatives were specially recognized by the Governor who asked them to stand up. They were praised for rendering their service pro bono.

Agriculture Commisssioner Bisola Olusanya took the Governor on an inspection of the food items, displaying the contents of the food boxes.

In his welcome address, Commissioner for Information Gbenga Omotoso commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for the initiatives, describing him “a leader who is bound by his words”.

He noted that ‘Eko Cares’ is for the vulnerables, adding that Sanwo-Olu’s administration has touched the lives of every Lagosian.

“ The launching of Eko Cares is a testimony that the administration will not leave poor to their own devices,”   Omotoso said.

“Meanwhile, the encroacher marked the fence covering the three buildings with “Stop Work” to give people impression that it was from the government, but the ministry denied knowledge of it. Perhaps, a report was made to Alabo Police Station. Aftermath, the encroacher continued to bring in hoodlums to harass occupants,” Lasisi, said.

He  appealed to Sanwo-Olu, the Police, the ministry, and others to intervene to forestall breakdown of law and order as the oppressor still sends hoodlums to harass residents of the houses in pursuant of his plan to rebuild the shops.
