Be good examples to younger generations, Anyaoku, Sanwo-Olu tell Nigerian leaders

A former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku; Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; and the Executive Secretary of Hallmark of Labour Foundation, Patricia Otuedon-Arawore, have implored Nigerian leaders to be good examples to the young generation.

They also advised the leaders to demonstrate good leadership traits worthy of emulation among the youths.

The trio spoke at the weekend during the Hallmarks of Labour Foundation’s 27th anniversary and Role Model awards which took place at Lagos Oriental Hotel on Victoria Island in Lagos.

Dignitaries at the event included Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by Information and Strategy Commissioner Gbenga Omotoso; the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Moji Adeyeye; The Nation Editorial Board Chairman Sam Omatseye; and the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede.

He said: “In the Nigerian society of today where ethical values have generally disappeared, the significance of recognising and honouring individuals whose character and achievements are worth emulating by our young people cannot be overstated.”

“In my young days, we were taught that success both in academics and every other undertaking came only from hard work; that integrity and character was the most important personal possession, as was succinctly expressed by the American evangelist, Billy Graham, who said when wealth is lost, nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is lost; but when character is lost, everything is lost.”

Sanwo-Olu noted that Nigeria has world-class citizens who the upcoming generations can emulate.

“From what has happened tonight, you can see that Nigeria is full of stars. Nigeria is full of world-class citizens, Nigeria is full of people that we can emulate. Nigeria is full of people that you can look at and say indeed the country has a push-up, the country is progressing,” he said.

Otuedon-Arawore urged Nigerians to join hands in building a nation of their dreams.

She described the awardees as great Nigerians who have demonstrated a reservoir of noble men and women, hard work, and integrity, as well as made a positive impact in society.

  • Lagos market fire: more buildings to go down, says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos market fire: more buildings to go down, says Sanwo-Olu

More buildings will be demolished to allow for proper cleanup of the Dosumu market, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said on Thursday, April 11.

He spoke when he visited the scene with some members of the State Executive Council.

The governor had earlier ordered a stop of commercial activities in all markets in Lagos Central.

Sanwo-Olu, who described the disaster as ‘preventable’, blamed it on carelessness.

He said: “This is very unfortunate. This fire started on Tuesday and first responders were activated. We thought it was something we could control in the first couple of hours but, unfortunately, our people have been very reckless, and they denied the first responders access. So even 48 hours after, is still an active disaster site.

“About 14 buildings have been affected but more might still go down after the extensive fit-for-purpose test that will be conducted soon.

“What I have seen here could have been prevented. We don’t have a full report yet, so I don’t want to speculate, but the initial report said the fire resulted from gross carelessness and people not understanding what it means to keep the environment safe, but we will conduct a proper extensive audit into what led to this.

“We also notice that a lot of residential apartments have been converted into warehouses with inflammable materials kept in them. This is totally unacceptable, we will not allow a few people, who will not comply with our laws, to put the lives of others in danger. I announced yesterday that the market all around will be closed until we are able to do full assessments and proper cleanup of this area. And without any doubt, some other buildings will go down.

“So, this is a call to others outside that the government will not shy away from its responsibility, we will come really hard on structures and property that will not conform to our rules and bring them down. And I will shut this place for as long as it takes, there will be zero tolerance all around here.”

Lagos State will demolish buildings that fail integrity test, Gov. Sanwo-Olu reassures

Lagos State Government on Thursday reiterated its resolve to demolish buildings that fail its integrity test.

Gov. Babjide Sanwo-Olu reassured of the step as 14 buildings in close proximity to the two that went up in flames at Dosunmu Market on the Lagos Island on Tuesday caved in to the fire.

“A lot of residential apartments have been turned to warehouses. I am saying without any iota of doubt that more buildings will go down.

“I just finished the assessment of a very unfortunate, but preventable disaster.

“Access was denied to the first responder to the fire for a couple of hours. This fire started more than 48 hours ago and is still alive.

“At the last count we have about 14 houses that have been affected and more may go down after the extensive test.

“What I have seen here is what could have been prevented; we do not have a full report yet, so I do not want it to speculate.

“From the initial report, it was gross carelessness,’’ he said at the site of the fire.

Sanwo-Olu added that the Dosunmu Market would be closed indefinitely, but that government would assist those to be affected.

“We will bring down any property that does not conform to our rules and regulations of construction.

“We cannot allow anyone to put the lives and property of others and the environment at risk.

“We will support those affected by the fire so they can get back on their feet, however.

“There are more progressive things we ought to be doing than to be spending scarce resources on avoidable accidents,’’ the governor lamented.
